IMPACT INGUJARAT

RURAL DEVELOPMENTPromoting holistic development of rural communities

KEY INTERVENTIONSAgriculture in the hot & semi-arid Gujarat is largely dependent on erratic monsoons, on top of which only 35% of its cultivated area is even under irrigation. Hence, the Bank - under its Holistic Rural Development Programme (HRDP) - mainly works towards improving: Agricultural practices Horticulture Orchid farming Soil & water conservation measures Natural resource management

The intervention has enhanced livelihoods in over 93 villages across 7 districts in Gujarat - thus reaching over 26,949 households.

CLEAN WATER FOR ALLIn order to provide farmers an efficient water supply, Parivartan introduced the Micro Irrigation System (MIS) in 10 villages of Gujarat, resulting not only in the improvement of yield but also produce. It has allowed farmers to reduce their water requirement per unit area & has improved irrigation efficiency by 50%.

Currently covering about 20 acres, the Bank plans to replicate the project in other villages by organising exposure visits. A Farmer Producer Company will also be set up to engage with MIS suppliers for future requirements.

SAVING DISAPPEARING LIVELIHOODS ON A RIVER’S BANKCentral Gujarat’s expanding deep & narrow ravines are prone to mass erosion during monsoons - threatening the livelihoods of those living near them. To stop the precious soil from getting washed away, Parivartan constructed low-cost gabions to restrict flow & speed. In addition, the Bank has also worked on measures such as land levelling & tree plantation, leading to a significant reduction in soil erosion.

Parivartan has also helped these villagers sustainably deal with rampant & aggravating animal-human conflicts by helping them build fences - hence encouraging those shifting to other hazardous livelihood options such as tobacco-making to continue farming.

DEVELOPMENT OF WATER RESOURCE STRUCTURESTo prevent water source depletion, it has to be used judiciously & allowed to seep into the ground. The Bank has been working on developing water resource structures to help farmers have access to it during summers & improve the region’s ecology by constructing over 4 check dams. They’ve had a multi-fold impact on the lives of the villagers, besides aiding irrigation & improving groundwater levels. The development has also resulted in: Conservation of surface water Recharge of wells & ponds Availability of drinking water Growth of agri-allied activities Increase in vegetative cover

PROMOTION OF EDUCATIONCreating a conducive learning environment in communities

KEY INTERVENTIONSTEACHING TOMORROW’S LEADERSParivartan & Teach to Lead has offered over 50 fellowships to aid a challenged education system. Under it, select candidates from different cities including Ahmedabad have undergone rigorous training & will eventually be placed at different under-resourced schools, thus connecting some of our brightest young minds to the economically disadvantaged - using their immense talent to not only nurture these students but also help them discover their own potential resolve our larger socio-economic issues.

SKILL TRAINING AND LIVELIHOOD ENHANCEMENTUpskilling people in their occupations & training them for placement

KEY INTERVENTIONSPROMOTING A SCIENTIFICALLY MANAGED LIVELIHOODGiven their adaptability to harsh conditions, goat rearing is very popular in Gujarat & is one of its most prominent activities. This is especially true for those living in hillier regions, as traditional agriculture is simply not an option for them.

Parivartan’s Breed Improvement programme has helped many procure goats of a better breed or work with rearers to improve the breed qualities of their existing goats. It has also helped build genetic potential of the goats to increase their body weight & ability to produce more than one kid, besides creating awareness on their scientific management.

The intervention has had a compounded effect on the farmers’ income, with over 45 beneficiaries directly benefiting from the programme across the villages of Navamota, Choliya & Chhochar.

IMPACT INGUJARATFocused on improving sanitation facilities & promoting safe hygiene practices

KEY INTERVENTIONSSCHOOL SANITATION PROJECTThe lack of equipped sanitation facilities in schools not only puts the children at risk of illnesses but also affects their education - making it a significant reason for school dropouts, particularly among girls.

Parivartan stresses on constructing fully equipped sanitation units in schools for the underprivileged, thus directly impacting the children’s health. In Valsad, the Bank constructed sanitation units in 5 state-run schools which were selected after a detailed survey & also considered the suggestions of Village Development Committees, School Management Committees & Gram Panchayats. To ensure their maintenance, the schools were briefed & thoroughly checked before being entrusted with the responsibility.

These gender-separate toilets eventually improved the attendance of the students by eliminating their chances of falling ill, while their availability made girls feel safer & helped them manage their menstrual life better. In addition, they were also made environment-friendly.

SUSTAINABLE EMPLOYMENT GENERATION THROUGH ORGANIC FARMING

STORIES OF PARIVARTAN

LOCATION: NANDOD TALUKA, NARMADA DISTRICTBENEFICIARIES: YOUNG FARMERS FROM 10 VILLAGES

THE CHALLENGE:Like the residents of many other villages in its vicinity, those in the taluka of Nandod are largely agrarian in nature. However, an unpredictable, harsh climate in addition to market pressures have long forced many of these farmers to resort to various measures to help boost their productivity - including the use of expensive artificial pesticides that subsequently affect the arability of their land.

OUR INTERVENTION:With the support of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India), Netrang & the local Village Development Committees (VDC), Parivartan - under HRDP - has worked towards livelihood enhancement via promotion of cheap, non-pesticide, organic farming to increase productivity & income. In 10 of the programme’s project villages, the youth - mostly employed as daily wage labourers due to their lack of education - were made interested through meetings that taught them sustainable & more profitable methods of agriculture, besides making them aware of the harmful effects of using artificial implements. This was followed by different types of training - ranging from how to create organic manure to how to conserve water when farming.

THE RESULT:Young farmers now not only generate sustainable income through organic farming but are more aware of the benefits resulting from it.

MODERNISING AGRICULTURE

STORIES OF PARIVARTAN

LOCATION: MATARWADA VILLAGE, POSHINA BLOCKBENEFICIARIES: 315 HOUSEHOLDS

THE CHALLENGE:Pargi Jamnaben Arjanbhai is a resident of Matarwada, a tribal village deprived of natural resources & lacking in basic agricultural infrastructure. Dependent on rain for their largely undiversified farming, its residents are socioeconomically marginal with an average annual income of roughly Rs. 35,000.

OUR INTERVENTION:In 2019, the Bank - in partnership with Collectives for Integrated livelihood Initiatives (CInI) & under HRDP - began collaborating with the community to improve agricultural practices through methods such as Package of Practices (PoP) for each crop, besides introducing improved irrigation systems & developing market linkages. A member of the Kavita Self Help Group (SHG), Jamnaben accordingly began diversifying her usual crop basket with the likes of tomatoes, watermelons & chilis. Having acquired knowledge of newer farming techniques, she & her husband even built a nursery for raising quality saplings which they would supply to fellow farmers.

THE RESULT:Not only did Jamnaben’s crop productivity increase by 35% due to diversifying & using modern farming techniques, but she was able to increase her income by an astounding 100%. Her story is now inspira-tional to other farmers in her community, leading them to similarly adopt PoP & diversification.

C VID HIGHLIGHTSSPREADING AWARENESS & PROVIDING CRUCIAL SHORT-TERM SUPPORT TO THOSE IN NEED

Spreading AwarenessThe spreading of the COVID-19 virus is actually avoidable when the right kinds of precautions are taken: but unfortunately, due to a lack of literacy in our country’s marginalised sectors, a lot of this crucial information is often inaccessible to them. Parivartan - in partnership with CInI & Tata Trusts - has hence produced awareness videos to disseminate this information to communities across Gujarat.

Linkages For LivelihoodsThe current pandemic has hit the agricultural sector hard, due to the fact that procuring agricultural labour & selling often perishable produce have become doubly difficult due to the lockdown. The Bank under HRDP hence worked towards securing these valuable market linkages for farmers in the Sabarkantha district, besides also providing timely, affordable & quality inputs for summer crops & dairy feed.

Engaging LabourNearly 10-15% of Sabarkantha’s population seasonally migrate to the cities to find work. However, the current lockdown has made even that impossible, leaving them without any income. Given that the government has recently restarted projects related to the MGNREGA, Parivartan has worked with the local Panchayats to engage many erstwhile labourers in work ranging from pond desilting to check dam building, hence ensuring them gainful employment in their own villages.
