CSCW: Objectives

To analyze the impact of a groupware system on the cooperative processes. This requires constructing an experiment and analyzing team interactions with both qualitative

and quantitative data analysis techniques ( project 1)

To design a groupware system that supports specific teamwork processes. This requires analyzing the process to be supported and understanding the relationship between groupware features (architecture and functionalities) and

cooperative processes. ( project 2)

Workflow vs Knowledge Managment

1. “In June, I sent my paper to Peter, the InstructionalScience editor, who sent it to Hans, Kluwer’s manager, who was supposed to send it to the reviewers, but it somehow get lost.”

2. “Over the last 10 years, the CRAFT members have published many papers here and there but we don’t have a place were we can find easily for instance the ones that concern science education.”

3. “Most software we produced in our lab is available for free but the PhD student who developed it is gone and has not really documented his code.

4. “The request for opening your email account was sent to your lab director but she was in holidays. When she came back, she approved the account opening but then I was in holidays. This is why it took longer than expected.”

1. “In this forum, the most interesting messages are posted in German.”

2. “In this forum, most messages are posted by two persons who actually lead the group.”

3. “The time to process a call is lower in help desks that include a knowledge management component.”

4. “Adding video conferencing did not improve the accuracy of diagnosis within distributed group of doctors.”

5. “Pairs who were more symmetrical obtained lower car times in the traffic simulation.”

CSCW Take Home MessageCSCW Take Home Message1. Errors:

• Media Richness is the solution• Text is knowledge

2. Challenges: • Mediating informal interactions among distributed teams• Invent ethical uses of locative media and awareness tools

3. Trends: • Back to real, to things, more physical (roomware, tangibles,

…)• In physical space (locative media)

4. Methods: – Soft but not more; as rigorous as it make sense– Zoom inside the collaboration process
