What you need:• tinder (dried material which catches alight from a spark, eg dried grass, wood shavings or tissue paper)

• kindling (small dry twigs or thin strips of wood)

• sticks and logs (they must be dry)

• a flint block and steel rod

How to light a fire using flint and tinder

This is the traditional way to light a fire, used before matches and lighters were invented. It’s not easy, but it’s a great challenge!

P Cubs love to camp. You’ll learn how to pitch a tent, make a fire, work together in a team and feed yourselves, as well as lots of other fun activities.

What to do1. Place a twig upright in

the ground and arrange some tinder at its base.

2. Make a loose ‘tepee’ of kindling around the first twig, leaving a gap to the centre.

3. Place a small bundle of tinder next to the gap in the twigs.

4. Strike the steel rod against the flint so that sparks fall onto the tinder.

5. When it starts to glow, blow on it gently until you see flame, then place it in the centre of the fire.

6. Add small pieces of kindling through the gaps to keep the flames alight. Blow gently if the flames go out.

7. Add larger sticks and then logs as the fire begins to burn strongly. 3

Ellen MacArthur’s incredible journeyEllen MacArthur was four years old when she first went sailing in her aunt’s boat.She saved money and bought her own small dinghy when she was eight. Ellen became a brilliant sailor. In 2004, when she was 28 she set off to sail around the world alone in a big boat called a Trimaran.During the voyage she came across huge waves in the Southern Ocean.She sailed around Africa, below Australia and around South America, a total of over 50,000km. In one storm her main sail was damaged and she had to climb the 30m mast to fix it.The boat passed icebergs and sailed through gales. On day 63 Ellen nearly collided with a whale!Ellen was exhausted. Sailing the boat was really hard and she only

had 10 minutes sleep at a time. After 71 days at sea she arrived in France – she had broken the world record for the fastest ever solo round-the-world voyage!Ellen MacArthur was made a Dame by the Queen and became a national hero.

ATE Skating is loads of fun, so

why not take up rollerblading, skateboarding or ice skating?

Three cool skateboarding tricks

Foot pick up:• this is an easy and cool way to pick up your skateboard

• with the board on the ground in front of you, kick down on the tail so the board flips up

• catch the board on your foot

• lift it up to your hand using your foot

Manual:• this is like a wheelie on a skateboard It’s sometimes called a manny

• ride along level ground at a slow or medium pace

• move your weight onto your back foot so that the front of the board rises a little

• try to hold your balance with the front wheels off the ground

• don’t let the tail of the board drag on the ground8


Boneless:• this is a simple jump trick which involves grabbing the board• ride along with your back foot well back

• bend down and with one hand grab the board just behind the front wheels

• slide your front foot onto the ground, popping up the board and lifting it at the same time

• jump, holding the board and making it level in mid-air

• put your front foot back on the board as it drops, and let go with your hand

• land with knees bent and arms out to balance, rolling along

The hair from horses’ tails is used to make violin bow strings.

S Cooking out in the open over a fire is loads of fun. As a Cub you’ll learn the best ways to do it.

How to make a cardboard oven

What you need:• a strong, thick cardboard box

• masking tape• a roll of wide cooking foil• wire cake cooler (or similar)• four metal tent pegs• a sharp knife (adult help may be needed with this)

What to do:1. Carefully cut away the

top and bottom of the box, using a sharp knife. Keep the pieces. Get an adult to help you with this.

2. Cover all of the inside and outside of the box with foil, using masking tape on the outside to hold it in place. There must be no gaps or tape joins on the inside.

3. Make a lid for the box using the pieces cut away before. Cover this with foil too.

4. Make a shelf by pushing the four metal pegs through the corners of the box. Rest the wire cake cooler on these supports so that the shelf is about 15cm above the ground.

5. Dig a shallow pit the same width and length as the box, and light a good fire in it. Charcoal gives the best results.

6. When you have glowing embers, place the box oven over the coals with your food on the shelf inside it. Put the lid on top, holding it in place with stones.

7. Try cooking pizza, shepherd’s pie or maybe an apple crumble in your cardboard oven. Remember to keep checking the food!

Check with an adult before making fires. Watch it carefully and make sure you’ve got a way of putting the fire out.

outdoors and how to make things using what is around them. Here’s a guide to building a shelter.

How to build a den out of sticks

This den or bivouac shelter is very useful if you are caught outside without a tent, or you need a temporary shelter.

The opening of your shelter

should face away

from the wind.

2. Trim any twigs or leaves from a strong, straight stick and use this as your other main upright pole.

3. Sharpened the stick at the bottom and hammer it into the ground using a heavy rock.

4. Use a strong ridge pole to join the two upright poles. Lash it into place with string.

5. Make sure the opening of your shelter faces away from the wind.

6. Make the roof frame by lashing a series of sticks from the ridge pole angled down to the ground.

7. Either fix a tarpaulin or plastic sheet over the frame, or build a roof by weaving thin sticks across the frame pieces.

8. You could cover the roof frame with leafy branches pushed in and out of the sticks to keep them in place.

Keep safe Make sure you ask an adult before you use a knife or saw.

IT Cubs get the opportunity to

build all sorts of interesting things: from kites and sling-shots to obstacle courses. Here’s one to try at home:

How to make a hot air balloon

Hot air balloons rise because the warm air inside them is less dense, and so lighter, than the air outside. This design for a very simple model balloon can work indoors or out.

What you need:• a plastic bin liner• scissors• parcel tape

(wide, light sticky tape)• a hairdryer

What to do1. Carefully cut off the

bottom of the bin liner with the scissors so that you have a flat edge.

2. Open out the bin liner fully so there are no inner folds.

3. Tape closed the bottom of the bin liner, right along the edge you have cut.

4. Tape the other end of the bin liner, but this needs to be in the opposite direction to make a pyramid shape (called a tetrahedron).

5. Cut off one corner of the bin liner about 10cm from the end – this makes a hole for the hairdryer.

6. Open the hole and use the hairdryer to blow hot air into the balloon. Now watch it rise into the air.

Tips for success:• the two ends must be

taped carefully so no air can escape.

• do not use thick ‘gaffer’ tape, as this is too heavy.

• if possible, the hair dryer should be set to a low fan setting but medium heat.

• only test the balloon outside if there is no wind.

• do not allow the balloon to fly away and cause litter! One way to avoid this is to attach a long, thin cotton line to the bottom (knot the end and use tape to fix it). Tie the other end to a heavy object.

1In 2014 a climber was in the valley of Dovedale in Derbyshire when a storm cloud came over and it started to rain hard.

S Fancy trying exciting outdoor activities like caving and climbing? You never knowwhat you might find when you are out and about. Here’s a marvellous true story to prove it!

2He saw a cave nearby and went inside to shelter.

3The climber used his torch to explore the cave. After a while he noticed a dark object among the gravel on the floor of the cave.

4He took a closer look and discovered that it was a very old coin. Carefully, he searched through the gravel to see if there were more.20

5After a short while he found another coin, and then two more, silver in colour and richly decorated with patterns.

6The man took the four coins to the local museum. It was discovered that they were from the Iron Age, over 2000 years ago.

7A team of expert archaeologists was called in to search for more finds in the cave. Amazingly, they found 26 coins including gold ones: buried treasure!

8The coins were cleaned and identified. Some of them were Roman. They had all been buried by a rich tribal leader and hidden for over two thousand years. What a find!
