THIRD BRIGADE actualBDR John Johnston, SFMC

Good day, Marines! Welcome, friends! There have been a lot of moving and shaking this last month, so I will cut to the chase.

The 3rd Brigade Staff has been hard at work getting things ready for this year's Summit and Marine Muster. The staff is hard at work on making a more simplified S-Shop, creating a new website, and organizing awards and presentations for the Muster.

The S-Shop is being reorganized to make the offices easier to understand their individual functions. Each S-Staff position will have a clear definition with properly assigned duties. This will be discussed during the Marine Muster.

This year’s Brigade Awards have been chosen, and certificates will be presented during the Muster. The Valor Awards will be presented during the Awards Banquet Saturday night.

The Color Guard will begin work on their drill and ceremony for presentation during Opening Ceremonies on Saturday morning at the Summit. Be there, or you will miss out.

Well, it’s time for me to get back to work. That is all.

BDR John JohnstonOIC, 3rd BDE SFMC

AIDE DE CAMP - -LTC Michael Tolleson, SFMC

Greetings Marines,

This is your new Aide-De-Camp Major Lieutenant Colonel Michael Tolleson. I would like to thank you for giving me the chance to serve as the Aide. I plan to make things easier for all, I hope. However, I can be a very large pain in the butt when I need to. So let’s start this off good. I also can be a pretty good guy from what I’ve been told. Some of you know me and hope that I meet all at some point or another. Now down to business. First, as my predecessor has stated “staff members are here for more than just occupying space”. So with that in mind, let’s get some volunteers and get our staff positions filled and up to full strength. We need articles for the BDE newsletter “The Cry Havoc”. This is your newsletter, without you there is no brigade and no newsletter. So get those articles in. The article can be about anything of interest to you. Make it easier to write.Next is Communication! We have a lack of that here and I want to fix that. I and the other staff members are here to help with what we can. You can write about anything you want, movies you have watched, projects you are working on, project the BDE could be participating in. On that note remember all Unit OIC’s and BN OIC’s must submit something. You can use your unit activities from your MSR’s to send in.And last but not least let’s all have fun. This organization was made to have that and I think some have forgotten that point. We can all have fun show our enthusiasm of Sci-fi and Star Trek.

In service,Michael Tolleson, Lieutenant Colonel3BDE ADC

BRIGADE S administration officer-1LTC Dan Dreesbach, SFMC

The time is coming up for School to end within the next month. While you plan for your family members to have some fun, please remember to include safety in your plans. Be sure to drink a lot of liquids while participating outside. If going on a road trip, put some snacks in the car. A prime example of this are the Canadians The Chretian family who got lost out west while traveling on the country roads. A recommendation from this office is to stay on the main roads until you get have a need for the back roads to get there. This limits the initial search area needed if you are lost.

Another safety issue is to wear safety equipment while boating. Life jackets can keep you afloat if you hit your head and helps to identify you with a brightly designed jacket so you are visible to others. If you are diving, there are diving flags and flotation devices that mark that there is some one underwater at your location. If you are doing whitewater rafting, there is safety equipment available for you to use.

Now, onto our work. 1LT Kelley, as a member of both this team and the USS Lonestar, the host chapter for this year's summit, will be leading the Color Guard detail. It should be a good one! Our Brigade Commander, BDR Johnston, has donated a sizable chunk of change to purchase materials to build two sci-fi looking rifles for Color Guard use. Not cannon Trek phaser rifles...but those damn things are rather expensive. These should get us by for now, and are currently in production. They will be ready in time for Summit. Also in equipment, a 3rd flag pole has been procured for the Region, and will be making its maiden voyage at Summit!

Next year's Summit will be a joint Summit with Region 3 and Region 2; as such the 3rd Brigade Honor guard shall be working with those of 2nd Brigade for some extra special Color Guard details... and who knows what else!

As always, we stand ready to advise, perform or lead your ceremonial drill needs... you've but to ask! Or if you'd like to join this band of misfits that think Military style drill is great fun, please let us know!

In service, Jeremy Carsten, COL3rd Brigade Honor Guard [email protected]

Cry Havoc! editor

http://web.me.com/tank.clark

Ahoy. Marines!

As you may know, I’m mainly an “Original Series” kind of guy. I was introduced to Star Trek very early in my life -- my father bought our color TV because he’d found out that Star Trek was in color -- and I grew up watching TOS. I was “the right age” for Star Trek: The Animated Series, too... many of my favorite shows at that time were cartoons.

Upon further reflection, many of my favorites now are cartoons. I don’t know what, if anything, that means. “Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.” Anyway...

I was already “grown up” and living overseas (thanks to Uncle Sam’s Canoe Club, a.k.a. the United States Navy) when Star Trek: The Next Generation came out. It wasn’t being broadcast on any of the four TV stations available in London, UK at the time, so I rented the VCR tapes as they became out. The movie rental place only got the first four episodes... so it wasn’t until 1989 that I started watching new Trek episodes weekly. I missed a lot, I know... but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all the TNG episodes now.

Page 10: Cry Havoc!4 of 24 AIDE-DE-CAMP LTC Michael Tolleson, SFMC Greetings Marines, This is your new Aide-De-Camp Major Lieutenant Colonel Michael Tolleson. I would like to …

10 of 24

Why all this background? Just to explain why I’ve “lived”, joyfully, mainly in the Original Series, the Animated Series, and the first six movies. Don’t get me wrong -- I’ve enjoyed TNG & Voyager, and what I’ve seen of DS9 (yes, there’s still a lot of that series I haven’t seen yet. That’s a long story, and not very much fun to tell) but it’s not my focus. I also liked Enterprise, but again, it wasn’t -- and isn’t -- my favorite Trek.

Oh, I know... I'm wearing an Insurrection/DS9 SFMC uniform in my picture. Again, it's not that I don't like anything after Kirk... it's just that I have a fondness, and a preference, for everything TOS.

Take the whole thing with the TNG Klingons. I know they got their ridges in Star Trek The Motion Picture (or, as I often lovingly call it, “The Motionless Picture”), but the impression I got of them was different than the representation of Klingons in TNG. The NextGen Klingons always seemed to be something along the lines of “Samurai Viking Bikers From Outer Space” -- not that there’s anything wrong with that -- rather than the coldly aggressive Kang, Koloth, or Kor from TOS.

If you haven’t read it already, please read “The Final Reflection” by John M. Ford. Captain Krenn is the type of Klingon I recognize from my youth, and the type I prefer. Again, I don’t have a problem with Worf, Gowron, or Martok -- I just enjoy the more subtle nemesis of the Classic Klingon.

So, how about you? What’s your thoughts? Why not write in and tell me, and (if there’s any responses) I’ll publish it in an upcoming issue of Cry Havoc! YOUR brigade’s newsletter.

qatlho,(which I’m told means “thank you” in klingonaase)

BN REPORT2COL Jeremy Carsten, SFMC OIC 2BN

Greetings Marines!

So I've done a little homework... and perhaps learned something I should have looked into when I applied for this post (but really, who looks before they leap?). It seems that Everything really is bigger in Texas...at least as far as Battalions are concerned. 2BN currently boasts 13 marine units....and I know of two more on the way. Here's where that homework comes in... we're bigger then most Brigades!

But what does that mean? Well, it means we should be having at least as much fun as an entire brigade! It means we should be getting together and relishing the fact we bring so much to our beloved Corps. It also means we have a lot of work. That report isn't a thrill, but its much harder when folks don't submit their unit reports, or don't format them correctly. Please have some attention to detail when filing your report... your Staff will thank you for it!

I expect to see many of you at Muster/Summit, coming up in June. There are a lot of us, as stated above, so we should have a high turnout rate right? We're all Marines because we wanted to do more then the minimum, right? More opportunities to lead, more courses to enjoy, more uniforms to collect, etc. The best place to learn about and enjoy all that is at Summit and Muster! I look forward to meeting you all there!

(Continued from Previous Page)Award Nominations for the Brigade were due on the 15th of April, and I submitted many of them for members and units of 2BN. I hope other Marines around the Brigade did too. I found choosing my nominations for the various awards was quite challenging... and that is AWESOME. That means there was some very tough competition! We have a lot of good people, doing a lot of great things; and often, in the face of 'Real World' hardships. As the weeks go on, I learn more and more about our units, and our people and just how amazing our corner of the organization is!

That's all I got at this time – I look forward to continuing to work with you all!

an extract from the seals manualLTC Wallace “Ace” Cady

*** CONTINUED FROM LAST ISSUE ***

LTC Cady is in the process of writing the SEALS manual for STARFLEET, and he's been kind enough to let me publish parts of it for your enjoyment.

The Federation Border Guard Cutter Alpha Niner Niner Indigo glided through the outer banks of their patrol area. “Annie”, as she was called by the crew, was running silent and looking for trouble. The small cutter class vessel only had a four deck construction and carried fifty men and women. It was small, fast and very agile. It would have to be, considering what their quarry was. The science rating looked at her sensor scan for any sign. She was one of a dozen doing exactly this job. But sector 1156-Charlie was her territory; nothing moved that she didn’t see. Nineteen solar systems, four quasars, a class 4 nebula cloud, and about 11583 particles of space dust per cubic meter were all she saw, but, she was patient.

She, like her compatriots, had seen the footage of the freighter being destroyed. The non regulation motto painted over the door to the sensor room said “Ever Vigilant,” and it meant it. She had been on duty for nearly four hours and was due for a break. Her relief would be there soon. With as high of an alert as the cutter was on, the sensor ratings were required to take four hour shifts to stay sharp. She resisted scratching an itch, forcing herself to continue staring at her readouts.

Page 15: Cry Havoc!4 of 24 AIDE-DE-CAMP LTC Michael Tolleson, SFMC Greetings Marines, This is your new Aide-De-Camp Major Lieutenant Colonel Michael Tolleson. I would like to …

Something shifted. She refreshed her scan and noticed a slight differential in the ebbs and flows in the nebula. Resisting the urge to call for her supervisor without more concrete evidence, she risked tightening the focus on the bright blue and purple eruption of energized dust called the Gargoyle Nebula. Still on passive sensors, she was forced to wait, aching to blast the entire area with an active wave pulse. Slowly and quietly, the Luna class reconnaissance vessel pulled out of its sensor resistant harbor. The rating waited for the IFF (friend or foe) signal from the Starfleet vessel, but none came. That meant only one thing. She tagged the scan and looked over to the back of the room, “Chief!”

Red Alert klaxons blared as the Pearl’s corridors went crimson. Poker games were interrupted, holodeck program winked out of existence and dreams wiped out as combat boots were hurriedly laced up. Controls all over the bridge went from “Peace” to “War” as the course was laid in and Starbase Coronado’s Traffic Control was apprised of the situation. Traffic Control sent back the priority departure orders and alerted that the pattern was clear. The message finished with a simple “Good Hunting,” The Pearl Harbor backed from the immense city in space and readied for combat. Commander Maquire sat in the center chair, calling for readiness stations. Each returned with a customary affirmative as each section reported in. The grey starship lit up with rainbow trails, hurtling off for the Gargoyle Nebula.

Down in the hangar bays, flight suits were sealing and pilots sprinted to their fighters. STEAMs were disconnecting fuel umbilicals from the fighters, performing last minute checks, and when done, signaling the pilots with thumbs ups. Pearl’s flight control confirmed the traffic patterns for the launches and readied to help make the sector a safer place.

“Rand was watching his HUD mounted inside his helmet from the Noir class runabout Eldritch, as his teams jumped to their designated battle stations. Rollins would be on the runabout Mirielle with the Broncos. The Kirika would serve as the HEROs broadcast point. Once their mission was completed, the Kirika would pull them out, but, would be on station for support if anything went south.

The pressurized atmosphere carried the scream of the F-302 Raptors engines as they pulled into the electromagnetic catapult launch system’s queue. The runabout’s hull shook as the wake of the engine washed over them. Twelve Raptors launched from each the Pearl’s two main launch bays.

The 212nd (Paladin) and 418th (Dragonriders) squadrons lit up the warp space in front of the Pearl. Carried ahead by the momentum of the already speeding carrier, the Raptors were flung at high warp velocities toward the enemy starship. The hounds were away.

* * * * * * * * The ISS Ganymede was looking for prey, something easy but fat and juicy to add to their growing total of kills. Captain Romeo Marcus leaned up from his high backed command chair or “throne” as he liked to imagine it. His high black leather boots shined to a gloss as he uncrossed his legs and called for a sensor report. A freighter was three light years distant, some kind of small class vessel twelve light years away- likely just a barely armed cutter of some kind, and a convoy of colonists for the outer systems. He steepled his fingers, “I’m in the mood for the other white meat, Commander, let’s have the colonists.”

* * * * * * * *

The stealth runabouts readied for launch, as the Raptors settled into their attack pattern toward the Ganymede. On the Pearl’s bridge, the launch officer, a pretty brunette with her braid pigtails tied back out of her way. “Transferring launch control to runabouts, you may launch when ready.”

Rand tapped his helm and felt himself pushed back against his acceleration chair. The HUD showed each of the runabouts plowing out behind the Eldritch. They settled into an arrowhead and activated their cloaking devices.

* * * * * * *

The Ganymede’s science officer looked again at his readout and rechecked a third time. “Captain, a number of small craft are closing at a very high rate of speed. I’m reading at least Warp 8.5 and closing extremely quickly. None of the records in the computer recognize their configuration.” The captain rotated his throne around to confront the confused officer, “Mister Stonn, would you care to repeat that again? You don’t know what’s careening at us? What kind of asinine statement is that?”

“I’m sorry, sir, but they are small two man craft, I cannot ascertain their intent because the sensors can barely detect them. They appear to be dropping in and out of my ability to get a read on them. Perhaps it could be a stealth fighter squadron?”Captain Marcus rolled his eyes, “A stealth squadron? The Federation has no such ships. They don’t think that way. They’re peace loving. Weak. Pathetic” he spat back at the Vulcan officer.”

* * * * * * *

Paladin Lead called Dragonrider Lead over his encrypted subspace channel, “They are changing course towards us, guess they saw us.”“Yeah, had to work hard to make sure, these Raptors aren’t designed to be easily seen. So are you calling for first strike?”“Yeah, you had it last time, dibs” Paladin Lead chuckled back.

OIC REPORTS: 301st

Greetings fellow Marines!

The 301st has finally re-found itself! After having given back our name and motto to the ship we now serve on, the 301st is hence forth known as “Strike Group Cerberus” and our new motto is "Tria ostendens agens mortem" (which my people tell me is the translation to 'Three showing... Death dealing”).

Odd, I know. But, it makes a weird kinda of sense. 3rd Brigade is the Dogs of war...what's more fitting then a 3 headed Dog? Better still, 3 heads for a Combined Arms unit with Mecha, Aerospace and Ground forces? The motto reflects some of our gambling heritage, as soon shall our unit patch – a Grade spade background, with the three heads of Cerberus in black. Took us awhile to get it hammered out, but I think the members did a great job of representing our history and our home here in the 3rd Brigade.

Moving ahead we're still working on MURPS certification, with several members resuming their course taking after having dealt with other requirements or real life issues. We plan to be involved in role play, both internally and with our fellow ships and units of the Fleet and Corps. We've gained our 10th member just recently, so expect to see even more of us out and about!

That's all from us this time around! Jeremy Carsten, COL

Hello my fellow Marines,

I would like to talk to you today about a project I’m starting and want your feedback. I along with a few others are putting together a type of RPG game for the Brigade. This will be fun and see how creative our Marines in the 3BDE can be. This is basic game of creativity. Each team or unit will be given a task to for fill and it is up to you how it is done. You can play PS2, Halo, spade, etc. I don’t care what you do just get active in the game. The more you do the more I think you will enjoy it. All instructions will be given in your package that will be sent to your OIC at the start of the game. More detail will follow in the next additions of the newsletter and a sample will be at Muster. So if you are interested in having fun just drop me a line with your info and I will add your name to the list. Look forward to hearing from you in the future.
