Carl Sagan said, “The visions we offer our children shape the future.” The United States is currently struggling in key areas of education such as: reading, math, and the sciences, compared to other leading industrialized nations. The purpose of this project was to expose elementary level children to basic engineering principles in a fun and highly educational environment. Thereby increasing their scientific understanding and hopefully encourage a new generation of engineers.

» Exposed children to basic materials engineering principles.˃ Elastic deformation.˃ Plastic deformation.˃ Fracture features of crystalline lattice atomic structures.

» Children bent angel hair pasta in Lego™ stress apparatus.˃ The child that bent the farthest without breaking won!

» Crazing – occurs in plastics during deformation˃ Microscopic cracks form, leading to failure.

» What the students accomplished˃ Measure the sample length.˃ Stretch the sample, without breaking.˃ Measure the final length.˃ Calculate elongation: e=(L-L0)/L0 x100%.˃ Longest elongation wins!
