PROGRAM DETAILS

The criminal justice system has evolved greatly in recent years. No longer can applicants with minimal job skills expect to be hired. Today’s successful candidates must understand and demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the profession and pass measurable performance standards. Students in the Somerset Community College Criminal Justice program receive this advanced instruction

as part of their required course work. The Criminal Justice (CRJ) degree curriculum offers students a strong academic program which includes courses relating to human behavior, government, communications, theories in policing, corrections, and issues and ethical considerations pertaining to practitioners within the criminal justice system.

Graduates of the program will be qualified to seek job opportunities at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels. Those completing the degree requirements are not restricted to government work. Many industries and other private companies now employ qualified professionals who are skilled in

security and loss prevention.

SCC’s Criminal Justice program prepares graduates for entry level positions in policing, corrections, and related occupations within the criminal justice system. With experience, Criminal Justice graduates may also advance into administrative or supervisory positions in policing, corrections, security and loss prevention, or other components of the criminal justice system.

PROGRAM COORDINATOR’S NOTES:

Criminal Justice technical competencies that have been identified by KCTCS CRJ Curriculum Committee include:1. Demonstrate an understanding of the

nature and functions of the criminal justice system.

2. Identify and understand the basic concepts of criminal justice.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of trends, issues, and ethics of criminal justice.

4. Identify, understand, and demonstrate the basic concepts of criminal investigations.

Criminal background checks are currently not required for the Criminal Justice AAS Program; however students should understand that certain disqualifiers may hinder employment in the field of criminal justice. Such disqualifiers include, but are not limited to the following: criminal convictions, substance abuse, offensive social media activities, excessive traffic related offenses, and visible tattoos and body piercings. Students seeking employment in the criminal justice field or related field should research the requirements and disqualifiers of their desired areas or agencies of employment.

ADDITIONAl INfORMATION:

Progression in the Criminal Justice Program is contingent upon the achievement of a grade of “C” or better in each CRJ course and maintenance of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better (on a 4.0 scale). The grading scale for criminal justice courses with a Pass/Fail scale, the grade of “P or Pass” meets the requirement for the Criminal Justice Program.

Criminal Justice Program Certificates are embedded in the Criminal Justice AAS Degree. The certificates are not stand alone certificates; therefore a student cannot receive financial aid for just a certificate. The student must be a Criminal Justice AAS Degree seeker in order to obtain program certificates.
