It is a personal privilege and honor to accept this responsibility and challenge. I promise that I will discharge my duties to the best of my abilities. In making this pledge, you must know that I will succeed only with your support, your help, your commitment and your effort. I join a long list of men and women who have provided leader- ship to District 7150. It is therefore appropriate that I recognize the efforts of our 2009 District Governor Fred Cholet. He and his team led our District this past year with great distinction. This year I shall be guided by the words of former President Teddy Roosevelt: “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat, and blood, who strives val- iantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.” Rotary is not a “timid soul”. We are in the arena. We are often “marred by dust and sweat, and blood”. We are in the arenas in our communities, in our state, and in our nation and the world all the time striving in worthy causes. Rotary performs great works but we are only as great as our clubs – and our clubs are only as great as the members within them. Each Rotarian is vital and must accept the responsibility of entering the arena. We must build on our past ac- complishments and successes and gain new strength and enthusi- asm as we renew our commitment to promote the ideals of Rotary. Our continuing goal this year is the eradication of polio in the world. This terrible disease has claimed too many lives already. Through the Polio Plus campaign we will ultimately succeed. But people in the United States and throughout the world face other challenges. Rotary is called upon to again “strive mightily” to insure that there is water for the thirsty, healthcare for the in-firmed, food for the hungry and literacy for the uneducated. We all live in a changing world, and if we are to be successful, we must confront this change. If we are to be successful in our endeav- ors, we need to review and examine current practices. We will be driven by the urgency of our mission and guided by the traditions of our past. Hopefully we can build upon our historical foundations continued on page 2

    Thank you for the confidence and trust you have placed in me as your 2010 district governor.

    It is a personal privilege and honor to accept this responsibility and challenge. I promise that I will discharge my duties to the best of my abilities. In making this pledge, you must know that I will succeed only with your support, your help, your commitment and your effort.

    I join a long list of men and women who have provided leader-ship to District 7150. It is therefore appropriate that I recognize the efforts of our 2009 District Governor Fred Cholet. He and his team led our District this past year with great distinction.

    This year I shall be guided by the words of former President Teddy Roosevelt:

    Another great Roosevelt, Eleanor said, “The future be-longs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Consistent with this years Ro-tary International’s theme “Building Communities and Bridging Continents” my dream for us in D7150 is to have a wonderful and success-ful Rotary Year by making Ro-tary Bigger, Better and Bolder.

    years building a successful law practice, then had an idea. It was regarding observations of success and respect which could come from organizing professional acquaintances. More years past. He had given this much thought by the time he and Silvester Schiele walked over to Gus Loehr's office, in Room 711 that cold winter night in 1905, almost 9 years from his arrival in Chicago. Several weeks later, Schiele was elected the first president of Rotary when the meeting was

    held in his office. Harris sug-gested several names, one of them being "Rotary."

    Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation approved an e n a c t m e n t 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations.

    After adopting an amend-ment to change the name from Youth Service, as originally proposed, to New Generations, the Council narrowly sup-ported the addition to article 5 of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. The 263-250 vote was received by surprised gasps and applause after a short debate.

    New Generations joins Club Service, Vocational Serv-ice, Community Service, and International Service as the foundation of club activity. Be-fore starting a project, Rotari-ans are asked to think broadly about how their club and its members could contribute within each avenue.

    “It’s a significant change – a historic day in Rotary,” said Council Chair Mark Daniel Maloney. “Rotarians have al-ways strongly supported youth activities even though they were never part of the four

    Avenues of Service. I think this strengthens our commitment.”

    The Avenue of New Gen-erations recognizes the posi-tive change implemented by youth and young adults in-volved in leadership develop-ment activities, community and international service pro-jects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural under-standing.

    Representative Ronald P. Sekkel, of District 5170 (Cali-fornia, USA), proposed the en-actment by saying that New Generations is the future of Rotary.

    Opponents argued that youth services are already cov-ered by the four Avenues of Service. One representative said that adding a fifth avenue could decrease emphasis on the other four avenues.

    Representative Emile M. Rijcken, of District 1900 (Germany), said the new ave-nue is well deserved.

    “The volume of activity in youth programs shows how strong Rotary can be,” she said. “The addition of New Generations to the Avenues of Service will contribute in an enormous way toward public opinion.”

    tending this event, in Mont-real, with nearly 19,000 Ro-tarians from every corner of the world was indeed a magic Rotary experience.

    With a selection of over 200 project displays, 80 breakout sessions, 40 special Rotary interest events, and five planetary sessions with world renown speakers and entertainment; it was a magic cultural, fun and outstanding Rotary experience. All this while experiencing Queen Noor of Jordan, Dolly Parton, Celtic Thunder, Cique du Se-leil, Russell Watson, and Old Montreal within a short walk-ing distance where End Polio Now, in French, was projected on a building. Oh, let us not forget the earthquake nature threw in for a finally. And ... all this only five hours from downtown Skaneateles.

    This was my sixth conven-tion and I am still completely overwhelmed, at each one, by the multitude of health, educa-tion and humanitarian pro-jects accomplished by Rotari-ans around the world. Try it, you’ll like it!

    Upcoming conventions are to be held: 20-21 May, 2011, New Orleans; 06-09 May 2012, Bangkok, Thailand; 23-26 June, Lisbon, Portugal & 01-04 June, Sydney Australia. A bit greater traveling dis-tance, but each an experience of a life time.

    Rotary for Youth

    Turn Around Jump Shooterby...Cathey Scott, Syr Inner City RC

    The Syracuse Inner City Ro-tary Club sponsored 4 students for the Turn Around Jump Shooters' tournament pre-sented by the Salvation Army, held 6/11 and 6/12. The team made it to the first round of the finals which were held on Sunday 6/12. Mike Hopkins of S.U. was the chairman of the event.

    Changing Leadership

    Rotarians from District 7150 gathered at Dibbles Inn on Wednesday, June 30 to cele-brate the 46th Annual Chang-ing of the Guard. Master of Ceremonies, DGE Jim Gascon, kept the program moving along, and before attendees knew what happened, the dis-trict gavel was being ex-changed between outgoing District Governor, Fred Cholet and incoming District Gover-nor, Paul Scott.

    Recognizing that “The Fu-ture of Rotary is in Your H a n d s ” w a s t h e t h e m e throughout the past Rotary year. The evening began with a celebration of all the ways clubs demonstrated their “Service Above Self” to ensure a healthy and stable Rotary throughout District 7150 and the world—right now and in the future. Nineteen clubs earned the Presidential Cita-tion award for 2009–2010: Adirondack Foothills, Bald-winsville, Camillus, Canastota, Cazenovia, Chittenango, De-Witt, Eastwood, Fayetteville-Manlius, Kuyahoora Valley, Little Falls, Moravia, Oriskany Falls, Oswego Sunrise, Rotary eClub NY1, Sauquoit, Syracuse Sunrise, Tully, and Tully In-teract.

    Six “Special Awards” were presented. Camden received one for the RI Significant Membership Award for bring-ing in two new female mem-bers under the age of 50. Chittenango received two awards: RI Best Cooperative Award for their Habit for Hu-manity project and Rotary Foundation 100% Vested Clubs. Others receiving the Rotary Foundation 100% Vested Club Award for having total club participation in the Sustaining Member Program were Liverpool and Oriskany Falls. Highest Growth Rate went to Oswego Sunrise and Most New Members went to

    New Hartford. The District 7150 Exemplary Service Award went to Cazenovia for their $17,000 playground project.

    Additional awards were presented to clubs throughout District 7150 for Innovation Award, Communicat ion/Public Image Award, Club Service Award, Community Service Award, International Service Award, and Vocational Award. After all the recogni-tions and the installation of our incoming District Gover-nor, Paul (PJ) Scott delivered his message to encourage Ro-tarians to continue the good works of Rotary as we embark

    on a new year and a new theme of “Building Communi-ties — Bridging Continents.” The future of Rotary continues to be each member’s responsi-bility in our local communities and worldwide. The bridges we build today will help make connections that will build world peace and understand-ing. The meeting adjourned promptly at 8:15 p.m.

    For consideration, Jim Austin needs to receive by September 1, 2010.Dollars available for Matching Grants internationally for our 2010-11 year will be $21.3 million.

    These dollars tend to be requested quickly. Contact Ward Vuillemot with your grant ideas to facilitate the proper way to submit and have your process run smoothly.

    Our submitted Annual Fund goals look great, with a 30% increase over our actual giving for our 2009-10 year. Our Annual Fund goals total over $81,000 with goals received from 43 of our clubs.

    As of July 1st Rotary shows o u r D i s t r i c t f i g u r e s a t $99,107.98. However, I received a call from the President of the Baldwinsville Club this past week saying that they were sending in their check for $1300.00 for Polio Plus bringing our totals to $100,407.98, the goal we were looking to reach.

    C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s t o everyone, especially to those clubs who helped make this a reality. Job well done and I’m proud of all of you.

    For the incoming Rotary year of 2010-2011, I would again ask of the clubs to keep polio high on your list of priorities. We need to help get the job done on polio. I will be more than happy to speak at your club or meet with your polio chairperson.

    THE 2010 / 2011 DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP GOAL IS TO HAVE A NET INCREASE OF 95 MEMBERS*

    *Allowing for Attrition we need almost 20 new per monthSUGGESTED APPROACH TO RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS

    1. Rotarians need to look for new prospects! Community and Business Leaders, Owners, Managers, Educators, Neighbors, who live or work in the Club Commu-nity. Consider, young, active retired individuals who may have more flexibility.

    2. Make Contact and invite them to lunch (Club should give one “free Lunch”. don’t ask them to join, until you get to know them. If you think they are a good candi-date, INVITE them back next week, and every week.

    3. Fill out a New Member Proposal Form (do not have them sign yet) Give to Club President or Secretary for Board Approval.

    4. Arrange a Rotary Information Meeting, with Rotarians and spend 30 - 40 min-utes. If they agree to join, then the Club Secretary will process the proposal - Send out a Publication and after seventh day, send Dues Notice.

    5. Plan a Format Induction. Invite Spouse or Guest. Present a New Member Folder (Suggest #C34102 from www.clubsupplies.com ) Invite A.G. - D.G.

    As we begin this new Rotary Year, I am excited to be the Chair of our District Member-ship Team. Recruiting and De-veloping New Rotarians is a Major Opportunity in District 7150.

    We have many Clubs who have Major Challenges, with declining Membership but we have many others who have increased this year and over the past few years.Our Plan is to ask clubs who have lost many Members in the past seven years to follow the

    suggested MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Plan, which follows this article. If your Club has been recruiting in a different way, and maintaining good numbers? Keep doing

    w h a t y o u ' v e b e e n d o i n g ! We will be c o n t a c t i n g s o m e C l u b s

    with 15 Members or less to share some recruit-ment methods that have helped others.

    This eight page Publication has all the Rotary Information that new or regular Members will enjoy reviewing and learn-ing.

    We hope that you will pub-licize your Goal for Club Mem-bership and make all aware of your progress or (decline) as the year progresses. Review, so you can encourage better re-sults.

    Rotary Fellowship & FunDISTRICT 7150CONFERENCE 2010 - 2011by... Stan Rubenstein, Conf. co-chairTime flies doesn't it. Here we are already in July which means we have about 10 months to go before the Spring Conference at the Hotel Hilton and Conference Center, Scran-ton, Pa.

    The Scranton exit #185 is only 2 hrs and 15 minutes from Syracuse. The Hotel is only a couple of blocks from the exit. Free parking is provided in the hotel garage next to the hotel.

    It is not too soon to fill out the District Registration form and send a $50.00 check made out to Eastwood Rotary Dis-

    trict Conference 2011 and send it to Dennis Shonewetter. Then start saving each week or month through your club or through the Conference with-drawal plan (see hotel registra-tion form). Both forms are available in this issue of the Credo or from the District Web site.

    The most important Con-vention is of course is Interna-tional, closely followed by Dis-trict Conference and District Assembly. If you have never been to any of these you should. The Rotary experience starts with them.

    The Hilton is a fine loca-tion for our District. The 2nd floor is where all of our confer-ence events will be held. Hotel

    rooms are equipped with ei-ther two double beds or a queen bed.

    Smoking and non smoking rooms are available. Also available are cots, cribs, and a vegetarian Saturday night din-ner if requested.

    Saturday afternoon is for your pleasure. Choose from Shopping, Electric City Trolley Station and Museum, Steam-town National Historic site, Lackawanna coal mine tour or if you feel lucky Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs for both rac-ing and casino action.

    The little project that could

    Books for the World Project on the moveby...PDG Ward T. Vuillemot

    BFTW is on the move and ex-panding. To date, the project’s club and organization partners have; located, sorted, boxed and shipped 95 pallets, or 2,280 cartons of children

    early-learner, k - 1 2 t e x t-b o o k s , a n d professional books. This a m o u n t s t o

    about 163,000 pounds of gen-tly used or new books. All of these are to be, or have been, distributed to schools, librar-ies, universities and nonprofit organization in the regions of southern Africa.

    Twenty pallets, made up of new early-learner materials, donated by Pro-Literacy, are on their way to Swaziland schools.

    District 7150 contributors of books include 38 clubs and a number of other community organizations and churches.

    This exceptional success is attributed to the many D7150 Rotarians, club and friends that have contributed so much of their time, talent and treas-ure. Truly, a team effort.

    After 18 months of success, the project is currently expand-ing into two adjacent districts; D7120 to our west and D7170 to our south. D7190, to our east, is in the process of explor-ing it. As a result of this ex-pansion, the project has been renamed to: CNY Book for the World, which is one of the many other USA Rotary BFTW partners with Houston, TX Rotarians in book distribu-tion in third world countries.

    AREA 2 CLUBS CONSISTED OF UTICA, NEW HARTFORD, GUS, NORTH UTICA/WHITESTOWN, ROME. SAUQUOIT AND THE E-CLUB. WE HAVE COMPLETED A SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF COOPERATION WITHIN OUR AREA AND DISTRICT.

    OUR PRIMARY GOAL WAS TO WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM ON AGREED UPON EVENTS/PROJECTS. WE MET MONTHLY FOR BREAKFAST-7:30 ENDING NO LATER THAN 8:30.THIS TIME WAS USED TO DISCUSS CLUB EVENTS, REVIEW THE REQUIREMENTS OF OUR DISTRICT AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE IN CLUBS EVENTS.
