Facebook is theinternet-based social*networking site that hastaken over* the English-speaking world. Itcurrently has over 69
million active memberswho come mainly fromthe US, Canada,Australia and the UK,with 100,000 newmembers reported to besigning up every day. So,what is Facebook andwhat makes it sopopular? And what arethose dark clouds onthe horizon?
HHiisstt oorryyFacebook w as founded* by Mark
Zuckerberg, a student of Harvard
Universit y in the US, in February
2004. It w as originally set up* for
Harvard students to meet and keep
in touch with each other, but i t soon
became so popu lar that it wasopened up t o other US universit ies
and now it is open to anyone in the
world over the age of 13 who has a
valid* email address. The site allow s
networks organised into groups such
as the place where you live,
workplace, school, interests and so
on, to connect and int eract w ith
each other. The company is now said
to be worth billions of do llars, but
Mark Zuckerberg is in no hurry to
sell to one of t he big Internet namessuch as Microsoft. He says You can
tell, from our history and what w e
have done, that w e really wanted to
keep the company independent.
They may offer t he company for
public sale in the fut ure.
WWhhaatt ddoo yyoouu ddoo oonn FFaacceebbooookk??You can set up your own personal
prof ile on Facebook by uploading a
photo of yourself, writ ing about
your int erests, uploading your blog
and so on. It is a way of keeping in
touch* wit h your f riends, making
new f riends and catching up w ith
old ones. One of t he most popular
features of fered by Facebook is the
photo album where you can post
your photos, choosing whether you
only want your f riends to see them
or g iving f ree access for anyone to
see them.
Facebook gives you the chance to
tell your friends and acquaintances*personal news, keep up to date wit h
social events, and jo in a huge variet y
of networks. These netw orks can
give you access to anyone on
Facebook from old school friends or
you can make virt ual fr iends wit h
similar interests to you.
FFaacceebbooookk aanndd tt hheePPrr iivvaaccyy PPrroobb lleemmOne of the difficulties that peoplehave discovered in using th is new
service is the problem of privacy. It
can be quite easy for anyone to read
the information you have put on
your prof ile and there are concerns
about identity theft. An unexpected
problem has been when Facebook
users have applied for jobs, potential
employers have been able to look at
their Facebook prof iles wit h
embarrassing consequences. You
may not want just anyone finding
out about t he mad things you did as
a student ! The Facebook team have
been improving the site to t ry to
address these problems, but
Zuckerberg emphasises personal
responsibi lit y. People are learning
how to use the site and what s OK to
share. As time goes on, people w ill
learn whats appropriate, whats safe
for t hem and learn to share
accordingly.
It is easy to see why t he site is so
popular and so excit ing t o use, but,
as with any website which has public
access, it is wise to be careful what
you decide to tell the world!

The rooms themselves have exposed
beams*, painted white walls, and
cracked concrete floors, creating an
informal ambiance* so t hat t he art
it self seems wonderf ull y accessible
as though there were no barrier
between viewer and art like the one
that exists in so many contemporary
museums and galleries.
The third and f ourth floors are
connected by a narrow staircase*
which emphasizes the distance
between the tw o and heightens the
visitors anticipation. At the top of
the stairs, a narrow space links the
staircase to the gallery. One more
step and t he visitor is released int o ahuge exhibi ti on area. The New
Museum is an experi ence as well as a
museum. Crit ics have carped* that ,
like so many recent museum
renovations and expansions, the New
Museum seems to be more about the
building than t he art. We recommend

The Big Applesnewest museum, called The New
Museum, has a newhome. Of course, thisbegs* the question Does Manhat tanreally need anothermuseum? The cityalready has nearly1,000 art galleries,
most devoted tocontemporary art , andfabulous museumslike the Museum ofModern Art , theWhit ney, and on andon. But the NewMuseum hassomething completelynew: a rather splendidpermanent home, inaugurated last falland designed by aJapanesearchitectural f irmcalled Sanaa. Its thehottest architectural
t icket in town. Letstake a look.
The New York
The f irst and onl y museum in New
York City devoted t o contemporary art
art in t he now the New M useum
has no permanent collection. Nor has
it had, since its founding in 1977, a
permanent home. Now, home is a
seven-story bui lding that opened last
fall. Located in the Bowery, an old and
run-dow n area of the cit y, the 60,000-
square-foot New Museum building
(built at a relat ively modest cost of
$50 million) stands between the dirty
brick f acades of a few restaurant-
supply stores (once the main
businesses located in the area). It i s
smack in the middle of a forgot ten
landscape and a new one, fo r just a
few blocks west are SoHos* glit zybout iques* and show rooms. The New
Museum wanted a place in what was
left of t he downt own art scene a
revival of history: t he uninhibit ed
characters, seedy* sett ings,
voyeuristi c* att ractions and, above all,
rejection of bourgeois tastes, all
typical of contemporary art and
artists.
The architects have designed the
building as a series of mismatched*galleries. The result? An unusual
structure w hose floors shif t back and
fort h like a pile of boxes stacked*
carefull y and encased* in a protecti ve
armour of shimmering* aluminium
mesh* backed by a second l ayer* of
metal panels, giving the surf ace a
subtle depth.
The design seems to bring the
museums art to life. At the inaugural
show of contemporary sculpt ure last
fall, the w alls were left entirely bare, creating shifting moods in rooms that
encouraged visitors to view t he
sculpt ures from unexpected
perspectives.

BBaacckkggrroouunnddLewis comes from a mixed family, his mother is white British
and his father, black British (Lewiss paternal grandparents
emigrated to the UK from Grenada in the 1950s). He was
named Lewis after the great US sprinter* Carl Lewis. He has
tw o half-sisters and a younger half-brother, Nicholas, who has
cerebral palsy* .Lewis loved motor sports from a young age. His father,
Anthony, encouraged Lewiss passion for racing, buying him a
go-cart* for his sixth birthday, but he had to work hard at
school t oo. Lewiss father helped to f inance his sons racing
career, sometimes taking as many as three jobs to find enough
money for t his expensive sport , and he sti ll managed to watch
his sons races. Lewis Hamilt on is one of the few F1 drivers who

In 1998, Ron Dennis signed Lewis up t o t he McLaren Driver

Where would we be
without a bit of gossip?
It s fun, int eresting and
it sells newspapers and
magazines.
In f act, at tim es, itseems that half of the
British media would
disappear overnight
without celebrity*
gossip. I t all looks
harmless enough, but
scientists have
discovered some
interesting things aboutjust how powerful
gossip can be.
Theres no smoke without a fireThis old Engl ish saying f it s perfect ly t he lat est scientif ic discoveries
about gossip. Even though people may not completely believe thegossip they hear about someone, at the very least, they think, there
must be some t ruth in it the f ire which creates the smoke of gossip!
Researchers from the Max Planck Insti tute in Germany t ested students
using a computer game. They found t hat gossip w as very import ant
when people were making decisions about things. The researchers
gave student s some money which they then gave to other players in
turn, writing comments about each other as they played. The study
show ed t hat students gave less money t o people described in these
notes as mean* and more t o t hose described as generous. This even
happened when they were show n false* gossip invented by the
researchers and against the evidence they saw w ith t heir ow neyes! People only saw the gossip and not the past decisions, t he
researchers concluded.
The effect of gossipPoli ti cians and celebrit ies have fallen int o di sgrace* , people have
been accused of serious crimes with l it t le evidence, and f riendships
have been destroyed, all because of gossip. It is a pow erfu l t hing.
However, there do seem to be some positive sides to gossip. Another
group of researchers in America have uncovered some good in bad
gossip. They say that sharing gossip between friends makes their
f riendship stronger and br ings people closer together. The gossipers
strengt hen* their fri endships by telling secret in formation to each
other, whether real or not , wit h t he person being gossiped about kept
on the outside of the group. This of course does not take into account
the eff ect of all thi s on t he person being t alked about .
