Jr. Choir/Jr. Handbell Fellowship Time Between Services Dear Jr. Choir/Jr. Handbell Families,

Many of you will recall a few years back

how the choir students were hosted at school

in between services for fellowship time and

snacks. I am happy to report that we will

be reinstituting this practice starting

this Sunday, January 22. Students will

gather in the commons area after dismissal

from the 8 AM service and enjoy time to hang

out and chat, while enjoying delicious

treats and drinks. I asked Melissa Gregory

to coordinate the refreshments; any parents

who are willing to help out (by providing or

serving said refreshments) should contact

Melissa at her

email, [email protected], to make

sure we will have adequate

supplies. Parents are welcome to join in

the fellowship in the school commons, or

take part in our Bible Study hour. This

Parents’ Preview The Parents’ Preview highlights an aspect of next week’s service: a liturgical song, a Psalm refrain, or a hymn stanza. Our hope and prayer is that parents will teach this portion of the service to their children at home during the week so that children can participate more fully in the worship service.

Parents’ Preview for January 22nd

“Glory to God” After receiving forgiveness in the absolution, the congregation

responds by praising the goodness of God and his eternal Word

in the Gloria. This refrain is based on the song of the angels on

the night of Jesus’ birth from Luke 2:14.

Ministry Sunday, so the 9:15 AM session will

be our annual “state of the parish”

presentation—a great chance to get a full

rundown of what all the various ministries

at St. John’s accomplished in 2016, and also

what is planned for this calendar

year. We’d love to have you!

Thanks to all who make Junior Choir such a

Women’s Bible study (“RIBS”): The new year is a great time to join us because we are starting a new study, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney. This book will guide us through a carefully selected array of disciplines, illustrating why the disciplines are important, showing how each one will help us grow in godliness, and offering practical suggestions for cultivating them. Join us Wednesday mornings from 8:30 to 10:00 in the Fellowship Hall (in the church basement). Fellowship begins at 8:00 and childcare is available. Contact Monica Gnat at [email protected] or (414) 774-6180 for more information.

"The Over-booked Child” Monday, January 30th, 6:30pm St. John's Faculty & CES Presents A Parent Seminar on Monday, January 30, 2017, 6:30-8:00pm in the church Fellowship Hall. Dr. Holtz has a career background in education, child and family psychology. He is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology at WLC and has received numerous awards during his training. Please join us for this informative seminar, learning how we can keep our families schedules balanced. Refreshments will be provided.

Lost & Found Often times there are items in the Lost & Found that people don’t even realize they are missing, so be sure to check St. John’s Lost & Found bins on a regular basis. Lower Level: We have a “Lost and Found” bin for the lower level. It is located next to the door leading out to the playground. All items left in childcare or anywhere on the lower level will be placed in this bin. Main Level: Lost & Found items can regularly be found in the “Lost & Found” bin which is located in the southwest corner of the commons, just past the Athletic Trophy case.

Mission and Ministry Sunday

Mission and Ministry Sunday is January 22. St. John’s has a special “state of the parish” presentation that will take place between services in the Fellowship Hall. This is a perfect opportunity to hear about what has been happening at St. John’s during 2016 and what is to come. A fellowship meal will be provided after second service. (FYI: This will not be a pot-luck, but served similar to the way our Advent & Lenten meals are served.) A special thank you to the group of volunteers who are helping prepare and serve this luncheon. A free-will offering will be collected to benefit the Lau fund.

Piano Lessons Piano with Mrs. Horton: This week Mrs. Horton’s piano students in grades 5-8 should have brought home registration forms for the WLHS Piano Festival. Please check their folders if you haven’t seen it. It is very important that parents of students involved in ensemble work (duets, trios) communicate with each other if you need to request a specific performance times due to other commitments. All WLHS forms should be returned to Mrs. Horton with payment by February 6th & 7th. Mrs. Horton will not have lessons on Jan 23 & 24 and Jan 30 & 31. Her lessons will resume February 6 & 7. Keep Practicing!

Piano with Mrs. Bortulin: Another great week of piano. It's exciting to hear more kids getting ready for the Wisco Piano Festival and playing for chapel. Remind kids to keep bringing those folders and all their books to each lesson, even if they didn't have an assignment in one. Thanks!

State Tax Deduction for Private School Tuition The state of Wisconsin allows you to deduct private school tuition for K5-8th grade as well as high school. (For most families, preschool tuition may also be deductible in a different category. Please check with your tax professional for more details.) These savings are not just for those who itemize. To make use of this deduction you will need the Federal ID number of St. John’s. The required Schedule PS (with our school address and tax number filled in) is available in the school office.

St. John’s 2016 Church Contribution Statements as well as 2016 Tuition Statements will be mailed

this week. Please contact Sharon in the church office if you have questions regarding this information.

Discovery Day Excitement is brewing as CES plans St. John’s 2017 Discovery Day. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 24th and watch for more information, as many parent volunteers are needed for this all-day event.

Wisconsin Lutheran High School 5th Grade Extravaganza Attention all 5th grade students and parents! Wisconsin Lutheran High School is hosting a 5th Grade Extravaganza just for you on Sunday, January 29, 5:30–7:30 p.m. The evening is free and includes dinner and a fun night of entertainment. Plus, we’re giving away an iPad and other prizes! We’ll have exciting science experiments, robot demonstrations, music, basketball and lots more. To reserve your spot, contact WLHS.

Forensic Volunteers Needed The forensic season for the 5th & 6th graders is around the corner! The students are being introduced to forensics in class with Mrs. Rindfleisch. Since this is their first or second experience with forensics, it is important for them to have coaching and practice. Therefore, I’m looking for 6

Childcare / Preschool / K5 Open House

Our Childcare and Preschool and Kindergarten Open House is scheduled for Sunday, February 5th from 11:30-1:00pm. This is an opportunity for parents with children who will be 3, 4 or 5 by September 1, 2017 to visit the school and meet the staff. Our preschool programs fill up quickly. If you know of anyone interested in our preschool programs, please check with the office for more details. At 1:30 PM following the open house, we will host a Kindergarten Parent Orientation meeting for parents who have expressed an interest in enrolling their child in our Kindergarten program, and have not previously attended this meeting. This meeting will be held in the school Lecture room on the lower level. Detailed letters were sent home. If you did not receive this information, please contact the school office. Though this Open House is geared toward our families with younger children, it is also the perfect time for families with potential students in any grade to visit and gather information regarding St. John’s educational programs.

Childcare News There have been some changes in childcare. Mrs. Kristen McEvoy has decided to leave St. John’s to pursue other opportunities. She has been a long time employee at St. John’s, filling many roles but most recently she has been on our childcare staff. She will be missed by all the children and staff and we pray God blesses her in her new position. Alex Scheibe will now be working in morning childcare everyday along with her evening childcare duties. We also have another new face. Miss Brianna Pollesch joined our after school staff. She will be working with upper grades as well as our little ones. Many of you I’m sure are familiar with Miss Pollesch as she is a former student at St. John’s. She will be graduating WLHS this spring and feels God is leading her to a path in working with children.

Parking along Harwood Avenue If you are parking along Harwood Avenue for drop-off or pick-up, please do not block the walkway from the street to the sidewalk. Thank you for your consideration.

enthusiastic volunteers who like to hang out with 5th and 6th graders. You need to be willing to help the students practice by listening to their selections and offer feedback. This would take place during the school day for six weeks starting of Feb. 6 thru March 17. I need 6 awesome volunteers! Please contact Mrs. Henning ([email protected]) if you are able to help support our students in this way. Thanks!

K3 News The doctor’s office in our theme corner has been very busy this week. The children have enjoyed dramatic play as doctors, pharmacists, nurses, x-ray technicians, and parents bringing their babies in for well check-ups or patients in need of care. They especially liked bandaging, using the stethoscope and otoscope, giving immunizations, writing out prescriptions, filling their prescription at the pharmacy, and having x-rays taken. Some excellent picture books in our ‘waiting room’ helped us learn about our skeleton, brain, heart, bones, muscles, and skin. We have also had a toy hospital, ambulance, and “flight for life” helicopter. The children used blocks to build a hospital room where they arrange all the equipment used for the care of the patient. We enjoyed reading a book about visiting the doctor. Ocean animals have been our new theme. We learned about whales, sharks, and dolphins this week using our wonderful books. The children have been very eager to play in our two fishing centers. We have a diorama set up with ocean creatures. The children enjoy pretending/telling stories with these creatures. Our puzzles, a fishing game, and a shell game complete the new activities we have at play time. We have learned that Jesus wants us to go and tell others about His great love and forgiveness through the Bible lesson, “Jesus Helps His Friends Catch Fish”. With our songs, prayers, and actions, we are learning to share Jesus’ love.

WLHS Hosts Blood Drive - January 25 The Student Council of Wisconsin Lutheran is

partnering with Bloodcenter of Wisconsin to host a blood drive on Wednesday, January 25. Consider that patients in local hospitals use about 800 units of blood every day, and that these patients rely heavily on the participation and leadership of sponsors in our community. About half of that amount is collected at Bloodcenter's 12 donor centers, but the other half must be collected through local drives like ours. To find out more about becoming a blood donor, click here. If you would like to donate at WLHS on January 25, please contact Mr. Roger Festerling at [email protected] or 414-453-45667 ext. 2222 to make an appointment.
