Bristol’s medical historyThe threatened demise of the Bristol Royal Infirmary Old Building (begun 1737) for redevelopmentby the hospital trust has prompted this symposium on Bristolians’ health. The talks will take a freshlook at aspects of the health, illness, disability, mental care and treatment of Bristol’s populationfrom the earliest days of the town through to the 19th century. We will note that medieval notionsof medicine included the efficacy of pilgrimage and holy wells and the provision of public health carethrough hospitals and monasteries. A review of the skeletal evidence will throw light on mortality,disease and life-style in Bristol from the 12th to the 19th century. An examination of mental healthcare available in Bristol from c 1800 and how the poor obtained medicine from the BristolDispensary will illuminate two little-known aspects of Bristol’s health history.
