FROM OUR PRESIDENT

What a year it was! In celebrating our 90th anniversary, we had an opportunity to look back at the rich history of Columbus Speech & Hearing Center. The Columbus League for the Hard of Hearing was established on June 26, 1923. The old photographs and handwritten journals tell a wonderful story of an organization that has made a difference in the lives of so many people over the years. Over the decades, programs and services evolved based on the needs of the community. Speech services were added in the 1950s and the Comprehensive Program for the Deaf began in the 1970s. Programs and funding sources have changed over time as well. So in addition to looking back and honoring our past, the board and staff spent much of 2013 looking forward. We spent six months analyzing everything we do to get a better understanding of what’s working, what’s needed by the community and what aligns most closely with our core mission. The recommendations from this work will be implemented in 2014. We believe Columbus Speech & Hearing Center’s longevity is the direct result of the forward thinking of our leaders over the last 90 years. It’s also because of the many, many people who have contributed their time, talent, resources and ideas. You are a part of our story and our success. As always, we’d like to thank you sincerely for your continued interest in and support of Columbus Speech & Hearing Center. And, we’re already talking about our 100th anniversary. Monday, June 26, 2023. Mark your calendar!

Columbus Speech & Hearing Center has seen a lot of change over the last 90 years. And we know there is more to come in the future. So to help the organization prepare for the changes that are anticipated in the future, we launched the Please Hear Us initiative. Please Hear Us is an effort to reach out to individuals and corporations to tell them about the great work that we do and how it impacts the people we serve. It is also an opportunity talk about what we need to continue to provide important services to the community.

The Please Hear Us initiative has three areas of focus:• Early Matters. While we serve people

of all ages, early identifi cation and treatment is at the core of our mission. That’s because detecting and treating a child’s speech and hearing issues early in life exponentially improves their odds for academic success and the opportunity to become a self-reliant, independent adult.

• Capital Improvements Fund. We have the best experts on staff and they pour their hearts into their work every day to make a difference for others. But great people alone won’t get the job done. We need to maintain our facility, equipment and technology so that our clients and staff have a safe, comfortable environment and the tools they need for success.

• The STAR Fund for Organizational Excellence. Our dedicated, talented staff is what makes Columbus Speech & Hearing Center such a special place. Our people are our greatest assets and we need to invest in them to ensure we have the very best staff in a competitive market.

We are so grateful to those ambassadors who were the very fi rst to host Please Hear Us Events in our honor:

• Michael & Karen Louge• Roland & Stacey Tokarski• Jill Kingsley• Diane Keeler• Jack & Anne Partridge

If you are interested in hosting a Please Hear Us Event on our behalf – please let us know by contacting Jennifer Wood at (614) 261-5418 or [email protected].

Now a happy, healthy young woman, a new homeowner, a wife, and a new mother, you may never believe that Jamie once had many struggles.

With a father in the Air Force, Jamie’s beginning was anything but ordinary. She was born while they were stationed in Turkey. In the fi rst two weeks of her life, Jamie traveled from Turkey to Israel, then to Germany because of birth complications. Her mother knew something still wasn’t right so they moved back to the United States when Jamie was about one and her father was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Even after complications at birth, it wasn’t until Jamie was two years old that she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and then endured several surgeries. As she grew, so did her challenges. In the 90s, there were not many public programs for young people with disabilities. Jamie’s parents made sacrifi ces so she could attend private school and receive the services that she needed. This sparked a lifelong desire to work with individuals with disabilities. Jamie never let anything hold her back. She graduated from high school and enrolled in college at Rio Grande University.

Four years later, Jamie earned her degree in Behavioral and Social Sciences and was connected with Maggie Shiveley, CPD Employment Specialist. Maggie set Jamie up with a Community Based Assessment. This assessment, a service of Columbus Speech & Hearing, provides information about Jamie’s aptitudes, abilities and preferences to determine if a specifi c employment opportunity would be a good match. Only days after graduation, Jamie started a temporary position at Lawrence County Board of Developmental Disabilities. “That got her foot in the door and she was successfully placed because of that and because she’s just so awesome,” boasts Maggie. “They fell in total love with her right away,” she added. Jamie quickly learned the ropes and excelled in her position as Assistant Administrator. In less than a year, Jamie was promoted from Assistant to Service Administrator. When asked about fi nally working in her dream job, Jamie couldn’t be happier, “I love it. I love working with individuals. It’s wonderful.”

And she has no plans of stopping there! Jamie’s goal is to continue to pay it forward – by working with individuals with disabilities, and fi nd the balance between her career and her new family.

AUDIOLOGY

Noah was born a healthy baby, with no complications. He passed all the newborn tests given, including the hearing screening.

But by 18 months, his parents began to notice that he wasn’t speaking as well as other children his age. By the time of his 3 year appointment, he still could not articulate his wants and needs. They were directed to Columbus Speech & Hearing Center.

Noah’s fi rst appointment was a hearing evaluation. The Grimmetts expected it to be uneventful, and already looked toward the speech assessment. Within the fi rst 15 minutes of the appointment, the diagnosis was clear. Noah was diagnosed with mild hearing loss, which he most likely had since birth. “As you can imagine, we were in shock,” said Mr. Grimmett. “We couldn’t believe it. Everything went through our minds: How did we not notice? How was this not caught at the hospital? Is it too late? Dr. Emily eased our minds. She reminded us that he is only 3, and with the right tools he will be just fi ne.” Noah was fi tted with hearing aids specifi c to his hearing loss giving him access to the sounds he wasn’t able to hear before.

Often, children with hearing loss don’t sing songs or even follow nursery rhymes. Noah was no exception. In fact, in preschool when Noah was asked to join music time he would watch but never participate. Once he received his hearing aids, it was a different story. After only 2 months Noah starred in his fi rst preschool play. Not only was he on stage with his friends, he was singing and dancing. “It was a joy to see,” Mr. Grimmett beamed. “We were so proud.”

The reality is, hearing aids will be with Noah for his entire life and he has a big life ahead of him. With school, sports, college, and beyond, his hearing needs will certainly change. That is why the Grimmetts are so grateful for Dr. Emily and the Center. “We want to express our thanks to the staff at Columbus Speech & Hearing. They are dedicated to their profession and to the success of their patients. Because of them, Noah and countless others are living in a better world. There will be daily challenges Noah will have to overcome, but we know that we have caring and dedicated professionals ready to help when we need them.”

Because of your gift, Noah went from watching to participating.

Braylen

SPEECHTHERAPY

When Braylen was 3 years old, he could barely communicate. At an age when most children are talking about anything and everything, he wasn’t saying very much. In fact, he could say a few words consistently, like “ball,” and a few scripted phrases, like “I don’t wanna.” His mother turned to Columbus Speech & Hearing Center for help.

Braylen was scheduled for a speech-language evaluation, in which a licensed and certifi ed therapist determines the communication ability of a child by assessing receptive and expressive language, social, articulation, oral motor, voice, and fl uency skills. The speech-language evaluation is key in determining defi cits and creating a treatment plan. Ginny, our Speech-Language Pathologist noted that during the evaluation, Braylen was observed to use mostly babble talk, minimal real words, and a few gestures for things like “eat” or “drink.” Braylen was diagnosed with Severe Expressive Language Disorder. Although they generally understand what is said to them, children with expressive language delays often do not talk much, they may forget words, and have trouble making complete sentences. He began individual speech therapy sessions right away.

According to his mother, Ginny was totally tuned into whatever worked best for Braylen. Therapy was based on what he was interested in at any given time. Braylen really enjoyed practicing between sessions with his favorite therapist from videos his mother had taped during therapy sessions. As a full time nurse, Braylen’s mother vowed to do whatever she had to do to keep him in speech therapy. The whole family worked together not only to bring him to each session but also to encourage him to practice. After a short time, he was exploding with words, so much so that he developed a mild stuttering disorder. Ginny and Braylen worked on fl uency, the fl ow in sounds, syllables, words and phrases in speech. They also worked on rhyming words and reading to help him in school.

Now, he has such a large vocabulary, it’s impossible to even count the number of words he can say! He speaks in long sentences and has completely age-appropriate language skills. His mother says, “He’s doing so well, it’s like he’s a different kid.” Braylen is fi nished with speech therapy, has just graduated from kindergarten and is very excited to begin fi rst grade.

Because of your gift, Braylen is now an

articulate, animated fi rst-grader.
