Tonight at 6:30, is our Parent Orientation Night so much of what is new will be included there. I do want to include a few basic reminders for the year in this message. For the next few weeks the school office will be staffed by Dawn Lambrecht. Dawn is filling in for JoAnn Schmidt for the immediate future. Also, Amy Stauffer will be filling in for Amanda Hansen in the lunch program. Tonight we will meet the teacher who will replace Mrs. Wittig later in the year. She is Megan Leverence. The yellow striped area by the doors at the mid-level parking lot is reserved for people dropping off or picking up students AND students who are old enough to get into the car and put their own seatbelts on without parental aid. If you need to help your child put the belt on, please park and pick up your children. The parking lot is a busy place when 200+ students enter/exit in the 15 minute period of time that eighty cars drive in to pick them up. Please drive slowly. Also, students should not cross the street without teacher or parent assistance. If you choose to park on Dewey Avenue and wait, please pull forward to the street sign to allow others to enter and exit from our parking lot safely. In the morning before the students are allowed in the building, they cannot be dropped off and left to play in the parking lot. This creates safety and supervision issues we are trying to avoid. Please keep your child in the car until 7:40. If they come to the door and wait for a minute or two because your clock and the school bell system are not in sync, that is not a problem. Some students walk or ride bikes at this time of the year and their arrival cannot be perfectly timed. Finally, we have a number of new families and students. Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself to new people to make new friends and help new people feel welcome. We’re off to a great start this year!! ~Mr. Uecker~

Parent Orientation Meeting Tonight 6:30PM in the gym!

From the Principal’s Desk

Greetings, Welcome to a new school year!

Tonight at 6:30, is our Parent Orientation Night so much of what is new will be included there. I do want to include a few basic

reminders for the year in this message. For the next few weeks the school office will be staffed by Dawn Lambrecht. Dawn is filling

in for JoAnn Schmidt for the immediate future. Also, Amy Stauffer will be filling in for Amanda Hansen in the lunch program. Tonight we will

meet the teacher who will replace Mrs. Wittig later in the year. She is Megan Leverence. The yellow striped area by the doors at

the mid-level parking lot is reserved for people dropping off or picking up students AND students who are old enough to get into the car

and put their own seatbelts on without parental aid. If you need to help your child put the belt on, please park and pick up your children.

The parking lot is a busy place when 200+ students enter/exit in the 15 minute period of

time that eighty cars drive in to pick them up. Please drive slowly. Also, students should not cross the street without teacher or parent

assistance. If you choose to park on Dewey Avenue and wait, please pull forward to the street sign to allow others to enter and exit

from our parking lot safely. In the morning before the students are allowed in the building, they cannot be dropped

off and left to play in the parking lot. This creates safety and supervision issues we are trying to avoid. Please keep your child in

is not a problem. Some students walk or ride bikes at this time of the year and their arrival cannot be perfectly timed.

Finally, we have a number of new families and students. Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself to new people to make

new friends and help new people feel welcome. We’re off to a great start this year!!

School Doors

A reminder that the school doors, both mid and lower level doors will be opened at 7:40am each morning. Children arriving prior to

7:40am should check in to Childcare. Please contact [email protected] for more

information.

Thank You Thank you to our school cleaning volunteers! We got so many things checked

off the list to get the school ready for the kids this week. As always, we could not do it without so many dedicated parents helping us get the

jobs done. Thank you also to our teen volunteers who helped with some heavy lifting

jobs. We appreciate all the help everybody took the time to give. ~Mrs. Leyrer

Usher Assistants Each week beginning on Unity Sunday students, in grades 5-8, whose families are

members of St. John’s Church are assigned to hand out “News and Notes” following the 8 AM

and 10:30 AM services. The children are to go to the rear of the church during the announcements and the ushers will give them

these handouts. The names will be printed each week here in the Chronicle. If you will not

be at church on your assigned Sunday or time, it is your responsibility to find a substitute.

Parents’ Preview The Parents’ Preview highlights an aspect of next week’s service: a liturgical song, a Psalm refrain, or a hymn stanza. Our hope and prayer is that parents will teach this portion of the service to their children at home during the week so that children can participate more fully in the worship service.

Parents’ Preview for September 3

“Thank the Lord”

In “Thank the Lord,” sung immediately after communion, the

congregation expresses thanks for

the forgiveness of sins imparted in Holy Communion. We

rejoice and sing the praises of our God.

Each week the Chronicle will

contain this “Preparing for Sunday” section. The passages listed will be the readings for the Saturday/Sunday

services. It is our hope that each of you will set aside time to read and prepare personally

or as a family for Sunday worship services.

Saturday/Sunday Scripture Readings

The scripture readings for this week’s services are:

The First Lesson: Exodus 14:10-31 Psalm 73

The Second Lesson: Romans 9:1-5

The Gospel Lesson: Matthew 14:22-33 Sermon theme: Rooted

Our first semester Mission project involves

helping three areas:

Food Pantry Illumine Lutheran Church

Abiding Grace- Georgia

The Food Pantry effort will run all school year. Collection will take place in the new big box in the Narthex as we enter church on the first

Sunday of the month (except September, which is Unity Sunday). Items needed are: Dry

cereal, rice, instant potatoes, pasta, canned vegetables and fruit, canned soup, canned tuna or stew, jello, and pudding. These items will

then be distributed on the second Saturday of the month at Christ Lutheran Church. When

you are out shopping, help your child select an item or two to share with those in need. Each classroom will “adopt” a month to make a

special effort to fill our box. Watch for details. Illumine Lutheran Church and Abiding

Grace —our Sunday collection envelopes for this semester will go to help these missions. This past summer forty teens and ten

chaperones went to these churches to help with the VBS science and technology camps. A

weekly reminder and update will be in the Crusader Chronicle. Watch for bulletin board display outside the gym to show progress.

May God bless our efforts to carry out our mission to “proclaim the gospel message.”

Hot Lunch You can now access the school hot lunch page

on the website: www.sjtosa.org/HotLunch or through a link on the Parent Resource page.

In an effort to simplify the Lunch Ticket process at St. John’s, we have “Family Lunch

Account” rather than a per/student ticket count. Any payments to Hot Lunch will be

deposited into your family account and the cost of lunches consumed by all children in that family will be deducted from that same account

at the end of the week. WE ASK THAT ALL FAMILIES KEEP A POSITIVE BALANCE IN

THEIR LUNCH ACCOUNT. We will be working with a “total dollar amount” for each family. We believe this will be easier for everyone involved.

The cost of lunches remains the same at $3/lunch and $1/extra entrée.

All payments to hot lunch must be put in a “Hot Lunch Order Form” envelope and placed in the wooden box located in the

school office or Childcare Room. Please make checks payable to “St. John’s.” New this

year you can arrange for an EFT with Sharon Kieselhorst in the church office. If you purchased milk at registration, your

child will have the choice of white (1% or skim) or chocolate milk at lunch whether they eat hot

lunch or bring a lunch from home. If you purchased one milk for your child and they

decide that they would like two milks, the cost will be $15 for an additional milk for the entire school year (or 25 cents per carton.)

Babysitter Directory We are once again printing a Babysitting Directory for all St. John’s families who may be in need of babysitting services. Any students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade, who would like to be included in this directory and have not yet handed in the information form, please turn it into the school office. Extra copies of the form can be found on the table outside the school office.

It is a whirlwind of firsts for 22 new K3 students coming to preschool. They are very

excited about meeting new friends and are adjusting very well to our classroom routines

and rules. We are getting to know each other through play and our circle time activities. The children are actively exploring each

learning center in our classroom and the playground. The kitchen area, play dough

table, and construction site are favorites so far. The children also enjoyed identifying and saying the first letter of their name as the

word whammer sang a special song for their letter. They will practice finding their first

letter and putting it on our apple bulletin board. We enjoyed a book about treating books with care and one about starting school

for the first time. We learned about a circle and discovered a semi-circle, as well as the

colors red, purple, and blue. The children enjoyed sharing about their summer

activities.

[email protected]) and we need volunteers to run our booth and sell the extra chili and

cupcakes (contact Pastor Bitter at [email protected]). Hope to see you there!
