Are You Satisfied?

When you first started locksmithing, how much

did you know? Are there things that you

wanted to learn? Where did you get your

information? The more you did as a locksmith,

the more you learned. We call that hands on

training. Did you ever have to teach someone else the things that you

know? By teaching, you actually learn more and learn it better. The

more you teach the more you will know and if you work out in the field

you will gain practical experience. Then you will know your subject

even better, inside - out, all the way. At what point did you get to the

point where you did not need to learn anything new? Have you ever

got to the point where you don’t need to learn anything else about any

subject? You have lost your appeal for the unknown. Your ability to

learn new things. Maybe you are just too tired. But are you really

satisfied? If you are not, come to the meetings and learn what really

happens in the locksmith field. See how you can make a difference.

It’s meeting time this Friday. See you there. We will have a board

meeting right after the regular meeting.

Your President,

Mike Middick, CML

The Office of Vice President

VP “Knots” Notes

When I first started writing this column this morning I thought

about calling it the “VP Knots” for only one reason. I took a

lot of hard hits this past month… It seem as if every job I did I

needed to protect my noggin. Here’s just one job in the life of

an automotive locksmith.

My customer called and ask me to come by, he had a Ford

Escape that the key wasn’t working correctly. After I get there

I grab the key and try it in the door and it was rough but

worked fairly well… So, the customer quickly corrected me

and told me “It’s not the door, it’s the ignition lock! I need a

new lock!” Then all the issues come out and of course it was

after I gave them a quote over the phone. Here is what he told

me after I tried the key in the door. The battery keeps going

dead, the key would not go all the way to the OFF position, I

had to wiggle the key really hard to get it out of my ignition

and the park light won’t turn off on my dash.

Now I am at the point where I need to try the key in the

ignition and I needed to do the wiggle trick to get it in but once

it’s in the lock, it turn freely. I get out and speak to the

mechanic about how the key is worn out and most likely the

lock has been damaged… but, after I do all these repairs the

problem will still be there. But because I am not a certified

mechanic, he does not believe me. After correcting the two

issues described he sticks the key in the lock and starts the car

and he thinks he is right in this matter, until I ask his to remove

the key. Now he thinks I screwed up the lock somehow and I

explain that he has an electrical problem. So I pull the lock and

Page 9: CSCLA PRESS · Locksmith Association Founded 1991 DISCLAIMER The CSCLA Press is the publication of the Central & Southern Colorado Locksmiths Association. Other locksmith organizations

CSCLA 9

show him the key is working correctly and comes out smooth

when it is not in the steering column.

Again I try explaining that it is an electrical issue and it is most

likely within the BTSI system (Brake, Transmission or Shifter

Interlock). At this point I can do no more and leave the jobsite

and of course they refused to compensate me, but all was not

lost, I knew I would be back.

Three days later I get a call from the same company and they

had a new lock from the dealer that needed to be keyed to fit…

you guessed it, a Ford Escape. This time I handle the work a

little different, I had them pay me if it worked or if it didn’t,

darned if it wasn’t quite a bit higher this time. I handed them

the lock and they handed me a check, but I hung around to see

who was right. If you guess the mechanic you would be

wrong. Yet for some reason he was willing to listen to the key

guy that doesn’t have but 20 plus years of experience.

I start by helping him unplug parts of the wiring harness under

and near the column. One at a time unplugging the brake

switches and trying to remove the key and plugging it back in.

This continues until we get to the micro switch that controls

the shifter. When we unplugged this part, the key removed

Page 10: CSCLA PRESS · Locksmith Association Founded 1991 DISCLAIMER The CSCLA Press is the publication of the Central & Southern Colorado Locksmiths Association. Other locksmith organizations

10 CSCLA

The Office of Vice President

Continued

easily. To test it I plugged it back in and the key stayed in

(would not go all the way to the OFF position to be removed).

The BTSI system keeps the key from being removed if the car

“Thinks” it’s not in the “Park” position.

The BTSI system is a big loop with power going through it, if

any of the parts of the system are not working correctly (has

power in the loop) the key will not go all the way into PARK

and the key cannot be removed. In this case they forcibly

removed the key from wear and tear on both the lock and key.

The end result of this ordeal was, they needed to replace that

micro switch, but the cost would be $800 to their customer or

as the mechanics suggested, they could just disconnect it. Why

is “Just disconnecting it” not the wise thing to do? Well, you

can now pull the key out while the car is still in gear and at 60

miles an hour, it’s probably not a good time to have your

steering column get locked up.
