    METHODOLOGY

Its funny how nave science fiction writers were. They assumed we would be onthe same level as aliens that our battles would be fought on even ground. They egotistically thought that humans might even have an edge for our specialupbringing on Earth.

ut space is big. !eally big. y the time" we finally found a way to #uic$lytraverse it" we figured out the truth. %pace isnt the biggest boundary separatingalien civili&ations.

The universe formed '( billion years ago" and its been habitable for much ofthat time. In comparison" our ape ancestors only appeared a few tens ofmillions of years ago" and weve only been able to reach out into the void forabout a hundred years now.

Time is the boundary that truly separates life. Its li$ely that in the whole )il$y *ay" there is no alien race that is e+actly on our technology level. There areperhaps millions of races that are eons behind us" and many more that are ,ust

as far ahead. %ome aliens are but ants to us. If we desired" we could crush them without a second thought. -ther aliens" however" are gods. Their technologicalcapability is beyond our understanding" beyond anything we could ever dream.

*ith such technological disparity" it seems almost inevitable that the universe isone giant game of predator and prey. s a young species ,ust entering thegalactic community" we are prey to all and predator to none. %ome men dreamof finding worlds that we can coloni&e" worlds where we can be the predators"

but they dont reali&e that were millions" even billions of years behind.

/ntil recently" we believed that maybe were late bloomers" billions of years late that maybe we dont have a place in this universe. If the universe is cold andunforgiving" the old and strong swallowing up the younger" wea$er species" whatchance did we have0 *ith such powerful alien civili&ations already in power

around the gala+y" how could we even ma$e it a hundred years without beingcrushed by a superior force0

1our days ago" an alien species of un$nown origin entered the solar system.

Their ships were incomprehensibly fast" and their strange weaponry torethrough our defenses with little to no resistance. In a matter of minutes" thehuman defense was shattered. *e were bro$en and vulnerable. The Earth andher colonies were ripe for the ta$ing" a useful colony world to these dominantaliens.

They descended upon our colonies" rounding us up in billions. They vapori&edour structures and facilities and built their own. t this moment" we $new there

was nothing special about us. *e were a small" insignificant species whose fate was at the mercy of this superior race.

ut then they arrived. *e called them the rbiters" even though we never sawone in person. They sent one ship" the si&e of a small car. t this sight" theinvaders scattered and ran" abandoning their pro, ects and leaving our solarsystem. ut they were too slow for the rbiter ship in an instant" it unleashed whatever arcane forces it had at its command" and the invaders completely

disappeared. -ur planets somehow reverted to their pre2invasion state" andindeed the only remaining evidence of the invasion was in our memories.

It was at that moment that we understood. This was how the prey survived. This was how civili&ations were allowed to form.

It was at that moment that we made the choice. *e abandoned our dreams ofcon#uest and victory. *e wouldnt become invaders. *e would become rbiters.
