The Child Study Center Camp SOAR

2

“Our son is able to get away and experience amazing things without feeling ‘dependent’ on us. It’s like a whole new child emerges!”

“Always a positive experience! Our daughter did not want to leave camp.”

“Jake eats new foods. He played in the sand, he never does that. We go out to eat, we cannot do that with Jake. It’s wonderful for our family.”

“It’s the only week of the whole year that my husband and I get to spend alone.”

“Luke has had amazing counselors EVERY year he has attended.”

“Camp SOAR really truly gives us a break from the 24/7 mental and physical demand of caring for our son.”

“I can honestly say that Camp SOAR was one of the best experiences of my life.”

“The opportunity to work at Camp SOAR opened my eyes to all that I have to be thankful for, as well as all that I should give back and share with others.”

“While we try to teach campers all about life, our campers teach us what life is all about.”

“Being at camp has taught me how much I should appreciate my ability to do simple tasks that people often take for granted. I have also learned many valuable life skills such as patience, respect for others.”

“I volunteered to help others, but had no idea what an impact it would make on me. I am a changed person because of my week at Camp SOAR.”

“I have gained new perspectives and appreciation. Camp SOAR is about ability, not disability.”

Celebrating 15 Years of Camp SOAR ~

3

In 2014, Children’s Research Triangle’s (CRT) Trauma Treatment Program continued to expand service capacity and provided trauma-informed services to 15% more youth than in 2013.

In July, CRT launched an initiative funded through a two-year grant from Bright Promises Foundation, allowing us to partner with the Office of the Cook County Public Guardian (OPG) and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Cook and Lake Counties to promote awareness and understanding of the needs of trauma-impacted children, as well as the impact of working with trauma-impacted children on employees and volunteers.

CRT was chosen as a pilot site by the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress as part of an effort to improve national data collection and dissemination of interventions for traumatized children.

Camp SOAR celebrated it’s 15th anniversary of summer fun with 104 happy

campers and 117 dedicated volunteers.

CRT Highlights of 2014 ~

CRT clinicians often provide intensive, long-term treatment for children

who have experienced abuse, neglect and traumatic loss. Since June 2011,

CRT clinicians have provided weekly trauma-focused psychotherapy for

Messiah and Guenther, brothers who entered the child protective system

because they were being mistreated by the relatives responsible for their care.

Just seven and four years old, the boys had already lived in several different

homes with little sense of safety or permanence in their young lives. Referred

by their DCFS caseworker, the boys began therapy on shaky ground.

Over time, a bond built on trust and

consistency allowed Messiah and Guenther to work through

traumatic experiences and develop the capacity for healthy

relationships. CRT therapists were also able to advocate for

appropriate pre-adoptive placement, where the boys have found a

loving and permanent home with Tyler and Lorenda Adams.

Messiah and Guenther have thrived with the Adams as their

“forever family,” with CRT’s therapists playing an integral role in

supporting both parents and children on their journey as a family.

CRT is unique in that our therapists are able to maintain

long-term treatment relationships with children and families who have extremely complex needs.

These children often face barriers to treatment or bounce from one provider to the next, receiving

disjointed services or band-aid solutions with a one size fits all approach. Although they possess

amazing resiliency, Messiah and Guenther are young, developing children and, like all children,

needed loving and supportive adults in their lives to help them transition from difficult experiences

toward positive growth.

Now that the boys have been officially adopted, Tyler, Lorenda, Messiah and Guenther

will pursue their dream of moving to Georgia this spring and

will continue to grow as a “forever family.”

Project Thrive, funded by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF),

is a 5-year federal research grant focusing on improving the well-being of children

in foster care who are affected by prenatal or environmental substance exposure.

CRT’s Project Thrive Team provides on-site services at SOS Children’s Villages

Illinois, in Chicago and Lockport.

Collaborating with SOS staff, CRT therapists and family support specialists

provide intensive mental health interventions for foster children, as well as their

biological and foster parents.

Children’s Research Triangle is proudly looking forward to the

upcoming publication of our paper “Mental Health Disorders Among

Children within Child Welfare Who Have Prenatal Substance

Exposure: Rural vs. Urban Populations” in Child Welfare.

Our ongoing program evaluation demonstrates that CRT’s clinical

programs tremendously improve the lives of our clients. Project

Thrive is in its third year, and through partnership with Mathematica

Policy Research we are excited to have begun sharing data as part of

a national evaluation project. Our hope is this data encourages

increased future federal funding for at-risk youth.

We are also thrilled to be part of a pilot project with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network

(NCTSN) that focuses on collecting data from multiple grantees nationwide. This shared data will

allow experts throughout the country to analyze outcomes and better understand intervention

methods with youth who have experienced trauma.

CRT is happy to report another successful year completed with our research interns. During 2014,

training and valuable hands-on experience were provided to fourteen undergraduates, one graduate,

and one high school student from a variety of Midwestern schools. Many of our interns are accepted

into graduate programs in medicine, psychology, and social work.

Camp SOAR—Our Fifteenth Year What began in 2000 as a respite for 19 special needs children

assisted by 21 young volunteers has grown into an overnight camping

experience for over 100 children each summer. Not only does Camp SOAR

have a waiting list for campers, but for counselors as well. Many of the

original volunteers have gone on to careers in the special education field,

while continuing to be a very important part of Camp SOAR.

Children with, but not limited to, autism, Down Syndrome,

cognitive impairment or cerebral palsy have the opportunity to enjoy the

fun, friends and benefits of overnight summer camp. Campers are partnered

with a one-to-one dedicated volunteer counselor who assists them in making the most of their Camp

SOAR experience. Parents know their child is having a wonderful time, making new friends and

gaining independence, while in a safe and caring environment.

With the support of individual donors and foundation grants, Camp SOAR has provided 15

years of fun filled days of summer for special needs children, invaluable experience for the volunteers

and a few days of much needed rest and relaxation for parents.
