3. Go to the RIMS website: https://up.rims.ac.za.
4. Type in your login details and click ‘Login’.
5. Select ‘My Human Subjects’ (even if your study has no human partici-
pants).
6. From the drop-down menu select ‘Create New’.
7. ‘New Human Protocol in Human Subjects Development’ is pre selected.
Click ‘Continue’.
8. Type the title of the study (in the box provided). Click ‘Continue’.
9. The student/ staff member is the Primary Investigator (PI) and their name
will automatically be selected under the PI information section. Click
‘Continue’
10. Scroll down the page. Select the application form for the ‘Faculty of Hu-
manities Ethics Application’ by clicking the Check Box then click ‘Add’.
11. Click on ‘Edit’ to open the application.
12. Complete the relevant selections of the form. Remember to save
as you go.
13. After completing the Primary Investigator section click on the Yellow ‘+’
sign (on the right) to add the supervisor’s details.
14. Once all the relevant fields in the form are completed, click
‘Complete’ (top right).
*Please note that the application is only completed, but not submitted at this stage.
15. Click ‘Submit’ .
16.Check the ‘Route’ to ensure that the supervisor has been included. Click
on ‘Save’ then ‘Submit’.
17. The application will now be sent to the supervisor.

Once your research proposal has been approved
by your supervisor and Departmental Research
Committee and you have all the required documents, you
are now ready to apply for ethical clearance.
