CRTC's Bureau firm on Cancon commitmentAndre Bureau, CRTC Chairman told broad-casters, attending their 53rd annual conven-tion of the Western Association of Brea: -casters that "The Commission has completedits wide-ranging revision of radio, television, and cable TV regulations . . . and while theintent has been to simplify, to adapt and toeliminate regulations which were burdensomeand unnecessary, they demand a new sense ofresponsibility and responsiveness on yourpart." He continued with, "It will be asmuch your responsiblity as that of the Com-mission to ensure that the new systemworks."

Bureau, in one of his rare "gloves -off"performances told his audience, "There areonly two basic requirements left in the regula-

Mayor Koch has once again proclaim-ed the week as New Music Week, and he willpresent the proclamation to the expected6,000 plus delegates expected.

Raleigh Pinksey of The Raleigh Group, points out that "NMS 8 will uphold itshistory and belief in the roots of music withmore dance and alternative elementscoverage." She continues with "Increasedemphasis will be seen in the areas of moraland philosophical issues concerning the in-dustry. Copyright in the Digital Age; SouthAfrica Unrevisited; Music & Peace; MusicianImmigration Laws; and Tax on RecordedU.K. Materials are some of the platforms inNMS 8."

The New Music Seminar has increasedits international scope with representation in7 countries. Included in the 65 panel agendawill be an International Publishers Debate;with Market Surveys of the Benelux coun-tries, Australia, Japan, Canada, the U.K.,and Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Scan-dinavia. As well, Australia and Canada plusthe Benelux countries are scheduled fornative talent showcases. Major label and in-dependent labels will also showcase. tions for AM broadcasting. First, 30 percentthe musical selections broadcast by each

station must be Canadian and scheduled in areasonable manner each day." He stressed,"This remains our fundamental commit-ment. If we want to maintain a truly Cana-dian broadcasting system, this unique contentrequirement is an essential part of it."

Bureau went on to punch home his pointwith, "The Commission will be fair but firmin the enforcement of this regulation. Lessregulation does not mean less accountabilityor responsibility. On the contrary, it meansan increased responsiblity to prove your con-tribution to Canadians and the broadcastingsystem."

The second basic requirement thatBureau refers to above deals with programlogs and logger tapes, which has not onlybeen maintained but also strengthened. "Theavailability of a complete, clear and intelligi-ble logger tape is particularly important as itallows the Commission not only to initiate itsown verification of programming, but also toact on complaints from the general publicconcerning programming matters," theCRTC Chairman told members of the WAB,continuing with "It is also of great impor-tance to you, the broadcaster, for it enablesyou to do a number of things that I do nothave to list here."

Bureau also touched on transfers ofownerships, putting the onus on the applicantto demonstrate to the Commission that theapplication is the best possible proposalunder the circumstances.

"Let me make it very clear," saidBureau, "that we have not adopted simplemechanical criteria or standards for judgingsubmissions of this kind. There could be nouniform rule. Frankly, it would be unfair. Each application is judged individually on itsown merit," citing as an example, "it may bethat for a station in danger of bankruptcy orabout to go off the air, a significant benefitwould be a proposal by a new owner to keepthe station in operation and serving the

public. On the the other hand, someone pro-posing to acquire a highly profitable stationwill have to go beyond that station's past per-formance. It will also be expected that if theproposed new owner is a large group, the pro-posal should be commensurate in terms ofbenefits."

In conclusion, Bureau told his audience,"It is imperative that you take the time anddevote the energies to convey your opinionsto your elected representatives who willdebate a proposed new Broadcasting Act.Fundamental questions could be on the table. The independence of the system could be atthe centre of the debate. The Commission, assupervisor of the system, will make its viewsknown, but you are the first interested party. We expect that, collectively through yourassociations or individually, you will alloweverybody the benefit of your expert advice."

Working Rooms at NMSfor CAPAC & PROCANOpen to all registrants at this year's NewMusic Seminar will be several "workingrooms" operated jointly by Canada's perfor-ming rights organizations, PROCAN andCAPAC. This is the first time such a venturehas been attempted. The rooms will offer, tothose interested, video and sound recordingequipment, but they are not to be consideredhospitality areas, stresses PROCAN's NancyGyokeres.

"We've had representation therebefore," says Gyokeres, "and we've foundwith the thousands attending, Canadiansreally needed a focus. We want all registrantsto know that if they want to contact so-meone, or just generally know more aboutCanadian music, they should go to the PRO-CAN/CAPAC room."

Representing PROCAN at the rooms(actually suites in the Marriott Marquis) areMark Caporal, and Jeff Bateman, and fromtheir Quebec division, Joanne Pouliot. Mak-ing the trip for CAPAC are Roy Windhager,Lynn Foster, Richard Flohill, and SuzanneMunger from their Montreal office.

CMPA accepting entries for Song of Year AwardThe Canadian Music Publishers Association(CMPA) is now accepting entries for theirSong of The Year Award for 1986. Entriesmust be songs (with or without lyrics), writ-ten in their entirety by one or more Canadiancitizens, landed immigrants, or Canadianresidents for more than six months (as defin-ed by the CRTC), and who are members oraffiliates of CMPA, CAPAC, or PROCAN-SDE.

All eligible entries must be submitted byJuly 15, 1987 to qualify. Fran Shaw, Coor-dinator for the Song of The Year Award, stresses, "this is not a song contest. TheCMPA is recognizing, with these awards,Canadian songs that have already achievedsuccess in the marketplace."

The first awards, presented last year, went to Bryan Adams and Jim Valiance, inthe Rock category for Run To You, publish-ed by Adams Communications Inc./CalypsoToonz/Irving Music Inc.; to Larry Gowan inthe Adult Contemporary/Pop category for ACriminal Mind, published by Mark -CainMusic; and in the Country category, to Terry

Coors series sparks busy summer for O'Keefe

The Coors (Molson) series of Broadway shows at Toronto's O'Keefe Centre has

created an unusual run on the box office. Martin Onrot, Programming Manager at the

O'Keefe, reports that through their Inner Cir- cle Membership (4,000 members), and the

general public, the series is $200,000 ahead of last year, and this was accomplished within a

month of the initial announcement. The first in the series will be My One

And Only, starring Tony Award -winning Tommy Tune and Stephanie Zimbalist,

which will have a run from June 30 through July 5. This will be followed by Sound Of

Music, Song & Dance, Westside Story, and 42nd. Street.

Aside from the theatre series, the sum- mer will also see an exciting lineup of concert

dates. These include a coupling of Diahann Carroll and Vic Damone for An Evening of

Love Songs, firmed for June 22 & 23; Mitzi Gaynor, who is scheduled for 3 nights (July

9, 10 & 11); and Tom Jones (July 30 through Aug. 1).

Lynda Kay coordinating Cobourg Festival of Arts

The Town of Cobourg, Ontario, bolstered with funding from the Sesquicentennial Com-

mittee and the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture are staging their first Waterfront Festival of Arts, Crafts, Music & Song. The

Music & Song portion for the festival which takes place July 4th, is being coordinated by

Lynda Kay, who became quite popular in the record industry as Manager Press/Publicity

for CBS Records, and who left a couple of years ago to concentrate on raising a family.

She has since been keeping herself actively in- volved with local music events.

"The festival will resemble a mini -

Mariposa," says Kay, "and we're hoping if this year is a success, to stage another next

year." The music will range from Celtic to con-

temporary folk. The list of performers in- clude Rick Bauer, Jamie Snider, Bill Russell,

James Gordon, Joe Bulger, Catherine Crowe, Martin Gould, Ian Goodfellow and

members of the Cobourg Folk Club. Several of the musicians will also be running

workshops. The Grand Finale Concert will feature

Sneezy Waters. Prior to the Waters concert, Rick Bauer, Jamie Snider and James Gordon

will play an opening set of traditional folk music. Gordon recently released his debut album, Looking For Livingstone, on the

Freedom label.

34 - up 90 percent; and 25 to 49 - up 87 per-

over the period of 6 am to 8 pm. The 18 to 34 age group was up 66 percent; 18 to 49 - up 83

percent; 25 to 34 - up 135 percent; and 25 to 49

- up 111 percent. Waters explains that the above percen-

tage increases "represent the average of the three BBM ratings following the format

change compared to the average of the three BBM ratings prior to the format change. All

ratings are for adults between the ages of 18 and 49."

The numbers were bolstered by letters sent into the station by "satisfied" listeners,

an impressive mix of old and obviously, very loyal listeners, and those who had discovered and liked the station's change in format.

Murray cheque and gold presented to Springhill

Capitol recording star Anne Murray helped kick off a hospital fund-raising campaign in her hometown of Springhill, Nova Scotia, by

donating $100,000 in memory of her father Carson Murray, who was a doctor in the hospital for many years. Organizers hope to

raise $2.5 million dollars for the renovation and expansion of the hospital, expected to cost $12 million.

As an added bonus, Murray gave the town the gold record she earned for

Snowbird, her 1970 hit that sent her on the way to stardom. The award will be displayed

in the new Anne Murray Centre in Springhill.

Les Miserables ... where??A major legitimate theatrical producer couldbe surprised this week. From what I hear . .

Elgin Winter Garden may be too small forLes Miserables, which is scheduled to open inCanada in 1989. Apparently, the peoplebehind "Les Miz" want a smaller venuewhere they can sit down for a year. The RoyalAlexandra has been suggested, but whatabout their subscription series? It's also beenrumoured that the O'Keefe has made a bidfor this Tony -award winning musical, butthey want to mount it for only 19 weeks.

As radio goes ... so goes tags!!Remember AOR . . . ? Album OrientedRadio was what the experts tagged on tothose FM stations boasting a "progressiverock" format, and the move was away fromthe AM stations . . . the stations they taggedCHR. Well . . . have you listened to yourlocal AOR station lately? A record companypromo/press person said to me just the otherday, "AOR is the test market for CHR."Another told me, "I never realized how ex-citing AM radio was, until I began listeningto FM."

Not more restrictions and regulations??Well . . . I'm just in the mood to say a fewthings that I'll probably regret . . . and lash

out at some of the programmers across thiscountry who rely so much on "experts" andestablished hits before they'll play a newrecord. Take a chance . . . what a pile ofhogwash! There was a time when stationshired experts to shift the blame when thebook came out and the ratings weren't whatthey expected them to be. Those days aregone. No one . . . and I repeat NO ONE,knows a station like whoever's in charge, and they know the territory better thananyone else. As for the piles and piles ofstatistics that were needed before a recordcould be programmed . . . that's a thing ofthe past. Radio has changed a great deal andmost stations can take a chance . . . choose arecord . .. air it, and develop an audience forthat record . . . and they know it. The factthat some of them still act like lame ducks issomething that is very sad and it's these few,who are casting a shadow over the rest. TheCRTC constantly uses this example of out-side experts and proven potential to regulatestations, and before they come down withany more regulations that limit this or limitthat . . . I think the programmers of thiscountry should indicate to them that the pro-gramming of their station's music occursthere and then and not somewhere elsetomorrow. Gone are the days when a recordhas to be tracked and tracked and trackedand tracked before it gets played. GROWUP! (EC: Are we being "over statistiked"?)

Rumours brewing about breweries!!When those breweries launch their recordcompanies . . . they tell us they will beseparate and apart from the brewery .. . or sothey'll have us believe. The labels won't benamed after "your favourite suds", nor willtheir acts sing the praises or the consumptionof . . . Okay? Now . . . after all theheadhunters and researchers have filed theirreports, and after these guys tell us how muchmoney they have to invest . . . has anyonementioned Astra Records, or Much Recordsor Seffel Records to them? How many otherscan you name that had everything going ex-cept one thing . . . SUCCESS!!! (EC: Youcan tell them!!)

When heads are found! Oh Boy!!The fun game in the industry is to guess whothe heads will be when they are found. Whowill administer and spend all this big moneythat comes from the suds guys!! Well, thereare a number of names being bandiedaround, and all of them are glib, and know-it-all experts, who are most likely to ease (EC:Ooze!) their way into the job. It's fun toguess, and it's funny how often the samenames keep coming up. If you want to play, write three names down and send it to me orElvira and become part of the guessing game.(EC: Glib is the word that oozes to mind!!)

" ... It's just not true ... "In last week's RPM, it was mentioned in thepiece under" More appointments for A&Mstaffers", that "Today, A&M is in fact, theonly record company in Canada where thepublicity department does not operate underthe promotion department." referring, ofcourse, to the appointments of J.P. Guilbertand James Monaco to the respective positionsof Vice President of Promotion and VicePresident of Publicity (EC: A belated con-

gratulations to J.P. and Jim . . . !!) Nosooner had the ink dried on that issue andbeen delivered to 1810 Birchmount Road, when the phone rang . . . at approximately8:53 am. "Just to set the record straight,"barked Garry Newman, "Dave Tollington, who heads up our publicity department, hasn't been operating under the promotiondepartment since November of 1986. Hereports directly to the BIG man . . . " (EC: Avery belated congratulations to Dave . . . !!)

The sun will rise again on P.W.Hey, hey Toronto . . . get ready for the firstof what might be a national chain of '50snostalgia stores. Can you imagine . . . a storestocking the best of rock 'n' roll from the ear-ly days . . . the real days of rock? I unders-tand P.W. is coordinating this new brainchildof a very aggressive retailer. The first storewill be in downtown Toronto. Watch outVancouver, you might be next.

Words of wisdom ... !!In last week's RPM, CHUM -FM's WarrenCosford offered his Opinion on our recentBig Country Awards. Glory Days answers one of rock's 'big' questions Integral with success in the music business is

the ability to follow-up, to reach plateaus beyond what was once thought of as "your

previous best" and produce something bet- ter. For musicians, especially our rock 'n'

rollers, this seemingly insurmountable feat is

a constant source of irritation and personal struggle.

In order to achieve those heights, com- mercialism shines a bright path, and being considered that much more accessible is a

fear tantamount to "selling out" in the eyes of an adoring and admiring, yet jealously

cultish, following. Over the years though very few artists

have been able to transcend the various plateaus while still maintaining the values

they hold so true, without falling into a pit of obscurity forever; not being able to overcome

the feelings and emotions involved with such a task.

In our time, however, there is one par- ticular artist, a singer and a songwriter, who

has risen past the status of "cult" star to that of "rock" star, and with each passing

obstacle the process transformed a small town hero to an icon for his millions of fans

around the world. Eclipsing the many before him is Bruce

Springsteen; from Freehold to Asbury Park to Madison Square Garden over the relatively

short time frame of years is what all aspiring musician's dream are made of.

In the wake of his incredible success are the stories that simply must be told, not for

those fans who lined the streets for a Darkness tour ticket, but for those who

bought his Born In The USA album . . .

Spr- ingsteen's "new" fans. Glory Days, written by noted author and

personal friend of Springsteen, Dave Marsh, offers the reader tremendous insight into that

transformation (from the days of Nebraska to the release last November of his 5 -album

live set) and the changes inherent with such a dramatic rise in fame and fortune.

Although Marsh, while recently in Toronto promoting the book, admits his

sequel to Born To Run was not written for the "real" fans as much as it was written for

a "broader" cross-section of the populace, hence containing facts pre -Born In The USA

fans might deem as redundant, he adds it does describe scenes and actions no one could have known previously.

"The stories in the book are," he con- tinues, "for the most part, untold stories. People didn't know before this book came

out that Born In The USA was actually the first thing thrown off the Nebraska album

because it was too much of a protest song. And people don't know what CBS' reaction was unless they read this book."

Also, and at great length, the book details the differences in attitude and subse- quent atmosphere between Nebraska and Born In The USA, and why the latter was so

successful. "Born In The USA," Marsh explains,

"is a response to the same psychological and

social conditions that Nebraska is a response to, taking those two songs as songs. Nebraska

is mired in it, Born In The USA is a way of shaking that miasma of isolation and depres-

sion off. "For the first time Bruce let go and recorded the kinds of songs he had been giv-

ing away to other people that they were hav- ing success with. And he responded in a

creative way, with more modern rhythms like

on Dancing In The Dark, and I think that's what the record is about, which is what you

do when you're at the end of your rope, it's something both emotional and crucial to a lot

of people at that stage." Marsh, writer of five previous titles and

who has written for many periodicals and publications, says the reason for following Springsteen so closely (he first saw him play

at a Boston bar in 1974) was because of an inate survival factor he found present on that day.

"It seemed like he came and he wasn't going to go," Marsh recalls. "He was going

to survive and be productive in a 'whole' way. In the other books I've written, I looked back and just said 'Oh, I get it. It's all the same story. It's all trying to answer the same

question.' The question is 'Can you survive this and grow up?'

"I guess I wasn't going to take `No' for an answer. Bruce was the first person I met

who was like-minded on that subject and he seemed to have an effective way of dealing

with the issue, without abandoning rock 'n' roll but also without abandoning the more

CANADA'S ONLY NATIONAL 100 SINGLE SURVEY

COVER STORY- by Graeme Boyce

The Truth find the sound they were looking for

Currently enjoying an extensive U.S. tour with Eddie Money, and following a short run

of dates with Squeeze, are Mick Lister and Dennis Greaves, the founding members of

The Truth. They are also enjoying con- siderable chart success with their single and

album carrying the same title, Weapons Of Love.

Last year the pair, the surviving nucleus of the group, sent the other members packing

and decided to record their new album with friends of producer Dennis Herring. "When

we started demo-ing the new stuff," explains Lister, "that's when we found out it wasn't

working out with the old band. Personal dif- ferences, I suppose

. . . the usual thing."

After playing the new material to Myles Copeland of I.R.S. Records, the duo were

soon introduced to Herring; and subsequent- ly began recording at his studio in Los

Angeles. "With recording the album in his basement," Lister reasons, "it allowed us to

spend time and not money, which is impor-

tant at this stage. "Because on the first album,

Playground, we didn't quite find the direc- tion we wanted. I think it was because it real-

ly was like searching for our own sound real- ly. It's a good thing we had Dennis (Herring),

because," he continues, "when we were down in the basement we were able to focus

and find our own sound. "Being that Dennis is also a musician

and a producer, he would join the band and rehearse with us while we were down there.

He was good for that 'outside' point of view. He listens to the radio a lot and with us he

said the easiest trap to fall into was to get an album with all these big snares and guitar

sounds, like the way Bon Jovi sounds or Bryan Adams. Really, really big and over-

produced." Lister adds that they have "found" their

sound now and it will be something to work off for the next album. However, material for that project will be a while coming as the

No news is good news, but no news is bad news! They say that no news is good news, but here

in the music industry . . .

we know that no news is bad news. So, if I may indulge your

patience, I would like to present to you - Attic headlines

. . . and good news!

The Nylons are exploding all across North America. The hit single, Kiss Him

Goodbye, is bulleting up the Top 40 in both the U.S. and Canada. Moves at CKLG 29-27,

CKXL 27-26, CHAB 24-19, CKCK 22-14, CKPT 35-26, CKSL 18-17, CJBK 18-16, CFGO 37-34, and CKOI 48-44 assure the record of the same success in Canada that it is

currently enjoying in the states: 33 with a bullet in R&R, and 27 with a bullet in Gavin.

The Nylons are currently on a North American sold -out tour, playing to en- thusiastic audiences from New York to North

Battleford. Lee Aaron returns from her triumphant

tour. While playing to SRO halls throughout Europe, Lee's self -titled fourth LP has been racking up sales in Canada. So far, over 40,000 albums have already been sold and

now, with the release of Going Off The Deep End as the album's second single, and a

cross -Canada tour scheduled for this sum- mer, Lee is assured of her first gold LP,

which is proof that dedication pays off.

Jennifer Warnes on tour. In support of The Famous Blue Raincoat tour of Canada,

Attic Records is releasing Bird On A Wire as the third single from Jennifer Warnes'

platinum plus LP. The tour, which starts in Hamilton 6/12, Toronto 6/14, Montreal 6/18-19, Ottawa 6/21-22, and Quebec City

6/25, will include Western Canada in August. Phones tell the tale of the record. Strong

phones are reported by stations playing Joey Gregorash's Together (The New Wedding

Song). Those stations include CJCB, CJYQ, CFRA, CHUM AM, CFTR, CHFI, CKY, CHAB, CJAY, CHFM, CHED, CHEC, and CKRA. It's not surprising, since June is wed-

ding month. As a matter of fact, DJ's in Calgary have ordered 4,000 copies of the

single to show their support of the record. Canada's most popular VJ, Christopher

Ward is currently in the middle of a cross - Canada promo tour in support of his self

- titled EP which features the single, Boys And Girls. Early believers in the single include:

CHED, CHUM FM, CJBK, CFGO, CJFM, CKPG, CHIM, CKCK AND CHRK. The

video for Boys And Girls has been added straight into heavy rotation at MuchMusic.

band doesn't write while they're on the road, even though those chances have been few and

far between, since releasing their Playground album in 1985.

"We haven't had any problems playing the songs live," relates Lister. "I think that's

where Dennis and myself feel a lot more com- fortable than anywhere else. It's not really

the same as the album . . .

it's got a heckuva lot more energy live."

Among the many additional and guesting musicians to appear at the sessions

was Tikmbuk 3's Pat McDonald, who lends his harmonica talents. "That came about,"

comments Lister, "when we had done quite a few guitar solos and we thought the har-

monica would be a nice fresh sound for a song. Dennis phoned him up one day and he

just came down and had a blast."

But Lister actually admits at being sur- prised by the success of their single. He recalls sitting in a restaurant with Herring as

Timbuk 3 were climbing the charts with The Future's So Bright. "Dennis and I used to

look at each other and say `if only we could get into the Top 100,' and now we're up

there," he adds. "And we're prepared to work at it until we get some success."

Although he is unsure when they'll reach that plateau, he maintains that with this

album, "All we want to do is get a bit of recognition," and then begin work on their

follow-up. Their tour with Eddie Money is proving

to be quite an inspiration. He suggests, "The healthy part of a tour over here is the radio

stations, because there are so many of them compared to England, where it's led by Radio

One. When we're on our bus I think we're pretty spoiled."

From their early days, their "appren- ticeship stage", the band has come around to deliver one of this year's heartier rock 'n' roll efforts ("It's what the band is all about," Lister states.) that places them easily into the ranks of "a band to watch" in the forthcom-

ing months.

Boardwalk classic - new

single from Bruno album With the summer months conjuring up ideas

of the beach and sand, Motown has released Under The Boardwalk as the 3rd single from

the platinum -selling Bruce Willis debut, The Return Of Bruno. The New single follows the

previously released Young Blood and Respect Yourself, and features the Temptations on

backing vocals. A live video has also been released.

Says Cameron Carpenter, Motown's label manager in Canada, "We've also releas-

ed the theme to the show Moonlighting by Al Jarreau, and there's a Moonlighting album coming on MCA, with two new tracks from

Willis and a couple from Cybil Sheppard as well.

"The single is a little different than the theme song," he continues, "so it's not the

original. It's the same song, but it's his inter- pretation. On the album, it will have the television theme as well as the single." The Moonlighting album is expected for

release the latter part of July.

A "rousing" Bryan Adams' set, comprisingAnother Day, Run To You, Somebody, Vic-tim Of Love, Hearts On Fire, and (with DaveEdmunds) The Wanderer "had them dancingin the aisles," reports A&M's GeoffKulawick. He had just returned from Lon-don, England, where he, a MuchMusic crewand 22 contest winners witnessed the Prince'sTrust Concert at Wembley Stadium (June 5).

The annual extravaganza featured manyof today's top performers, including: EricClapton, Midge Ure, Ben E. King, EltonJohn, Phil Collins and Boy George. However, the obvious highlight was the ap-pearance of both George Harrison and RingoStarr, who, along with the "all star" band, performed While My Guitar Gently Weeps;,Here Comes The Sun, and I Get By With ALittle Help From My Friends, which servedas the finale.

"When you consider all that incredibletalent assembled on one stage," concludesKulawick, "and consider the fact they allplayed for free . . . well, it was just the spiritof the moment. I mean they weren't reallyplaying, they were giving . . . and when theydid the finale, it left an impression on methat'll last for the rest of my life."

Shuffle Demons areup for a CASBY

They are currently playing dates local-ly, before setting out across the country. These dates have included the El Mocambo,Lee's Palace, and Harbourfront (Boulevardof Broken Deams). After the CASBY's theywill play the Du Maurier Downtown JazzFestival in Toronto, (June 21-28), followedby the Montreal Jazz Festival (30), Harbour -front for the Canada Day celebrations, theVictoria Jazz Festival (July 2), the PacificJazz & Blues Festival in Vancouver (3-5),Festival d'ete du Quebec (16-17), the OttawaJazz Festival (21), back to Lee's Palace inToronto (24-25), and out to the EdmontonFolk Festival (Aug 7-9).

Adams plays longest set at Prince's Trust concert

A "rousing" Bryan Adams' set, comprising Another Day, Run To You, Somebody, Vic-

tim Of Love, Hearts On Fire, and (with Dave Edmunds) The Wanderer "had them dancing

in the aisles," reports A&M's Geoff Kulawick. He had just returned from Lon-

don, England, where he, a MuchMusic crew and 22 contest winners witnessed the Prince's

Trust Concert at Wembley Stadium (June 5). The annual extravaganza featured many

of today's top performers, including: Eric Clapton, Midge Ure, Ben E. King, Elton

John, Phil Collins and Boy George. However, the obvious highlight was the ap- pearance of both George Harrison and Ringo

Starr, who, along with the "all star" band, performed While My Guitar Gently Weeps;,

Here Comes The Sun, and I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends, which served

as the finale. "When you consider all that incredible

talent assembled on one stage," concludes Kulawick, "and consider the fact they all

played for free . . .

well, it was just the spirit of the moment. I mean they weren't really

playing, they were giving . . .

and when they did the finale, it left an impression on me that'll last for the rest of my life."

Shuffle Demons are up for a CASBY

Referred to as Toronto's "offbeat jazzniks", the Shuffle Demons, have been nominated for a Best Jazz Recording CASBY Award

(June 19). Their Streetniks album, which features seven of their originals, including Spadina Bus, their video clip, is close to the

5,000 units sold mark. The band was featured as part of the kick-off to A&A's Jazz Month with a record signing (June 12) at the downtown Toronto

store. They are currently playing dates local- ly, before setting out across the country.

These dates have included the El Mocambo, Lee's Palace, and Harbourfront (Boulevard

of Broken Deams). After the CASBY's they will play the Du Maurier Downtown Jazz

Festival in Toronto, (June 21-28), followed by the Montreal Jazz Festival (30), Harbour

- front for the Canada Day celebrations, the Victoria Jazz Festival (July 2), the Pacific

Jazz & Blues Festival in Vancouver (3-5), Festival d'ete du Quebec (16-17), the Ottawa

Jazz Festival (21), back to Lee's Palace in Toronto (24-25), and out to the Edmonton

Folk Festival (Aug 7-9).

tions for the transfer of distribution rights from I.V.E. Canada, a wholly owned Cana- dian subsidiary of MMC Video One Canada,

Rhino launches campaign to save Rhinos and LPs Richard Foos, President of the Santa Monica -based Rhino label is concerned about

the future'of "two species closest to its heart: Rhinos and Records." Rhino's Stan Becker points out "As cassette and compact disc

players become more and more prevalent, many record stores have all but abandoned

the format that the music industry was founded upon." He continues with, "To address this con-

cern, and to continue to serve the nation's (U.S.) 90 million turntable owners, Rhino

Records has joined forces with Rhino Rescue USA, a charitable organization dedicated to

preserving the endangered and rapidly diminishing wild rhinoceros, in order to save

two of the world's most beloved yet en- dangered species: Rhinos and vinyl."

To this, Foos adds, "As a label, we've always had immense respect for the history of

pop music and I think it would be a shame to lose contact with the traditional vinyl

record." The label, known for its archival efforts

in re -issuing the classic music from the '50s and '60s, is planning a special promotion

designed to garner support for what Becker describes as "the format that singlehandedly

built the recording industry." The company is offering record dealers throughout the U.S.

discounts on all of its LPs, as well as pro- viding them with Save the LP kits, consisting

of T-shirts, bumper stickers, pins and other p.o.p material. They will also be donating a

portion of the proceeds from each record sold during the July 6th through 31st promotion

Factor/CTL funding for 13 Factor/CTL has announced that 13 new

talent demo awards have been awarded for the month of April. The new artists receiving

studio time for the production of their demos are Select Few, Styell, J.M.B., David

Turkstra, Epsilon, Paul Coburn, Lynn Lamarche, Lindsay West, Bruce Coughlan,

Joe McDonald, Barry McLoughlin, Maxine Willan, Alan Gerber, and The Red.

Studios selected to particpate in the new talent awards for April are: Comfort Sound, Triton Sound, Grant Avenue, Video Sound

Studios, Cherry Beach Studio, Enormus Sound, Phase One Recording, Inside Track Studio, Midnight Sounds, Perceptions,

Karisma, and Triton Sound. The studios participating in this project

make their facilities available for 24 to 32 hours of studio time and include tape

engineer costs. The finished demo tape is the property of the artists who receive the award.

It has been pointed out that the number of applications to the Factor/CTL program

has risen "substantially." The press release goes on to report that

"Recently completed evaluations in Van- couver, Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon,

will produce even more applicants from across the country."

Interest from the Atlantic Seaboard is also showing results from the organization's "in -person promotion tour". It's expected

there will be several new studios participating as the numbers of applications continue to ar-

rive from the Atlantic Provinces.

to Rhino Rescue USA. "This is a serious call -to -arms," cau-

tioned Harold Bronson, Managing Director of Rhino Records. "It's time to focus on

preserving the endangered elements in our in- ternational culture. Somewhere on the

African plains, things might be a little more sane because, rhino to rhino, we're reaching out with rock 'n' roll."

Rhino is perhaps best known in Canada as the release label for Billy Vera & The

Beaters. Their By Request LP was certified as gold in the May certifications by CRIA. The label is distributed in Canada by Trend

Records.

THE CURE Rock/PopKiss Me ... Elektra -96.07371-PGive the band credit for their perseverancebecause this is the album that's going to do itfor them (although notwithstanding their '1,

previous releases, which both went gold inCanada). As a result of the band's many me.atie inputs and styles, keenly displayer! overthe years, this album is actually a showcaseof their collective talents, and not a gumbo ofhaphazard song selections. Given the first singlechoice, Why Can't I Be You, the album nowtrees the band to dime any direction theydesire, no longer trapped in any one particularmusical genre, as that single might indicate 2"typical" Cure sound. ANITA PERRAS & TIM TAYLOR CountryAnita & Tim Savannah - SRL-9829.NYnu can set aside the myth that artists makepoor lovers - in the case of Anita and Tim, inany event. This husband and wife team havenot only managed to stay happily married, butthey are both capable of releasing hit records. They are on the charts at present with theirsolo singles, included on this Mike Francisproduction, Anita with I've Found SomeoneToo, and Tim with Say When. Also containsseveral of their Top 20 single releases alongwith Anita's Heads You Win (Tails I Lose),which went Top 10. Exceptional instrumentalbacking by Eric Robertson on keyboards, andsteel work by Bob Lucier and Steve 'Smith.Francis also doubles on acoustic and electricguitars. Lawrence O'Tooleof the Globe & Mail wrote "Shirley's voice isall her own, imitative of none, with a strengththat vibrates in the space around." Right on,and the strength in the recording is just asevident as with her live performance. Eikhardwrote most of the material, and teamed withMadeline Stone and Chris Waters to write You'reMy Weakness, the first single taken from thisset. This isn't the strongest track on the album, but it's not bad and does point up the crossoverpotential. There's a keen edge to the Eikhardvocals, something that was missing in her earlierdays. Anita & Tim's new LP released The Savannah people are excited about the

release of the debut album from Anita Perras and Tim Taylor, which is simply titled Anita

& Tim. The album, produced by Mike Fran- cis at Toronto's Inception Sound, contains

several of their Top 20 singles releases, in- cluding their latest solo efforts, I've Found

Someone Too, by Perras, and Say When, by Taylor. Also featured on the album are 4

duets, including their next single, Isn't That The Strangest Thing.

Mercey Brothers finish single session The Mercey Brothers were in the recording

studio recently to put the finishing touches on a new single titled Raised By The Radio. This

single marks the start of a new album. They had much success with their last album, Love

Is The Reason, which spawned 6 Top 10

singles for them on the RPM Country 60.

Our Love is hot for Ellis Family Our Love, the latest single from The Ellis

Family Band, has scored chart numbers and playlist adds across the country. One of the

first to chart the single was CHAM in Hamilton, where it has moved up quite nice-

ly. Writes Dale Lyon of CKCL Truro, "Another sure hit

. . . our listeners love it."

Phil Kallsen of Calgary's CKRY-FM, says "Good release

. . . getting great phone action

on it." Says Paul Magee of Q93 Charlot- tetown, "I really believe this is the best one

yet," and Wade Willey of Regina's CKRM echoes these comments with "Great Song".

GBM release for Ricky Wells Response has been encouraging for Ricky

Wells on the release of his debut for GBM titled In And Out Of Love. The single was

produced by Brenden Gillam, and written by bassist Rick Cleveland. Other musicians on

the Orchard Studio session were Joey May (keyboards), Steve Billins (drums), Wendell

Ferguson (guitars), with background vocals supplied by Debbie Lee Michaels. Wells also supplied background as well as lead vocals.

GBM is distributed in Canada by BMG Music Canada.

CRTC reaffirms decisionThe CRTC has reaffirmed a decision permit-ting CFGM Richmond Hill to change its fre-quency from 1320 kHz to 640 kHz. This deci-sion also allows the station to change thelocation of its transmitter from Mississaugato Beamsville. The original decision washanded down in June of 1986 when the Com-mission approved the application byWestcom Radio Group, operators of CFGM.

However, it was pointed out in a com-munication from the CRTC, dated June 2,1987, that this decision "will only take effectwhen Westcom has filed with the CRTC

Russwurm and friends setfor CKGL JamboreeSummerfest '87, a giant Jamboree reunionwill be presented by Kitchener's CKGL96.7FM at the Bingeman Park Ballroom(Aug. 2). Emceeing the show will be JohnnyBrent, Tim Denis, Randy Owen, and Hoppy.

The Jamboree Reunion Band, which willbe the centre of attention, was put togetherlast year by Lynn Russwurm, a veteran oftraditional country music. The bandmembers, who go back 30 or 40 years, exceptfor the drummer, Gerry Boppre, who has on-ly been at it for 25 years, are steelman LloydBank, Victor Pasowisty on fiddle, andguitarists Lorne Prince and Russwurm.

Russwurm has put together an album, released on the Binge label, titled The SongsOf Lynn Russwurm Performed by VariousCanadian Artists. The tracks were recordedover a period of time from 1961 through1965, and include performances by EarlHeywood, Stan Taylor, Bruce West, TomGibbons & Bill Szasz, "Rocky" Bilodeau,Carl Kuhn, and Russwurm himself who tookon the bass chores for most of the sessionswhich were cut in either Kitchener orWaterloo. Interestingly enough the 1964/65recording of Staying At Home With TheBlues, performed by Russwurm, lists a coupleof very young Mercey Brothers as sessionplayers: Larry on lead guitar, and Ray onelectric bass.

Other acts sharing the lineup at Sum-merfest '87 include Gary Buck, Graham andEleanor Townsend, Tom Destry, Doc andChickie Williams, Bonnie and Bob Baker,"Rocky" Bilodeau (one of the artists onRusswurm's album), and more.

The Commission held a Public Hearingin the Town of Lincoln, which includesBeamsville (Mar. 3), where 30 of the 78 in-terested parties who had sent submissions tothe CRTC, appeared. There were a numberof issues addressed, including the use ofagricultural land, the possibility that otherToronto stations might also want to install

transmitters in the area, the potential in-terference that might be caused by thetransmitters, the potential effects of elec-tromagnetic energy on crops, aesthetic andhealth concerns, and notification procedures. The Commission will examine this latter issueduring the review of its Rules of Procedurelater this year.

In making the decision, the Commissionnoted that "while the Department of Com-munications regulates the technicalparameters of broadcasting proposals, theCommission would appear to be the 'court oflast resort' for local residents to make knowntheir concerns."

farewell to the youth and innocence of his past, all of which is brilliantly and

chronologically detailed on his live set. "Yet the song he thought was most im- portant," Marsh concludes, "and obviously I

do too, in telling this story, the song that summarizes the whole story isn't on the

record, which is Glory Days. But as Bruce said: 'Hey, I've got my complaints too!' "

CIGV-FM gears up for Canadian Showcase '87

It's that time again when CIGV-FM Pentic- ton gets ready for their Canadian Showcase

(Canada Day -

July 1) when they will present 24 hours of Cancon country music.

"This year marks our 6th showcase as a special feature," says the station's Music

Director Carl W. Harris, "and as a special feature we will have a Salute to the

Songwriters. The idea here is to use Canadian songs performed by an international country artist. I am sure there are many interesting stories to tell by Canadian composers."

Harris continues with "I would also like to say thanks to all the Canadian artists,

songwriters, musicians, producers, etc. for the large selection of material received at GV

Radio that gives me the opportunity to select that unique blend of country that has helped

make our station such a success."
