DIRECTOR’S NOTES:

Footloose is a classic story of teen rebellion, oppression, repression, and even loss

in a town where dancing is against the law. Only the Chicago native Ren has the ability to initiate a battle against the entire town of Bomont in an attempt to not

only dance, but to revitalize the spirit of this stifling, industrial town. When we first discussed doing Footloose this year, I wasn’t sold on the idea. I didn’t

want to do just another Footloose. I kept saying I refused to do it unless there was a way to escape the 1980’s and avoid regurgitating the same script and same

concept that always surrounds Footloose. That the concept and approach I was looking for was out there – I could feel it - I just had to find it. And then at 3 in the

morning, after talking ideas through with my Tech Director all night, came the ‘Aha! Moment’ as we call it.

Part of the oppression of Bomont is expressed through the small town mentality that somebody’s eyes are always watching. Never in the history of humanity has this

been truer than now. Due to technological advances and the speed at which they are developing, we are

under the observation of not only the town we live in and the people we pass every day, but of people in all corners of the world, of all ages and posts. If someone

needs to find us or get a hold of us (even if we don’t want them to) - we can’t escape our cell phone; if someone wants to know our thoughts, what we’re doing,

what we look like, who our family is, who our friends are – they just check out our Facebook page or our latest tweets; if someone has a video they want to post on YouTube because they think it’s funny or cool – they just do it. They don’t think to

make sure you’re okay with it or even get your permission. Frankly, they don’t care. Chances are you’re posted on there now and may not even know it.

Technology is often described as a necessary evil. But for the first time, we are seeing a generation of technology natives, including some young people that are so

consumed by computers, phones, and video games that they’re losing face-to-face social skills. The frightening part is that no matter how much you tell them to be

careful what pictures or videos they post – they don’t always understand there could be serious repercussions for them that resound and reverberate through their

lives. It could get them suspended from school, keep them from getting into the college they want, cost them a job interview, or get them fired.

Throughout this show, you will follow the characters through not only the traditional performance, but through texts, tweets, Facebook posts, videos, etc. You will see

the same characters you know, but you will experience Bomont and Footloose as our teens do in 2011. Along with its benefits, technology has compromised our privacy and I urge you to remember that someone’s eyes are always, always

watching. Kim

THE CAST

Rocki is a sophomore and appeared in last

year’s musical of Seussical as the Sour Kangaroo. She is excited

to play the role of Rusty in Footloose. Rocki plans to continue

performing in musical for the rest of high school because it is what

she loves to do and she has found lasting and meaningful

friendships. She would like to extend a special thanks to Ms. Scalise,

Mrs. Jenkins, and Mr. Zang for helping her broaden her talents and

continue to make her a better performer. Also, “Thank you Mom,

Dad, and yia yia for always believing in whatever dreams I have and for all the singing

and acting classes you had to take me to as a child. Now everybody cut

loose….Footloose!!”

This is Patrick’s first

musical production and he finds thorough enjoyment throughout the

whole thing. Patrick is a 2 year letterman of the football team and he

really hated it. Patrick is a fanatic of white vans and Belgium waffle

makers. He also enjoys guitar, piano, and Jimmy Palmer. He would like

to thank Ms. Scalise, Mrs. Jenkins, Mr. Zang, and New Era for the love.

Jamie Bruno has been

performing on the CV stage since freshman year and she is excited to

perform as Ariel for her final performance. Last year, Jamie was

a Gene Kelly Award Best Actress Nominee. Jamie is also a majorette.

After high school she plans to attend MTSU in Nashville for music

business. She is excited to perform Footloose with her best friends.

her hard work paid off. She wants to thank her musical family for all the

fun times and she will miss you all very much. She will be sure to attend

many shows to come.

insufficient funds. Thawed out several years ago, he is excited to be an

actor in his 2nd CVHS musical. He would like to thank his friends, family,

and supporters throughout the years.

Scalise and Mrs. Jenkins for all their hard work and all the ‘left arm

moves’. Megan would also like to thank all her family and friends for all

their support and encouragement through the years. Love you all.

– Lauren is a senior

and has participated in every musical possible. She calls musical

“the highlight of the year”, and feels that it is the most rewarding and

enjoyable experience of her high school career. And to those who live

under a rock and don’t already know this, Katie Vercek is her best

friend. SLAM!

This is Connor’s third

musical on the CV stage. You may remember him as The Cat in the Hat in

Seussical or as George in The Wedding Singer. Connor was nominated

for a Gene Kelly Award for each of those roles. He is extremely excited

and would like to thank his family and friends for all of their support

throughout the years.

This is Katie’s last performance

in the musical and she has enjoyed every bit of it. She has performed in

all of the musicals over the past 4 years and has had a lot of fun.

senior year. She is thankful for all of the friends she has gained from

this experience over the years, such as Lauren Johnson. She would also

like to thank Mrs. Jenkins, Ms. Scalise, and Mr. Zang for all the hard

work and energy they have put into the show to make it a great production.

Special Thanks to: Dustin Giffin, Cathy Jenkins, Jason Zang, & Victoria Petrovych for the countless hours of work they put in to help make all aspects of this production happen; an additional thank you to Dustin for being my partner and other half in all of this and more. When the stress kicks in he always knows how to keep me sane and he helps me complete all of my thoughts on where to go with the production and helps me bring them to life. I truly couldn’t do this without him; Sandy Scalise for her contributions above and beyond, year after year and yet never running out of creativity and always being there when I need a creative solution; Giffin Interior; Chris Scalise for being the best brother anyone could ask for - helping me with all the technical things I can’t do and supporting me, in all things; and lastly, my incredible son, Jameson, for not only spending days upon days with me at the school through this process, but on top of that for picking up a paint brush and being an active part of this production at 3 years old and telling me about how he wants to “sing and dance in the sky like the kids at Mommy’s work”. He’s a reminder that love and appreciation for theater can start so young and exposing a child to the collaborative and the imaginative powers of theater is no small thing – we teach them to dream.
