With offices in China (Zhuhai and Shanghai), Hong Kong and Macau, Birkdale provides landscape architects, developers, contractors and governments with a total package. This package includes an extensive range of quality trees, palms, shrubs and turf plus the necessary services to ensure that projects are executed with ease, confidence and accuracy.

To service its major markets in China, Hong Kong, Macau and international markets, Birkdale has a large production nursery, turf farm and tree farm in China and a tree farm in Australia (see facilities section on page 5).

To supply plants from an even wider diversity of climatic conditions and provide flexibility in meeting seasonal requirements, Birkdale has an international network of quality suppliers from China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Lebanon, Europe and Australia. This also substantially increases its ability to supply large quantities of plants.

To assist landscape architects, developers and landscape contractors with plant selection to meet their specific project requirements, Birkdale has an interactive Product Catalogue which has a diverse range of criteria. Selections can be made without knowing the names of the plants.

Birkdale is experienced in servicing large scale, high profile international landscape projects such as integrated parks and resorts, commercial and residential developments, golf courses, sports fields, government and public works projects, as well as botanic and large private gardens.

Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery Limited Shanghai Jade Garden Branch was registered in Shanghai in December 2011 to undertake landscape projects in this region.

The Birkdale (Shanghai) Group, an alliance of well connected and highly respected companies and individuals interested in expanding their business opportunities, was formed and gives Birkdale the ability to provide products and services over a wider area of China.

Disney Shanghai has commenced construction with Birkdale providing horticultural and project management services and installation training to this prestigeous international joint venture between the Shanghai Government and the Disney Corporation.

The Directors of Birkdale International have combined the experience and expertise of Birkdale Nursery (Australia), Asian Sportsturf (Hong Kong) and Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery (China). Birkdale Nursery in Australia was an established international horticulture company with a proven track record, over 22 years, in exporting plants and horticulture services throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Pacific Islands with clients including Disneyland Hong Kong and the Royal Families in Bahrain, Brunei and Japan. In 2006, Birkdale, which was already well established in China, consolidated its nursery operations in Zhuhai, China so that it could focus on its projects in Hong Kong, China and Macau. James McGeoch Birkdale International Limited, DirectorJames is a Director of Birkdale International Limited (Hong Kong), Director of Landscape and Nursery Division for Shanghai Shendi Garden Investment and Construction Company Limited, Senior Consultant for Shanghai Gardens Group Company Limited and Managing Director, McGeoch’s Birkdale Nursery Pty Ltd (Australia).

He brings over 42 years horticultural and over 22 years exporting experience to the company as Managing Director of Birkdale Nursery from 1982-2006. Birkdale Nursery was well known for its high quality horticultural products and export services throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Pacific Islands and was a leader in the Australian horticultural industry.

James is highly respected in the Australian and international horticultural industry and has held leadership positions on several Australian national boards. From 1997-2001, he was Chairman of the Horticultural Research and Development Corporation of Australia and from 1999-2001, he was Chairman of the Joint Rural Research and Development Corporations. He is also a Past Member of the Rural Innovation Advisory Council (a Federal Government ministerial appointment). His contribution to outstanding service to the Australian nursery industry was recognised by him being named ‘Nurseryman of the Year’ in 1999.

James has a deep understanding of the complexities of the international market and provides a wealth of knowledge in this arena. He has been based in Asia for the past 12 years, living and working in the Philippines, Hong Kong, China and Macau.

Darren Moseley Birkdale International Limited, DirectorDarren is a Director of Birkdale International Limited (Hong Kong), Managing Director, Asian Sportsturf Limited (Hong Kong) and Zhuhai Dai Yi Golf and Landscape Company (China).

Qualified in Horticulture and Turf Management, Darren’s career spans 22 years in the turf and golf course construction industry with 18 years experience in South East Asia. Asian Sportsturf Limited is regarded as one of the world’s premier golf course construction companies with clients including Hong Kong Golf Club, Hong Kong Jockey Club. In 2005, following his work with Disneyland Hong Kong, he commenced business in the landscape sector.

Darren is experienced in the project management of all aspects of turf grass, landscape construction and maintenance. He was an international finalist for the Australian Golf Course Superintendents’ Claude Crockford Environmental Award when he was Golf Course Superintendent at the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course.

Barbara McGeoch Director, Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery LimitedBarbara is a Director of McGeoch’s Birkdale Nursery Pty Ltd (Australia), Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery Limited (China) and General Manager of Emaho Trees (Australia). 

Over the last 21 years, she has helped to build Birkdale’s international presence including an impressive global network of quality suppliers to ensure Birkdale meets the diverse and demanding requirements of clients in markets throughout Asia and the Middle East.

In 2002, she was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year by Femmes Chefs d’Enterprises Mondiales at their International Congress in St. Petersburg. In 1999, she received the prestigious Westpac/Australian Institute of Export ‘Heroes Award’ for outstanding service to Australia’s export efforts.

Currently, she is a Director of the Australian Institute of Export which focuses on education and raising the awareness of the importance of export to Australia’s economy.

Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery ZHuHAI, GuANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA

Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery, a 12 hectare site 40 minutes from Macau and Hong Kong, was established in 2002 to provide a supply base for the landscaping of Disneyland Hong Kong and other landscape projects in the region. Over 3 million shrubs and 5,000 mature trees were either grown on-site at the nursery or sourced from suppliers across South East Asia and Australia for the Disney Hong Kong project alone.

In 2008, a large shadehouse of 6,500 square metres and 12 metres high was constructed to acclimatize plants specifically for high end indoor use. Special containers are used for large trees and palms to protect root balls and facilitate planting. Photographs of the shadehouse and the trees and palms in their special containers are in the Products section on page 6.

The nursery meets international quality standards and is accredited by the Chinese Government to export plants. Current stock at the nursery includes an extensive range of trees, palms and shrubs, including Australian native species. An Availability List sets out the stock ready for sale including Australian native species.

Zhuhai Turf Farm ZHuHAI, GuANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA

The Turf Farm is 12 hectares and produces top quality Seashore Paspalum turf for high profile projects in Hong Kong and China. It is sand based, fully irrigated and is maintained to the highest standard using the latest turf maintenance equipment.

Gaoming Tree Farm GAOMING, GuANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA

Emaho Trees RAVENSBOuRNE, QuEENSLAND, AuSTRALIA

Birkdale can access high quality street and parkland trees which are grown in–ground for projects in Australia and internationally. Emaho Trees grows a range of hardy Australian native and rainforest species which are well suited to a wide range of climatic conditions from subtropical to cool temperate.

Photographs of the trees can be viewed in the Product section of the website under four specific categories based on common landscape requirements.

An Availability List sets out the quantities of trees with their height, spread, clear trunk and trunk caliper measurements.

Thailand Nursery RATCHIBuRI, THAILAND

These facilities have been established for the preparation and exportation of trees and shrubs to markets within South East Asia. For the Disneyland Hong Kong project, over 670 tropical and equatorial trees (up to 12m tall) and 25,000 shrubs (up to 1.5m tall) were exported from these facilities from 2003-2005.

Birkdale’s horticultural networks in Australia, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Lebanon and Europe provide significant benefits to landscape projects (depending on their location) such as continuity of supply, cost effective production and freight savings. An experienced team of logistical managers well versed with exporting/importing, ensure that the plants arrive in good condition and meet the quarantine requirements of the importing country.

Golf Course Construction and MaintenanceBirkdale specializes in the construction, maintenance, design and consultancy for golf courses. Projects include some of the leading golf courses in the world such as the Hong Kong Golf Club and Fancourt Country Club in South Africa.

The training program includes providing clients with a customised course rating system that allows the facility to graphically and numerically determine its current condition. Sports Field Construction and Maintenance Birkdale specialize in the construction and reconstruction, management and maintenance of high quality sports field surfaces including football pitches, rugby pitches, cricket squares (both natural and synthetic), tennis courts and lawn bowls greens. Design, construction and maintenance packages are tailored for our clients. Laser grading technology is used to provide a level playing surface. Nursery Design and ConstructionBirkdale, over the past 24 years has designed, constructed and operated nurseries in Indonesia, Philippines, China, Thailand and Australia, with an emphasis on quality to meet international standards.

Birkdale offers a wide range of plants to importers, either grown at its own production nurseries or sourced from its international network of suppliers.

Over the last 17 years, Birkdale has established a professional and reliable international network of suppliers from Australia, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Lebanon and Europe which enables it to supply an extensive range of trees, palms and shrubs to meet the specifications of landscape architects globally and suit a wide diversity of climatic conditions.

Experienced people supervise the special preparation and packaging to ensure that all plants meet the importing country’s entry criteria and arrive in good condition.

Method statements can be provided which demonstrate the treatments undertaken and give advice on planting and aftercare for the trees and palms when they arrive on site.

Air Freight Birkdale recommends air freight to ensure that small plants arrive safely in the best possible condition. They are packed into double waxed cartons designed to be palletised. Larger containerized plants (up to 3m tall) may be packed directly into an air container with temporary shelving installed to enable multiple stacking and minimise movement in transit.

Sea Freight Palms and trees up to 12m tall are packed into 40’ sea containers using techniques pioneered and refined by Birkdale over a 12 year period. These techniques include packing methods that eliminate damage caused by abrasion and specific treatments to reduce stress through eliminating transpiration and preserving moisture within the root ball.

DISNEY Shanghai SHANGHAI 2012–ONGOING

Birkdale is providing horticultural and project management services and installation training to this prestigeous international joint venture between the Shanghai Government and the Disney Corporation.

Roof Gardens HONG KONG 2012–ONGOING

In collaboration with Japanese company, Kawada, Birkdale has constructed roof gardens in Hong Kong using the innovative Midora Chan roof system which is highly efficient and employs water saving technology.

MGM Macau MACAu 2012–ONGOING

Birkdale, in collaboration with Han Hua Landscape Architects has been commisioned to design the new MGM Casino on the Cotai Strip.

Caesars Golf Macau MACAu 2008–ONGOING

Birkdale was commissioned to undertake Phase 1 of the landscape redevelopment for the Macau Orient Golf Course. This included the landscaping of the out-of-play areas for 6 holes to create a links style theme. Birkdale also reconstructed the driving range to create an amphitheatre effect with target golf greens. Phase 2 involved reconstruction of further holes, fairway planting, club house and entrance landscaping. Birkdale is supplying plants on an ongoing basis.

City of Dreams Casino Resort MACAu 2008-2009

The City of Dreams development comprises their Casino/Hotel complex, the Hard Rock Hotel, a Crown Hotel and two Hyatt Hotels on the Cotai Strip. Birkdale is currently undertaking the external soft landscaping on the Level 1 perimeter and a level 3 podium deck where the pools for the hotels are located.

Birkdale supplied 20,000 cubic metres of topsoil to fill the landscape planters. This soil was mixed off-site in China and then transported to site for installation.

A total of 766 advanced trees, 279 advanced palms, 211,868 shrubs, and 4,900 square metres of turf have been supplied. Half the trees, palms and shrubs are on the level 3 podium with the remainder planted around the perimeter and highlighting the entrances.

Zhuhai Birkdale Nursery sourced all the plant material, with the trees and palms for the project being imported from Egypt, Australia, Malaysia and Thailand. All shrubs were procured locally in China.

Fair Lake Luxury Residential Villas SHANGHAI, CHINA 2003-2009

Birkdale supplied Phoenix canariensis from Australia and Macrozamia mooreii from Malaysia. Horticultural advice has been provided over a 5 year period and is ongoing.

Disneyland Hong Kong engaged Birkdale in an extensive range of landscape services over the park’s three year construction programme from 2002-2005 including:

• Sourcing and supply of plants from Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, China and the Philippines – over 3 million shrubs and 5,000 mature trees – including specialist plants such as topiary plant sculptures, 20 x 12m bottle trees from the Australian outback and 84 matched 12m Phoenix canariensis palms, the latter being for the main entrance (photograph on Page 3). From Thailand alone, over 670 tropical and equatorial trees (up to 12m tall) and 25,000 shrubs (up to 1.5m tall) were sourced. This was a world first in terms of scale and quantities of trees and inter-country quarantine cooperation.

• Logistical management of sea freight including 800 x 40’ sea containers of trees, palms, shrubs and groundcovers as well as air freight of delicate plant species from Australia and Thailand.

• Phytosanitary preparation and international plant quarantine procedures to meet Hong Kong government requirements.

• Installed 4,500 trees, 300,000 shrubs, 20,000 aquatic plants and 15 hectares of turf.

• On site liaison with landscape architects, landscape contractors, project managers, administrative staff, safety officers and government inspectors.

• An Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) which involved diagnosis and identification of pest and diseases, selection and implementation of treatment strategies, monitoring and progress reports, and staff training.

• Supplied, laid and maintained the Seashore Paspalum turf for the two little league Baseball Fields that were used for the Asia Pacific Little league Playoffs.

Jockey Club Olympic Equestrian Facilities HONG KONG 2007Constructed sand footing and drainage/profile for the Sha Tin and Beas River Equestrian Facilities.

Jockey Club Olympic Grass Cross Country Training Course HONG KONG 2007Constructed an equestrian cross country turf training track within the centre of the Sha Tin Race Course.

Jockey Club Dressage Training Arena HONG KONG 2006Installed sub soil drainage and a sand profile before laying turf on the 7,000 square metre Dressage Training Arena. The Arena was used for training during the 2008 Olympic Equestrian events.

Hong Kong Golf Club HONG KONG 2006Installed drainage, supplied and laid Paspalum and Zoysia turf for the Old Course Reconstruction Programme.

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club HONG KONG 2006 Supplied and laid Zoysia turf as well as constructing a Cart Path for the 18-hole golf course reconstruction programme.

Hong Kong Cricket Club HONG KONG 2006Reconstructed the Club’s sports field which included the installation of a sub-soil drainage and fully automatic irrigation system. A 300mm sand profile was laid before re-turfing the field using Seashore Paspalum.

Asia Golf Driving Range HONG KONG 2004Constructed an artificial turf golf driving range. The works involved the installation of a sub-soil drainage system prior to the laying of artificial turf.

Kowloon Cricket Club HONG KONG 2002Reconstructed the Club’s sports field which included the installation of 3000m of drainage. The project also included the installation of a fully automatic irrigation system and 300mm sand profile. The field was then re-turfed with Seashore Paspalum.

Fancourt Country Club SOuTH AFRICA 2000Provided turf grass construction and maintenance consultancy services for the Gary Player Group who were contracted to the Fancourt Country Club.

Fuchan Resort CHINA 1999Representing the designer, managed the construction of the 18 hole golf course and rehabilitated the existing Tea plantation and out-of-play landscape areas.
