Creating an upward spiral
“Not only is it the case that happy people are
more willing to help others, but as I generally
point out, helping others is the best way to
help yourself, the best way to promote your
own happiness. It is you, yourself, who will
receive the benefit.” - Dalai Lama
UWell Explained
UWell is a universal mental health promotion
model for strengthening sources of wellbeing
and vitality.
UWell is underpinned by the Salutogenic
model of health and several other evidenced-
based and emergent bodies of research.

Sense-making a Solution
Emergent and Collaborating
The UWell model brings together systems
thinking, awareness-based collective action
and prevention and behavioural science.
Theory U (2006 - Scharmer)
Salutogenic model of health (1979 - Antonovsky)
Emotives theory (1997 - Reddy)
Beneficial Action theory (2016 - Toumbourou)
Benefit Mindset model (2017 - Buchanan and Kern)
Cultivating the Social Field
Theory U is a learning and management method
and the title of a book by Otto Scharmer.
Theory U principles help break through past
unproductive patterns of behaviours and
empathize with an eco-system perspective to
tackle complex issues of our times by stepping
into the field of the future.
Salutogenic Model of Health
Salutogenesis is a medical approach focusing on factors
that support human health and well-being, rather than
on factors that cause disease (pathogenesis).
Central to Antonovsky’s Salutogenic model of health is
the Sense of Coherence which is formula that has three
components:
Sense of Coherence
Comprehensibility:
Believing that the challenge is understood.
Manageability:
Believing that resources to cope are available.
Meaningfulness:
Wishing to, be motivated to, cope.
Important Third Component
Meaningfulness - If a person believes there is no
reason to persist and survive and confront
challenges, if they have no sense of meaning,
then they will have no motivation to comprehend
and manage life events.
NOTE: Research demonstrates that a strong Sense of
Coherence predicts positive health outcomes.
Emotives Manage and Shape
Emotives describe the process by which
emotions are managed and shaped, not only by
society and its expectations but also by
individuals themselves as they seek to express
the inexpressible, namely how they "feel".
Beneficial Emotive uses this theory to influence
actions that motivate a mind-shift towards
creating an upward spiral of well being and
vitality
Beneficial Action
Beneficial Action is prosocially and altruistically
motivated behaviour that uses consequential
knowledge to increase freedom within the
global population.
Four principles: (1) We should encourage actions that
maximise the freedom of human and non-human
populations to live longer and with more choices.
This will increase everyone’s freedom and it can happen
by encouraging (2) actions that have prosocial and
altruistic intent, (3) greater knowledge of the
consequences of our actions, and (4) understanding and
care toward foreign and non-human populations.
The Benefit Mindset
A Benefit Mindset builds on a growth mindset,
where we not only seek to fulfil our potential,
but choose to do it in a way that serves the
wellbeing of all.
