    The Origins of Agriculture: New Data, New Ideas resulted froma Wenner-Gren-sponsored symposium held at the HaciendaTemozon, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, March 6–13, 2009 (fig.1). The symposium was organized by T. Douglas Price (Uni-versity of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Aber-deen) and Ofer Bar-Yosef (Harvard University).

    The major aim of the symposium was to better understandthe origins of agriculture in light of new fieldwork, new sites,new analytical techniques, and more radiocarbon dates. Theglobal nature of agricultural origins was a key theme, and amajor focus of the discussions was on East Asia as well aslesser-known regions such as Papua New Guinea, Africa, andeastern North America, alongside more traditional areas suchas the Near East and Mesoamerica. The papers presented inthis supplementary issue are designed to provide the latestinformation on the antiquity of agriculture covering at least10 different centers of domestication.

    The organizers, Price and Bar-Yosef, note in their intro-duction that emerging data point to an unexpected synchron-icity in the timing of the first domesticates around the endof the Pleistocene. They also note that, contrary to earlierthought, the environments in which agriculture originatedwere not marginal and that agricultural experimentation tookplace in areas of concentrations of populations and resources.Each major area may also have included multiple loci fordomestication. These were major areas of agreement in ameeting that was characterized by lively debate over the va-riety of hypotheses proposed for agricultural origins andwhether global or more area-specific explanations were mostappropriate. As in any good meeting, there were more ques-tions than answers, but this is the sign of a dynamic field.The degree of collegiality and collaboration among the diversesymposium participants and the speed at which new data areaccumulating are good signs that our understanding of thisimportant period in human adaptation will continue to evolverapidly.

    terest in the origins of agriculture and domestication. One ofthe earliest meetings organized by the Foundation in July 1960led to the seminal publication Courses toward Urban Life:Archaeological Considerations of Some Cultural Alternates(Braidwood and Willey 1962). Other influential meetings in-cluded the Origins of African Plant Domestication (Harlan, DeWet, and Stemler 1972) and Where the Wild Things Are Now(Mullin and Cassidy 2007), which invited anthropologistsfrom all subfields to rethink the concept of domestication inanthropology. Information on these meetings and others canbe found on our Web site at http://wennergren.org/history.Most recently, agricultural origins were explored in a specialissue of Current Anthropology titled Rethinking the Origins ofAgriculture introduced by Mark Cohen (Cohen 2009). Thecurrent supplementary issue continues the discussions anddebates explored in this earlier contribution but is perhapsmore data rich and geographically diverse. Together these twoCA issues provide an excellent contemporary overview of thestate of research in this exciting area of inquiry.

    This introduction to the symposium and to this issue of Current Anthropology attempts to providesome sense of the topic, the meeting itself, the participants, and some of the initial results. Oursymposium brought together a diverse international group of archaeological scientists to consider atopic of common interest and substantial anthropological import—the origins of agriculture. Thegroup included individuals working in most of the places where farming began. This issue is organizedby chronology and geography. Our goal was to consider the most recent data and ideas from thesedifferent regions in order to examine larger questions of congruity and disparity among the groupsof first farmers. There is much new information from a number of important areas, particularlyAsia. Following a review of the history of investigation of agricultural origins, this introductionsummarizes the results of the conference. There are at least 10 different places around the worldwhere agriculture was independently developed, and the antiquity of domestication is being pushedback in time with new discoveries. Our symposium has emphasized the importance of a multidis-ciplinary approach to such large questions in order to assemble as much information as possible.We anticipate that the results and consequences of this symposium will have long-term ripple effectsin anthropology and archaeology.

    In the middle of March 2009, we were part of a group of 22individuals that included archaeologists, archaeobotanists, ar-chaeozoologists, a geneticist, and a physical anthropologistthat took a 6-day trip to a lovely hacienda near Merida inthe Yucatan of Mexico. We were well cared for and well fed,but it was an intense and demanding journey and at the sametime one of those rare opportunities for like-minded indi-viduals (we use that term loosely) to get together and explorea subject of shared interest, even fascination. We spent thosedays trying to better understand the origins of agriculture.The people were passionate, the ideas powerful, the infor-mation thought provoking, and it is small meetings like thisthat are the ones that we remember, that leave an imprint,and that generate messages and ideas that form and transformour views of the past.

    The Symposium and the Participants

    We, the coorganizers of this symposium, first met in 1968 atthe Paleolithic site of ‘Ubeidiya in the rift valley of Israel. Itwas about 120�F in the shade. Doug was a graduate studentvisiting from another excavation. Ofer was digging in the hotsun and seemed to enjoy it a lot. We next spent a weektogether at a School for American Research Seminar in SantaFe in 1993. We had a small, fine meeting on the earliestfarming. We have been talking ever since, and a few years agowe decided that there was so much new information on ag-riculture that another meeting was needed, and we ap-proached the Wenner-Gren Foundation.

    Wenner-Gren has organized more than 140 symposia, sothey have a pretty good feel for what works and for how torun a successful academic meeting. However, one of the com-plexities of small, intensive workshop meetings is that eachparticipant arrives with his or her own set of perspectives,experiences, and biases that provide insight but that can alsoact as blinders. The insight is of course important, but theblinders can impede broader synthesis. We observe only theworld we know. For example, Doug does archaeology innorthern Europe, and from that perspective he witnesses onlythe arrival of farming, not its origins. But the larger questions

    are often the same. Why do hunters become farmers? Whyis agriculture so dynamic in changing human adaptation andbehavior?

    Our symposium brought a number of biases: there was anOld World bias, an East Asia bias, a plant bias, a male bias,and an age bias; someone even suggested an anticamel bias.Specific individual knowledge and bias were critical for ourdiscussions. At the same time, most of the participants didmanage to put aside their blinders and take a wider point ofview.

    The biases at our symposium can be documented in partby a brief glimpse at the background of the participants. Therewere 22 scientists invited to the symposium—nine archae-ologists, six archaeobotanists, five archaeozoologists, a phys-ical anthropologist/demographer, and an archaeological ge-neticist. These individuals came from eight countries andwork in many major areas of agricultural origins and/orspread. A brief biography of each participant (in alphabeticalorder) may provide some sense of the perspectives at thesymposium. Coauthors who did not attend the meeting arenot included.

    Ofer Bar-Yosef is an archaeologist and MacCurdy Professorof Prehistoric Archaeology at Harvard University. Amongmany other interests, he has investigated the origins of ag-riculture in both Southwest Asia and China. Anna Belfer-Cohen is professor of archaeology at the Hebrew Universityin Jerusalem with interests in the transition to farming in theNear East. Peter Bellwood is an Australian archaeologist andprofessor at Australian National University. His interests focuson Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and he is a proponent ofthe connectedness of culture, linguistics, and human biology.Jean-Pierre Bocquet-Appel is an anthropological demogra-pher and research director at Centre National de la RechercheScientifique in Paris. His current interest concerns the agri-culture demographic transition worldwide.

    David Joel Cohen is an archaeologist and adjunct assistantprofessor at Boston University, where he helped establish theInternational Center for East Asian Archaeology and CulturalHistory. His current research focuses on the origins of agri-culture in East Asia. Gary W. Crawford is an archaeobotanistand professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga, Can-ada, and is interested in the origins and intensification ofagriculture in China, Japan, Korea, and Eastern North Amer-ica. Tim Denham is a research fellow at Monash Universityin Victoria, Australia. Over the past decade his research hasfocused on the emergence of agriculture in Papua NewGuinea.

    Dorian Q Fuller is a lecturer in archaeobotany at the In-stitute of Archaeology, University College London. His re-search focuses on the origins of agriculture in South and EastAsia. A. Nigel Goring-Morris is an archaeologist at HebrewUniversity in Jerusalem. His interests are in the beginningsof complexity in the Near East and Neolithization processes.Greger Larson is a research fellow at Durham University inthe United Kingdom. As an archaeological geneticist, his in-

    terests are concerned with ancient DNA and the evidence fordomestication. Gyoung-Ah Lee is an assistant professor at theUniversity of Oregon. Trained as an archaeobotanist, her in-terests focus on the origins of agriculture and its impact inEast Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan.

    Fiona Marshall is a professor at Washington University inSt. Louis, where she directs research in African prehistory andzooarchaeology. Her interests are in domestication, pastor-alism, climate change, and mobility. Mehmet Özdoğan is anarchaeologist and chair of the prehistory department at Is-tanbul University. His research for the past 2 decades hasfocused on the emergence of early food-producing sedentarycommunities and the spread of agriculture from Anatolia toEurope.

    Dolores R. Piperno is Senior Scientist and Curator of Ar-chaeobotany and South American Archaeology at the Na-tional Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, andthe Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Balboa, Panama.Her interests are in domestication and tropical archaeologyand paleoecology. T. Douglas Price is Weinstein Professor ofEuropean Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin–Mad-ison and 6th Century Chair in Archaeological Science at theUniversity of Aberdeen. His major interests involve the tran-sition from hunters to farmers in northern Europe and ar-chaeological chemistry. He is director of the Laboratory forArchaeological Chemistry in Madison. Peter Rowley-Conwyis a professor at Durham University, United Kingdom, andan archaeozoologist with interests in the spread of pigs andagriculture across Europe. Bruce D. Smith is Curator of NorthAmerican Archaeology and Senior Research Scientist in Ar-chaeobiology at the National Museum of Natural History inWashington, DC. He is currently interested in integrating bi-ological and anthropological approaches to documentingplant and animal domestication.

    Jean-Denis Vigne is an archaeozoologist with interests inmammal domestication in Eurasia. He is employed by CentreNational de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris, and is in chargeof the laboratory of archaeozoology and archaeobotany at theFrench National Museum of Natural History. Ehud Weiss isa senior lecturer and the director of the archaeobotanicallaboratory at Bar-Ilan University and the Weisman Instituteof Science in Israel. He is interested in the beginning of plantdomestication in the Near East through the prism of archaeo-botany. Melinda A. Zeder is Senior Research Scientist andCurator of Old World Archaeology and Zooarchaeology atthe National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.Her interests concern the domestication of animals in generaland the social and environmental implication of early agri-culture in the ancient Near East more specifically. Zhijun(Jimmy) Zhao is a staff scientist at the Institute of Archae-ology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing.     Definitions and Dates

    Definitions

    To enhance consistency in our discussions we have tried todefine some terms of common usage. There was not universalagreement on the meaning of these words, of course, and theindividual authors use these definitions or not as they findappropriate in the following articles. Our purpose here is notto set the final definitions of important terminology but rathersimply to try to use these words consistently in the paperspresented here. A number of authors have suggested defini-tions for these terms over the years (e.g., Harris 1996, 2007),but there are still no widely accepted meanings. In the papersin this issue of Current Anthropology, the following definitionswill be used unless noted by the individual authors.

    Mobility and sedentism. These are relative terms that de-scribe a range from completely mobile to completely sed-entary. Sedentism is difficult to measure in the archaeologyof the last hunters and first farmers, and this definition at-tempts to recognize that. It was suggested that the presenceof commensals, such as house mice, and the seasonal distri-bution of plant foods within the same site may indicate anannual long-term occupation.

    Management. Manipulation and some degree of controlof wild species (plants or animals) without cultivation ormorphological changes. In the 1970s this kind of treatmentwas referred to as “cultural control.”

    Cultivation. Intentional preparation of the soil (OxfordEnglish Dictionary) for planting wild or domesticated plants.Identified in many cases by arable weeds in cereal caches(Bogaard et al. 1999; Harris 2007). The term is often used toindicate cultivation of wild plants before domestication.

    Domestication. Morphological or genetic changes in plantand animal species. Archaeozoologists also use criteria suchas age profiles, milking, and osteological pathologies.

    Farming. Utilization of domestic plants and/or animalsfor food as well as other resources.

    Agriculture. Farming and/or herding predominate the ac-tivities of a particular community and determine the maindiet, although hunting and gathering may continue.

    There were also a number of terms that were not usedoften at the symposium. Words such as “horticulture,” “ar-boriculture,” “herding,” “pastoralism,” “husbandry,” “stor-age,” “agropastoralism,” and “intensity of food production”may also be important and useful to scholars of early agri-culture in both the Old and New Worlds. Bruce Smith andothers, for example, found utility in the concept of “low-levelfood production” (Smith 2001). In an ideal world, all of theseterms would have fixed meanings that could be used easilyin discussions of the first farmers, but for the present suchconsensus does not exist.

    Dating

    Also for purposes of consistency, the authors in this issuehave been asked to report radiocarbon dates in terms of cal-ibrated years before present (BP cal) with �1 SD, unlessotherwise noted. Authors were also asked to note the cali-bration program that was used.

    The Organization of This Issue

    Because of the number of participants and the size and formatof this publication, we are limited to brief contributions anda few illustrations each. For these reasons as well, our intro-duction will be brief. All of the papers have been rewrittenfollowing the symposium to incorporate the ideas and inputfrom our discussions. These revisions clearly reflect the impactof the discussions on the participants and the stimulus thatwas provided by the symposium.

    The papers in this issue have been organized largely bychronology and geography to facilitate access for the reader.The earliest evidence for the origins of agriculture comes fromSouthwest Asia. Bar-Yosef (2011) writes about the role ofclimate change and the congruence in the chronology of ag-ricultural origins in the Near East and China with the YoungerDryas cold episode at the end of the Pleistocene. Goring-Morris and Belfer-Cohen (2011; see also Belfer-Cohen andGoring-Morris 2011) have provided two contributions de-tailing the Neolithization process in the Near East as seenwithin the core area and from the larger region. One of thefascinating things about their contribution about the “Neo-lithic revolution” is that is has little to do with subsistence.Animal and plant management as well as domestication inthe Near East are the focus of papers by Zeder (2011), Weissand Zohary (2011), and Vigne et al. (2011). Zeder providesa thorough discussion of current evidence for domestication.Weiss and Zohary consider the evidence for the major founderspecies of plants. Vigne and colleagues provide a look at theremarkable evidence from Cyprus where Pre-Pottery Neo-lithic people brought plants and animals, essentially re-cre-ating an Early Neolithic ecosystem on that rather barren Med-iterranean island.

    The next set of papers deals with East Asia, largely froman archaeobotanic perspective. Cohen (2011) offers an over-view of the beginnings of agriculture in China in the contextof interregional interaction. Zhao (2011) details the abundantnew botanical data that have appeared in the past 10 years.Lee (2011) elaborates on agricultural origins in Korea. Craw-ford (2011) provides an overview of recent advances in ourunderstanding of early cultivation in East Asia with a focuson Japan.

    South Asia and Africa provide a very different statementon the beginnings of farming, and questions continue aboutthe appearance of native domesticates. Fuller (2011) tracksthis issue, finding plant domestication in the Indian subcon-

    tinent. Animal domestication in Africa is the subject of thecontribution by Marshall and Weissbrod (2011), with a focuson the donkey in particular and African pastoralism in gen-eral.

    In the Pacific, two studies are presented. Bellwood (2011)provides an overview of Holocene population history of theregion as a model for worldwide food-producer dispersals.Denham (2011), on the other hand, offers details of the evi-dence for domestication and early agriculture in New Guineaand Island Southeast Asia.

    The spread of agriculture subsequent to its origins is thesubject of papers dealing with the European evidence. Öz-doğan (2011) provides an in-depth look at the archaeologicalevidence for the westward movement of early farmers fromAnatolia to the Aegean and Balkans of Europe. The new evi-dence from European Turkey and Bulgaria is rewriting ourunderstanding of this spread. Rowley-Conwy (2011) contin-ues the story of westward movement from Central Europe tothe Atlantic. The picture of the expansion of early farmingacross Europe is now one of repeated episodes of very rapidspread followed by long periods of stability. Bursts of regionalexpansion are not in contrast to the overarching model ofcontinuous millennial-scale demic diffusion but provide amore detailed picture that brings the information closer tothe social history of particular populations.

    Turning to the New World, Piperno (2011) examines theevidence for origins of plant cultivation and domesticationin the tropics of Central and South America. Abundant newevidence from starch grains and phytoliths as well as mac-robotanical remains provides exciting new information andpushes back the dates for early domestication. Smith (2011)continues his documentation of an early center for domes-tication in Eastern North America with a consideration of thecultural context of this process, the evidence coming fromarchaeology.

    Two papers were topical rather than areal and covered im-portant aspects of the study of agricultural origins. Larson(2011) provides a refreshingly candid view of the role of ge-netics in the study of plant and animal domestication. Thereis great promise in this method, but serious problems remainto be solved. Jean-Pierre Bocquet-Appel (2011), proponentof the concept of the Neolithic demographic transition, de-scribes the background and development of this model ofpopulation growth across the transition to agriculture (Boc-quet-Appel and Bar-Yosef 2008).

    The State of Play

    In order to place the results of our symposium and some ofthe new ideas and information that emerged in perspective,it may be useful to briefly review the development of ideasabout the origins of agriculture and some of the explanationsthat have been proffered. We can best understand ideas aboutthe origins of agriculture from a historical perspective, con-

    sidering the early theories first. Explanations of why domes-tication occurred include the oasis hypothesis, the natural-habitat hypothesis, the population-pressure hypothesis, theedge hypothesis, the social hypothesis, and more. A consid-eration of these ideas also reveals much about the nature ofarchaeology and archaeologists.

    During the first half of the twentieth century, the best in-formation on early farming villages came from riverine areasor oases in Northeast Africa and Southwest Asia—along theNile River in Egypt and at Jericho in the Jordan Valley, forexample. Early views on the origins of agriculture focused onclimate change. At that time, the end of the Pleistocene wasassumed to have been a period of increasing warmth anddryness in the earth’s climate. Scholars reasoned that becausethe ice ages were cold and wet, they should have ended withhigher temperatures and less precipitation. Given that viewof past climate, logic suggested that areas such as SouthwestAsia, a dry region to begin with, would have witnessed sig-nificant aridity at the end of the Pleistocene when vegetationgrew only around limited water sources. The oasis hypothesissuggested a circumstance in which plants, animals, and hu-mans would have clustered in constrained zones near water.V. Gordon Childe, one proponent of this idea, argued thatthe only successful solution to the competition for food inthese situations would be for humans to domesticate andcontrol the animals and the plants. In this sense, domesti-cation emerged as a symbiotic relationship for the purposeof human survival.

    During the 1940s and 1950s, however, new evidence sug-gested that there had been no dramatic climatic changes inSouthwest Asia at the close of the Pleistocene—no crisis dur-ing which life would concentrate at oases. The new infor-mation forced a reconsideration of the origins of agriculture.The late Robert Braidwood pointed out in his natural-habitathypothesis that the earliest domesticates therefore should ap-pear where their wild ancestors lived. That area, the “hillyflanks” of the Fertile Crescent in Southwest Asia, should bethe focus of investigations. Braidwood and a large team ofresearchers excavated at the site of Jarmo in northern Iraqand elsewhere in the Fertile Crescent and found evidence ofearly agriculture, supporting his hypothesis that domestica-tion did indeed begin in the natural habitat.

    Braidwood did not offer a specific reason as to why do-mestication occurred other than to point out that technologyand culture were ready by the end of the Pleistocene and thathumans were familiar with the species that were to be do-mesticated. At that time, archaeologists and others generallyconsidered that farming was a highly desirable and welcomeinvention providing security and leisure time for prehistoricpeoples. Once human societies had recognized the possibilitiesof domestication, they should have immediately started farm-ing following the perspectives of the time.

    Lewis Binford (1968) challenged those ideas in the 1960sand focused on population. Binford argued that farming wasbackbreaking, time consuming, and labor intensive. Citing

    studies of ethnographically known hunter-gatherers, hepointed out that they spend only a few hours a day obtainingfood; the rest of their time is for visiting, talking, gambling,and the general pleasures of life. Even in very marginal areas,such as the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, food collectingis a successful adaptation, and people rarely starve. Binfordargued, therefore, that human groups would not becomefarmers unless they had no other choice, that the origins ofagriculture was not a fortuitous discovery but a last resort.

    Binford made his point by positing an equilibrium betweenpeople and food, a balance that could be upset by either adecline in available food or an increase in the number ofpeople. Because climatic and environmental changes appearedto be minimal in Southwest Asia, Binford thought it musthave been increased population size that upset the balance.Population pressure was thus introduced as a causal agent forthe origins of agriculture: more people required more food.The best solution to the problem was domestication, whichprovided a higher yield of food per acre of land. At the sametime, however, agricultural intensification required more la-bor to extract the food.

    Binford’s concern with population was elaborated and ex-tended as a global explanation by Mark Cohen (1977, 2009).Cohen argued for an inherent tendency for growth in humanpopulation, a pattern responsible for the initial spread of thehuman species out of Africa, the colonization of Asia andEurope, and eventually colonization of the Americas as well.According to Cohen, after about 10,000 BC, all the habitableareas of the planet were occupied, and population continuedto grow. At that time, there was an increase in the use of lessdesirable resources in many areas. Land snails, shellfish, birds,and many new plant species were added to the human dietaround the end of the Pleistocene. Cohen argued that theonly way for a very successful but rapidly increasing speciesto cope with declining resources was for them to begin tocultivate the land and domesticate its inhabitants rather thansimply to collect the wild produce.

    Domestication for Cohen was a solution to problems ofoverpopulation on a global scale. There is, however, very littleevidence for population pressure in the record of agriculturalorigins. Population is a notoriously difficult parameter tograsp in prehistory. In the very few cases where some infor-mation is available, such as in the Levant as presented in thisissue by Belfer-Cohen and Goring-Morris (2011), there mayeven be some population decline shortly before the first ap-pearance of domesticates. As Bocquet-Appel (2011) pointsout in this issue and elsewhere, most of the evidence forgrowing population comes after the origins of agriculture, notbefore.

    Others, arguing that the transition to farming and foodstorage and surplus cannot be understood simply in terms ofenvironment and population, have developed social hypoth-eses to explain the origins of agriculture. Barbara Bender(1975) and Brian Hayden (1992, 1995), among others, havesuggested that the origins of food production may lie more

    in the ability of certain individuals to generate a surplus offood and to transform that surplus into more valued items,such as rare and valued materials and objects. From this per-spective, agriculture was the means by which social inequalityemerged and egalitarian societies became hierarchical. Sucha view is intriguing if difficult to document. It is very mucha chicken-egg question, like the issue of population pressure,of which came first. There is subtle evidence for social in-equality in the Early Neolithic of the Near East (Price andBar-Yosef 2010), but such reorganization of social relationsand wealth accumulation may be a consequence of agricul-tural production rather than a cause.

    There are a number of other intriguing theories about whyhuman societies began to cultivate the earth along with somenot so enlightening ideas. Geographer Carl Sauer (1952) sug-gested that agriculture began in the hilly tropics of SoutheastAsia, where sedentary groups with knowledge of the rich plantlife of the forest might have domesticated plants for poisonsand fibers. Botanist David Rindos (1984) has argued thatdomestication was a process of interaction between humansand plants evolving together into a more beneficial symbioticrelationship.

    In a fascinating volume titled Naissance des divinités, naiss-ance de l’agriculture: la révolution des symboles au Néolithique(The Birth of the Gods and the Origins of Agriculture), Frencharchaeologist Jacques Cauvin (1994) argued that the impor-tant changes associated with the “Neolithic revolution” weremore cultural than economic. He meant that the transitionto farming involved concepts and ideas as much as or morethan food production. Specifically, he suggested that agricul-ture was preceded by the emergence of new cosmologies,religious practices, and symbolic behaviors. This transfor-mation of hunter-gatherers that allowed them to view theirhabitat in a different way also promoted the more activeexploitation of that environment according to the views ofCauvin.

    In recent years, the school of evolutionary ecology in ar-chaeology has provided its take on the origins of agriculturein a series of papers and volumes (e.g., Bleed and Matsui2010; Gremillion and Piperno 2009; Winterhalder and Ken-nett 2006, 2009). Evolutionary ecology developed out of anearlier perspective known as cultural ecology, which focusedon the dynamic relationship between human society and itsenvironment using culture as the primary mechanism of ad-aptation. Culture is a giant concept and hard to work with,so evolutionary ecologists have emphasized human abilitiesto reason and to optimize their behavior. In this view, naturalselection is thought to operate on the behavior of individuals.Evolutionary ecologists assume that natural selection designedorganisms to adapt to local conditions in fitness-enhancingor optimizing ways.

    One of the major tenets of this perspective involves a con-cept known as optimal foraging theory—borrowed from bi-ology—to explain the food-getting behavior of humans, es-pecially hunter-gatherers. Optimal foraging theory argues that

    the most efficient foraging strategies produce the greatest re-turn in energy relative to time and effort expended. Optimalforaging assumes that humans make rational decisions basedon economic efficiency. Evolutionary ecologists examine thearchaeological and ethnographic record looking for thingssuch as “optimization goals,” “currencies,” and “constraints”and applying ecological and mathematical models to explainhuman behavior.

    Ideas about the origins of agriculture have sometimes beencategorized as either push or pull models. Hunter-gatherersare either pushed, or forced, to become farmers or they arepulled, drawn by the benefits of a new lifestyle. Population-pressure models, for example, force human societies to findnew ways to feed growing numbers of members. Social hy-potheses usually involve pull, in which members of societyare drawn into relationships of inequality in order to benefitfrom new arrangements that reduce risk or increase wealth.

    The perspective of evolutionary ecology involves pushmodels. Hunter-gatherers operate on the premise of efficiencyto acquire sufficient food to eat. Foods are ranked by netenergy value, and lower-ranked subsistence resources (suchas seeds) are added only as higher-ranked foods become un-available. Such push perspectives appear to assume thathunter-gatherers are surviving among limited resources indifficult environments. One of the most important and en-lightening realizations in recent years is the fact that agri-cultural origins take place in relatively abundant environ-ments, not in places where little food is available (Price andGebauer 1995). It is in such situations of sufficient subsistenceresources, where risk is limited, that experiments leading tothe origins of agriculture took place. Higher-ranked food re-sources do not appear to have declined or become unavailablein such contexts, bringing into question the utility of suchoptimal foraging models.

    More recently, detailed information on climate change hascome from a most unlikely place, the glaciers of Greenland.Deep corings of the ice sheets there have provided a layeredrecord of changes in temperature and other aspects of climatefor the past 100,000 years and more. One of the very inter-esting results of this research is the documentation of a 33%increase in atmospheric CO2 at the end of the Pleistocene(Sage 1995). Higher levels of CO2 would foster the expansionof temperate species such as grasses, which include many ofthe ancestors of the major domesticated species. The full im-plications of such changes in the atmosphere are not yet clearbut may play a role in the transition from hunting to farming.The evolutionary ecologists have picked up on CO2 and arguethat climatic amelioration that followed in the Early Holoceneand the accompanying rise in CO2 made the origins of ag-riculture “compulsory” (Bettinger, Richerson, and Boyd2009).

    The simple fact is that we do not yet have a good graspon the causes for the origins of agriculture. The how and thewhy of the Neolithic transition remain among the more in-triguing questions in human prehistory. There is as yet no

    single accepted theory for the origins of agriculture—rather,there is a series of ideas and suggestions that do not quiteresolve the question. At the same time, of course, the evidencewe have is scanty and limited. A great deal more research anddiscussion needs to be done. That is why we convened thissymposium.

    Some Observations

    The focal point of the symposium was, of course, the originsof agriculture. We hoped to bring together new data and newideas to push our understanding of this remarkable phenom-enon further along. The origins of agriculture is one of themost important developments in our past. Virtually every-thing we as humans know and do today stems from thisremarkable transition. Detailed study of this issue—the pre-sentation of evidence and the evaluation of potential an-swers—has significance for students of the past, for anthro-pology as a whole, and for a wide range of related areas ofscholarly interest.

    There are both practical and theoretical implications of thestudy of agricultural transitions. The documentation of whenand where farming began provides a powerful statement re-garding the global nature of this event. Investigation of theshift from hunting and gathering to farming invokes virtuallyall aspects of anthropological perspectives on human behaviorand cultural change. The transition to agriculture is a com-mon human experience that has effected us all in terms ofrapid population growth and aggregation and social inequal-ity. Is it “the worst mistake in the history of the human race”(Diamond 1987) or an inevitable step in the evolution ofhuman society?

    A multitude of developments concerned with the originsand spread of agriculture have taken place in recent years.New fieldwork and new sites in new and old places, moreradiocarbon dates, and new methods have documented earliertransitions to agriculture in parts of Asia, the south Pacific,and the Americas. Studies of microscopic plants remains, es-pecially starch grains and phytoliths, have revolutionizedidentification of plant exploitation before the emergence ofcultivation as well as the appearance of domesticated plants.Advances in the genetics of domestication, such as utilizingancient DNA to examine the relationships among prehistoricdomestics, are beginning to resolve standing questions aboutwhere and when. It is time to assemble this new information,to sift and winnow, and to summarize our current under-standing of the origins and spread of agriculture.

    Our symposium on the state of the art in the study of theorigins of agriculture was intended to provide a baseline forcontinuing and future work. We wanted to learn new facts,examine a wide range of variables, and use our knowledge toevaluate current explanations and to explore new ideas forunderstanding what took place at the origins of agriculture.

    Above all we wanted to think in new directions about thislarge, complex, and obstinate issue.

    There is too little collaboration and interaction betweenthe varied disciplines investigating this question (e.g., genetics,botany, zoology, archaeology, linguistics, demography). Anenormous amount of research is going on today in a ratheruninformed context. This symposium was intended to inte-grate that context and provide shared perspectives on thequestion of agricultural origins. This work is going on aroundthe world, and one of our primary goals was to bring togetherthe leading scholars concerned with this question from diverseplaces and origins. Such gatherings are extremely rare andoften very fruitful.

    We were a volatile mix of scholars, from many times andplaces. At the end of our time together, we did not determinewhy agriculture originated. We did not even agree on whetherits causes were global or local. Archaeozoologists decried thedifficulties involved in identifying domestication and seekcomplex forms of evidence for the process (Zeder 2006a,2006b); archaeobotanists seek changes in morphology andgenetic makeup as indicators of changes in plants (e.g., Smith2006; Zohary and Hopf 2000). These differences mean distinctviews on the question of agricultural origins from the twosubdisciplines. Some might conclude that our symposium wasnot successful.

    In fact, we believe this symposium was a great success.Perhaps most importantly there was a strong sense of collab-oration at the meeting. There was much new in terms of bothinformation and ideas. There was a major emphasis on theorigins of agriculture in East Asia. Lesser-known regions suchas Papua New Guinea, Africa, and eastern North Americawere included in our discussions. Lots of new data were pre-sented from East and West Asia, Africa, and Central and SouthAmerica. We were able to put together a table of the latestinformation on the antiquity of agriculture in various partsof the world and recognized that there are at least 10 differentplaces with claims as original centers of domestication (fig.1). Information on estimated dates BP cal for domesticationin these areas is provided in table 1 (see also fig. 1).

    The antiquity of domestication has been pushed deeperinto the past in many areas. Today, an eerie synchronicity inthe timing of the first domesticates around the end of thePleistocene is emerging. Another commonality among thecradles of agriculture is the rich environments in which farm-ing originates. Experiments in domestication do not take placein marginal areas but amid concentrations of population andresources across the globe. It also appears that in each areawhere several different species are involved in the transitionto agriculture, there are multiple centers of domesticationwithin the region. A number of groups appear to be manip-ulating their natural world.

    Remarkable new studies are documenting this evidence.Microscopic studies of starch grains in South America haveidentified a number of early crops, and more specific infor-mation on their origin and distribution is becoming available

    (Piperno 2011). New work is beginning to provide data fromcritical regions in Mesoamerica, one of the least understoodregions of early agricultural origins (Piperno et al. 2009; Ran-ere et al. 2009). Archaeobotany is moving forward rapidlywith a variety of techniques for recording information relatedto domestication (Allaby, Fuller, and Brown 2008; Fuller2011). Genetic studies of modern and ancient DNA in do-mesticated plants and animals are also providing remarkabledata on species distribution and evolution (e.g., Dobney andLarson 2006). Genetic markers for domestication are startingto be identified. At the same time, a note of caution regardinggenetic studies, especially age estimation based on mutationrate, permeated the symposium and was reiterated by ourresident archaeogeneticist (Ho and Larson 2006).

    One of the most interesting phenomena we noted was notpattern but variation. In the one or two places where dataon the transition are relatively rich, there appears to be aperiod of chaos, a “zone of variability” at the origins of ag-riculture (Weiss, Kislev, and Hartmann 2006). There seemsto be a period for the auditioning of many possible newoptions in human adaptation. This is the beginning of a newway of life.

    Three recent discoveries from the earliest Neolithic in theNear East highlight this zone of variability, change our un-derstanding of this period in human prehistory, and raiseenormous new questions. The colonization of the Mediter-ranean island of Cyprus by Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic A andPre-Pottery Neolithic B people carrying domestic plants anddomestic and wild animals by boat is an extraordinary story(Guilaine et al. 1998, 2000; Peltenburg and Wasse 2004; Pel-tenburg et al. 2000; Simmons 2007; Vigne et al. 2000). Ex-cavations at Göbekli Tepe in southern Turkey have revealeda series of remarkable shrines or centers associated with largestone architecture and art from the same time period (Petersand Schmidt 2004; Schmidt 2001, 2003, 2006; Schmidt andHauptman 2003). The roughly contemporary burial groundof Kafar HaHoresh in Israel documents enormous new var-iation in the treatment of the dead and indications of emerg-ing social inequality at this time (Goring-Morris 2005; Gor-ing-Morris et al. 1998).

    A number of potentially important variables involved inthe shift from foraging to farming were discussed at the sym-posium. These include sedentism, storage, population density,population pressure, resource abundance, resource availabil-ity, niche construction, processing and harvesting technolo-gies, climate and environmental changes, ownership of pro-duce and resource localities, potential domesticates,competition, inequality, risk reduction, nutritional require-ments, choice, chance, and a receptive social/cultural context.

    Some Conclusions

    Farming is a way of obtaining food that involves the culti-vation of plants and the controlled herding of animals. But

    the beginnings of new subsistence systems were much morethan cultivation, herding, or the ensuing domestication ofvarious species. This revolution entailed major long-termchanges in the structure and organization of the societies thatadopted this new way of life as well as a totally new rela-tionship with the environment. Humans truly began to har-ness the earth. While hunter-gatherers live off the land in anextensive fashion, generally exploiting a diversity of resourcesover a broad area, farmers utilize the landscape intensivelyand create a milieu that suits their needs.

    The symposium at Temozon and the papers proffered inthis issue attempt to describe some of the latest evidence andto comprehend these extraordinary developments. Here, wehope to provide some sense of the results of the symposiumand our own perception of the state of knowledge concerningthe origins of agriculture. We learned a great deal. Some ofthe major threads woven throughout the symposium includedthe importance of integrating the subdisciplines, the aban-donment of dichotomies for the study of process and trans-formation, the chaos of transitions (a period of “auditioning,”as Bruce Smith termed it), the importance of attention todetail in the study of landscapes and species as well as ar-chaeological sites, the punctuated nature of agriculturalspread, the many major gaps in our knowledge, and the ne-cessity for critically reevaluating existing information. Therewas also lots of terminology, much new data, some innovativeideas about causality, and many remaining questions.

    It is important to separate the origins of agriculture from

    the process of domestication and to distinguish biology fromculture in the transition from hunting to farming. The criteriafor identifying domestication differ significantly for plants andanimals. Plants rather quickly exhibit distinct morphologicalchanges; animals are much slower to show such develop-ments. Archaeozoology has introduced a number of impor-tant new concepts regarding the process. Three classes of do-mesticates can be identified: (1) commensals, adapted to ahuman niche (e.g., dogs, cats, guinea pigs); (2) prey animalssought for food (e.g., cows, sheep, pig, goats); and (3) targetedanimals for draft and nonfood resources (e.g., horse, camel,donkey). Changes related to domestication may be more spe-cies specific in animals. These differences mean that non-morphological criteria, such as changes in age profiles ofherds, may be required for fauna.

    Increasing site size is one of the primary archaeologicalindicators of changes in human subsistence and organizationassociated with the agricultural revolution. This increase is areflection of population growth as well as new forms of set-tlement and organization. One of the more striking devel-opments associated with the arrival of farming is the increas-ing visibility of a human presence in the archaeological record.Hunter-gatherers rarely leave visible traces, few bumps in thelandscape. Shell middens, some ditches, and other featuresremain today, but even the most complex hunter-gathereradaptations did not modify the landscape to a large extent orleave many traces that are visibly on the surface of the earthtoday.

    The phantom of causality floated at the edge of our delib-erations at Temozon, always there but not often addressed.This transition from hunting to farming poses one of themost intriguing questions about the human past and one ofthe most difficult to answer: why did hunters become farmers?Causality is such a thorny issue. There is no common playingfield or shared rules of engagement. The evidence from dif-ferent parts of the world varies in both quantity and quality.That discordance is disconcerting. Variation generates manyperspectives and divergence. Consensus on fundamentals islacking.

    Are there general causes? The almost simultaneous devel-opment of agriculture in so many different places is not simplecoincidence. Should we invoke climate, environment, pop-ulation, subsistence intensification, brain capacity, religion,inequality, entrepreneurs? Are there specific conditions? Arethere immediate and local causes distinct from global ones?Are the origins of agriculture the results of a “perfect storm”of factors that forced or encouraged human societies to do-mesticate plants and animals?

    The division between generalists and particularists was clearat Temozon. Particularists wanted to look at each individualcase of agricultural origins as unique; generalists sought amore global explanation that would encompass all of the areaswhere early agriculture appeared. Some in the group insistthat causality is a local or regional phenomenon that variesacross time and space. Zeder and Smith (2009) have argued

    at some length that global views, “one-size-fits-all” approachesto the explanation of agricultural emergence and dispersal,are not feasible. Bruce Smith enlivened the symposium onemorning by arguing that “causality is in the eye of the be-holder”—that generalization was not possible because of thecomplexity of individual contexts.

    Others believe that the simultaneity of the origins of ag-riculture in time argues for general or global causes. It iscompletely remarkable that the process of domesticatingplants and animals appears to have taken place separately andindependently in a number of areas at about the same time.Given the long prehistory of our species, why should thetransition to agriculture happen within such a brief period,a few thousand years in a span of more than 6 million yearsof human existence? An important and dramatic shift in thetrajectory of human adaptation would seem to demand gen-eral explanation. But such answers are hard to reach.

    Anna Belfer-Cohen brightened the symposium room onemorning with a quote from Nigel Barley (1989, p. 205): “An-thropology largely neglects the individual to deal in gener-alizations. Generalizations always tell a little lie in the serviceof greater truth.” Conclusions, of course, involve generali-zations. It is important to recognize some of the limitationsand constraints on such broad speculation. In spite of ex-traordinary advances in a variety of fields, many detailed atthe symposium, we really know very little about the originsof agriculture. There is some information from SouthwestAsia, a little data from East Asia and North America, andnext to nothing from the rest of the world. We are still in theearly stages of the process of identifying and understandingthis transition from hunting to farming.

    Moreover, as we learn more about a specific region, it be-comes clearer how complex the past was, exhibiting muchmore variability than we have admitted or realized. The NearEast is the prime example. There is more information fromthis region about the origins of agriculture than anywhereelse in the world: more sites, more excavations, more analyses,more publications, and so on. Yet new discoveries in the past20 years have completely altered our understanding of thisarea and revealed levels of complexity not even imagined 2decades ago.

    A number of important general factors in the origins ofagriculture were recognized at the symposium. These factorscan be categorized as exogenous, or natural (e.g., climate/environment, population growth), and endogenous, or cul-tural (e.g., social change, religion). Theories on the transitionto agriculture have most often focused on external factorssuch as climatic change or inherent growth in population asproblems solved by the cultivation of plants and animals.Exogenous factors are generally natural forces over whichhuman groups have little control; endogenous factors reflectinternal change within society and decisions that humansmake.

    A series of significant variables involved in the shift fromforaging to farming were discussed at Temozon. The most

    important factors in the transition from the perspective ofthe authors presented here include, in order of suggestedimportance, available protodomesticates, human sedentism,higher population density, resource abundance, geographicand/or social constraints, processing and harvesting technol-ogy, storage, and wealth accumulation. A change from com-munity to household levels of economic organization ob-served in several areas may have accompanied the transitionto agriculture, including a shift from communal sharing tofamilial or individual accumulation. Economic intensificationand competition were frequent companions of the Neolithicrevolution society (Price and Bar-Yosef 2010). Wealth accu-mulation and status differentiation appear at the individual,household, or lineage level.

    We were, however, unable to agree on the primacy of causalfactors or on the major issue of general versus specific ex-planation. The frustrations of explanation leave us askingquestions—many important questions were raised at the sym-posium. Beyond the specific details of local sequences, thenuances of plant and animal domestication, and concernswith the meaning of the evidence, certain larger questionsarose again and again. What determines where the first farm-ers appeared? What makes centers of origin special places?Why do humans domesticate plants and animals? Why aresome plants and animals selected for manipulation and notothers? Is the domestication process determined solely by thebiology of the selected species? What can we say about timing?How long does it take to domesticate plants and animals?How does the timing of this process interlace with develop-ments such as sedentism, population growth, and social in-equality? Why was agriculture such a successful adaptation?How does agriculture spread quickly to areas with differentcultures, climates, and environments? Can the spread of ag-riculture tell us about its origins? What spreads, people orthings? How do we best explain the origins of agriculture?

    Questions provide the right subject to end our introductionand enter the assembled essays that follow. Questions andcuriosity, of course, are inherent in the pursuit of knowledge;unanswered questions drive continuing research. Archaeologyis concerned with questions about the past. The origins ofagriculture is one of the most important and most obstinate.Yet we have no doubt that while it will be a long and arduousjourney, our search for answers will have a successful end.

    Our goal for the symposium was to develop and explorea rich and productive dialog among scholars from diversebranches of archaeology and related disciplines focused onthe beginnings of farming. Through the course of the sym-posium there was a growing respect and a leveling of bound-aries between the subdisciplines. There was lots of news—much information and inspiration. We believe that the par-ticipants in this symposium returned home with renewedoptimism about the state of research—both data and ideas—on the origins of agriculture. It is our hope that enthusiasmwill be conveyed through the continuing studies of the par-ticipants and will be passed to their colleagues and students.

    Climatic Fluctuations and Early Farming inWest and East Asia

    This paper presents a Levantine model for the origins of cultivation of various wild plants as motivatedby the vagaries of the climatic fluctuation of the Younger Dryas within the context of the mosaicecology of the region that affected communities that were already sedentary or semisedentary. Inaddition to holding to their territories, these communities found ways to intensify their food pro-curement strategy by adopting intentional growth of previously known annuals, such as a variety ofcereals. The Levantine sequence, where Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene Neolithic archae-ology is well known, is employed as a model for speculating on the origins of millet cultivation innorthern China, where both the archaeological data and the dates are yet insufficient to documentthe evolution of socioeconomic changes that resulted in the establishment of an agricultural system.

    Opening Remarks: Observationsand Statements

    The Neolithic Revolution, or the Agricultural Revolution, wasa major “point of no return” in human evolution. After 2.6million years of hunting and gathering, low population den-sities, and a series of dispersals to the edges of Eurasia andbeyond to the Americas and Australia, human societies de-veloped a new economic system that changed the course ofprehistory. Instead of survival based on foraging with partialor full-time residential and logistical mobility, the appearanceand disappearance of sedentary and semisedentary commu-nities, and episodes of genetic “bottlenecks,” the first farmingvillages in a limited number of regions led unintentionally toa revolutionary social upheaval. Although a few Late Pleis-tocene hunter-gatherers developed low-level food production,the people who started cultivating the wild species of the“winning” plants—those that feed the world of today (wheat,barley, rice, and corn)—were in retrospect responsible for therapidly increasing world population that led to the IndustrialRevolution.

    Before delving into the particular cases of West and EastAsia (fig. 1), where I believe the earliest manifestations of thissocioeconomic revolution were triggered by the impact of theYounger Dryas (YD), several issues, such as small-scale so-

    Although history was not recorded during the onset of theNeolithic Revolution, the foundations laid by early farmersunexpectedly led in due course to the invention of writingsystems. Indeed, in an evolutionary sense it was a set of rapidsocioeconomic changes. We should therefore refer to our datasets from the first half of the Holocene as the history of“people without names,” and like all historical documentsthey are amenable to different interpretations.

    Investigations into the reasons why people became farmersare not new. Since the nineteenth century, scholars havesearched for “where,” “when,” “how,” and “why” cultivationbecame an attractive survival strategy. Botanists such as Al-fonse de Candolle, Nikolai Vavilov, and Jack Harlan exploredthe natural habitats where the wild progenitors of domesti-cated plants were found, assuming that these were the “cen-ters” of plant domestications. The desire to find primordiallocations is still pertinent, as recent investigations in the Le-vant (e.g., Zohary and Hopf 2000) or the efforts to find thelocation of millet progenitors in East Asia (e.g., Lu et al. 2009)demonstrate.

    Historically, these natural habitats or their margins werethought by archaeologists to have been the “core areas” wherecultivation and domestication occurred (e.g., Binford 1968;Braidwood 1952; Flannery 1973). What seems to be a feasibleresearch target in the Levant because of its relatively smalldimensions and the large number of different schools of ar-chaeology involved in fieldwork is more complex in East Asia,where investigations began almost half a century later andwhere the core area is at least two to four times as large.Hence, using the primacy of the Levant, I discuss the role of“core areas” and refer to places into which agricultural systems

    were transmitted to as “secondary core areas.” For example,the Levant was the “core area” where the cultivation of wildcereals, also known as “predomestication cultivation” or “low-level food production” (e.g., Smith 2001) began and wherethese plants became the cultigens after more than 1,000 yearsof farming. These domesticated crops were introduced intoEurope and the Nile Valley, both “secondary centers.”

    The archaeological evidence for the initiation of cultivation,the corralling of wild herd animals, and the ensuing trans-mission of knowledge, techniques, plants, and animals, as wellas voluntary and/or forced movements of humans amongvillage-based societies, is characteristic of interregional con-nections. Short- and long-distance interactions did not alwaysoccur under stable environmental conditions. Paleoclimaticproxies from the Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocenerecord numerous fluctuations. Even minor shifts in local con-ditions, given the available technology and social structure ofhuman groups, could make the difference between successfulbiological survival and failure.

    In this paper, I suggest that at the two ends of the Asiancontinent, a climatic change was the main trigger for the onsetof cultivation (i.e., growing the progenitors of wheat, barley,rye, millet, and other grains) in a context of “low level foodproduction” (Smith 2001). This either evolved into majorfood production or failed (e.g., Weiss, Kislev, and Hartmann2006; Weiss and Zohary 2011). Hence, before delving into theclimatic, social, and economic evidence acquired from ar-chaeological investigations, we need to examine briefly thepast human experience in the face of abrupt climatic change.

    More than once during the Pleistocene, humans faced en-vironmental changes that improved, worsened, or did notaffect their basic ecological conditions. While we sometimestend to see these climatic changes as the causes for the ex-tinction of particular populations or eventual dispersals, theoverall picture is too coarse-grained. History, however, hastaught us different lessons. Slow or abrupt shifts of environ-mental conditions that resulted in social and economic dis-asters have been recorded (e.g., Bell 1971; Hassan 2002; Shen

    et al. 2007; Weiss and Bradley 2001). The impacts of droughts,harsh winters, flooding by rivers or the sea, failing harvests,famines, wars, spreads of disease, disturbances of the socialorder, and the demise of peoples are reasonably well docu-mented. Some societies were able to cope with or to minimizedisastrous effects, while others collapsed (Rolett 2008). Thechallenge for archaeologists is to find how humans handleda situation and either succeeded or failed in coping with theimpacts of natural calamities (Rosen 2007). When biologicalsurvival is critical for individuals or a group of people—beit a band, a macroband, or a tribe (using an approximatescale of population size; see Binford 2006; Hawkes and Paine2007; Marcus 2008; Roscoe 2008, 2009)—they will use a num-ber of strategies within their knowledge, depending on theresilience of their social structure and cultural concepts, toinsure their physical existence in the world.
