Creating stability for families overcoming unexpected crises

For the last 35 years, generosity and compassion from donors like you have made it possible for Bay Area residents to overcome extraordinary challenges. Your support has helped our neighbors get back on their feet again after the death of a spouse, being laid off from a job, despite a sudden eviction, and through unthinkable medical challenges.

In March of this year, we saw a dramatic increase in inquiries and applications for assistance. Federal and local COVID-19 safety measures resulted in business closures, layoffs, and furloughs, causing widespread economic instability. Many neighbors were in a position of needing help for the first time. Thanks to an overwhelming outpouring of support from the Season of Sharing community, we were able to respond rapidly to the COVID-19 pandemic and we will continue to extend critical support to our pandemic-affected neighbors for as long as there is a need.

Last year, we provided housing and critical needs assistance to about 5,000 individuals and families who were affected by the pandemic, fires, and other unexpected crises like sudden loss of job and medical emergencies. Through our partnerships with Bay Area food banks, we were also able to provide more than 3.3 million meals. As always, every dollar donated goes directly to assist those in need, as the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund and the San Francisco Chronicle cover all the Fund’s administrative expenses.

For all too many Bay Area residents, one missed paycheck can have a ripple effect, leading to possible homelessness and hunger. With your support, we can give a family the breathing room they need to get back on track.

Our Rapid Response efforts raised $4.7 million, which is enough to assist 1,300 households and provide 1.4 million meals.

We will continue to provide assistance to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as long as the need exists.

Russlyn Nicolas remain in her home while she battled cancer and lost work and wages because of the pandemic.

The Moreno-Ayala Family cover their rent when both parents lost work due to the shutdown.

Linda Voss pay her rent after the hair salon she worked at was shuttered due to the shelter-in-place order.

Funds disbursed in 2019-2020: $11,054,480

Number of households assisted in 2019-2020: Approximately 5,000

Number of meals provided in 2019-2020: Approximately 3.3 million

Funds disbursed since 1986: $150,796,470* (as of September 2020)

Generally, 85 percent of the total funds are distributed for Housing Assistance and Critical Needs, and the remaining 15 percent is allocated to Food Banks for emergency food services.

All administrative expenses are covered by the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund and the San Francisco Chronicle. As a result, 100 percent of the money raised by the Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund goes directly to help the families and communities we serve.
