In design, TEXTURE can be described as either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when it is touched, or how the human eye sees it visually when looking at a two-dimensional work.

These two types of textures are known as TACTILE and VISUAL textures.

What is Texture?

Tactile Texture literally means how it physically feels when it is touched. The actual surface either needs to be felt, or be seen with light shining across its’ surface to make the texture visible.

Artists and designers like to take advantage of this type of texture by adding materials such as paint or sand onto their work in order to liven it up. Contrasts of texture will usually be far more interesting than using one texture across the entire artwork.

An example of this kind of texture is wallpaper or carpet.

Tactile Texture

Visual Texture refers to the illusion of the surface’s texture. In design, it is used to give the physical appearance of a tactile texture, but on a two-dimensional surface.

Textures that are seen in photographs, for example, are visual textures. No matter how rough the objects look, the actual photo is smooth and flat, giving a three-dimensional look on a two-dimensional surface.

Visual Texture

It is possible for an object or design to have no texture at all. This is when it is one colour and is flat to the eye and has a smooth appearance to it.

Can an object have no texture?

Symbollic Textures

Wavy lines could symbolize water, waves or rolling terrain

Overlapping circles give the look of fish scales

A grid of lines could suggest linen fabrics or wire mesh,

Shape…• Shape is made up of one or more lines, which are closed.

So a shape is made up of lines around it, with an 'inner-soul' if you will. Shapes can be organic or geometric. A shape can also be enhanced or improved by using tone, texture or colour. Shape on it's own is Two Dimensional.

Tone...• Tone is pretty much the lightness and darkness of a form or

shape. By using different tones we can create volume and 3D effects.

Texture...• For desktop publishing, tactile texture is the feel of the

paper. Is it smooth to the touch or rough? Textures can also be visual. On the Web, especially, backgrounds that simulate familiar fabrics, stone, and other textures are common.

• Certain printing and finishing techniques such as thermography and embossing can add both tactilel and visual textures to a printed piece.

• Thank for listening ….. Any Questions?
