programs contributes to the success in creating life long readers.
Some programs and activities are:
• Turning a New Page• The Arizona Reading
Program• Aspire• Reading Clubs and
Contest• Storytelling• Poetry Club

Readers• Studies have
shown that programs such as Accelerated Reader have enhanced students reading interest.
• Intrinsic motivation has been proven to be the most long lasting reward method to encourage a lasting love of reading.
• Teaching reading through assigned text and answering follow up questions is an older spin on reading strategies. This approach assesses literal understanding, it doesn’t teach reading.

Strategies to Create Life Long Readers
Teach students reading comprehension
strategies such as:a. Questioningb. Reflectingc. Gathering informationd. Distinguishing relevant information
from less important information.
Teachers should read a personal book of their own and share personal connections to engage students in reading.
Teach students to apply prior knowledge to new knowledge they retain while reading.
Trivia games and puppet shows are good ways to assess student’s reading comprehension and encourage students to read so they will succeed at these activities.
Teach students to draw inferences by predicting based on their thoughts and opinions about the text.
Give students sticky-notes to jot down ideas and apply strategies while reading.

Students can retain meaning from reading by stopping periodically in the text and communicating with themselves about what they are reading.

Students make connections with characters, authors, setting, plot, etc while reading.

• Students construct meaning from the text by questioning to clarify confusion, solving problems, developing new understandings, etc.
• Students visualize information by creating mental images, stimulating their imagination, and placing themselves in the novel.
Students can predict issues in the story by making inferences based on story themes, pictures/ cover page, clues that text offers.
To find important information students may answer a specific question, build on prior knowledge, state what is interesting in the story, etc.
Students gather information together by: • periodically stopping to analyze
thoughts before reading on• summarize information by writing• Personalizing the information to make it
meaningful.
Students who are life long readers use the teach taught strategies and engage themselves in enjoyable and rewarding texts. This combination is a guide to creating life long readers!
