Judges CritiqueI would like to thank the Cruft’s committee for inviting me to judge the show. Also thanks to Mrs Milford & Mrs Dunkleyfor stewarding.

To the exhibitors, thank you for showing your lovely dogs under me. A significant number were not clean. Curiously thisjudging appointment, I had no end of trouble looking at mouths. Don’t bait your dogs at this point.

It was a delight to use the space in the Cruft’s ring – you’re all wonderfully fit!

The influence of the big kennels who by creating breeding strains giving identifiable type has now very much diminishedwithin the show ring. Many of the entry were conformationally correct but had no stamp of type & quality that made themstand out in their class.

Size is an issue we have to face – the standard says 23”-24” for dogs and 22”-23” for bitches, with the modifier that“overall balance of prime importance”, but does that mean 26”+ well balanced dog is acceptable? Where will it end?Already the 24” dogs are being described as small – clearly this is not so. This is poor judging, the K.C. requires judgesto have a comprehensive knowledge of the K.C. Breed Standard and place the dogs on merit according to the breedstandard.

If however you/we feel the standard is wrong then perhaps it should be changed to reflect a larger Dalmatian, say24”-25” for dogs and 22”-24” for bitches.

What do you all want? Let’s have some discussions! Standards can be improved.

Lumber is another issue connected with increased hight. I really noticed today how many bitches carry lumber – just tooheavily built all round. Quite a number would have competed in the dog ring. Bigger is not better.

How sad that dogs & bitches who are standard size are judged by many as being small.

I enjoyed watching handlers showing their dods on loose leads. A strung up dog has his conformation altered especiallyon the move – his head may be in the “wrong place” in relation to his body.

Give loose lead showing a try, it is rewarding.

Yes you might feel the need to get the lead & collar up and out of the way but if you are not trying to hide anything whybother (no throatiness here today!).

You are in control of your dog (incidentally – aren’t you) so why strangle him.

Veteran Dog 8 (2 abs)1 Taylor & MacKinnon’s Ch. Frankish Desert Trouper black spotted – have awarded him a CC before and he did notdisappoint today – lovely head and spotted ears, dark eye, good neck and shoulders, deep brisket, level topline, excellent spotting, strong bone
