Dear Parents/Carers
Last year I altered the school policy to allow children to wear earrings
in school. This was done on the understanding that the initial piercing
would be done at the start of the summer holiday so that it would not
impact on the children during term time. Recently we have had a
number of children who have had ears pierced and this is causing
problems due to the fact that they cannot take part in PE lessons for six
weeks. Going forward please could you respect the school policy
(which is available on the school website) and ensure that ears are
pierced only at the start of the summer holiday. 19th January 2018
NSPCC
Parents' Pack for PANTS message
The TV advert directs parents to the PANTS campaign, used in schools for many years. There is now a pack for parents to use, to encourage them to have a conversation that many might feel uncomfortable about having. Information is also available in Welsh and for children with a hearing impairment. The link to the parents’ PANTS pack is here: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/underwear-rule
Pantosaurus App for iOS and Android
The NSPCC have also teamed up with award-winning animators, Aardman to create a free app, for both android and iOS, featuring the Panatsorus characters. There are four mini games where players test their skills against Pantosaurus. The app is great fun to use, although I’m rubbish at mobile games and struggled with the basketball game! Get the app by going to the relevant App Store below: Find on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.org.nspcc.pantosaurus Find on the Apple App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/playtime-with-pantosaurus/id1258635349?mt=8
Sarahah
A fairly new social media app called Sarahah (“Honesty” in Arabic) is becoming popular amongst our students. It enables users to link the app to their Snapchat account (or post a link on other social media sites) and send anonymous messages to others. It can also gather comments from other users, take screenshots of the comments, and share them on Snapchat. It also allows users to send anonymous and totally unmoderated comments to other people, whether they know them or not. This can clearly be a vehicle for bullying and poor online behaviour. Apparently the app will also download the users’ full contact list and sell it on to third parties, which is also highly dubious. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/app-reviews/sarahah#
In short, this is another app that encourages students to share unkind comments and bully each other anonymously, and is best avoided. Common Sense Media also have this helpful parental guide to putting restrictions in place on children’s iPhones

News from the classroom:
Packtypes in Reception
Last week Reception families came into class to learn about Packtypes. First, Miss Taylor gave an introduction to Packtypes and how it is used at Cuddington Croft to help the children understand their own learning behaviours and value the differences between us all. Then, parents and children worked together to pick statements that might best describe them and discover the Packtype that best describes them at the current time. Thank you to all the families who were able to come into school, and to Miss Taylor for sharing her expertise!
Year 6 Shared Writing
In English, Year 6 have been exploring the chambers of Pharaoh Semerkhet's tomb. Each lesson, they are writing about the mysterious contents of each eerie chamber while on a quest to reach Semerkhet, but along the way, they are cursed. During our unit, the children worked collaboratively with their writing buddy to create a piece of shared writing, taking it in turns to write sentences after very in-depth discussion. They were bursting with ideas, helping each other and up-levelling their vocabulary choices as a team. Excellent work, Year 6!
Y2– The North Wind and The Sun In Year 2 this week, we have started to explore the fable 'The North Wind and The Sun.' We listened to the story and identified that the key message in the story which was to treat others with kindness and warmth. We then used the 8 main points of the story to retell it and learn the story off by heart. We considered our body language, facial expressions and used our voices to explore how the characters were feeling throughout the story. We thoroughly enjoyed acting out the story ahead of adapting this fable to write our very own!
Y3-The Snow Queen
Year 3 have been getting stuck into their new book: The Snow Queen. We started the week by using a range of clues to make informed guesses about the text. This included pictures of a fantastical ice palace, a wicked Snow Queen, an enchanted shard of ice and an ominous ice-block prison! We discussed and predicted what the clues all meant - then we enjoyed reading the book to find out! Once we had got to know the characters, we acted out the pivotal moments from the text, making sure to change our voices to match the context of the scene.
Y1-Science Day
Year 1 were very excited for their Science day, where they turned into builders. Mrs White and Mr Walter came into school and explained to Year 1 their important job roles in the building industry. This was very interesting and the children were able to ask a variety of questions about the different materials they use for buildings. Then, we learnt all about waterproof materials and the inventor Charles Macintosh. We were able to conduct an experiment investigating the best waterproof material to use for our raincoats. In the afternoon, we tested a variety of different material to decide the best material to use for a roof. Well done Year 1 for all your hard work!
