Kids naturally love to play in the dirt. Potted plants
and flowers are a great way to decorate your home
indoors or out this summer. They make wonderful
homemade gifts, too, especially when you and your
kids decorate the flower pots together.
Need some clever ideas for decorating flower pots
with kids?
Let your flower pots get comfortable with an
"old jeans" look.
A "dressed in jeans" flower pot creates a causal
and fun look and it's easy to do. This is a clever
take-off on sponge painting except you'll useswatches of old jeans to create the denim print.
Materials:
Flower pot
Two shades of blue paint in the "denim" family
Swatches of old jeans
Optional:
Brass jeans button
Hot glue gun or strong adhesive glue
Pocket from old jeans
Bandanna
Easy directions:
Paint the flower pot in the darker shade of blue. Lightly dip jean swatches in the lighter shade and press
against the flower pot, one section at a time, to give the "impression" of denim.
Bonus tips:
If you want to really cowboy up your flower pot, you can add a denim pocket, brass jean button and even a
bandana tucked in and hanging out of the pocket.

Making this as a gift?
Tuck the seed packet into the jeans pocket so the gift recipient will have all the details for caring for their new
plant.
Make an "out of this world" flower pot.
Kids are naturally fascinated by the solar sys tem and planets. Just because plants are only found on Earth
doesn't mean kids can't create a flower pot with all of the planets. This flower pot painting challenge will appeal
to the older kids and it will be fun and educational, too, but don't worry, there's a simple version that is
"glowing" with fun for younger kids.
Materials:
Library book or safe website with pictures of the planets
Dark blue paint for the background
Variety of other colors of paint including yellow, red, white and green
*Neon paints would be cool, too.
Paintbrushes
Chalk
Optional:
Glow in the dark plastic stars
Foam spacers
Strong glue adhesive
Simple directions for younger children:
For younger children simply allow them to paint the background of the pot black or dark blue and let it dry
completely. Sk ipping to the optional materials, let them add the glow in the dark stars using foam spacers so
that the stars are not glued directly onto the flower pot. This fun flower pot will "bloom" at night.
Directions for older kids:
Have kids paint the background of the pot dark blue and let it dry completely. Use chalk to outline where each
of the planets should go before beginning to add the planets. Let each planet dry before adding the next. Nowthey can add glow in the dark stars using spacers or paint them on with neon paints.
What are foam spacers?
Foam spacers are sold wherever you can buy scrapbooking or shadow box craft supplies. Spacers are simply
small cubes of foam that give crafts a 3-D effect. Of course, you can easily create your own.
This project makes a stellar teacher gift!
Make a unique "honey" of a flower pot together.
This fun flower pot the family can decorate together will "bee" really unique. Everyone can add their unique
thumbprints and then turn them into bees.
Materials:
Flower pot
Yellow paint
Black permanent marker
Optional:
Glitter glue
Craft eyes or beads
White paint for pot background

Easy directions:
Whether you paint your pot first for a clean background or leave it natural is completely up to you, but here's
where the fun bee-gins. Let kids dip thumbs in yellow paint and add thumbprints all over the pot. Encourage
them to space them out with enough room to add wings and to make the thumbprints face a variety of
directions for an interesting pattern. Once the thumbprints are completely dry, add wings and antennae with a
black permanent marker.
Bonus tips:
If you really want to buzz up your bee flower pot, you can add glitter glue inside the wings and craft eyes or
beads for eyes.
Making this as a gift?
Have each family member add their name in small letters under one of their thumbprints to make this flower
pot a special keepsake.
