Annual Report 2016 | 2017

f a m i l yTen Years of Giving and Counting Luis learned the importance of giving back when

others helped his mom build his Habitat OC home

For many years, Luis and his mom Carla shared a bedroom in a tiny apartment. The apartment was too small and Luis wished for his own room – someplace where he could read or study. Carla began saving to buy a home, but soon realized she wasn’t going to be able to afford a home in Orange County on her budget. After searching for help, she came across the Habitat for Humanity of Orange County program. She applied and was selected to purchase a two-bedroom home in Placentia. On December 16, 2006, Carla and Luis moved into their Habitat

OC home that was built with the help of donors and volunteers.

“It was a dream come true,” Luis said. He had his own bedroom, and it was even decorated with cowboys and horses. “That first night, I felt secure and peaceful, and at home.”

That got Luis thinking about other people. “I wanted other kids to have a house like mine,” he said. He decided to raise money for Habitat OC, so they could build more homes for kids like him.

A yard sale in his new yard seemed like a good idea. Luis donated many of his toys, and he made $57! Luis was so excited that he brought the money to the Habitat OC office the next day.

But Luis didn’t stop there. Every year since 2006, Luis and his mother stop by the Habitat OC office on December 16, the same day they moved into their Habitat OC home, to bring their yearly donation.

Luis is currently attending college and trying to decide between Communications and International Business as his major. He’s not quite sure where his future will lead him, but one thing is for sure - he will continue to raise money to help Habitat OC build more homes for children like him.

What We Accomplished in Fiscal Year 2016-2017Habitat OC proudly:• Completed one home in Fullerton and two homes in Santa Ana that were sold

to veteran families and a moderate income family.

• Expanded the Habitat OC Hand-Up Home Repair program and partnered with the cities of Anaheim and Newport Beach to further help veteran and civilian low-income homeowners with home repairs.

• Continued to revitalize the Woodcrest community in Fullerton by partnering and collaborating with residents, non-profits, stakeholders, and local businesses and focused on resident leadership as part of the Neighborhood Revitalization effort.

• Held our 6th annual Building Dreams Fundraising Breakfast where we raised $231,000 in pledges in one hour to support Habitat OC.

• Raised more than $160,000 at the 9th Annual Leaders Build Day, where more than 80 Orange County business leaders gathered to build five Habitat OC homes in Santa Ana.

• Led a Global Village trip to Vietnam where Orange County volunteers traveled internationally to help build affordable Habitat for Humanity homes.

donor spotlightBigRentz Partners through Philanthropy and VolunteerismCorporate philanthropy is about more than writing checks – it is about finding partners that share our vision for Orange County.

BigRentz, along with being a nationwide leader of online construction equipment rentals, has been a leader in corporate philanthropy because of their shared belief in a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Over the years, BigRentz has provided pro-bono services of equipment, engaged their employees in volunteer team build days, donated financial support through events, and served on volunteer committees.

Dallas Imbimbo, Founder and CEO of BigRentz, recently joined the Board of Directors at Habitat for Humanity of Orange County because of his personal drive to support affordable homeownership, and also because of his infectious ability to instill a culture of giving back within BigRentz.

“BigRentz is proud to support and participate with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County,” said Dallas. “Partnering with Habitat OC allows BigRentz to give back to the community and help well-deserving local families realize their dreams of owning a new home,” he added. “We truly believe in this great cause and are excited to be a part of it.”

state of the unionLetter from the PresidentI have been honored to serve as the President and CEO for Habitat for Humanity of Orange County for more than 10 years. In that time, I have seen the change affordable housing makes in the lives of our families. I have also seen the need for affordable housing grow. 1 in 4 Americans spends more than 50% of their pre-tax income on housing. That leaves little for basic necessities like food, transportation, and medical care. In one of the most expensive counties in the nation, Orange County, the need is even more prevalent.

So how do we respond to these statistics? Sometimes people hear such terrible statistics on television and say, “someone ought to do something about that,” and then they change the channel. That’s discontent. But, I think we need holy discontent. That’s when we see the same thing and say, “I can’t stand that and I’m going to do something about it,” and then you get off the couch and do it. Through the holy discontent of volunteers, supporters, and donors, low-income families in Orange County have found new hope in the form of affordable housing.

Imagine the possibilities for all those families in your community who are eager to build or improve a place they can call home. Now realize that, so often, all they really need is a helping hand, a way to help themselves so that they can build a better life for themselves and their families. I invite you to be a hero and offer a local, hardworking family the ability to attain the American dream of homeownership. It’s imperative that our work continue to grow, and that growth begins with your continued generous support. Help create a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Investing in Habitat OC Families

The Future Builders Legacy Society is a caring group of individuals who are assuring a successful future for Orange County’s hardworking families. These donors are creating their legacies. They are laying the foundation for bright futures with their generous spirits and concern for the community.

Polly Buckingham, recently joined Habitat OC as a Future Builders Society member. “This is the best contribution to the community that I can think of… [Habitat OC] is the most worthwhile expense right now, especially when you look at all the charities out there.”

According to Polly, the use of volunteers is the most responsible and important part of what Habitat OC is doing right now. Volunteers are the bridge to the community, and between the volunteers and building affordable homes, Polly is smitten with her future Legacy donation. “Habitat motivates people, it gives them the structure that [the families] need…everyone needs to feel like they have a place to call home,” said Polly.

By joining the ranks of Polly and others, you too can invest in what you love about Habitat OC and create a legacy for future limited-income families in need. To learn more, please call (714) 434-6200 ext. 222.

Honor Roll of DonorsThank you to our 2016-2017 donors for their investment in the mission and vision of Habitat OC. Our entire community is strengthened by their support.

faith spotlightChurches Answer The CallEarly in July 2016, leaders from four south county Catholic Churches gathered in a small classroom at St. Timothy Catholic Church in Laguna Niguel. The group was brainstorming ways to effect lasting change in the face of the Orange County housing crisis. This newly-formed Catholic Coalition soon decided to work with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and take on the challenge of building a new, affordable home. The four churches were joined by more than a dozen more Catholic organizations in just three months.

“The beauty of the Catholic Coalition is watching our Corpus Christi community come together to help deserving families in the broader community rebuild their lives,” said Jeannie Brensen, a coalition member. “As a mother, it is important to me to participate in efforts that lift up children and their families, such as Habitat for Humanity. Helping a family establish their stable home is such a rewarding experience, knowing it will make such a difference in their lives.”

During a kickoff dinner in October, it was announced that the newly-expanded Catholic Coalition would boldly commit $150,000 and monthly build days to the completion of the two Tustin homes in support of limited-income veteran families. Since the announcement of the project’s goals, each committed organization has approached the challenge with awe-inspiring support and positivity. Coalition members are working, praying, and fundraising together to support the development of these two homes in Tustin. The coalition – one of the largest coalitions in Habitat OC’s 29-year history – is looking forward to dedicating the new homes in 2018.

“After hearing about Habitat’s Catholic Coalition, my wife and I were able to offer a small matching fund on behalf of our new parish, Blessed John Henry Newman Catholic Church in the Ordinariate,” said Gregg Herr, a coalition member. “As a result of that, an anonymous donor met and exceeded the match! But the story did not end there. That donor was able to apply for and obtain an additional corporate match, increasing the originally envisioned contribution by fivefold! The increased contribution allowed an amount to be given on behalf of our marrieds group, Christian Family Movement of Orange County. It was an honor to participate in this way, and especially to support veterans in need.”

The Habitat for Humanity of Orange County ReStore locations in Anaheim and Santa Ana are non-profit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell quality new and gently-used furniture, appliances, home décor, and building materials to the public at discounted prices. Proceeds help fund the

construction of affordable Habitat for Humanity of Orange County homes. The public is encouraged to shop, donate, and volunteer.

What We Accomplished in 2016-2017

• Voted #1 Best Home Goods store in Orange County on The OC Hotlist for the third year in a row.

• Raised more than $40,000 through our fuel recovery program. These donations help defray the costs associated with providing a donation pick-up service.

• Received and resold nearly 7,500 donations of new and gently-used home furniture and building materials, with each donation including either one or multiple items, increasing our donations by more than 30% from the previous year.

• Collected and diverted 152,577 pounds of electronic waste and other recyclables from the landfill.

• Raised nearly $5,000 through the Register Round-Up program. These donations are given by Habitat OC ReStore shoppers rounding up the change from their in-store purchases to donate to Habitat OC.

• Logged nearly 7,500 volunteer hours from a total of nearly 2,000 volunteers at the Anaheim and Santa Ana Habitat OC ReStore locations, an increase of nearly 10% from the previous year, reducing our operating costs by more than $200,000.

• Continued our partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County through their Holiday Food Drive.

• True Value Hardware donated seven trailer trucks filled with brand-new home improvement items from a company trade show, including hardware, tools, lawn and garden supplies, outdoor furniture, décor, and more. Volunteers served more than 1,500 hours packing up the donation from the Anaheim Convention Center. To date, the True Value items have brought in more than $157,000 to the Habitat OC ReStore - dollars that will help us build more affordable homes in Orange County.

p r e v i e w2018In this Annual Report, we nod our heads to the power of growth. It is the place to celebrate our fiscal year 2016-2017 accomplishments and to recognize those who helped us continue our mission of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Because of you, we have been able to serve more than 1,400 women, men, and children in Orange County. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for offering families a hand-up, not a handout, and to share news on our future plans.

Looking ahead, Habitat OC plans to:• Begin building two homes in Fullerton and two homes in Tustin.

• Complete two homes in Placentia and five homes in Santa Ana.

• Continue to vigorously market our homes for sale to active military, veterans and to families of fallen warriors.

• Expand the Habitat Hand-Up Home Repair program throughout Orange County, with a focus in Anaheim.

• Open a third Habitat OC ReStore in 2018.
