1.0 Chairman’s CommentsTheapostlePaulwasamanofimmensecapabilityandextraordinaryfaith.ManyhavebeenchallengedandencouragedbymuchofwhathepennedunderthedirectionoftheHolySpirit.Muchofhisworkwascarriedoutunderdifficultcircumstances–namelyprison,shipwreckandhostilemobsintentonsilencinghisGospelwork.AswereflectedonhisministrywerealisedthattheworkofChristianeducationin2014retainsthesamesenseofchallengeandthesamegreatneedforfaithinouramazingLordandSaviour.

Asaresult,2014wasappropriatelythemedtheYearofFaithastheplanofhavingtwoChristianCollegesrunning inparallelon thesame138acrepropertybecamea reality. The challenge of planning and building Stage One of the brand newRivercrestcampusandtohaveitreadytoopenitsdoorsonDayOneofthe2014schoolyearprovidedmanyopportunitiesforprayerandcelebration.Thepioneeringeffortsofmany,notablyDrDanielPampuch,MrGregWaterhouseandDrMichelleCafini,wereinstrumentalingettingthevisionfromanarchitect’sdesignboardtorealbuildingsdesignedtoprovidehighqualityPYPeducation.AsChairmanoftheBoardIamimmenselyproudoftheeffortsofthewholeteamatRivercrest,manyofwhomrelocatedfromHillcresttoensurethatthecoreChristianfaithandculturaldepthofHillcrestwouldhelptosetRivercrestsurelyonitsfoundations.

Meanwhile, whilst Rivercrest was getting up and running on its green field site,HillcrestwascontinuingtobuilditscapacitywiththecompletionofamagnificentnewFoodtechnologycentre,whosegrandopeningwasoneofthespecialhighlightsoftheyear.Inaddition,thecompletionofthenewSeniorSchooladministrationwingprovidedawonderfulnewspaceforstafftocollaborateinfacultiesaswellasfreeupexistingfacilitiesforYear12CommonRoomspaceandtoreclaimsomemuchneededclassroomsforlearningandteaching.

MuchworkwasaccomplishedinbothHillcrestandRivercresttodevelopcurriculumunitsandtodiscusswhatteachingfromadistinctlyChristianperspectivelookslike.Given that theVisionstatementofCrest focusesonprovidinga ‘qualityChristianeducation,ensuringthattheGospelisanintegralpartofallwedo’itisvitalthatwecontinuetolabourtocreatealearningenvironmentwhichisinfusedwiththeGoodNewsofJesus,ratherthanhavingHimjustasicingonthecake.

2014wasalsoasignificantyearinthattheincumbentBusinessManager,MrGregWaterhouse, finished up early in the year, to be replaced by his successor, MrDionHarvey,whocametotherolewithyearsofEducationalBusinessexperienceelsewhere.Providentially,DionwasanewparentofRivercrestbeforetakingonthisappointmentsohehadalreadyshownhiscommitmenttotheCrestcommunity.Inaddition to Greg’s departure, Dr Daniel Pampuch, our Executive Principal, gavenoticeinmidJulythathewasplanningtofinishupattheendoftheschoolyear.Afteralmost10yearsof faithfulservice,Danielwasconvincedthat itwas timetoheadbacktoQueensland–tofamilyandnewstudiesinLaw.OnbehalfoftheBoard,IwouldliketothankGregandDanielfortheiryearsofservicetotheCrestcommunityandforthewonderfullegacybothmenhaveleft.

TomycolleaguesontheBoard,Iwouldliketoonceagainextendmythankstoyouforyourtirelesseffortsamidstsomechallengingcircumstancesthroughouttheyear.WeshallcontinuetolabourtogethertogovernCrestwithallduecareanddiligencethattheLordJesusmaybepraisedandhonouredinallthatwedo.

TheHillcrestthemefor2014wasFaith,usingasafocustheversefromHebrews11:1,“Nowfaithisbeingsureofwhatwehopeforandcertainofwhatwedonotsee.”Theimportanceandcentralityof this truthwasevident in the livesofmanyindividual students, parents and staff members as well astheoverallHillcrest community.AsaChristianCollegewithapassionforseeingthreedimensionalgrowthinthelivesofitsmembers,thefaiththemeresonateddeeplyinallthatwedid.WecovereddifferentfacetsoffaithinourstaffbriefingsonMondaymornings.WetransitionedfromafocusonsomefoundationalbiblicalversesonfaithinTermOnetomoreofafocusonapologeticsinTermTwo.Thesecondhalfoftheyearsawusexaminingsomerealchallenges to faith– fromourownwaywardheartsto issuesofpersecutionandsuffering.Wethenfinishedtheyearwithanexplorationof theclassicduo–faithandworks–andappliedtheseparallel truthstoourlives.Weweregreatlyblessedthroughouttheyearwiththevisitsof many church ministers and pastors who shared on aWednesdaymorningwithstaffandatSeniorSchoolChapels,again using the theme of faith as a launching pad. It iswonderfulforourstudentstoheararangeofspeakersfrommanyandvariouschurches,allspeakingwithoneaccordonthecentralityofwhatsavingfaithinJesusactuallylookslikeinourlives.

2.2 Staff TherewasagreatstabilitytothestaffingatHillcrestin2014.Thisspeaksofamaturingculturewherestafffeelvaluedandknowthat theyarecontributingpositively to thecultureandprogramsoftheCollege.Alotofworkwasdonethroughoutthe year improving pedagogy, with an ongoing focus onformative assessment, using the literature of researcherDylanWiliam as a reference tool. The long term aim is tocreate a distinctly 21st century learning environment forstudentswhichisengaging,collaborative,differentiatedandutilisesICTasaninterfacetoallowgreaterlevelsofresearchandenquiry.Thisisaworkinprogressandwillbeforsomeyearstocome.

OnbehalfoftheHillcreststaff,IwouldliketopersonallythankDrDanielPampuchwholedtheCollegesocapablyforclosetoadecade, forhisoutstandingserviceandcontribution tothe growth and development ofHillcrest.Hillcrestwas in agood position at the end of 2014 with a strong leadershipteammouldedandshaped inpartbyDaniel’sexampleandmentoring.

2.3 StudentsThegrowthofSeniorSchoolcontinuedin2014withtheYear11groupblossomingtofiveclasses.Afarcryfromtheearly2000swhentherewouldbeoneclassofYear11swithatotalof25-30students.AstheSeniorSchoolhasreallygrownincapacityandorderoverthelasttwoyears,undertheexcellentleadership of Mr Michael Swanborough, there has been astabilisingofstudentnumbersandanongoingrefinementofsubjectofferings,curriculumdocumentationandstreamlinedprocesses.

The VCEResults for the year were very encouragingwiththeDuxbeingJaiCarmichael,whoseATARof98.25wasanexceptionalresult.Therewere7morestudentswhoachievedabove90andthen11morestudentswhoseATARscorewasabove80.WearepleasedwiththeachievementsofthesetopstudentsandyetwantingtoseeageneralliftinsomeofthelowertomiddlebracketsofstudentssothatthewholecohortofYear 12s is carried alongwith the overall improvementsseeninSeniorSchool.

The development of student leaders (individual students)and student leadership (the general encouragement to thewholestudentbodytotakeonleadershipqualities)hasbeena notable feature over the last few years across all threesectionsoftheCollege.Thementoringwhichisoccurringfromstudenttostudentaswellasspecificallytargetedleadershipprograms isbearing fruitwithagreaternumberofstudentswillinglysteppinguptoassumepositionsofresponsibility.

TheinauguralStudentSpiritualLifeSurveywasadministeredtoallYear7to12studentstowardstheendofTerm1.Thedevelopmentofthissurveywasmanyweeksinthemaking,with the question uppermost in ourminds as towhere thestudentsareat intermsofengagementwithChristianfaith.WeunderstandthatanopenenrolmentChristianschoolwillhavestudentswithadiversityofbackgroundsandsotheidea

wastogetayearlevelbyyearlevelpictureofthespirituallandscape of our Hillcrest students. Much rich data wasgleanedfromtheanalysisofaround500respondents.Theplanistoadministerthissamesurveyannually,foranumberof years, to track the spiritual formation of each cohortand toascertainwhetherchanges toourChristianStudiescurriculum,andotherelementsofourprogram,willhelpthemtomore thoroughly interact with and own theGoodNewsforthemselves.WearealsointerestedtoseethelongtermimpactoftheincorporationofagreaterChristianperspectiveinallsubjectsandagreaterwillingnesstogenuinelyengagewiththethinkingandopinionsofourstudents.

2.4 Major EventsWheneverMrsKirstyGraham,ourJuniorSchoolMusicCo-ordinator,setshermindtoatask,youknowthattheresultwillbeoutstanding.Theproductionofthemusical‘Porridge’wasnoexception.The theatricaldesign,costuming,musicand acting from the Junior School students created anexceptional showcase of young talent. Many thanks tothemanystaffandparenthelperswhomade thissuchanextraordinarysuccess.

Mr Simon Taylor led the charge with the VEX Roboticsgroup, a co-curricular program involving a number ofHillcreststudents fromvariousyear levels.Due toSimon’senthusiasm and band of supporters, the National VEXChampionships were held in the Performing Arts Theatreamidst great enthusiasm from participants, spectators andjudgesalike.

YABBA–anannualYoungPeople’sBookAwardsceremony– is quite a prestigious event and to be able to host it atHillcrestwascertainlyahighlightfortheCollegeingeneraland for theDiscoveryCentre staff in particular.The eventwaswellattendedbystudentsfromfarandwide,withmorethan20well knownAustralian children’s authorsattendingtheceremony.

The inaugural Parents and Friends’ Family Market Nightwasheld inMarchwitharound70stallholders, foodvans,musiciansandhundredsofpeoplewhoenjoyedafabulousfunevent.Thesuccessof thenight canbeattributed toasmallbutverydedicatedbandofvolunteersfromtheHillcrestPFAwhowere delightedwith the positive response to theevening.

2.5 DevelopmentsThe opening of the Food Technology Centre and SeniorSchoolAdministrationcomplexhavereallymadeasignificantstatementinthissectionoftheCollege.Theofficialopeningof the Food Centre was a key highlight in the Collegecalendar, with outstanding catering by staff and students,a qualitymusical itemby the choir and the attendance bya number of dignitaries.The new industrial quality kitchenwillprovideopportunitiesforgrowthofthisimportantsubjectareawellintothefuture.

Wehavemadeadeliberatepushtoimprovetheadministrativecapacity and functionality of the senior endof theCollegeandtheextracollaborativespacesinthenewAdminbuilding,coupledwiththefreeingupofteachingandlearningspaces–includingthetransformationoftheoldFoodRoomintoanextraSciencelaboratory–hasbeenawelcomechange.

Duringthesecondhalfof2014,theHillcrestExecutiveteamworkedonaWholeSchoolImprovementplan.ThepurposewastocreateclarityaroundkeyareasoftheCollegewhichcouldbefurtherdevelopedoverthenextonetotwoyears.Thisincorporateseightkeypointscoveringfaith,communityandlearningareas,willactasatransitiondocumentasweheadtowardsournextStrategicPlan.

2.6 Service & MissionTheinauguralService/MissiontriptoEastTimortookplaceinJuly.Afterasuccessfulreconnaissancetripin2013,itwasdecidedthatitwouldbesuitabletotakeasmallgroupofVCEstudents toengage themwith thisdevelopingcountry rightonourdoorstep.Thestudentsstruggledwiththepovertyattimesandevenmoresowith thereversecultureshockontheirreturnbutoverallthefeedbackwasoutstanding.

I trust thatgivingourseniorstudentsopportunities tohavetheirmindsandheartsstretchedwillbearfruitthroughouttherestoftheirlives.PartlyasaresultofthesuccessoftheYear10CambodiatripandVCEtriptoEastTimor,therearenowplansforatriptooutbackAustraliaforourYear9students,startingassoonasApril2016.WearestillarranginglogisticswithRevBillMorrison(anex-HillcrestBoardmember)whois supporting two indigenous churches in Kalkaringi andLajamanu.ItwillbeabrillianttripintoaverydifferentsideofAustraliaforsomeofourYear9cohort.

ServiceandMissiondonothavetobegrandandexpensive.ManywerereallytouchedwhenagroupofYear4studentsdecided on their own volition to run a series of lunchtimemarket stalls where funds would go to support others inneed.Thiswas truly a significant sign that looking out forothersdoesnothaveaspecificagebracketattachedtoit.

2.7 Strategic GrowthIn our efforts to expand the use of mobile devices at theCollege, 2014 saw the introduction of Surface Tablets toYear 9 and 10 students and planning was undertaken forthe implementationofsimilardevices in theMiddleSchoolatYear7and8level in2015.Inaworldwheretechnologyisubiquitous,itbehovesustoprovideasafeandstructuredenvironment for the students to learn effective skills andgoodstewardshipoftheirdevices.

Under the excellent leadership of Mrs Maria Varlet, ourHeadofLearningandTeaching,wehaveseen the furtherdevelopment of Faculty teams who collaborate togetheracross sections of the College to promote whole schoolcurriculumdevelopmentandthinking.

2.8 SummaryAsusual,2014hasbeenactionpacked,fulloflifeandfaith.I am so thankful to the Lord forHis hand of blessing andprotection uponHillcrest aswe have sought to serveHiminallourimperfectendeavours.Hillcrestisblessedwithanexcellentandhighlycommittedstaffteam,ledbyverycapableHeadsofSchoolandHeadofLearningandTeaching.Ilookforwardto2015,workinginanewroleasExecutivePrincipalandwithMrGreggWeaverappointedas thenewHeadofCollege.Wewillgreatlyvalueyourprayers.

I was appointed to the role of Head of Junior School atHillcrest as the advent of Crest Education and RivercrestChristianCollegebroughtchanges tostaffing in theJuniorSchool. Dr Michelle Cafini took on the role of Head ofCollegeatRivercrest anda number of JuniorSchool staffmemberswenttocontributetothisnewendeavor.

WewelcomedMrsMarissaWattsastheDirectoroftheELC,ELCteachersMrsKathrynVanandMrDavidPodhaczkyandELCAssistantsMrs KellyArnold, MrsMonica Lopez, MrsLauraMaka,Mrs Vera Taweel, MissAmelia Swanton andMrsAnnaIndeswari.WewelcomedMissHeatherMaslenasYear1 teacherandEnglishFacultyCoordinator,MrDanielCatrintaasYear3teacherandMissLisa-MarieSchneehagetotheGermanteachingteam.MrsCaronLaneandMrWesGrainger moved from Middle School to Prep and Year 4respectively.

Mrs Kintara Monk returned from maternity leave for onedayperweekandMrsCandaceMiddleditchandMrsTrishDuran shared their time between Rivercest and HillcrestChristianColleges. Junior School LearningAssistantsMrsChrisVanDiepen,MrsKimberlyHeadandMrMarkMaloneytransitionedintotheroleofPrepAidefor3daysperweek.

WewelcomedMrs Renee Presta as a LearningAssistantworking across Years 1-4 and Mrs Jacqui Munro wasappointed as the new Learning Support Coordinator inSemesterTwo.MissLisaHoldsworthwasappointedtotheroleofCoordinatorforYears1-2,joiningMrsJoannaWiggsasPrepCoordinatorandMrsBernadineMaloneyasYears3-4Coordinator.

I would like to acknowledge the excellence and passionof the Junior School staff in providing for the academic,personalandspiritualneedsof thewiderangeofstudentsintheircare.Theybringcommitment,expertise,talentandcreativitytotheirworkwithchildrenandfamiliesoftheJuniorSchool.IthankGodforsuchanoutstandingteam.

3.3 CurriculumStaff continued to refine their knowledge and skill inimplementingAustralian Curriculum English, Mathematics,Science,andHumanities.TheuseoftheAustralianCurriculumAchievement Standards in written reports was developed.Australian Curriculum Health and Physical Education wasadoptedoncefinalized.TheLearningContinuaforPersonaland Social Learning and ICT Capabilities were used toinform planning for these General Capabilities across thecurriculumandforreportingtoparents.

3.4 Professional DevelopmentStaffparticipatedinawholeschoolprofessionaldevelopmentfocus on Formative Assessment involving professionalreading, workshop participation, peer observation and peerfeedback. The following aspects of FormativeAssessment

Peerobservationand feedbackallowedstaff to trialspecificstrategies while being observed by a colleague. Thisobservation formed the basis for constructive feedback intermsofwhatwasobservedandhowthismightmovepracticeforward.Thisprocesshasenabledustoactivatethelearningpotential of the expertise we have on staff. It has broughtprofessional learning into every day practice and createdsupportive,collaborativerelationshipsbetweenstaff.

In addition, professional development has focused onstrategiestoaddressliteracydeficitswithintheclassroomandon Early Childhood pedagogies which promote literacy andnumeracywithinthePreptoYear2context.

3.5 Providing for DifferencesStaff continued theworkof collectingandusing informationon student achievement to inform planning and teachingdecisions. Evidence of student achievement during and atthe conclusion of the learning process was gathered usingformativeassessmentstrategies,standardizedtests,unitpreandpost tests and samples of studentwork.This evidencewasusedtoidentifywherestudentsplacedalongthelearningcontinuum. Year level teams then worked in to plan andprovideexperienceswhichwouldmoveall students forwardandmaximizeachievement.

3.6 Learning SupportA change in name from Curriculum Support to LearningSupportreflectedthetransitionofstaff,studentsandparentsfrom a withdrawal focused model of learning support to awell-researched model of teacher support. The LearningSupport team provide support and expertise to ensure thatstudentswithlearningdifficultiesareabletomoveforwardin

theirlearningwithinthecontextofthetheclassroomteacheroverseeingthelearningneedsofallstudents.Wehaveworkedontheongoinggoalofensuringthenecessarystructuresandsupportsareinplacetoenableteacherstoeffectivelymeettheneedsofeverystudent.YearlevelCoordinatorshavetakentheleadintheprocessofcommunicatingwithotherprofessionals(Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, EducationalPsychologistsandPediatricians),parentsandclassteacherstosupport the learningofstudentswithadditionalneeds. AgroupoftrainedparentReinforcedReadingTutorscontributedto literacysupportacross theschoolby readingone-on-oneregularlywithstudents.

3.7 Excursions & IncursionsVenuesidentifiedlastyearassupportingAustralianCurriculumScience and Humanities were linked in more sophisticatedwaystolearningwithintheclassroom.PrepvisitedHealesvilleSanctuary tosupportScience learningon the linksbetweenanimal characteristics and their habitats. Year 1 went toCoalCreektoexploretheHistoryconceptsofcontinuityandchange throughexaminationof family andschool life in thepast.Year2visitedlocalsites,includingWilsonsPark,theOldCheeseFactoryandEdwinFlackReservetoexplorereasonsforchangeinthelocalarea.

Year 3 experienced space through theStarlabPlanetarium.Theyexplorednightandday,themeasurementoftimeandtheaxisoftheEarth.Year4investigatedthepropertyofmaterialsat Scienceworks. Captain Supercents from the StartSmartprogramvisitedtoteachfinancialliteracyskillstostudentsinYearsOneandTwo.PrepandYear1studentshadsessionswithaTrafficSafetyEducationfromRACVcoveringpassengerandpedestriansafety. JuniorSchoolCaptainsandViceCaptainsattendedaPrimarySchool leadership conference run by GRIP Leadership andconnected with Middle and Senior School student leadersacrosstheCollege.HouseCaptainscontributedtotheeffectiveuseofplaygroundequipment.ChoirandStringsCaptainsledin weekly rehearsals and undertook public speaking roles atperformances.StudentleadersmeteachFridaywiththeJuniorSchool Chaplain, Rowan Hendrickse, for ongoing leadershipdevelopmentandsupport.Inadditiontothestudentsappointedto specific leadership roles, all Year 4 students undertookleadership training as part of their participation in the BetterBuddiesprogram.

3.9 Pastoral/Spiritual/MissionTheJuniorSchoolChaplain,Mr.RowanHendrickseconductedcombinedyearleveldevotionsonaregularbasis.Herefinedthe‘YoungLions’supportprogramforstudentsneedingpersonalorsocial supportandcontinued toprovidesupport to individualsandfamiliesexperiencinglossorfamilybreakdown.

FortnightlyChapelserviceswereconducted forPrep -Year2andYear3-4students.Eachclasshadanopportunitytodeliverthemessage.TherewereregularcontributionsfromtheJuniorSchoolChaplain and guest appearances fromMr.Grace andDrPampuch.

FundraisingfocusedonsupportforAishaandCharity,ourtwosponsor children at Canon Andrea Mwaka School (CAMS)inTanzania. Ourmajor fundraiserwas the sale of ‘SalvationBracelets’. This simple bracelet of coloured beads whichillustrateapartof theGospelmessage,weresoldat theendofTerm4aspartofourChristmascelebrations.JuniorSchoolrana ‘40minutefamine’over lunchtosupport theMiddleandSeniorSchoolstudentsparticipatingintheWorldVision40HourFamine.

OperationWorldwasan initiative to celebrate thediversity offamilybackgroundsandnationalitieswithinJuniorSchool.Eachweekclassesprayedforafocuscountry,givingthankstoGodforHisblessingsandaskingHimhelppeoplewhoareservingHimthere.

3.10 KidsMatterHillcrest hosted a regional network meeting for KidsMatterin Term 3 and staff completed Professional Development forComponents Two and Three of KidsMatter. An audit of thecurrent Social and Emotional Learning was conducted and anew program, ‘Bounce Back’ chosen for implementation nextyear.Theresourcesneededtoimplement‘BounceBack’havebeen purchased ready for the beginning of 2015. Multi-ageclubs ran for students from Years 2-4 during Term 3. Theseactivities provided opportunity to pursue interests such assinging,dancing,robotics,origamiandgardeningandalsobuiltcommunitywhile providing the context for practicing personalandsocialskills.

3.11 Child Safety Day October 31stThe inaugural Child Safety Day was held in conjunction withMiddleSchool onOctober 31st to linkwithDanielMorcombeday. TwoHillcrest parents,BetinaUsatov andToninaHarris,clearly the shared safety message of ‘Recognise, React andReport’withstudents.Thisdaysisdesignedtofosterprotection,safetyandopportunityforchildrensotheycanbeprepared,notscared.ItalsoprovidedanopportunitytoconversewithJuniorSchoolfamiliesaboutchildsafety.

3.12 Better BuddiesPrepandYear4studentsparticipatedinBetterBuddies,whichisan initiativeof theAlannahandMadelineFoundation. Theprogram provided training for Year 4 students and structuredfortnightly buddy sessions linking them with the Preps. ThisprovidedleadershipskillsfortheYear4studentsandincreasedsupport at school for the Preps. The Junior School alsoreceivedaFriendshipSeatthroughBetterBuddyProgram.Theseatispositionednearthebasketballcourt.Studentswhofindthemselveswith noone toplaywith at break times can seeksupportfromothersbysittingontheFriendshipSeat.Thishelpsallchildrenfeelincluded.

3.13 EventsA wide range of community, sporting and musical activitieswere available to cater for families and studentswith diverseinterests and abilities. A range of events involved parents,siblingsandextendedfamilymemberstobuildcommunity.The‘PrepIcebreaker’wasanopportunityfornewfamiliestobecomeacquainted.HarmonyDaycoincidedwiththePFAMarketNightandchildrenpresentedresearchabout(andlaterate)foodfromdifferentcountries.FamilyMathematicsAfternoonexploredtheuseofconcretematerials in thedevelopmentofMathematicalconcepts and understanding. VIP Day saw grandparents,parents,familymembersand/orfriendsvisitclassroomsandtheDiscoveryCentre tocelebrateNationalFamilyReadingMonthandshareinchildren’slearning.BookParadesfromELCtoYear4celebratedthefunandglamourofliterature.

All students participated in House Carnivals for Swimming,Athletics and Cross Country. Selected students fromYears 3and4representedtheCollegeintheChristianSchoolSportingNetworkandSportSchoolVictoriaarenas.Swimming lessonswereheldforstudentsfromYears1-4andPElessonsincludeddanceinstructionandgymnastics.

TheELC toYear 1 concert celebrated ‘PeoplewhoHelpUs”withsongsabouthairdressers,firefighters,windowcleanersandteachersamongothers.ThestudentsinYears2-4produceda spectacular performance of the musical comedy ‘Porridge”feature ‘Mother Goose” characters. The Year 1 choir, theMelodicMinors,participated inachoral festivalatBeaconhillsCollege at which they were the youngest performers. TheJuniorSchool choirwere awarded first place at the LaTrobeValleyEisteddfod for theirperformanceof ‘MonkeyandTurtle’and‘WhyweSing’.TheinstrumentalstringsprogramforYear2 provided instrumental music experience and performanceopportunities.

The program identified students interested in pursuingprivate lessons. The Junior School String Ensembleprovided opportunities for these students to be part of groupperformances. Opportunities for students undertaking privateinstrumental lessonswerefurnishedatChapelserviceswheretheyperformedsolos.TheeventscheduleculminatedwiththeChristmasGalawherePrepsperformedaChristmasPageantsupportedbythe instrumentalandchoralgroupsof theJuniorSchoolinacelebrationofthebirthofJesus.IwouldliketothankGodfortheopportunityHillcrestChristianCollege provides to support, educate and serve children andfamilies.

4.0 Hillcrest Middle School ReviewWehavejourneyedtogetherthroughoutayearof‘Faith’,walking in faith towards achieving the goalswe set for2014, and most importantly for stronger faith in ourGodandHispromises.Highly interestedingrowingourconnectedness, we continued to invite parents to playan active role in their child’s education so that we cantogethercelebratetheirachievementsandsuccess.

Eighty-sixnewstudents,twonewteachersandtwonewChaplains joined theMiddleSchool in2014andanewleadership role was created for a Year 5 Coordinatorwhich was filled internally. Bringing lots of enthusiasm,commitment and talents, the Middle School staffcontinued the race that God has called them for in aMiddleSchoolwhich is like a ‘transition hub’ for youngadolescents.Therefore,ensuringtheirsmoothtransitionhasalwaysbeenoneofourtoppriorities,whichgosidebysideandintertwinewithouracademicgoals.2014hasseen some significant development to support studentpersonal, social and spiritual growth, in addition to thewonderful academic development that has taken placeoverthecourseoftheyear.

4.1 Events TheMiddle School experience has been enrichedwithsomanyeventsandhands-onactivities thatarepartofthe academic curriculum.Students have participated inexcursions, incursions and/or competitions as part oftheirstudyunits forCoresubjects.Somesubjectswereintegratedundertheoneexcursion,suchastheYear7&8Humanities/LOTEexcursion to theCity.Parallel to that,wealwaysplacehighemphasisonthedevelopmentofthewholeperson,asweunderstandhowcriticalthemiddleyearsofschoolingstageisinachild’sdevelopment.Thishas also been reflected in our events, excursions andincursions.

ItisourstrategytoconducttheMiddleSchoolCampsinTermOne inorder to facilitateopportunities forbondingand building relationships within the year level studentcohort and with their teachers. I had the privilege

of visiting a couple of camps where I observed theopportunitiesofferedoncampaswellasstaffdedicationtowardsmakingitamemorableexperienceforeachandevery individualstudent.Reports thatwehavereceivedfrom students and parents have all been positive andencouraging.Campsarelinked,eithertothecurriculumortobuildingresiliencyanddevelopingrelationships.TheYear5scampedatSovereignHilltosupporttheirlearningofEarlySettlementandtheGoldRush;theYear6swentto Phillip Island for their adventure camp; TheYear 7sexploredCanberra,ournationalcapitalcity;andtheYear8senjoyedwhatWilsonsPromontoryhadtoofferthroughtheirwildernesscamp.

TheCFA’svisittoHillcrestinformedtheYear5-6studentsabouthowbushfiresstart,whatthefirefightersgearandtools are for and provided students with strategies forprotectingthemselves,petsandhousesfromfires.Theseare life skills that all young students should acquire sothat they can make good decisions when facing suchdangerorhavingtomakeadecisionforothers.

As part of our intentions to support the parent body,the Learning Support team provided workshops onTransitioningtoSecondarySchooling.Parentsengagedin constructive discussions around different strategiesfor supporting their children with additional needs. Thenecessary skills that students need support in wereexplained to parents, particularly those that will assiststudentsastheyprepareforchangesintheirhomeworkand study routines, organisational demands, andadolescentdevelopment.We look forward to increasingsuchopportunitiesinthefuture.

‘AWalk in thePast’wasasuccessfulHistorynight, ledbytheHistoryFacultysupportedbyotherstaff.Itbroughtthe Middle school community together to explore whatstudentslearntinHistory.Staffandvolunteeringstudentshave certainly presented passion and creativity to therest of the College community, creating a wonderfulatmosphereforallofthosewhoattended.

4.2 Academic AchievementsStaff continued to engage in collegial discussions thatfocussedonformative,ongoingassessmenttoinformtheteachingandlearningprocess.Thismeansthatteachersare regularly collecting data about student learning andperformance to inform their teaching practices and howtheycancater for thedifferentneedsofeachandeverystudentintheirclass.Teachershavealsoengagedinself-reflections,peerobservationsandconversationsregardingtheir teaching practice and pedagogy, received anddeliveredfeedbacktooneanotherthatwouldmovethemforward in their profession.This indeedwill have a longlasting impact on teaching and learning for all studentsinour care. Staff collegialityand intentional interactionsandpracticeswillhaveagreatpositiveimpactonstudentachievements,atan individualaswellascohort level, inadditiontotheirongoingrefinementofourcurriculum.

One of the highlights is the structured and informedStudent-LedConferenceapproach,wherestudentshavebeengiventheopportunitytotakeownershipoftheirownlearning,reflectingontheirperformanceandpresentingtotheirparentsand teachers their learning journeyand theprogress they have made throughout the first semesterof the school year. Using a digital portfolio, they sharedself-reflections on their performance, samples of workandthepersonallearninggoalsthattheyhavesetfortheremainderoftheyear,inpreparationforthefollowingyearaswell.Theirgoalswerealsobasedonthefeedbacktheyhavereceivedfromtheirpeersandteachers.

Feedbackonthisapproachwassoughtthroughsurveyingparents,studentsandstaffandthecollecteddatawillleadtoimprovementintheproceduresandprocessesthatwehaveestablished.

4.2.1 Competitions The Middle School program continued to offer studentsopportunitiestopartakeindifferentcompetitions,includingacademicandco-curricularareas.Someoftheacademiccompetitions, such as ICAS international competitions,Mathletics, German Poetry, Inter-School Debating, andThePremier’sReadingChallengehavebeen conductedonanannualbasis.Inaddition,ourstudentsengagedinHouse sporting carnivals as well as in interschool sportcompetitions,performingreallywellinanumberofeventsandrepresentingtheCollegewithhighstandardsandstyle. TheMiddleSchoolChoirparticipatedintheEisteddfodbytheBaycompetitionwhichwasheldat theKingstonCityHallandperformedextremelywell,where theyachievedanHonourableMention.

Onceagain,HillcrestwasrepresentedandmadeproudattheAGTVGermanPoetry competition.MariamMalak ofYear 7won second prize across Victoria and should becongratulatedforheroutstandingachievement.

TheYear 7&8Debating teamcame1st in theOctober’sCSSNDebating finals. Two teamsparticipated in thesecompetitions and both teams won – leading us to take

hometheshieldforHillcrest.

The International Competitions and Assessments forSchools (ICAS) – UNSW Global, have always been animportantopportunityforourhighlyperformingstudentstocompeteintheirareaofstrength,ataninternationallevel.Some of our students have taken part in ICAS tests forEnglish and Computer Skills. Results achieved rangedfromParticipation toDistinction, andweareproudof alltheparticipants’effortsandresultsasshownin thetablebelow.

4.4 ProgramsStudent Leadership:TheMiddleschooltakesthedevelopmentof leadership skills and facilitating leadership opportunitiesseriously.StudentLeadershavehadopportunitiestoconnectwith the external community through the GRIP LeadershipConference, the City of Casey Mayoral Reception forYoungLeaders,CHIPSLeadersBreakfast,ANZACService/march and theWorld Vision Leaders’ Conference. RunningAssembliesandChapelService,introducingGuestSpeakersand helping out on College events (such as Open Daysand hosting other schools) have been some of the serviceopportunities thatwereoffered tostudent leaders.This is inadditiontotheStudentLeadershipdevelopmentprogramthatisonoffer todevelop leaderswithin theMiddleSchool.WevalueallthattheStudentLeadersdoandalwayslookforwardto celebrating our future leaders, as they journey throughSeniorSchoolandintowidersociety.

Mentoring through Better Buddies: The establishment ofRivercrestChristianCollegehasprovidedour studentswithadditional opportunities formission and service. The BetterBuddies program has facilitated for building connectionsbetween the sister Colleges, Hillcrest and Rivercrest.This Framework, provided by the Alannah and MadelineFoundation, is designed as a key prevention program toreduce bullying and develop a friendly and caring schoolcommunity.

TheYear6studentshavebuddiedupwithaPreporYear1student from Rivercrest and have had fortnightly sessions,which consisted of activities focusing on the values ofcaring for others, friendliness, respect, valuing difference,includingothers,andresponsibility.Studentshaveundergonespecifictrainingtodevelopeffective leadershipskillsandanunderstandingofhowtobeagoodbuddy,settingapositiveexampletotheyoungerstudents. Asanintegralpartof theprogram,theYear6studentshaveprovidedassistanceintheclassroomandparticipatedinkeyeventstoextendthevaluesthroughout the school community, such as, the BuddiesWelcome session and Better BuddiesGames. The positiverapport seenamongst thestudentsand thedevelopmentofimportantvalueshasbeenrewardingforallinvolved.

Mentoring through Agriculture/Horticulture: As part ofdeveloping connections across the College, theYear 7Ag/HortstudentshavehostedthePrepclassesforanumberofsessionstointroducethemtofriendlyanimalsintheAg/Hortdepartment.ItiswonderfultoseestudenttransitionbetweenJuniorandMiddleSchoolscommenceatsuchanearlystageinaHillcrest’sstudentlife,inadditiontowhatwedotoassistintheirtransitionfromYear4to5.

Resiliency- Friendship, Bounce back & Body Image Days: TheYear7and8studentsdedicatedawholedayinhonouroftheirfriends,wherethebondoffriendshipandcollaborationamong students was celebrated. The day included guestspeakers and workshops highlighting the message thatfriendshipisaplacewheredreamsarenurtured,sharedandcelebrated,aplacewherehappinessbegins.Theyexploredmaking wise friendship decisions, being empathetic anddealingwithemotions.Thedayaimedatenhancingstudentunderstanding of how important friends are to us and atequipping students with effective strategies that assist indevelopingandmaintainingfriendships.

Similarly, another day focussed on Body Image and PeerPressure and on building strategies that assist in bouncingback after been through somedifficulties and challenges inlife.Suchprogramsarecrucialforstudentphysicalandmentalhealth, personal and social development, particularly whendeliveredinawaythatistailoredandcatersforthedifferencesingenderneeds. Another highlight of 2014 has been the ‘Child Safety Day’initiative.Theveryspecial thingaboutthisday isthat itwasinitiated,plannedandrunbyparentswhoareverypassionateabout educating children about recognising and respondingto any risks that theymayencounter in life.Wehavebeenblessedtohaveveryskilledandpassionateparentswhohavecontributedwith their timeandskills tomake this firstChildSafetyDayasuccess.

4.5 Value Added - Mission & Service2014hasbeenayearofrefinementinanumberofareasatMiddleSchool.Tothisend,wehaveconductedafewsurveysto capture students, staff and parents’ feedback on someprogramsandoperationalmatters.Data from thosesurveyswill informour futureplanning.Oneof thesurveysaimedatpavingthewayforlaunching‘MindMatters’inthesecondhalfof2015. MindMatters isa framework thatassists in raisingacommunityawarenessandunderstandingofmentalhealthand in developing a supportive environment for everyone.ThisbuildsonthewonderfulworkthathasbeendonethroughKidsMatteratJuniorSchool.

5.0 Hillcrest Senior School Review2014wastheYearofFaithandascanbeseenfromthevariety of events and highlights across Senior Schoolthroughout the year, there was significant engagementin both academic, cultural and extra-curricular pursuits.OngoinggrowthinSeniorSchool,coupledwithadedicatedteam of staff ensured that students were providedwithmanyopportunitiestodotheirbestinallendeavours.

At the end of the year we farewelled Mr CampbellRushton-Smith after 14 years of service in the SeniorSchool. Mr Rushton-Smith has made a significantcontribution to theSeniorSchool and particularly in hisroleasVCECoordinator.Hehasbeeninstrumentalinthedevelopment of the VCE programs on offer at Hillcrestand his commitment to the College has been greatlyappreciated.Wewish himGod’s blessing for his futureendeavours.

Students2014sawfurtherconsolidationinthenumberofstudentsintheSeniorSchool,withfiveclassesateachofYears9,10and11.Agreaternumberofstudentshasmeantthatthereisincreasedpressureonclassroomresourcesandlocker

spaces.Classsizesinmanysubjectsarealsoincreasingandthishasrequiredsomecarefulmanagementintermsoftimetabling.

schoolswith very few resourcesand spent some time inaDisabilitiesClinic to connectwith some of the childrenandadultsthere.Theywereallchallengedbythetripbutalsofoundagreatsenseoffulfilmentinbeingabletoassistotherslessfortunatethanthemselves.

Planning has already commenced for the 2015 trips toCambodiaandEastTimoralongwitha2016triptoCentralAustraliatoworkwithindigenouscommunities.

AnumberofSeniorSchoolstudentstookupthechallengeofbeingamentorforayoungerstudentintheCollege.Thefeedback from this program has been very positive andstudents have benefitted greatly from their involvement.TheworkdonebyourChaplain,MissKimBarrett, in thisareahasbeenexemplary.

ItwasparticularlyencouragingtoseestudentsputtingtheirfaithintoactiontosupportoneofourSeniorSchoolstudents,Kaitlyn Bennett, who had been receiving treatment forcancer.Herclassmateswantedtodosomethingpracticaltosupportherandthisledto“TheGreatestShave”event.Seven students had their heads shaved and numerousotherssupported thecauseby runningasausagesizzle.The event culminated in a very special, and emotional,SeniorSchoolAssemblywherewewereabletopresentachequeforover$2500toKaitlynandherfamily.

This year has seen students involved in a number ofleadership opportunities ranging from the World VisionGlobalLeadershipConvention,ChristianSchoolsAustraliaPrayer Breakfast and the GRIP Leadership Conference.TheroleofClassCaptainateachofYear9,10and11hasbeenconsolidatedandithasbeenpleasingtoseestudentsrisetothechallengeofferedbythisextraresponsibilityandtodeveloptheirleadershipskills.

TheCollegeCampingProgramwas,again,verysuccessful.StudyCampswereheldforYear11and12students.Year10studentsselected fromeitheraCityCamp,AdventureCamp or a Horse Riding camp and Year 9 studentscompleted an Outdoor Adventure camp at the MitchellRiver.

FacilitiesThe newVCEAdministration andStaffroombuilding andtheFoodandTechnologycentre,whichcommencedinlate2013, were completed by the end of Term 2, 2014. Theofficial openingof thesebuildingswaswell attendedandguestswereabletoparticipateina“high-tea”tocelebrate.

Staffhavebeenverygratefulfortheuseofthesefacilities.The introduction of the commercial kitchen has also hada positive impact on the range of subjects offered in theCreativeArtsandTechnologydepartment.

Two Science Laboratories (S1 and S2) were completelyrefurbished over the Christmas holidays andwere readyfor use from the commencement of the year. Theselaboratoriesnowallowforsciencesubjectstobetaughtinfullyequippedandcontemporarylearningspaces.

TheVCEAdministrationOffice(S6)wasrefurbishedasaclassroom and the Careers roomwas relocated into theVCECentre toprovidestudentswithdirectaccess to thenecessaryinformationtheyneed.TheStaffroom(V1)hasbeenconvertedtoaVCEStudyCentrecompletewithstudycarrelsandalso included is facility for theVCECommonRoom.

Reverse-cycle Airconditioning and Heating units wereinstalled in five Senior School classrooms (S3, S4, S5,S7andS8).ThisnowensuresthatthemajorityofSeniorSchool classrooms are equipped with climate control.Students and staff have been very appreciative of theseimprovements.

CurriculumDuring2014,staffhavebeeninvolvedinan“AssessmentforLearning”ProfessionalDevelopmentProgram.Thishasinvolvedregularmonthlymeetingsandtraininginstrategiesand techniques to improve student learning. Staff haveworked inpairs tosetspecificgoals for theirclassesandthentakenturnstoobserveeachotherimplementingthem.The emphasis has been on providing excellent teachingineveryclassroom.Staffengagementinthisprogramhasbeen excellent and the level of collaboration in planningunits ofwork has increased significantly over the courseoftheyear.

Staffhavealsodevotedsignificanttime,effortandenergyintothewritingofCurriculumunitsonATLAS.Aparticularfocus has been on constructing learning intentions andsuccess criteria for each of the units of work within aparticular semester. This will be an ongoing processthroughout 2015 as many of the VCE units are due forreaccreditation.

Another major initiative in 2014 was the implementationofMicrosoftSurfaceTabletdevices forallYear9,10and11 students. Staff have worked consistently throughouttheyear todeveloponline learningresourcesonMoodle.Student access to the internet and online resources hasincreasedsignificantly.Overall,theprogramhasbeenwellreceivedbystaffandstudents.

Year 12 Student CoachingToassistYear12studentstostayfocusedthroughouttheyear,staffhavecommencedaStudentCoachingProgram.Studentsarerequiredtosetbothshort-termandlong-termgoalsthroughouttheyearandmeetregularlywithstafftotrackhow theyareprogressing.Staffhavealsoprovidedspecificstrategiestoassiststudentstoachievetotheirfullpotential.

5.4 Pastoral/SpiritualThecommitmentoftheCollegetoprovidingPastoralandSpiritualsupport to its students is a key strength and pivotal platform ofthe Hillcrest model.Apart from the regular pastoral times in themorning,fortnightlyYearLevelassembliesandYear9-12Chapels,theChristian Studies program is an important part of the overalleducation and nurture of the Senior School students. Studentscomefromadiversityofbackgrounds–Christian,unchurchedandotherfaiths.Assuch,theChristianStudiesprogramaimstoprovidefortheneedsofallstudents.

VCE students were again given the opportunity to select from arange of Christian Studies options ranging from social justice toapologetics,toastudyofmodernculturefromaChristianperspective.Feedback from this program has seen it grow and strengthen in2014.Wehadanumberofvisitingspeakers throughout theyear

and students became more actively involved in leading Chapelservices.Anotherprogramwhichwaswell supportedbystudentswastheregularFridaylunchtimedrop-incentrerunbyyouthfromthePlanetShakerschurch.

5.5 Academic OutcomesTwoobjectivemeasuresoftheacademicprogressofourstudentsaretheYear9NAPLANtestresultsandthefinalATARscoresforthegraduatingYear12students.

5.5.1 NAPLAN ResultsAs can be seen from the NAPLAN data (see chart), the Year 9cohortwereaboveaverageacrossallfiveareascomparedtostateandnationalaverages.TheresultsinthewritingcomponentoftheNAPLAN tests were particularly pleasing. This is a credit to theexcellentworkdonein literacyandnumeracy inearlieryears, theeffortsoftheYear9teachersandstudentsastheybeganworkingtogether for the first time and themature approach taken by thestudentsintheteststhemselves.Overall,theresultsarepleasing.

5.6 VCE ResultsThereweremanytopperformersintheyearwithourhighestATAR98.25.ThetopthreestudentsachievedATARsof98.25,97.3and95.5.• Above90=11.7%ofstudents• Above80=26%ofstudents• Above70=44%ofstudents• Above60=68%ofstudents

TheaverageATARwas67.Ofthestudentswhoappliedfortertiaryplaces,96%weresuccessful. Thehigheststudyscoresobtainedwere:49–English,48–StudioArts,46–ChemistryandStudioArtsand45–LegalStudiesandPsychology.

Year12studentsof2014havebeensuccessful ingainingplacesto Tertiary institutions including, Monash University, DeakinUniversity,TheUniversityofMelbourneandRMIT.Studentshaveobtained places in the following courses: Arts, Law, Journalism,Media and Communication, Animation, Biomedicine, Science,Sport, Psychology , Design, Social Work, Business/Commerce,IT, Creative Writing, Occupational Therapy, Exercise Science,Veterinary Bioscience, Criminology, Forensic Science, MarineBiology,Education,Engineering,NursingandArchitecture.

6.0 Head of Rivercrest Christian College Comments

OnJanuary28th2014RivercrestChristianCollegeofficiallycommenced operation as a campus of Crest Education.Classes were offered for 3 and 4 year olds in the EarlyLearningCentre,Prep(twoclassesin2014)andYear1.

Itwaswonderfultobegreetedby101enthusiasticstudentsandtheirfamilieswhojoinedourCollegecommunityinourfoundation year. The students looked splendid arriving intheirRivercrestuniformonthefirstday.

Itwasappropriatethat2014was‘TheYearofFaith’atCrestEducation,andparticularlyatRivercrestaswesteppedoutinfaithandplacedRivercrestinGod’shands.Ourprayerwastobuildastrongfoundationinourfirstyearthatwouldbebuiltuponfortheyearsthatfollow.Throughthededicationandpassionofthestaff,theenthusiasmofthestudents,andthesupportoftheparentsandwidercommunity,aswellastheresourcesthatGodprovidedforusatRivercrest,wehadaverysuccessfulfirstyear.

Our motto, ‘Strength and Service’ underpinned ourphilosophy at Rivercrest throughout 2014 - to developwithinourstudentsstrongcharacterandintellect,alongwithawillingness toserveotherswithinourglobalcommunity.Christ’s twogreatestcommandments, ‘LovetheLordyourGod with all your heart, with all your soul, with all yourmindandwithallyourstrength’and ‘Loveyourneighbouras yourself’ were central to our learning and teaching asweembeddedChristianworldviewintothePrimaryYearsProgramme,ourcurriculumframeworkatRivercrest.

6.2 Academic AchievementsThe curriculum at Rivercrest is the InternationalBaccalaureate (IB) ‘Primary Years Programme’ (PYP).Rivercrest supports the mission of the IB which aims todevelopinquiring,knowledgeableandcaringyoungpeoplewho help to create a better and more peaceful worldthrough intercultural understanding and respect. Throughtheir participation in thePYPstudents are encouraged tobeactive,compassionateand life-long learners.ThePYPisaconcept-drivencurriculum,wherelearningtakesplacethrough a structured inquiry approach. Throughout 2014staffworkedcollaboratively todevelopour ‘ProgrammeofInquiry’ based on the six transdisciplinary themes. Whiletimewassetasideeachday forexplicit teaching tobuildfoundation literacy and numeracy skills, where practicalmost subject learning was embedded with the units ofinquiry. This enabled students to engage in meaningful,relevanttaskstodeepentheirknowledgeandskillsandtoconnecttheirlearningacrossthedisciplines.

Four staff members were involved in further studythroughout2014,participatingintheirMastersofEducation(IB-PYP)throughtheUniversityofMelbourne.Thisenabledthe Rivercrest team to continually review and refine ourimplementationof thePYPthroughout theyear. MadameMiddleditchalsoparticipated inaworkshopon ‘AdditionalLanguage and the PYP’ to support the introduction ofFrenchaspartofthePYPatRivercrest.

WorldSchool.InAugust2014wewerevisitedbyMrsMichellePhillipswhowasassignedtousasaMentorbytheIB.HerrolewastoreviewourimplementationofthePYP,ensuringwewereworking towardsmeeting the specified standardsandpractices.TheusualtimeframeforacandidateschooltoimplementthePYPbeforeseekingauthorizationis2-3years.MrsPhillipsrecommendedthatweapplyafterourfirstyearasshewasmostimpressedbythecommitmentofthestafftotheeffectiveimplementationoftheprogramme.RivercrestChristianCollegewill be seekingauthorization to bean IBWorldSchoolinApril2015.

6.3 Events Our Foundation Service in February was a very specialoccasion where students received commemorative pinsandcertificatestosignifytheirspecialplaceinthehistoryofRivercrest. Theyalsocontributed items toa timecapsule,whichwasalsofilledwithsignificantmemorabiliarelatedtoRivercrest’sestablishment.Thistimecapsulewillbeopenedin2025whenourYear1studentsenterYear12.

Otherserviceswereheld throughout theyear, includinganofficialopeningoftheELCBuilding,aswellasforHarmonyDay,AnzacDay andChristmas. It was terrific to see somanyGrandparentsandSpecialFriendsvisitusonourVIPDay.ItwasagreatopportunitytoshowcasetheCollegeandforstudentstosharetheirlearning.

Our ELC students participated in a number of incursionsrelatedtotheirunitsofinquiry.The3yearoldclassmet‘JackandMolly’ who came to talk about the seasons,while the4yearoldclassexploredDreamtimestoriesaspartof theDramaToolBoxvisit.ThePrepsvisitedtheMelbourneZootoexpandtheirknowledgeaboutlivingthings,whileourYear1studentsvisitedtheMCGandSportsMuseum.

SeveraltripsweremadedowntotheEnvironmentalReservebydifferentclassesthroughouttheyear.AspartofthePYP,students engage in units centred on the transdisciplinarytheme ‘Sharing thePlanet’and theEnvironmentalReserveisanoutstanding resource toextend thestudents learningoutsideoftheclassroom. Sportseventsincludedourinauguralcrosscountry,theYear1swimmingprogrammeandaCommonwealthGamesDay.MadameMiddleditchorganisedaBookFairduringtheyear,co-ordinated a spectacular Book Parade as part of BookWeek,andorganisedacartoonisttovisittheCollegetosharehisskillsanddiscusshowhegenerateshisideas.

A significant highlight of the year was the concert ‘TwoTraditional Tales’ which saw the Prep classes present thestoryof‘TheGingerbreadMan’,whilethe4yearoldELCandYear1classescombinedtoperform‘TheEnormousTurnip’.Itwasajoytowatchthestudentsonstage.

6.4 Pastoral/Spiritual This year theCollege sponsored two students through theorganisation,TheSmithFamily.Moneyraisedfromthemedand casual clothes days went towards supporting theeducationalexpensesofKori-JadeandJoshuah.Studentsacross the College wrote letters to them and regularlyprayed for them. InOctoberwedonated70shoeboxes toOperationChristmasChildfilledwitharangeof itemssuch

as toys, clothes, stationary and toiletries. These boxesweredistributedtochildreninneedacrosstheglobe.Bothactivities linked well with our motto to serve others, andwerean importantelementof thePYPwherestudentsareencouragedtothinkofwaystotakeactiontosupportothersintheglobalcommunity.

The development of the IB Learner Profile attributes hasbeenamajorfocusofourpersonalandsociallearning.Theseattributes–inquirers,thinkers,knowledgeable,caring,open-minded, risk-takers, communicators, principled, balancedandreflective-wereexploredaspartoftheunitsofinquiry,in Chapel, at assemblies, through newsletters, etc as westrivedtoequipourstudentstobecomeinternational-minded,compassionatestudentswhoactwithintegrity,empathyandrespect.

We have been blessed to have our Chaplain, Mr RowanHendrickseattheCollegeeachTuesday.MrHendrickse,orMrRowan,asthestudentscallhim,spenttimeintheclassestaking devotions, as well as offering support to groups ofstudents,individualsandfamilies.

Our buddy programmes operated at several levels thisyear.OurPrepandYearOnestudentshadtheopportunitytodevelopabuddyrelationshipwithstudentsinYearSixatHillcrest,whileourYearOnestudents took theELC4yearoldstudentsunder theirwingaspartofan in-housebuddyprogramme.Suchopportunitieswereimportantforbuildingpersonal and social skills which is an integral part of ourcurriculum.

2014 has been a year filled with many opportunities toenableRivercreststudents togrowandmature, todevelopan emerging repertoire of skills and to gain a greaterunderstandingoftheirworld.

6.5 Parents & Friends Association - Rivercrest In2014averydedicatedgroupofparentscametogethertoestablish the Rivercrest Parents and Friends Association.ThroughouttheyeartheyhaveoverseentheSchoolBankingProgramme,organizedFather’sDayandMother’sDaystalls,soldrefreshmentsattheconcert,ranatea-towelfundraiser,organiseda familyphotodayandheldasausagesizzleatMasters.MysincerethanksgotoallwhohavebeeninvolvedthroughouttheyeartoorganiseeventsandfostercommunityspiritatRivercrest.

6.6 Conclusion In concluding, I would like to acknowledge and thank allRivercrest parents and the wider Crest Community fortheirsupport inourfirstyearofoperation. Encouragementand feedback has been pivotal in shaping future years atRivercrest.

7.0 Ayr Hill Equestrian CentreThe Ayr Hill Equestrian Centre was utilised extensivelythroughout 2014 for a whole range of intraschool andinterschoolevents.Inaddition,severaloutsideorganisationshiredthefacilitytoruntheirownprograms.TheexpansionoftheutilisationoftheEquestrianCentrehasbeensignificantsincethecompletionoftheTradeTrainingCentreonoursiteandwelookforwardtofurthersustainablegrowthintothefuture.Overthecourseof2014,therehasbeenagrowingawarenessoftheneedtoseetheAyrHillEquestrianCentrefunctioning as a separate unit of Crest Education Ltd.WorkhasbeendonetocontinuetoshapeanddevelopthebusinessmodeloftheEquestrianCentreandthisworkwillcontinueinto2015.

7.1 Interschool Competitions HillcrestChristianCollege ispartofagrowingnetworkofschools involved in the Victorian Equestrian InterschoolSeries. The competitions occurred regularly throughoutVictoriaindifferentregions.SixofthesecompetitionsformqualifiersfortheoverallgrandfinalheldattheendofTerm3atWerribeeParkNationalEquestrianCentre.RidersinthetopofeachlevelhavetheabilitytocompeteintheNationalInterschoolTitlesinSydneyeachSeptember.

ThisyearHillcresthadmanysuccessfulriders,rangingfromthosewhowereabletocompeteforthefirsttimetoariderthatmanaged toqualify for theNationalTitles. TameishaKelly,onhereverreliableJinxMeJane,wasexceptionallysuccessfulintheAdvancedSectionofshowjumpingtomakeitthroughthefourqualifyingroundsandtheGrandFinaltoqualifyforthenationals.Tameishacameaveryrespectabletenthoverallandwelookforwardtohercontinuedsuccess.

This year Hillcrest finished third in our own InterschoolDressageserieshostedatAyrHillEquestrianCentre.WealsofinishedthirdintheInterschoolShowJumping,whichwasagainhostedatourvenue.

7.2 Equestrian CampYear 10 have the option of choosing to participate in theEquestrianCamphostedatTonimbuk.Eachyearwetruckthe horses and students to this picturesque part of the

BunyipStateForestandridershavefourdaysoftrailridingaroundthebushtracks.It isahighlightoftheyearforallstaffandstudents.

7.3 AuditsThe Equestrian Centre has focused on benchmarking,industry standards, compliance and quality standardsthroughout2014.Wehavetakenanotherhugestepintotheworldofcontinuousimprovementandriskassessments.Ourauditingprocesseshavestood the testwithorganisationssuchasWorkSafe,VictorianRegistrationandQualificationsAuthority (VRQA), Victorian Curriculum and AssessmentAuthority(VCAA),andHorseSafetyAustralia.ItisnotablethatweareoneofonlytwentyvenuesthroughoutAustraliathatisendorsedbyHorseSafetyAustralia.

7.4 Community groupsTheCityofCaseyorganisedthe25th‘RidingoftheBounds’thisyear.HostedattheCollegegrounds,thehundredriderswent to our Environmental Reserve and toured aroundthe banks of the Cardinia Creek in a two hour trail ride,which concluded at the indoor arenawhere awardswerepresented.ItisoneimportantwayinwhichwearemakingmeaningfulconnectionswiththebroaderCaseycommunity.

TheCollegehaswon the ‘ChampionRider’award for thelast few years, and this year Miss Rachael Lovett tookthe award. Horse and riderwere dressed inHorseSafeHi-Visclothingand lookverysimilar to thehorse’s formeroccupationinthepoliceforce.Hillcrestalsowonthe‘BestGroup’awardwithanarrayofdifferentriders.

During2014,theschoolhascontinuedtodevelopitsCapitalinfrastructure program to continue tomeet the needs of adynamicschoolcommunity.

Rivercrest ClassroomsAs part of the continuing establishment of Rivercrest, sixclassrooms were constructed during 2014 to cater for thestrong enrolment growth we are experiencing. This facilitywillutilizetwoclassroomspacestoprovideamuchneededindoormulti-use space for the school in its early phase ofdevelopment.

Hillcrest Senior School Food TechnologyToenhanceeducationalopportunities in theSeniorSchool,aFoodTechnologycenterwascompletedandopenedthatwillprovide four learningareas for instruction,practiceandpreparationofmeals.Asmallkitchengardenisattachedtothefacilitytoencouragetheuseofself-grownfoods.ThereispotentialinthiscommercialgradefacilitytoofferHospitalityprogramsinthefuture.

Hillcrest Senior School AdministrationThe completion of a new administration facility will assistour Senior School staff in their roles, by allowing greateropportunities for professional interactions between theteam,toenhancetheachievementofwholeschoollearningplans.TheAustralianGovernmenthadgenerouslyprovideda grant of $600K towards both Senior School projects.Theconstructionof this facilityalso freedupmuchneededclassroomspaceintheSeniorSchool.

Hillcrest Junior School OvalTheneed foradditionalopenplayspace for JuniorSchoolstudentsdrovethedevelopmentofanewjunioroval,whichhasjustbeencompleted.

Hillcrest Gymnasium EquipmentFurther enhancing the Physical education offerings atHillcrest, the school upgraded its weights equipment androom,andaddedequipmentforanewCircuittrainingarea.Thiscommercialgradeequipmentwillprovidemanyyearsof

opportunitiestostudentsandstafftolearnmoreabouthowtocarefortheirbodies.

8.2 Developments - FutureThe level of facility development at Hillcrest has beensignificantandsustained in recentyears,with2014seeingtheSeniorSchoolupgradesbeingcompleted.ForHillcrest,the immediate future sees development being targetedat upgrading someof the existing buildings and spaces tofurtherenhancetheexistingschoolfacilities.Therewillalsobea focuson connectingmains trunk services, like sewerandwater, to thesite.Theseprojectswillbe identifiedandprioritisedinlinewiththeupdatedStrategicplanthatisbeingfinalisedinlate2015.

The main capital focus will continue to be the newlydevelopingRivercrest campus.2015 is thesecondyearofoperation,andwith3newclasses(75students)beingaddedeach year, wemust plan to provide new classrooms eachyear. Inaddition to loan funding, theVISBGAhasassisteduswithagrantof$600K,tofundconstructionofStage3(3classrooms) in 2015. We are also currently updating ourMasterplan to provide a further level of detailed planningto the PYP campus development to ensure that we canaccommodate the additional infrastructure and facilitiesrequiredbyanewschoolcampus.

8.3 Student AttendanceAttendance rates at Hillcrest have traditionally beenvery strong. Crest schools use the Synergetic StudentManagementSystemforattendancemonitoring.Attendanceis formally collected twice a day (am/pm) and there is anexpectation that teachers keep a record of attendance ineachoftheirclasses.Absencelistsaregeneratedandsenttoallappropriatestaff.

Theparentorguardianofanystudentwhoisabsentwithoutappropriate reason / notice are contacted by the Schoolby phone that day. If attendance is becoming problematic,systemsareinplacetoensureparentsare informedofthesituation and that procedures are in place to remedy oralleviatethesituation.

8.4 Satisfaction SurveysThere are a variety of ways in which schools can measureparentandstudentsatisfaction.Weendeavourtousedatafroma number of sources – quantitative (eg. surveys) can providesomevalidfeedbackthoughsomequestionwhetherthesegiveacompletepicture.Inaddition,wealsoaimtogatherandassessqualitativedata,andingeneralthismaterialissupportiveofthedirection and operation of the school.Thiswhen linked to themostimportantsourceofadvertisingabouttheschoolispositive“wordofmouth”,paintsapictureofasuccessful,happy(butnotperfect)school.Webelieve thebestmeasureofsatisfaction isthe feedback frompaststudentsenjoyingsuccess inwhateverpaththeytakeafterschoolandthecontinuedsignificantdemandforplacesattheschool.

The second was a Mind Matters survey which askedstudents about their perceptions of life at the school.The results, from the 360 survey responses, wereoverwhelminglypositivewithregardstostudent’ssenseofbelongingatschooland theirengagementwith theirstudies,friendsandfamilies.

Parent Satisfaction Eachyear,wesendoutsurveystoallnewfamiliesanda separate survey to a stratified random sample of allongoingfamilies.Hencebothnewandongoingfamilieswere approached to provide feedback on their level ofsatisfactionwiththeschool,andwehadagoodresponserate that is our highest in recent years. High levels ofsatisfaction were found for the following areas: schoolfacilities and resources, student safety and wellbeing,spiritualvaluesandpositiveenvironment.Thesefindingsare largely consistent with previous years’ findings. Inaddition,thedataindicatedthatparentsatisfactionlevelshad increased in recent years in theareasof teachingand learning, parent/teacher interaction and studentengagement.

Staff SatisfactionThesurveyofschoolstaffgenerallyindicatedapositiveexperience for our staff. The most significant positivedevelopmentswereseenintheareasoffacultyleadershipand curriculumdevelopmentwith these changesbeingdriven through positive changes in collaboration, skilldevelopmentandfacultyimprovement.Themaintenanceof healthy open communication betweenmanagementand frontline staff was noted as an area for ongoingdevelopment.

Staff Professional DevelopmentCrest Educationworks to attract, developand retainhighquality teachers toensureourstudentshavethebestopportunity forsuccess.Keytothisstrategyisourfocusonproviding trainingopportunities todevelopthe individual and whole-school learningneedsofourstaff.

In 2014, $100,317 was paid for courses,materials, travel and costs for staffprofessionaldevelopment.Ontopofthesedirect costs, we incur costs for the hiringof casual relief teachers to cover teacherrelease time and also imputed costsfor our own staff who cover classes forcolleagues.Therehasbeenastrongmoveto whole school training that involves ourLearning andTeaching teams leading thetrainingagendaofourstaffsothattheycancontinuallyreflectonourpractice,respondtoevidence,learnnewstrategiesandmakeimprovements. The21stcenturyisanexcitingtimetobeaneducatorand,asateam,wearecommittedtocontinuallyreviewingandimprovingourpracticestoensurethattheclassroomisasafe,engagingandproductiveenvironmentforalllearners.
