Healthy Californians “ANR has a robust research and education team that addresses many of the most urgent issues facing food safety.”
GIS Application GIS Pattern Areas Gather data on open spaces, parks, green spaces within communities.
Conduct a site-suitability analysis integrating climate, census, and other data to locate new community open spaces.
Integrate health data from disparate local, statewide and federal sources relating to community health (e.g. Diabetes, exposures to pollutants, etc.).
Create maps to show local planning boards the utility of open space, and allow for on-line engagement and participation.
Linking with forecasts that are useful in predicting human health outcomes.

Activity 2: Analysis
Creating a Workforce Development Plan with Esri
The Alignment phase provided us with the understanding of the GIS Applications to support organizational goals. The Roles Discovery, in the Alignment Phase, provided an understanding of the workforce that will be adopting the GIS applications for mission execution. Purpose: In this activity, we will practice assigning GIS Workflows to the workforce roles. Analyzing the workflows will establish how the activities will be distributed among the workforce AND the training needed to provide the technical competencies for the said GIS Workflows.

Creating a Workforce Development Plan with Esri
In Activity 2, we categorized the GIS Activities into GIS Workflows. Purpose: In this exercise, we will practice doing a training needs assessment, using a sample project with a project team of various Organizational Roles. Compare the project team member’s skill set to the project requirements to determine their training needs.

Who is UC ANR?
• 200 locally based Cooperative Extension advisors and specialists
• 57 local offices throughout California • 130 campus-based Cooperative Extension
specialists • 9 Research and Extension Centers • 6 statewide programs • 700 academic researchers in 40 departments
at 3 colleges and 1 professional school:

Esri UC 2014 | Technical Workshop |
Who is IGIS? • IGIS was established in 2012 to provide GIS
support, software, data and training to support the ANR network.
• Brings together: - People: extension advisors, specialists, staff and
faculty who need and use geospatial technology - Data: existing data, new data, dark data - Software: ESRI, Google, open source - Approaches: Questions across ANR Strategic Plan

Esri UC 2014 | Technical Workshop |
How did this planning effort get started?
• Met with ESRI in the Fall of 2013 • Discussed our needs for a method to connect the UCANR Network with GIS technology and training
• Began working on our GIS Staff Development Plan with ESRI
Creating a Workforce Development Plan with Esri
Esri UC 2014 | Technical Workshop |
How will UC ANR benefit from plan?
• Stimulate thinking about how people within UC ANR can use GIS
• Highlight training options that IGIS and ESRI think with benefit the different roles within UC ANR
• Provide an easy resource to look up the GIS training options available to UC ANR

• Worked with ESRI to populate the training matrices with options that would benefit the UC ANR Network
• These trainings were not solely ESRI trainings, but we incorporated trainings provide by UCANR and others into the matrices

Next steps for UC ANR and our Plan
• Distribute plan to personnel within UC ANR • Answer any questions or concerns with personnel
• Start providing training • Assess the results of the plan and revise based on lessons learned
Creating a Workforce Development Plan with Esri
Esri UC 2014 | Technical Workshop |
If the plan is adopted, we hope to…
• Institutionalize geospatial thinking and analysis into UC ANR
• Geospatial technology will be incorporated into our research and extension efforts
• Drive home that everything we do is spatial!
