Only when we loveourselves in such a way can we knowwhat it means to really love another, nomore and no less. The legal aid movement and publicinterest litigation seek to bring justice tothese forgotten specimens of humanitywho constitute the bulk of the citizens ofIndia and who are really and truly the‘People of India’ who gave to themselvesthis magnificent Constitution,” wroteJustice P.N. Bhagwati in People’s Unionfor Democratic Rights v. Union of India(1982). “It is true that there are largearrears pending in the courts, but thatcannot be any reason for denying access tojustice to the poor and weaker sections ofthe community. No state has a right to tellits citizens that because a large number ofcases of the rich and the well-to-do arepending in our courts, we will not helpthe poor to come to the courts for seekingjustice until the staggering load of cases ofpeople who can afford is disposed off.

Passage 3

When protecting your reputation getsright of way over the fundamental right tofreedom of speech and expression, ourdemocracy may be derailed. Incriminalising defamation there is adisturbing disinterest in truth. Not onlydo you regard the mask to be moreimportant than the face, you also do notcare if the one accused of defaming theface is telling the truth. If a report revealsugly things about a powerful person, it isnot enough for the reporter to prove thathis facts are right. Only if he can provethat his revealing such ugly facts is in theinterest of the public, that it does somepublic good, will he be let off. So nevermind the national motto written incourtrooms – no “satyamevjayate” foryou.

It is vital, they declared, that theworld’s temperature does not climb muchmore than 1.5°C above pre-industriallevels; and yet they simultaneouslycelebrated a new climate agreement.

57. Which among the following is themost logical inference that can bemade from the above passage?

A. The new climate agreement did notdo much to prevent 1.5°Ctemperature rise.

B. It is difficult to contain thetemperature rise within1.5°C.

C. Developed countries have notprovided enough funds fordeveloping countries to adapt toclimate change.

D. 195 countries had sent intelligentrepresentatives in Paris.

Passage 5

The Earth is more than 4½ billion yearsold. It is very hot. In comparison, you cansee that the Sun is very, very hot. The Sungives us light and heat. It is the centre ofour Solar System. The Earth and otherplanets revolve around the Sun. The Sunalso gives out dangerous ultraviolet lightwhich causes sunburn and may causecancer. You need to be careful of the Sunand wear sunscreen and clothing toprotect yourself from its rays. Without theSun, there would be only darkness andour planet would be very cold andwithout liquid water. The Sun seems smallwhen you look at it in the sky during thedaytime, in the morning when it comesup, and in the evening at sunset. That isbecause the Sun is so far away. The Sun ismade up of gases: 75% hydrogen and 25%helium. Hydrogen is the simplest andlightest of all of the known elements. When you combine hydrogen withoxygen you get water.

Passage 1

Global Warming is the increase of Earth'saverage surface temperature due to effectof greenhouse gases, such as carbondioxide emissions from burning fossilfuels or from deforestation, which trapheat that would otherwise escape fromEarth. This is a type of greenhouse effect.

The most significant greenhouse gas isactually water vapor, not somethingproduced directly by humankind insignificant amounts. However, even slightincreases in atmospheric levels of carbondioxide (CO2) can cause a substantialincrease in temperature.

Why is this? There are two reasons: First, although the concentrations of these gases

are not nearly as large as that of oxygenand nitrogen (the main constituents of theatmosphere), neither oxygen or nitrogenare greenhouse gases. This is becauseneither has more than two atoms permolecule (i.e. their molecular forms are O2and N2, respectively), and so they lack theinternal Vibrational modes that moleculeswith more than two atoms have. Bothwater and CO2, for example, have these"internal vibrational modes", and thesevibrational modes can absorb andreradiate infrared radiation, which causesthe greenhouse effect

Secondly, CO2 tends to remain in theatmosphere for a very long time (timescales in the hundreds of years). Watervapor, on the other hand, can easilycondense or evaporate, depending onlocal conditions. Water vapor levelstherefore tend to adjust quickly to theprevailing conditions, such that theenergy flows from the Sun and re-radiation from the Earth achieve abalance. CO2 tends to remain fairlyconstant and therefore behave as acontrolling factor, rather than a reactingfactor. More CO2 means that the balanceoccurs at higher temperatures and watervapor levels

Combustion of Fossil Fuels, for electricitygeneration, transportation, and heating, and also the manufacture of cement, allresult in the total worldwide emission ofabout 22 billion tons of carbon dioxide tothe atmosphere each year. About a thirdof this comes from electricity generation, and another third from transportation, and a third from all other sources

C. Burning fossil fuels for electricitygeneration is the single biggestcontributor to the emission ofcarbon dioxide

D. None of the above

60. Consider the following statements1. Deforestation is not as big a

contributor to global warming asburning of fossil fuels.

2. It is essential for a gas to havethree atoms per molecule in orderto act as a greenhouse gas.

Which of the statements given aboveis/are correct?

A. 2 onlyB. 1 onlyC. Both 1 and 2D. Neither 1 nor 2

61. Consider the following statements:1. Nitrogen is the largest constituentof the atmosphere.2. Water Vapor is not produceddirectly by humankind in significantamounts.3. The internal vibrational mode islacking in case of oxygen andnitrogen molecules.

Which of these is/are correct according tothe passage?

A. 1 and 3 onlyB. 2 and 3 onlyC. 1 and 2 onlyD. 1, 2 and 3

Passage 2

There are some topics that create a buzz inthe country from time to time and heat upthe atmosphere, putting global warmingto shame. Did the ancient Indians knowquantum mechanics? Did they come upwith calculus? Some topics are outrightnonsense, but there are some that merit adebate. However, most of us are nothistorians, and such discussions becomepointless after a while. One has comeacross the names Aryabhata orVarahamihira in school textbooks, but onewould be hard pressed to name anyspecific achievement of these ancientIndian scientists. School students aretaught about the discovery of the zero butthey never learn what it means to have“discovered” it.

How does one suddenly invoke a numberand bring it down to the realm of reality? We teach our children that our ancestorsmust have had a remarkable knowledge ofmetallurgy and give the example of theiron pillar in Delhi, but we never spell outwhat exactly they knew. Thissuperficiality in our collective knowledgeoften leads to meaningless, rhetoricaldebates on the achievements of ancientIndian scientists. Some people believe thatthe Vedas contained everything worthknowing. And there are others whocontend that Indians were a barbaric lotbefore the Europeans arrived. Often, thesedebates take on a political flavour. Bysaying something in favour of ancientIndian scientists, one runs the risk ofbeing called jingoistic, while one might becalled unpatriotic or irreverent of one’sheritage if one chooses to criticise such aposition.

Recently, there were claims in the mediathat the important mathematical toolcalculus, instrumental in the advancement

of modern science, originated in Indiamuch before Isaac Newton or GottfriedWilhelm von Leibniz, who real storybehind the claim of calculus havingoriginated in India is as complicated as itis fascinating are usually credited with itsdevelopment. If the claim turns out to betrue, then much of what is known aboutthe history of Indian science will have tobe revised. But there has hardly been anydiscussion in the popular media outliningthe details of the arguments for or againstthe proposition. The apprehension thatone would be pigeonholed into either thejingoist camp or called unpatriotic stalksmuch of these discussions.

Another reason for skirting the details isthat there are as yet no black-and-whiteanswers to this question. The best answerprobably lies between a complete yes orno. One might think that this is adiplomatic answer, but the real storybehind the claim of calculus havingoriginated in India is as complicated as itis fascinating.

Passage 1

Malaria is a disease that develops when amosquito infected with a Plasmodiumparasite bites a person. Once it gets intothe bloodstream, the parasite invades andlives in a new host’s red blood cells (RBC).According to World Health Organization(WHO), malaria killed an estimated6,27,000 people in 2012, majority of themsub-Saharan African children under theage of 5. India has 12.8 crores suspectedmalaria cases.

Till now the only way to protect againstmalaria has been preventive – control ofthe mosquito breeding and protectionagainst mosquito bite using mosquito net

and mosquito-repellents. Once infected, the only treatments available areantimalarials such as chloroquine, quinidine, mefloquine, primaquine, etc.,but malarial parasites have developedresistances against many of these drugs, making them ineffective. Recently, aninternational team led by researchers at St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital,Memphis, USA has developed a newcompound that can remove the malarialparasite from blood very fast and thusmay slow down the development ofresistance to antimalarial drugs.According to the researcher, the newcompound tricks the host immune systeminto destroying only infected RBC whileleaving healthy ones alone.

Passage 2

“Our tradition teaches tolerance; ourphilosophy preaches tolerance; ourConstitution practises tolerance”

let us not dilute it.” Regrettably, over theyears, tolerance has been replaced by therising menace of intolerance which strikesat various fields of human endeavour andcreativity: writings, music, drama, paintings and movies. Intolerance stemsfrom an invincible assumption of theinfallibility of one‟s beliefs and adogmatic conviction about their rightness. An intolerant society cannot tolerateexpression of ideas and views whichchallenge its current doctrines andconventional wisdom. Consequently, unconventional and heterodox thoughtsand views have to be suppressed. That isthe prime motivation for censorship. Onecriterion to determine whether a countryis truly democratic is the extent of dissentpermitted. A liberal democracy is one inwhich all groups in the country accept thefact that in a free country, people can havedifferent opinions and beliefs and shallhave equal rights in voicing them withoutfear of legal penalties or social sanctions.Right to dissent and tolerance of dissentare sine qua non of a liberal democraticsociety. Today we have reached a stagewhere expression of a different point ofview is viewed with resentment andhostility and there are vociferous

Exhibition of movies is included in thefundamental right of freedom ofexpression guaranteed by theConstitution.
