The goals were established to ensure that, by the year 2025, 80% of Shelby County Schools students are college and career ready, 90% of students graduate from high school and 100% of students who graduate will enroll in a post-secondary learning opportunity.

Common Core State Standards• The CCSS focus on students in K-12 developing the skills

and knowledge needed to be college and career ready.• Key Points in ELA/Literacy: Reading - Progressive development of reading

comprehension, including diverse literature Writing - Ability to write logical arguments and perform

research Speaking & Listening – Gain, evaluate and present

increasingly complex information, ideas and evidence through listening & speaking, and media

Student Efficacy Training and Destination 2025

Efficacy for Students links scholars to academic success through writing,

speaking/listening, reading and critical thinking.

It improves scholars writing skills as well as gives them access to personalized learning

and enhances their engagement in learning.

Do Now

• Think about your Student Population

• What motivates them?• How do you ensure that they

are receiving a holistic education?

– Efficacy for Students?– 1. Three Concepts of Efficacy?– 2. Student Efficacy Documents– 3. Effective Praise

– Career/College Readiness Activities– 1. Ideas to complete your program

What We Will Discuss

What do we Know about Efficacy?

Efficacy is …

The ability to produce a desired result Effectiveness Efficiency Completing a task with purpose

Efficacy for Students

3 Efficacy Concepts

The “Get Smart” Method The Data Feedback Strategy Method Strong Side vs. Weak Side

The strategies for success include you as a student and individual working harder and more effectively, and using a self-directed approach to learning (you must become motivated to learn and put effort into it).

Philosophy

Concept 1:The “Get Smart” Method

• You have the brainpower to learn anything you choose

• Feel capable of achieving any task or goal

• Be empowered to work hard to get smart, even when things seem difficult

• Never give up when something seems too hard

• Smart is something you gain not what you are born with

Why Teach the “Get Smart” Method?

Students, because of their past failures/difficulties, may not believe that their effort will get them to proficiency, and/or that the adults in their lives believe in them and will do whatever it takes to help them become proficient.

Student Activity:Think Pair Share Time

• Think-What is something really hard that you learned how to do? It

could be something at school, home, a game or a sport. (Student Engagement)

-What did you do to learn how to do it?• Pair-Turn to your neighbor and record their answers to the above

questions. (Social/Writing Skills/ Speaking/Listening)• Share- If called upon please be prepared to share your partner’s

answer. (Active Participation, Speaking/Listening)

Concept 2: The Data Feedback Strategy Method

Identify the Data-Tests, Report Cards, EXLORE Results, Behavior Logs, Assessments

Analyze the Data (Review Data and Feedback)-It points out what you don’t know or what you have difficulty with doing

Develop a Plan of Action/Strategy (Goal Setting)-What can you do to improve your grades?-Study Habits/Time Management Skills/Test-Taking Skills

Why Teach The Data Feedback Strategy Method?

Allowing students to review their own data helps them to know:

-Where they are-Where they are going-What they need to do to get there (goal setting)

Individual Report

M. Healey 2015

• Analyze the Data• What are your

strongest areas?• Look for areas that

need improvement• What SPIs do you

need to work on• Look at your % correct• Track, Chart, and

Graph your results

Concept 3: Strong Side vs. Weak Side

Students will:• Be more aware that their character matters—how

they treat other people, and how they work at things that are challenging

• Develop a deeper conscience for doing what’s right• Gain language to control their own behavior, as well

as be a positive influence on their peers• Know the 2 sides of their personalities: the strong-

never gives ups, helps others, is positive vs weak-feels defeated, mean to others, is negative, hurts self/others

Why Teach Strong Side vs. Weak Side?

Students sometimes turn away and give up on difficult school work, or something else that is challenging.

Sometimes students are mean to others, and are not helpful.

Helps students to understand why they act in these ways.

Goal Sheet

Purpose of OrientationTo teach you that:

Smart is something you gain not what you are born with

Working harder and more effectively, with a self-directed approach will bring “BIG” Results

You can overcome past difficulties in subjects that were hard for you.

Model Lesson

What is Efficacy?

•The ability to produce a desired result• Effectiveness• Efficiency• Completing a task with purpose

Two Questions

You will be able to answer these questions when we finish today:

•What is the secret to being successful in life?

•Why do some students learn more than others in school?

Activity• Think-What is something really hard that you learned how to

do? It could be something at school, home, a game or a sport.

-What did you do to learn how to do it?• Pair-Turn to your neighbor and record their answers to the

above questions. Share- If called upon please be prepared to share your

partner’s answer.

Student EfficacyElementary & Secondary Editions

The strategies for success include you as a student and individual working harder and more effectively, and using a self-directed approach to learning (you must become motivated to learn and put effort into it).

We will learn/discuss three efficacy concepts over the course of the year:

1. The “Get Smart” Method

2. The Data Feedback Strategy Method

3. Strong Side vs. Weak Side

ReflectionModel Lesson

• What resonated with you?

• What is similar to your current practice?

• What is different than your current practice?

• What are you going to change as a result?

Application

• What was easiest for you?

• What was most difficult?

• What else do you need to learn/do prior to applying to your classroom?

Effective Praise• Leave them with the

possibility and opportunity to change: allow them to be different and creative; don’t lock them into one way of being

• Deter dependence: help them to see that they can make it on their own; encourage self-belief and the ability to make decisions

• Phrases: You are the best! I really enjoyed the way you….. I hope to see you continue….

• Everyone loves PRAISE

• Children Especially love PRAISE

-Makes them feel important, loved, and cherished

• Children need PRAISE

-Source of guidance, support, and direction in life

• They need to know when they are doing well instead of always hearing how they disappoint or fall short of expectations

Ensure that Students set Realistic Goals

StartPlanMeasureTimeDo

1.What do you want to do?2. How will you do it?3. Where are you now?4. When do you want to accomplish this goal?5. Begin making changes to meet your goal.

NEVER GIVE UP!!!Keep trying until you get it RIGHT!!!

Prepare Students to Rise to the Challenge!

When schoolwork, sports, video games or anything they are working on gets challenging, teach them that,

Can I do it?

HOW can I do it?

The question is:

The question is NOT:

College/Career Ready Activities• EXPLORE Testing/Results• 4 year plans

-8th grade Promotion Requirements/HS Graduation Requirements• High School Visits

-have students visit high school open houses or take a group to visit the schools• High School Expo• High School Course Registration• Teach : Study /Test-Taking/Time Management Skills• DEAR: Drop Everything and Read• Brain Breaks-relaxation time/reflection with music or writing

assignments

College/Career Ready Activities• Career Day: Have College/Universities visit as speakers• Honors Day Programs-community speakers or college

recruiters• College Readiness

-ACT Prep (have 7th graders take ACT, enroll in ACT Prep Courses)

-College Tours• Community Service• Scholar Ambassador Program

Wrap-UP

In order for students to become successful they need: Motivation Engagement Effective Praise Empowerment

This can be done through Efficacy for Students and having a well balanced Comprehensive Counseling

Program.
