25 CT’ers from all over the nation come back to Camp for Alumni Work Weekend

J eff Miller came in from Oregon after 30 years of being away. Fred Clark is 93 and lifted, kicked, and

threw a few things while cleaning the old woodshop! Bill Roberts took a bus from NYC after 40 years

out. Joel Dragelin brought the family...the stories of the 25 CT’ers whom made it back for Work

Weekend shows that Sense of Tecumseh Service instilled in us all.

Projects included cleaning the Barn and original woodshop,

we painted and hung the

swinging beam on the main

entrance. Friday morning Mr.

G. had us clear the ditch be-

tween the Opera House and

the Farmhouse, which may or

may not have been a ―priority‖

project, but as we were all

reminded, it didn't matter

because Mr. G asked us to do it, so we did it. We built a brand new Golf

Shed...way to go Jeff and Hank! Behind Lee Allman and his chainsaw, crews

cleared trails and exposed the rock walls lining both entrances to Camp. We

slept in the Senior Tents (some in more comfy nearby accommodations), we

eat meals in the Dining Hall (with each Alum introducing themselves and

giving a message to the Staff at their first meal), we held a BBQ on the Lodge

porch on Friday, and closed out with a BBQ with the entire Staff on Saturday

night—only to get an outgoing, ―Tecumseh, Tecumseh, Tecumseh-Alumni,

Alumni, Alumni‖ cheer from the Staff!

A few have sent some feedback about their experience coming back to Camp for a few days:

“Though called a work weekend, it really was a great

vacation. Within minutes after arriving at CT, I felt as if I

had never left.”

“A wonderful weekend to reconnect and make new friends.

The Work Weekend needs to become a yearly event. As you

heard during the days, Camp has the same effect on almost

all the alumni...it is part of us all and we love to give back

to CT.”

“Really worthwhile to spend even few hours getting things

in shape. Getting rid of unneeded things from the barn is like cleaning my cellar, it feels good to see free

space and no decisions about keeping junk. Meeting several grand kids of fellows from years ago was espe-

cially gratifying - seeing another generation getting the Tecumseh spirit.”

“I heard a couple things this weekend that really resonated. The first was a comment about the Camp not try-

ing to change things. The place is special because a kid that wakes up in a cabin and goes throughout his dai-

ly routine will have nearly the same experience that a kid who went there 30 years ago. Why change an expe-

rience that will challenge and benefit a kid, not only on the athletic field, but in a system that teaches person-

al responsibility? I think the rustic feel really keeps you grounded and makes you appreciate life when you

get home and sleep in your bed on August 14th”.

Yes, we went back to Camp, and we realized that it has not changed...it is still the same great experience that

Fred Clark had in the 30’s, Bill Hamilton had in the 40’s, Bill Roberts had in the 60’s, Jeff Miller had in the

70’s, Toebe Hinckle had in the 80’s, Tim Lilley had in the 90’s, and Grant Van Ranst had in the 00’s. Perhaps

the most significant thought that came from the weekend is this: We all own Camp, and it is only as great as

we all want it to be. Until next time... MORE PICS HERE

Through recent Alumni events, it’s evident how long its been since many of us were involved with Camp. The time

away, combined with the fact that many never really thought about Camp in the terms of being an actual structural

organization with the Board of Trustees at the top, not to mention a 501c3 non-profit organization, gives us a differ-

ent perspective on Camp. Many of you are interested about the internal workings of Camp, so it was brought to our

attention that we should use a section of the Newsletter to shed some light on various Board related items.

We will use this first time to bring you up to speed on the fact that we are indeed a 501c3 non-profit organization

and rely solely upon tuition income and (tax-deductible) contributions to run Camp each summer. Think of us as the

same as your high schools, colleges and universities, the Red Cross, etc. We are accepting, and reliant, of the same

vehicles of support you would provide those organizations:

On June 15th in Conshohocken, PA, Dan Lebo, Peter Strid, Brett Miller, and Chris Bozzi

organized a gathering here in Philly to honor Pancho’s memory. The pic below, a big shot of Pancho

smiling that reads ―Panchito‖, with a white frame around it which those in attendance wrote a note

and signed, will be placed in the Beam Shack when Lebo comes up over Tecumseh Weekend. We

will end up with about $1,000 in contributions to the Mazza Fund from the event. It was a

meaningful gathering and Pancho’s friends won’t let his memory fade! More pics HERE.

Lebo, Brett, Chris, and Peter – GREAT JOB!

Hello from sunny New Hampshire!

As you’ve read by now, Alumni Work Weekend was a great success and on behalf of the

staff and campers, thanks for everyone’s efforts to get here and accomplish such great

work. Aside from the actual work, it was a great thing to watch the Alums interact with the

current staff and connect various generations of CT. It was evident throughout the

weekend that the sense of service and loyalty to Tecumseh stays in all those that have

spent time at the Greatest Place on Earth!

The first weeks of the 2011 season could not have gone better! Camp is full and bustling with activity. Some

highlights from the first weeks include:

Another increase in enrollment, New instruction and trips in canoeing and rock

climbing, The return of National Hall of Fame fencing coach, Cathy McLellan,

four times weekly Will Powers, our Rifle instructor, who has reconditioned and

upgraded our rifle program, A new ―bouldering cave‖ in the farmhouse and an

additional new climbing wall, A ten mile canoe trip for the Seniors with instruc-

tors Dave Henry and Andrew Vinnenberg. They will take out canoeing expedi-

tions all summer long – some for one day and some for overnights. Rookie, Jun-

ior and Senior basketball leagues in full swing.

Probably the highest highlight of the week was the opening of our intramural Blue-Gray competition. Senior

Counselor Bob Glascott, gave a biographical sketch of former director,

the legendary George Munger, for whom our new indoor facility is

named. Bob’s dedication was followed by an overtime basketball game

attended by the entire Camp and the place was rocking! What an opening

for Munger Hall! (Pics of the

building HERE)

Looking ahead: Brian Dougherty, CT alum, All-American and US

National Team lax Goalkeeper arrives July 9 for two weeks! Erik

Weihenmayer, CT alum and the only blind man to climb the world’s

tallest peaks, will be here July 15-20. (More on Erik HERE)

Finally, continue to keep connected to Camp Tecumseh and give

consideration to the Blue-Gray Fund, as there are campers here that

would not be here without that support. Thanks again, and try to make a visit to Camp!
