2 Autumn 2012 . Canberra Southern Cross Club NEWS 40th Anniversary

As part of our ongoing commitment to reduce our carbon footprint, the Club has joined forces with Canberra owned company, Chemworks, to use cleaning products with the safest, most biodegradable and most sustainable type of ingredients.

According to Bruce Grimmond, Environmental Manager for the Canberra Southern Cross Club, “These products meet our superior standards of cleaning and hygiene along with a range of other important benefits.”

Bruce says these benefits include:

A cleaner environment. The range utilises sugar-based surfactants, biodegradable and non-phosphate water softeners, ethanol and softer acids, which have minimal environment impact but are just as effective as traditional cleaning products.

Safe for the user. Traditional industrial cleaning products contain toxic chemicals, some of which emit volatile organic compounds that can be extremely hazardous to the user, causing respiratory and dermatological problems.

Safe to handle. The ‘Extreme Green’ products significantly improve workplace Occupational Health and Safety by reducing the risks involved in transporting, handling and storing products.

“We’re extremely proud to be one of the leading pioneers of corporate green cleaning products in the ACT,” said Bruce. “It really is a win, win situation and we hope this paves the way for other organisations to replace traditional cleaning products with products that reduce hazards to their staff as well as the environment.”

40 years of community support As our 40th anniversary celebrations start to get into full swing, we have been reflecting on what we have achieved over the years – not just in terms of the increased range of services and facilities for our Members but in the communities we have created and supported.

Some of these communities were born out of the Club itself and continue to thrive today, carried on by generations of Members. The Club has also provided support to the greater community: sporting groups that motivate participants of all ages to ‘have a go’; social groups that encourage the development of skills and lifelong friendships; and charities that bring about positive change to people in need who live in the Canberra region.

In fact, just last year, we contributed $1,497,708.00 to these groups – a figure that significantly goes above and beyond our required contribution and that represents our philosophy of being a vital, integral and active participant in the Canberra community.

So as we celebrate throughout the year with fantastic dining specials, events and promotions, we will also look at how we can continue to enhance and improve the community in which we live in. After all, we also live and work in Canberra and want the same things for our growing city as our Members do.

I would also like to thank those Members who have written in with some wonderful stories of their experiences with the Club and invite those other Members who would also like to contribute, to do so. These stories and photos will be gathered together in a beautiful, commemorative book that will be available for purchase shortly after our Gala Anniversary event in August. Please send your stories and photos to [email protected]

In the meantime, I invite you to participate in the great line-up of celebratory events that we have on offer, especially those that pay tribute to the dining experiences that took place many years ago. Enjoy!

what members wore to the club:

The 1980s was the decade ‘Punk’ and ‘New Wave’ went mainstream. Fashion had a strong DIY aesthetic, with lots of mix and

match, bold clashes, underwear as outerwear. Androgyny was in. Hair was big - crimped, permed, and wildly coloured.

At odds with this was the growing trend for power dressing, characterised by huge shoulder pads and loud ties.

the decade th at Style forgot!

8 Autumn 2012 . Canberra Southern Cross Club NEWS 40th Anniversary

By 1980 the Club had become a major presence in the Canberra community with a greatly expanded member base. Meanwhile, Canberra underwent some significant extensions with Queen Elizabeth II officially opening the High Court of Australia in 1980, the Australian National Gallery in 1982 and Australia’s new Parliament House in 1988.

Australia was also expanding into the international arena. The decade started off with the infamous disappearance of baby Azaria Chamberlain at Uluru and the birth of the first Australian IVF baby. Bob Hawke stepped into power, Australia II won the America’s Cup, Paul Hogan’s ‘Crocodile Dundee’ movies put Australia on the map and in 1988 the Bicentennial of European settlement was celebrated with the whole world watching.

What Members did at the Club:People started to eat out more at restaurants in the 1980s with Australians spending

about 20% of their income on food.

The growing national trend of exploring French, Italian and

Mediterranean cuisine was fully encouraged by the Club Asian food was also on the increase.

Bread and potatoes, the main staple foods on the menu at the beginning of the decade, were replaced by more exotic dishes using pasta and rice as their foundation.

Discos were held for a range of age groups: from children and teenagers through to the 50+ “not so senior, members”. The ‘80s also saw the launch of the ‘Battle of the Bands’ at the Top of the Cross, which became a permanent fixture on Canberra’s nightlife scene for many years and secured the Club’s reputation as being the entertainment destination.

Movie nights continued to be a popular Member activity with adults watching ‘80s classics such as Wall Street, Rocky and all three of the Beverly Hills Cop movies, while children enjoyed ET, Ghostbusters and the daring adventures of Indiana Jones.

Sporting activities included Whilst sporting groups, such as darts, skiing and bowling continued to flourish, the Club became a pioneer of a fitness phenomenon that had taken the world by storm: Aerobics!

Lead by lycra-clad amazons Bev Robinson and Lex Taylor, Members grape-walked, kicked and shimmied their way into a new fitness dimension to an ‘80s soundtrack including ‘Do you wanna funk’, ‘Superfreak’ and ‘Funkytown’. Five Star Fitness became an aerobics mecca attracting the likes of the then federal MP Ros Kelly, along with rising stars in the fitness industry. In fact Five Star Fitness and its

team regularly won awards for their prowess in both regional and national competitions.

Five Star Fitness eventually gave way to the Southern Cross Health Club in 1995. But during its twelve year reign, Members had “an absolute ball whilst doing some serious workout sessions,” according to Lex Taylor who “loved every minute of it!”

what members remember

“We used to regularly attend the Family Seafood nights as they were a fantastic opportunity to educate our children on how to enjoy eating out. Both children would dress up and look forward to talking with the wonderful, friendly staff and ordering their favourite pink lemonade. I’m sure the experience has set them up for life. My son now lives in Washington and is planning to meet us in Paris where the whole itinerary is based on dining out. We’re also looking forward to attending the seafood nights with our daughter and her young family so that the tradition can continue.”

Club-supported program gains international recognition Since 2006, the Club has supported the Marymead Counselling Centre’s Circle of Security program. This 20 week intensive group counselling course helps build bonding and attachment between parents struggling to relate to their child and young children showing behavioural and emotional difficulties.

Professor Neil Boris from the New Orleans Tulane University Institute of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health is the latest in a number of internationally recognised experts in this field who have applauded the work of the program. Having recently visited Marymead, he praised the

work of the counselling service as being ‘world class’ for achieving significant change for children and their families early in the child’s life and before behavioural, emotional and relationship problems become too entrenched.

The Circle of Security Intervention has also been cited as a case example in the latest report of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council. The report to the Prime Minister examined the science of learning and referred to this program to improve parent child relationships as an example of approaches that foster the capacity of a child to learn.

Thanks to a dedicated donation from the Club of $90,0000 over three years for this program, in addition to their on-going funding to

general Marymead services, many families have had the opportunity to take part in the program that has led to a huge difference in relationships between parents and their children.
