Engaging Future Advocates

Option 1• Utilize Rainforest Alliance online tool (refer to Pitch: Building a Foundation)

Option 2• Launch an online campaign advertising the card system using twitter and blogs• Engage sustainability influencers and get them to advertise the card system incentive • Through facebook and other social networks, inform students that they can help mobilize the sustainability movement by engaging local businesses

• Students can use the card system as an incentive for businesses to serve certified coffee

• Rainforest Alliance resources:• Online guide on how to engage local businesses

Step 2. Sustained Support Through Incentives

Card system

Rewards card• Issue RA cards with barcodes • Businesses will scan the barcode with each purchase of certified coffee• Each barcode corresponds to an online account

What will the card system do?• Track how much certified coffee students are drinking• Show that by drinking certified coffee they are saving the rainforest through an online tool • Students get discounts and free stuff for drinking a certain amount of certified coffee

Requirements• Businesses: barcode reader• Rainforest Alliance: mobile computing, data capture, database system, web interactive tools

Online account• Link to social community - Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Flikr• Check card balance• Stats: consumed certified coffee, contribution to saving rainforests

Interactive learning tool• Students take quizzes and earn points (for discounts and free stuff)• Perform challenges to earn points

Online community and other resources• Interaction with RA local community - like-minded socially conscious citizens• “Toolbox” - guide that enables students to engage local businesses• Discussion board with moderators from the community - forum for strategies, shared experience, etc…

Developing an iPhone app• Participate in Singlebrooks’ Sustainable iPhone App Program (http://www.singlebrook.com/contest) and win a FREE custom iPhone application for a non-profit organization (deadline: August 15, 2010).

The Application• Tips on how to engage local businesses• Shows user’ statistics• Optional: Map with nearby businesses serving certified coffee

Recognition and publicity• Good marketing strategy• Online tool will record how much certified coffee is sold using the card system or their “Green Index”• Collaborate with Yelp to record businesse’s “Green Index”• Business that is rated the “greenest” will be featured in RA website• Collaborate with FourSquare to highlight businesses serving RA certified coffee
