Students from the University’s School of art & Design have received funding from the tony Dewberry Memorial award to hold an art exhibition at newton park. installations around the campus range from outdoor sculptures and trails to digital prints and words transformed into art. their inspiration was drawn from concepts such as how man relates to nature, peace in the environment, industrial designs, and humanity’s drive to develop and change.

What better way to see our stunning campus than by seeking out these thought-provoking exhibits!

an installation by Julie Verhoeven, sponsored by Bath Spa University’s School of art & Design.

artist and designer Julie Verhoeven has been commissioned to produce an installation inspired by the city and specially created for Bath in Fashion 2013. her work is multi-disciplined across art and fashion, from illustration and video to design consultancy, and is famous for its exquisitely avant-garde quality and surreal composition.

She has collaborated with some of the biggest names in fashion, including louis Vuitton, John Galliano, Versace, loewe, Mulberry, topshop and h&M.

of students ran a social media experiment for a major creative industries conference in Bath this year. 15 publishing and film students developed a successful social media strategy – the conference hashtag trended globally – and delivered a variety of film and digital content. Conference organisers described working with our creative team as setting a “benchmark” for future university engagement.

parisian playboy Bernard is quite the ladies’ man, with three glamorous fiancées jetting in and out of his life! all of these gorgeous girls are air hostesses flying on different airlines. their schedules mean that they never meet and as Bernard doesn’t intend to actually marry any of them, what could possibly go wrong? a farce of mile-high proportions written by Marc Camoletti and translated by Beverley Cross and Francis evans. scan to book tickets:

Working with Schools & Widening Participation

Write now is an exciting new initiative which brings together – and expands on – the excellent outreach work carried out in the Bath and north east Somerset area by the Department of Creative Writing and publishing. Creative Writing lecturer and Director of Write now, Mimi thebo, developed the first phase, through which staff and postgraduate students ran writing workshops, sharing our expertise with schools and the wider community. the new programme and website will be launched at the telegraph Bath Children’s literature Festival in September 2013.

the school Magazine Project works with local secondary school pupils and teachers, to help schools create their own digital magazine – offering opportunities for student writers, editors, photographers, artists, designers. launched during Bath Digital Festival in collaboration with Frome College, the royal high School, oldfield School and St Marks School, this innovative project offers Ba publishing staff and undergraduates the chance to share their skills. the aim is to create an online learning package, to enable all schools to participate.

take a little time out to listen to and enjoy Charles Wiffen playing ravel, Gaspard de la nuit and Chopin, Ballade no. 1 in G minor, op. 2 on the piano in the atmospheric environment of the holburne Museum.

Charles Wiffen is head of Music at Bath Spa University and has performed extensively internationally and in the UK, including at the Wigmore hall and purcell room. he has recorded a number of CDs and broadcasts live for BBC radio 3 and Classic FM.

Bath spa University has recently announced a new partnership project with the service Children support network – an initiative which will trial an educational enrichment and support project for primary and secondary aged children from armed service families in schools across Wiltshire and somerset in 2013.

Cast your imagination adrift for arthur ransome’s tale of camping, sailing and dastardly piracy. this action-packed ‘play with music’ will utterly absorb audiences into the children’s world – set sail across the lake, learn to swim with roger and titty and join battle against Captain Flint. this timeless tale has been adapted for the stage by helen edmundson (Coram Boy) with music by neil hannon (the Divine Comedy).

Create.Connect 2013 showcases the new and emerging creatives from Bath Spa University’s Creative Media practice course. this event will demonstrate a range of work in a variety of media from short films to printed work such as magazines and photography.

the Ba (hons) Creative Media practice is a new kind of degree provision at Bath Spa University, alert to the needs of industry and developed in partnership with it. it enhances creative potential through a curriculum that fosters individual expression in a context of professional practice. the final year of the course is delivered at the University’s studio and production facilities at paintworks, where students are surrounded by emerging digital, creative and media businesses and work with a range of industry clients.

an uplifting evening of classical music from the talented musicians of Bath Spa University.

the University’s Wind ensemble offers a programme that includes Beethoven’s octet in e-flat major, op. 103. Composed in Beethoven’s early years, this piece has emerged as one of the most important works of the genre, and possesses all the wit and sparkle of his best compositions.

the evening is completed by the University’s chamber choir, who will sing a programme that ranges from the Baroque choral music of handel to the work of contemporary British composer John tavener.

Bath abbey in collaboration with Bath Spa University presents an exhibition composed of new artworks made by 11 artists, as well as a limited edition publication with commissioned photography and design by two current Bath Spa University students. the artists met at Bath Spa University and the group comprises professional artist alumni, current students and staff from the School of art & Design.

the publication includes texts by alan Garrow, Vicar theologian at Bath abbey, professor Mike tooby, Dean of Bath Spa University’s School of art & Design, and Claire todd, artist/phD researcher and the project curator.

did you know? heritage and history students from Bath spa University are working with Bath abbey as part of a lottery-funded oral history project, which will capture the stories of the many individuals involved in caring for the abbey’s fabric or who worked on restoring the building.

this exhibition takes a look behind-the-scenes into a range of roles in the creative industries, to explore different motivations, inspirations and ways of working. Contributions focus on film and television production, creative writing, and marketing and advertising. the exhibition has been developed between Bath Spa University, the Museum of Bath at Work and local organisations in the creative industries.

the open evening is an opportunity to explore the exhibition and participate in discussions based around screenings, slide shows and readings from exhibition contributors.

Spread over 10 days and two venues, the art & Design Degree Show features the exciting output from graduating students in Graphic Communication, textile & Fashion Design, photography & Digital Media, 3D Design, Creative arts and Fine art.

the Bath School of art & Design was founded more than 160 years ago and has a successful history and an international reputation for creativity and innovation. the School provides students with the opportunity to work with a wide range of internationally recognised art and design practitioners and thinkers.

did you know? Bath spa University and the trevor osborne Charitable trust have joined forces to offer students the chance to develop a body of work based on Porthleven in Cornwall and win one of five fully-funded 10-day art residencies based at the Porthleven lifeboat art studio. this is an excellent opportunity for students to gain professional artistic experience and promote their own work and practice to commercial galleries, prospective customers and clients.

electric Dreams is a red-carpet, black tie, glitz & glamour evening, to premier the thesis films of Bath Spa University’s performing arts students. the event includes an awards ceremony, where awards are presented for Best actor and actress in a leading role, Best actor and actress in a Supporting role, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Film.

did you know? Multi award-winning film director, Ken loach, has an honorary doctorate from Bath spa University and his film ‘the angels’ share’, which won the Jury Prize at the 2012 Cannes film festival, was screened at Bath spa University to raise funds for Community arts therapies – a charity Ken supports as Patron.

Students from Bath Spa University’s department of music will celebrate the end of the academic year with their popular annual gala concert featuring the University’s symphony orchestra, choir, wind band and Georgian band. the programme will include music from West Side Story as well as concerto performances by final year students.

Bath spa graduate, alistair King, is resident Composer with the amadeus orchestra – one of the world’s foremost training orchestras for young professionals and music students. as an orchestrator/composer/conductor, he’s written music for a range of film and tV soundtracks, including shrek, harry Potter and downton abbey.

the Graduate Fashion Show is the culmination of work completed on the Ba (hons) Fashion Design course and showcases the final collections designed, created and made by the students. these collections will be showcased on professional catwalk models from london and the show will be directed by an internationally-renowned producer. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the work of the designers of tomorrow!

Bath spa fashion student, stephanie Kitchen, won the 2013 fashion awareness direct (fad) national competition and iconic fashion journalist and tatent spotter hilary alexander selected her work to be showcased on the catwalk at london fashion Weekend, saying “the winning entry was outstanding in concept, inspiration, execution and creativity – with an extremely high degree of sustainability, wearability and commercial appeal as well”.

Graphics & Photography exhibitionWednesday 19 – sunday 23 June 2013

this exhibition features work by eighty second year students in Ba Graphic Communication and Ba photography and Digital Media courses. Set over several floors of a shop the exhibition will show print publications, photographic prints, as well as moving image and installation work. in addition, the show will feature creative activities for the public to take part in, which will give insights into these two courses.

did you know? Bath spa graphic communications graduate, sophie Kemp, won the d&ad new Blood award 2012 for her project ‘1 down 2 sit’ – a photographic exploration of the people behind Crufts.
