Chester is well located and highlyconnected. Chester Railway Stationhas grown significantly in recentyears and is one of the busieststations in the North West. Over 4million people used the station in2017 and the twice hourly railservice to London puts the capitaljust 2 hours away.

Hollyoaks is Channel 4’s biggestNations and Regions commissionedprogramme. First aired in 1995 andon broadcast five episodes a weekHollyoaks is one of the UK’s long-standing dramas.

The BAFTA nominated Secret Lifeof the Zoo is filmed at Chester Zoo -Britain’s most popular zoo hosting1.9 million visitors every year.

Chester was also home to the firstepisode of Britain’s Most HistoricTowns produced by IWC andbroadcast on Channel 4 in 2018.

Born Naughty? The four-partseries featured the paediatricianDr Ravi Jayaram from theCountess of Chester Hospitalhelping children with behaviouralproblems.

North Wales has provided thesetting for Severn Screen’s crimedrama Hidden (Craith) that wasfilmed on location in Snowdoniaand broadcast on S4C and BBCWales.

• Students gain experienceworking on Glyndwr.tv, takingopportunities to lead livesessions and get involved inproduction. The School ofCreative Arts is also home toCalon FM, a community radiostation with an FM license.

• The Terry Hands Studio, based onthe Wrexham Campus, is aperforming arts space used by ourtheatre and TV students. Thestudio is named after the founderof the Liverpool EverymanTheatre and the previous directorof the Royal ShakespeareCompany, in recognition of his roletransforming Theatr Clwyd to themost successful theatre in Wales.

Glyndŵr University’s Centre forthe Creative Industries. The £5mCentre for Creative Industriesopened in 2011 and supportscourses in art, music, journalism,media, TV, film and theatre, it hasbecome home to BBC Cymru Walesin North East Wales providing newproduction facilities for its staff,guests and contributors. The centrefeatures state-of-the-art TV andradio studios, 3D workshops, designstudios, IT suites, Apple trainingsuites and post-production audioand visual facilities. Provides astimulus to the development ofprivate and spin-out businessesassociated with the creativeindustries.

Coleg Cambria – is one of thelargest further and highereducation colleges in the UK withapproximately 7,000 full timestudents and 20,000 part timestudents. Offers courses in creativemedia production, live eventsproduction and performing arts.

Cheshire College – South & Westoffers young people in Chester andthe surrounding area an inspiringrange of full-time courses andapprenticeships within the creativeindustries including mediaproduction, games development,visual arts, performing arts andmusic. This ranges from entry levelthrough to higher level and degreeprogrammes.

The College has also helped tobreak the mould in the traditionallymale dominated industry with thelatest WorldSkills winner Penny–Jane Prior, from Chester, who isnow recognised as the best 3DDigital Game Art Student withinher age group in the UK. TheCollege also has strong links toproduction companies based inManchester, with students gainingwork experience at David EllisonFilms filming a portfolio car advert,working on set and as runners andassistant camera operators.

The College’s Games Developmentdepartment has produced two Goldmedallists at the prestigiousWorldSkills event in 2015 and2017.Daniel McCabe, who won in2015, went on to represent the UK inthe 2016 EuroSkills finals in Swedenand was successfully crowned best3D game designer in Europe.

University of Chester’s Departmentof Media offers programmes intelevision, radio, music production,media and film studies, advertising,photography and journalism at ourcampus sites in Chester andWarrington, serving more than 500students at undergraduate, Master’sand PhD levels. In 2013 the provisionwas ranked best in England for overallstudent satisfaction.

The Department has a commercialoffice which produces video and othermedia outputs commissioned byprofessional clients, and students areactively engaged in such productions– as well as other professional workexperience opportunities – as part oftheir studies.

The International Screen SchoolManchester (ISSM), led by ManchesterMetropolitan University (MMU), is aproject intended to developinterdisciplinary talent to support theNorth West’s creative and digitalindustries. It will provide multi-disciplinary undergraduate, post-graduate and apprenticeshipprogrammes in screen and post-screenmedia — and it will also be a hub for newbusinesses and innovators.

We have established Creative Futures -a creative industries conference thatbrings discipline-leading experts, fromWales, the UK and the World, into NorthEast Wales, so that their creativity andexpertise can be shared with new andupcoming artists, writers, designersand performers. Organised and hostedby Wrexham Glyndŵr University, it isdedicated to developing the technical,professional and employability skills ofcreative individuals, and aims atbroadening horizons.

Action Transport Theatre

Action Transport Theatre based inEllesmere Port are recognised asnational leaders and are part of theArts Council England’s NationalPortfolio.The company’s many strandsinclude free participationprogrammes, working with some ofthe town’s most vulnerable anddisadvantaged young people.These include young people with

learning difficulties and who areoften SEN statemented. In the last12 months ATT’s engagementprogramme has connected withnearly 14,000 children and youngpeople, prioritising the leastengaged communities and highestlevels of social deprivation. Chester and Cheshire West Councilare currently working with thecompany to upgrade and developtheir existing building – creating acultural centre for children, youngpeople and their families.

Cheshire Dance

Specialises in dance and diverse practice including a considerable focus onhealth and wellbeing. They have recently developed a strand of workaimed at those suffering from dementia.

Vic Studios

This is an award-winning SocialEnterprise in Wrexham focused onimproving the lives and prospectsof young people and the widercommunity through music. Sinceopening in 2016, Vic Studios hasdelivered in excess of 50 nationally-recognised qualifications to itsusers. They have been awarded BigLottery funding to deliver sessionsincluding DJing, music technology,video and film making. Theyprovide professional qualityrehearsal and recording facilitiesand access to skilled soundengineering.

Fallen Angels Dance Theatre

An emerging company based atStoryhouse, works and supportsthose in recovery from addiction totransform their lives, share theirrecovery journey through dance,performance and creativity.

In addition, there are anincreasing number ofstrong outreach initiativesfocusing on areas ofdeprivation in Cheshire toprovide focusedprogrammes of support. Weled the national campaignfor social mobility in thearts using measures towiden access to the artsand creative sectors forthose from less advantaged

backgrounds. This includedworking with Michael Sheenand others. Our efforts toincrease participation forall and to generateopportunities in culturaland creative practice andemployment for non-traditional audiences wouldbe significantly enhancedby the presence of abroadcaster committed todiversity and inspiration.
