Spring 2015 birmingham hippodrome’s creative learning programme continues to provide our young audiences with the best possible theatre experience. Through our imaginative and innovative in-school and theatre based activities, participants of all ages and abilities are able to discover new skills, designed to enrich and enhance the experience and excitement of live theatre. The Main Attraction Offers formal education provision to enhance the main stage productions through: Workshops: specially designed one-off with show related themes Teaching Resources: including workpacks, video footage and links with actors Cast related opportunities: Q & A sessions with members of the company; open rehearsals with the company; workshops led by members of the company Shows include: Aladdin; Mary Poppins; Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo; WNO productions Supporting Roles Primary: Working with schools to develop and deliver bespoke cross arts activities to support schools’ schemes of work and enhance their creative curriculum using and/or adapting dedicated curriculum sources eg Cornerstone. Our workshops will be designed to allow young learners to ‘engage; develop; innovate and express’ their ideas through all the core areas - including literacy, numeracy, science and technology and computing skills. Secondary/Tertiary: Working with subject leaders of Dance, Music, English and Drama to aid teachers to reach their target results. Our experienced practitioners will assist students to attain their true potential by working alongside teachers and lecturers to develop new skills and techniques. Special Schools We offer a range of workshops for young people with varying disabilities by working in partnership with many experienced practitioners, all experts in their field. For example: Open Theatre Company - trail blazers in their work with young people with learning disabilities - using a unique methodology of non verbal, physically-based and imitative play. Hippodrome Heritage – Can you help? This year - we have been lucky enough to be granted Heritage Lottery Funding to research into the incredible history of the Hippodrome and to uncover all our wonderful stories spanning over 116 years - covering 2 world wars; 5 monarchs; 4 face lifts and a million memories. We would like to work with primary, secondary and special schools to develop a heritage project covering KS1, KS2 and KS3 that would be a way at studying in depth the social, national and international history from 1899 to the present day using the timeline of Birmingham Hippodrome itself as the stimulus - looking at ways in which theatre reflects the social history of the time. We need History teachers to help us shape this very exciting work to fit into your school’s curriculum and help us create some very exciting interactive Heritage resources. In return we will offer you free backstage tours for your school and a special seat plaque.
