other species such as sole (Solea senegalensis), yelow tail (Seriola dumerili), meagre (Argyrosomus regio) and bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) are also cultured. Production of Gilthead sea bream (S. aurata) and European sea bass (D. labrax) in 2010 was 6020 Tm from both species, which represents 18% of the 32800 Tm cultured in Spain.

In this context, Ctaqua, the Aquaculture Technology Centre of Andalusia, was created to respond to the research, development and innovation needs of the aquaculture sector in Andalusia.

Aquaculture in Andalusia is an important activity that includes a wide range of species, culture systems and practices. Freshwater aquaculture in Andalusia is focused on trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), sturgeon (Acipenser sturio and Acipenser nacarii) and red crab (Procambarus clarkii), standing out the organic production of trout and sturgeon in Granada. Concerning seawater aquaculture, two different fish production systems are in use: earthen ponds (Atlantic zone) and offshore cages (Mediterranean area). In both cases, the main species are Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), although

Ctaqua (Aquaculture Technology Centre of Andalusia) was founded on October 2, 2007. In May 7, 2008, Ctaqua was legally recognized as Foundation and inscribed in the Andalusian Foundation Registry. Also in 2008 Ctaqua was recognized as Agent of the Andalusian Knowledge System.

As Foundation, Ctaqua counts with a Patronage, from which 80% are aquaculture producing companies, feed companies and other industry related enterprises, as well as governmental institutions and universities.

In 2010, Ctaqua has implanted the ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004, (Quality Management System and Environmental Management System) as well as the UNE 166002:2006 standard for its R&D Management System.

Ctaqua has experimental facilities equipped with recirculation systems for growing marine and freshwater species, under controlled temperature/photoperiod conditions in tanks from 100 to 1200 L. We also count with recirculation system for crustacean culture, mollusk facility and fitoplancton/zooplankton lab.

Specialized analyses and services are contracted through our networking with expertise from various universities, institutes and private companies. Production of aquaculture feeds at experimental or commercial scale is organized through our close links with the feed industry.
