everyone Can have a LegacyWe Can Find a Plan That’s Right for You

CORnERStOnE SOCIEtY The Cornerstone Society honors visionaries who have created a legacy by entrusting the Community Foundation with a planned gift that comes to fruition after their lifetime. At the time you or your professional advisor notifies us about your planned gift, your name will be added to the Cornerstone Society member roster. If you prefer to remain anonymous, we are happy to honor that request.

Many professional advisors (attorneys, financial planners, accountants, etc.) have found that working with the Community Foundation to help you carry out your charitable goals is a win-win for everyone. Here are some reasons professional advisors work with us:

1. The Community Foundation doesn’t represent a specific charity or cause. Its mission is to encourage charitable giving in support of the cause and nonprofits you care about.

2. Charitable giving laws change. The Community Foundation specializes in this area, and your professional advisor can consult with us at any time.

3. We have no start-up fees and low management costs, which are assessed after you have received your full charitable deduction.

4. The Community Foundation has a long history in Frederick County, and is carefully managed by professional staff and a board of trustees to ensure its longevity and stability.

5. Your gift is given the same due diligence as any other investment you make. It is placed into a fund and invested according to your instructions, with the fund’s proceeds used for grants and/or scholarships that match your charitable intentions.

WORkInG WItH YOUR PROFESSIOnAL AdvISOR

QUICk tIP:The Community Foundation does not give tax or legal advice, and you are urged to consult with your professional advisor(s) before making a charitable or planned gift. Many professional advisors work closely with the Community Foundation to design a planned gift that meets your needs and helps you achieve your charitable goals.

tHAnk YOU for considering a charitable gift that will positively impact Frederick County for generations to come. Whether your gift provides grants to local nonprofits or scholarships to students, it will make a difference in the lives of others.

Your gift becomes a lasting legacy, and by partnering with The Community Foundation of Frederick County, your charitable wishes are carried out exactly as intended. There are many ways to structure a charitable gift, and you can benefit as well. You may be surprised to learn that some of the best gift plans also improve the donor’s financial and tax situation.

YOUR GIvInG OPtIOnSThe most common donations are outright gifts, such as cash or a check, which are received right away. But many times, people want to hold on to their money and other assets for now, just to be sure they can meet their family’s future financial needs. Many are delighted to learn that the Community Foundation has excellent alternatives that allow them to still make a gift. One of these options could be right for you, too.

They’re known as “planned” gifts. They can be revocable—a charitable bequest in your will, for example—so that you can change your mind at any time. Or, they can be irrevocable— just as outright gifts are—so that you benefit from an immediate tax deduction.

The attraction of irrevocable planned gifts is that they are deferred. You part with an asset today, but the actual giving of the asset to us is put off for a while—often until after your lifetime (and that of a surviving beneficiary, if you wish). Until that time, you receive benefits from the gift.

LEARn MOREThe chart in this brochure summarizes the benefits of some of the main types of charitable gifts. Just decide what you want to accomplish with your gifts, and the chart will show you ways to do it.

We’re here to answer any questions you might have about planned giving. We can examine your particular situation and, together with your attorney and/or financial advisors, help you find ways to support the causes you care about while ensuring your family’s financial security. Please call us at 301.695.7660 for more information.
