There are 2 ways to be admitted to SDSU: 1) Conditionally admitted for pre-requisite course work only.

or

2) Admission (conditional or classified) for the credential program.

Admission for pre-reqs requires only the completed CSU Mentor application (along with official transcripts and GPA). Being admitted for pre-reqs does NOT guarantee admission to the credential program. Admission to the credential program requires a completed CSU Mentor applicationAND a completed Supplementary Program application. All test scores and clearances must be submitted prior to admission.

Degree Transcripts All credential candidates must have completed (or be in the process of completing) a Bachelor’s degree program. If you are completing your BA/BS at a school other than SDSU, then you will be required to provide one additional official transcript after your degree has been awarded at your school. International Degrees: If you earned your BA outside of the U.S. SDSU requires an official transcript and translation (if transcript is provided in a language other than English). In addiiton, the credential program requires an evaluation of our degree from an approved agency. Basic Skills Requirement The California Education Code specifies that candidates for a credential must verify basic skills proficiency in one of three ways:

1. Passing the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST):

• Go to the CBEST website for test dates, online registration, and more

• Plan to take the exam early in the application process. You must pass all three sections (Reading, Mathematics, and Writing)

• Computer versions of the exam will be offered for a one week period each month. Taking the exam this way is more costly ($105 versus $41 for paper exam), but you are able to take the exam more frequently. For more info visit the CBEST web site.

• Upload a copy of the score sheet you receive in the mail to the online Supplementary application. If you receive your scores after you submit your application then you will need to email it to our Admissions Coordinator at [email protected]

2. The CSET: Writing Skills test (available to MULTIPLE SUBJECT applicants only):

• Go to the CSET site for test dates, online registration, and more.

• Plan to take the exam early in the application process. You must pass this writing exam in addition to the 3 Multiple Subject subtests of CSET.

Page 8: Credential Admissions - newscenter.sdsu.edunewscenter.sdsu.edu/education/ste/files/05213-To_Do_List_Printable...Credential Admissions New Fee effective Fall 2015. Beginning with Fall

• You will need to upload a copy of the score sheet you receive in the mail to the online departmental application. If you receive your scores after you submit your application then you will need to email it to our office at [email protected]

3. Successful completion of both ELM and EPT exams or the CSU EAP exam. For more information on option #3, please visit the CCTC website about the Basic Skills requirement: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl667.pdf Back to "To Do list"...

Teacher

certification must be recommended within that time period in order for the scores to be permanent.

• If you do not obtain a recommendation for your teaching credential within five years, you must retake the appropriate subject matter competency test.

• All CSET subtests must be passed prior to starting student teaching. • Exams may be in progress when applying to the program.Passing scores must be

submitted by the first week in May to be eligible for Fall admission. • SDSU is currently not admitting credential program candidates in Art Education, Physical

Subject Matter Competency (Waiver) Single Subject candidates may meet this requirement through a waiver program (from the undergraduate major).

• Only programs that have been evaluated and approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) fulfill this requirement. SDSU cannot provide courtesy evaluations of subject matter coursework for candidates who graduated from other institutions.

• A list of approved teaching majors for Single Subject Credentials may be found in the SDSU General Catalog under "Teacher Education". Coursework for the approved teaching major may differ from similar academic major requirements for the bachelor's degree.

• Please review the requirements in the General Catalog before meeting with the designated advisor. Reviews should be conducted well in advance of the application for program admission in the event that additional coursework is required.

• Faculty advisors are available during the academic year (fall/spring), but generally are not on campus during the summer session. Please refer to the list of advisors below.

• You must obtain an Advisors Recommendation form (waiver) signed by the designated advisor for the academic teaching major on this campus (see chart below), or a letter from the credentials analyst at another California institution that has an approved subject matter waiver program.

• SDSU is only admitting credential program candidates in Art Education, Physical Education or Music Education who have completed the following:

• A California approved subject matter waiver Bachelor’s degree program in Art Education, Physical Education or Music Education, and

• Two instructional methods courses in the content area (e.g. Teaching Methods in Music) with attached or included K-12 practica. For more information, contact the Office of Student Services advisors in EBA 259 or email [email protected]

These Single Subject advisors (listed below) will evaluate the subject matter proficiency of students who either have graduated from SDSU or who are formally matriculated at San Diego State University (Open University enrollment through the College of Extended Studies does not constitute formal matriculation). SDSU does not provide evaluation services to individuals who graduated from other universities. Please note that many of the Single Subject teaching majors are in transition to meet new standards established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The designated advisor will be able to provide details.

Early Field Experience (EFE): All candidates must successfully complete a volunteer or paid observation and participation in a “regular” classroom (not a Special Ed class or after school program) in a public schoolwithin the past seven years. The purpose is to get you into a classroom to see what a “day in the life of a teacher” is really about.

This requirement must be COMPLETE and may NOT be in progress when you submit your supplementary program application.

There are several ways to complete this experience:

1. By Taking a Course: Applicants can take coursework that has a fieldwork component in lieu of turning in an EFE Verification page.

SDSU Students: The following courses may be used to fulfill this requirement: • Multiple subject: ED 200 or LS 300 • Single subject: TE 362 (Social Science) or TE 362 (3 unit section only) • PE and music education majors automatically meet the requirement • Art 386A and B for Art candidates only

If you have completed one of the courses above, enter the information in the online Supplementary application and you have satisfied the EFE requirement.

If you have taken a course that you believe fulfills this requirement but is not included in the listing above, you may petition to have it approved. Complete the “Request for Adjustment of Credential Requirements” form and upload this completed form along with the course syllabus to your Supplementary application for faculty review. 2. Through an independent experience: you must complete 45 hours of observation in public California classrooms on your own in the grade level (s) and subject(s) in which you plan to teach. You would need to upload a completed “Early Field Experience” verification page to your online supplementary program application. You can use substitute teaching to meet this requirement--instead of the Verification page you would upload copies of your pay stubs showing 45 hours completed. Early Field Experience verification page

The College of Education Office of Student Services (EBA 259) has a scanner available (free of charge) and can help you with this process.

Note about independent experience: If you have any teaching experience outside the classroom withing the past 7 years such as tutoring, coaching, international teaching experience, private teaching experience... these hours can count for up to 15 of the 45

Only Single Subject applicants are required to complete this assignment. Back to "To Do list"...

Letters of Recommendation Identify at least two people to serve as references. In the recommendation section of your application, you will be prompted to provide the name and e-mail address of the references. The application system will e-mail your references and request that they submit a recommendation on your behalf. You should follow up with each reference, because they have two options for submitting - they may complete the recommendation form you provide, or they may upload a letter they have written. Recommendation from family and friends will not be considered. Recommenders MUST state how they know you in their letter. The two letters should be written from people who know you in different capacities. For example, do not submit two letters from coaches. Recommended references include a professor, an employer, and/or classroom teacher where you have volunteered or worked.

Below are criteria we will consider. Although we do not expect one letter to address them all, we hope that across your letters most of these criteria will be addressed.

The letter should directly comment on the following:

• Your qualifications for a teaching career

• Your experience in multicultural settings

• Your educational experiences

• Your employment experiences

• Your experiences as a volunteer

• Your experience teaching or supervising students or other groups of individuals

• Your potential for success as a teacher Back to "To Do list"...

Tuberculin Clearance: Verification of a negative TB test (verification of no presence or active case of TB through PPD or Mantoux test), must be valid and on file throughout the credential program.

• TB tests are valid for four years and can be taken at the SDSU Health Services (for

students currently enrolled at SDSU) or through any public health clinic, HMO, or private physician.

• If you receive a positive skin test, then you will need to provide proof that your TB is not active by a doctor’s note or x-ray results.

Exit Requirements: The following are not admission requirements, but they must be satisfied prior to obtaining a Preliminary California Teaching Credential. Candidates who have not satisfied these requirements must take the appropriate coursework or examination while completing the teacher credential program.

1. Passing the edTPA Teaching Performance Assessment: This is a performance exercise that you will be working on throughout our program. You will be required to receive a passing score on all parts of this assessment to be eligible for a California credential. 2. Passing Score on RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment): This test is taken during the program after your Reading Methods course. MULTIPLE subject candidates only. 3. U.S. Constitution: All credential candidates are required to verify completion of a collegiate-level course or examination covering the principles and provisions of the United States Constitution. If you are a California State University (CSU) graduate, you have automatically met this requirement. Typically this requirement is satisfied by a general education course covering the colonial period of American history (through 1820) or a course covering American government and politics. A grade of credit, “C” or better must be earned. The U.S. Constitution requirement for credentialing purposes may be different from the graduation requirement for the bachelor’s degree. Contact the Office of Student Services (EBA 259, [email protected]) with questions about other courses.
