CHARLESTON SOUTHERN SUMMER MUSIC CAMP Charleston Southern University’s Horton School of Music is proud to sponsor Summer Music Camp for students in grades 4 through 12. Campers may participate in Senior Band, Junior Bands, Senior Chorus, Junior Chorus, String Orchestra, Piano Camp or Music Theatre during the weeklong session. Charleston Southern is situated just minutes from historic Charleston, South Carolina. The University is acclaimed annually in national publications as one of the best colleges in the South and is fully experienced in summer camp operations, hosting thousands of campers annually. I encourage my child to participate in the CSU Summer Music Camp. I agree to

support all camp rules and regulations. I understand that final ensemble placement

decisions rest with the ensemble directors and camp director and agree to abide

by those placements. I understand that the Music Camp staff will make every effort

to accommodate rooming requests, but that roommate arrangements cannot be

guaranteed. I further agree that Summer Music Camp has permission to use any

photographs or video taken during camp in future advertising. I assume financial

responsibility for health care costs including the cost of any medication, x-rays, lab

work or hospitalization.

REFUND POLICY - You may cancel your application for Summer Music Camp and

receive a refund less $50.00 (nonrefundable deposit) only if the request is made prior to two weeks before the beginning of camp. No money will be refunded for any reason after the two week deadline. Students arriving late for camp or leaving

early are not eligible for monetary compensation. The $50 registration deposit is not refundable for any reason.

HOUSING, MEALS & SUPERVISIONDorm campers will be housed in CSU dormitories. Dorm and day campers will eat all meals in the CSU Dining Hall. Campers must bring their own sheets, towels and pillow from home. Campers will be housed two or three per room. Friends who wish to room together should plan to go through the Monday afternoon registration line at the same time. Housing for Saturday night, at the end of camp, is not provided.

Meals begin Monday evening after check-in and end with dinner on Saturday - 16 meals in all. All meals will be served cafeteria style, and students will be allowed to eat as much as they wish at every meal with a wide variety of choices.

While staying in the residence halls, all camp students will be under the careful supervision of the Music Camp Staff. Counselors will live in the dormitories and assist with all rehearsals and daytime

activities in order to closely monitor all aspects of camp life.

HEALTH CAREIn the event of an illness or injury to a camper, the staff will contact parents and escort that student to the health care facility of choice for prompt, professional medical care. Several fine facilities are adjacent to campus, including Trident Medical Center and walk-in clinics. Costs resulting from medical care, medication, x-rays, or lab work are the responsibility of the parent. In the unlikely event that a student would need hospital care, immediate transportation would be arranged. Costs resulting from hospital treatment are the responsibility of the parent.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONAfter your application has been received and accepted, we will forward additional material to you. This will include check-in times on Monday afternoon, what to bring, a medical history and permission for treatment form, a map, a sample schedule, and all the other information needed to plan your trip.

HOST SCHOOL & LOCATIONCharleston Southern University is one of the largest accredited, private universities in South Carolina. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the University offers 48 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate degree programs and enrolls over 3,600 students. Founded in 1964, Charleston Southern is located just minutes from beautiful Charleston, S.C. The campus is convenient to many summer recreation activities, including area beaches, historic downtown Charleston and Fort Sumter, Lowcountry attractions, and the neighboring regions of Hilton Head, Savannah, Georgia, and the S.C. Grand Strand.

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENTCampers will enjoy the use of state-of-the-art facilities while at Charleston Southern. Whittington Hall, one of the newest buildings on campus, includes classrooms, faculty studios, a large rehearsal hall, percussion studio, practice rooms, instrument storage and library space, a computer lab, and two piano/MIDI keyboard labs.

Music Camp rehearsals and activities will also be housed in the Lightsey Music Building and Lightsey Chapel Auditorium, a spacious and well-equipped concert venue that seats an audience of 1550 people. Comprehensive recreation facilities will be available to campers, including a swimming pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, weight rooms, ping-pong and lounge and snack bar areas in the adjacent Brewer Center and Buc Park.

Each band and orchestra student will be expected to furnish his or her own instrument and bring a folding metal music stand. Only concert percussion equipment and pianos will be available from the Horton School of Music.

PIANO CAMPPiano Camp will be available to students from grades six through 12 who have performed on piano for at least two years. Instruction in technique, literature, musicianship, ensemble performance and theory will be a part of the camp. Each piano camp student will receive four half-hour private lessons during the camp and will also participate by singing in a mixed chorus. Total price for the Piano Camp is $400, which includes lessons. Piano campers should bring at least three pieces of standard literature (no pop arrangements, please) to camp, two of which should be

performance ready.

PRIVATE LESSONSPrivate Lessons are available on each instrument and for voice and piano. The fee for a half-hour lesson is $25 and may be elected by any camp student. Full hour lessons are available to students in grades 8-12, and the cost is $50. (Private lessons are required for piano campers.) Band, orchestra or voice students with previous piano experience, regardless of age, may elect to receive a one hour piano lesson in addition to vocal or instrumental lessons. The fee for a one hour piano lesson for band or choir students is $50.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

SUMMER MUSIC CAMP

Charleston Southern University’s Horton School of Music is proud to sponsor Summer Music Camp for students in grades 4 through 12. Campers may participate in Senior Band, Junior Bands, Senior Chorus, Junior Chorus, String Orchestra, Piano Camp or Music Theatre during the weeklong session.

Charleston Southern is situated just minutes from historic Charleston, South Carolina. The University is acclaimed annually in national publications as one of the best colleges in the South and is fully experienced in summer camp operations, hosting thousands of campers annually. Leading music educators from the region will join the Horton School of Music faculty and Summer Music Camp staff to provide both a quality musical experience and fun week for all campers.

From Monday afternoon registration through the end of camp on Saturday, campers will enjoy a nonstop mix of ensemble rehearsals, masterclass and sectional rehearsals, structured recreation, and evening entertainment and social activities. In addition to ensemble rehearsals, campers will also have the option of receiving a half-

hour or hour private lesson if desired.

Saturday evening recitals and concerts will conclude the camp, with performances by all campers. The performances are free and open to the public, with family and friends of music campers encouraged to attend. Join us for this exciting week of Summer Music Camp!
