The end of a school year is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and acknowledge our committed faculty, staff and supportive community members. It is also a time to reflect on our successes and begin making plans for the new school year. I would like to congratulate each of the graduating seniors who took part in such a remarkably beautiful ceremony on the evening of May 23, 2016. While surrounded by proud family and friends, faculty, staff, school board members and district personnel, the Class of 2016 was emboldened to reach their highest potential, overcome future challenges, fulfill their dreams and to always remember the foundation of their legacy built at CRHS. These encouraging words were exceptionally expressed in the Graduation Address given by Lhea Perry, the Reflection Speech given by Kathryn DeSomma, and the Visionary Speech given by Alyssa Marchione. Among the numerous achievements of our graduates this year, I would like to announce that they received a total of over $3.5 million dollars in scholarships; an impressive $1.5 million more than last year. Our Pirate Administration, faculty and staff are full of pride as we bid farewell to these incredible students. We wish them the very best in the next leg of their journey in life, whether they have chosen to pursue a career in the workforce, serve in the United States Military, or further their education at a college or university. This summer we have many exciting activities and programs that will be taking place on campus, as well as preparations by faculty and staff for another rewarding and successful school year. Be sure to continue reading the newsletter for further information on these happenings. I hope that each of you have an enjoyable summer break. Thank you for partnering with us in the education of our students during this amazing school year! Sincerely, Linda C. Picture Information All students who wish to appear in the senior section of the yearbook MUST have their picture taken by SWI Photography. Your senior will have two chances over the summer to have their picture taken and a make-up time in August when we return to school. It is the student’s responsibility to make certain they have their picture taken at one of the times offered so that they can be sure they will appear in their yearbook. The yearbook staff and Crystal River High School take no responsibility for students excluded from the yearbook due to the failure of the student to make arrangements or attend the makeup session as explained above. Pictures taken by other photography companies will not be used in the yearbook, under any circumstances. Business Academy Community Service Project The Crystal River High School Business Academy chose to support the Citrus County PetMeals Program through their “Pennies for Pets” project where students collected loose change and monetary donations that were used to purchase pet supplies. The PetMeals program helps seniors who receive “Meals on Wheels” due to being homebound from an illness or disability provide food for their pets. This year they donated over 335 pounds of dog food, over 220 pounds of cat food and 60 pounds of cat litter.

CODE OF CONDUCT & EXPECTATIONS Students enrolled at CRHS are expected to abide by all school rules as well as the rules of individual classroom teachers’. These expectations extend to any activity or event where students are representing CRHS including being transported to or from school, in a school bus or a school van. These guidelines offer a standard of behavior that is conducive to creating a learning community committed to the achievements that positively impact our community. Each student will receive a copy of the Citrus County Code of Conduct at the beginning of the school year. It is to your advantage to read in detail the policies, procedures, and information as well as the consequences regarding just a few of the following issues. Copies of the CCSB Code of Conduct are always available in the guidance office as well as our district website at www.citrus.k12.fl.us/schools/studentcodeofconduct

FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS All financial obligations should be clear prior to the beginning of the new school year. General Information

ABSENCES When a student has been absent from school, the parent/guardian is required to send a note with the student’s legal name, date of absence(s), and reason for the absence(s) signed by the legal parent/guardian to the attendance office within two (2) days of the student’s return to school. If the written statement is not provided by the parent, the absence(s) will be unexcused. After 10 days of excused or unexcused absences, a written statement from a licensed health care practitioner will be required for subsequent absences due to illness indicating they are under the supervision of the physician.

ATTENDANCE Regular school attendance promotes student achievement and is crucial for academic success on a 4 X 4 block schedule where an academic year is compressed into four months. The Citrus County Attendance Policy requires mandatory school attendance for students 16 years of age and younger. State laws have also been written that govern school attendance. Parents or guardians are responsible for following the compulsory attendance laws and communicating with the school when problems arise so that the school and parent can work together to ensure their child’s success. Parents, if at fault for jeopardizing their child’s academic success, may be held legally responsible which may include court hearings, fines and/or placement of the child in youth shelters where school attendance is insured.

BUS SAFETY While students are riding the school bus, they are under the authority of the school principal/designee and the bus driver. Students may be videotaped any time while on the bus and misbehavior or endangering the safety of others while on the bus may result in this privilege being revoked. In such cases, the parent/guardian will be responsible for providing transportation.

CELL PHONES Students are allowed to have cell phones on ONLY BEFORE SCHOOL, BETWEEN CLASSES, DURING LUNCHES, AND AFTER SCHOOL. Violations of this policy will result in disciplinary action.

DELIVERIES Delivery of non-school related items, e.g. balloons, flowers, fast-food delivery, etc., will not be accepted by the front office. We will attempt to get assignments, school projects, change of clothes, school books, and other school related items, delivered by parents, to their students.

DRESS CODE Appropriate school attire for students is explained on pages 29 - 31 in the Citrus County Code of Conduct.

DRIVING PRIVILEGES Students who fail to comply with attendance requirements per Florida Statute, Section 322.091 will have their driver’s license revoked by the state if they accumulate 15 unexcused absences in a period of 90 calendar days.

EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEEDURE Due to the large volume of telephone messages during a school day, telephone messages requesting that your child be dismissed early for an appointment, or to give them a message may not be answered in time to honor your request. Please make sure your child knows about any scheduled appointments, or has pertinent family information before he/she leaves for school to avoid miscommunication, missed appointments,

to help us keep classroom interruptions to a minimum. The administration strongly encourages appointments be made outside of school hours but, if an occasion arises that a student does need to leave campus early, please follow this early dismissal procedure: 1. Students must come to the attendance office prior to the first bell with a written

note from home and to receive a school issued early dismissal pass.2. The note from home should contain the following information: student’s full

legal name, student ID #, reason for leaving school, the date and time student is to be released, parent’s/guardian’s name and a phone number for verification.

3. Students will only be released to parents/guardians, or persons listed on the emergency card. No student will be dismissed without an adult signing him/her out in the front office and showing proper identification.

4. Students who leave campus between classes without a note will have unexcused absences recorded for the reminder of the day.

5. If an early dismissal is requested by a parent after a field trip or on an assembly day all of the above procedures will still apply.

CAMPUS VISITORS Anyone that is not enrolled or employed at Crystal River High School must first stop at the front desk and show a valid driver’s license before being admitted to our campus. During school hours, please use the main entrance from Turkey Oak as we maintain a closed campus policy.

ZERO TOLERANCE The expectation of the CRHS Administration and Staff is that while you are on campus, you make choices that will positively improve your education and high school experience. The following non-negotiable rules have been adopted by our discipline committee and will be implemented by teachers and staff. Violations will result in disciplinary action. • Controlled Substances/ Drugs & Alcohol • Theft / Stealing • Bullying / Fighting • Dress Code • Electronic Devices • Tardiness • Insubordination • Profanity • Disruptive Behavior • Excessive Public Display of Affection

TARDY POLICY Students are to be in their classroom BEFORE the late bell rings. An unexcused absence will be recorded if a student is more than 45 minutes late to class. If a student accumulates 9 tardies overall during a nine-week grading period, the student will receive a discipline referral. Students who have multiple tardies, attendance and discipline issues may lose privileges of participating in extra-curricular activities. Athletes are to be in attendance no less than half of his/her classes to eligible for scheduled practices or games. Citrus County Schools previously developed an Asbestos Management Program for all facilities. Required re-inspections of the facilities are performed at six month intervals. Information from these re-inspections, along with that from the original Management Plan, is available for review at each facility.

Boys And Girls State The American Legion, Post #155, Crystal River, has selected Katelin Clardy as a delegate to attend American Legion Auxillary Girls State along Brooke Discher as an alternate. Nova Barber, Patrick Brennan, Todd Harness Jr., Andrew Hecox, and Ethan Kennedy have been selected as well to be delegates to attend American Legion Boys State. This unique educational opportunity provides students with training in practical citizenship, leadership, and character development while modeling the structure and operation of its state government. Delegates from all over the State of Florida will have the opportunity to “learn by doing” as they run for office, practice public speaking, draft and debate legislation, and actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government as well as have fun and form lifelong friendships. Being chosen as a delegate is one of the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school juniors and is recognized by employers, service academies, and university admissions boards as an indicator of strong leadership and character traits since its inception in 1935. This year’s Boys State program will be held on the campus of FSU during the week of June 14th – June 20th, and this year’s Girls State Program will be held on the campus of FSU during the week of July 9th – July 17th. Congratulations!!!

Are You Aware? The requirements are changing for students who enroll full time at an NCAA Division I school after August 1, 2016. Students must graduate high school and meet ALL the following requirements: • Complete 16 core courses:

◦ Four years of English ◦ Three years of math (Algebra 1 or higher) ◦ Two years of natural/physical science (including one year of lab science if your

high school offers it) ◦ One additional year of English, math or natural/physical science ◦ Two years of social science ◦ Four additional years of English, math, natural/physical science, social science,

foreign language, comparative religion or philosophy• Complete 10 core courses, including seven in English, math or natural/physical

science, before the seventh semester. Once students begin their seventh semester, they may not repeat or replace any of those 10 courses to improve their core-course GPA.

• Earn at least a 2.3 GPA in their core courses.• Earn an SAT combined score or ACT sum score matching their core-course GPA on

the Division I sliding scale, which balances their test score and core-course GPA. If students have a low test score, they need a higher core-course GPA to be eligible. If they have a low core-course GPA, they need a higher test score to be eligible. If they have a low core-course GPA, they need a higher test score to be eligible.
