Cultural & Heritage Places is produced by Brisbanes Living Heritage Network with the generous support of The University of Queensland.

IntroductionBrisbanes Living Heritage Network aims to raise awareness of the heritage sector, both indigenous and European, within the Greater Brisbane area by connecting people, places and history. For a number of years the principal means used to achieve this aim has been our highly successful Experience Guide. This year it has been decided to rename the Guide to more precisely reflect its function. Cultural & Heritage Places presents member organisations by regions and incorporates additional maps to make navigating our heritage sites easier. A small section is dedicated to dining within significant heritage sites; while other sites which are not members, and which are infrequently open to the public, are included for your interest.

The Networks website at www.blhn.org, includes further information about member organisations, sample itineraries for exploring on your own, an Events Calendar, as well as details of the heritage tours conducted by the Network, either independently or in conjunction with Brisbane City Council programs.

We hope that Cultural & Heritage Places facilitates your enjoyment of the exciting heritage of the Greater Brisbane area.

. . . Centenary Park, midway between Fortitude Valley and the Brisbane CBD, was once a place to gather soapbox at the ready for weekend public meetings debating an array of issues. Today the Park is home to statues of two men with similar-sounding surnames and vastly different occupations . . . the Scottish Bard Robert Burns [175996] and Premier of Queensland, Thomas Joseph Byrnes [186098].

    HISTORIC PROFILE Central Station

The Central Railway Station opened in 1889 as a temporary structure and represents the northern end of a defining Line of Sight architectural design for the City which has, as its southern end, the Anglican Church of St. Mary The Virgin at kangaroo Point. A contract for a permanent building dates from 1899 and the design of the clock tower is attributed to onetime Colonial Architect J. J. Clark, who provided the inspiration for the Treasury Building at the top of Queen Street.

    HISTORIC PROFILE General Post Office

Brisbanes General Post Office [GPO] opened in 1872 to a design by F. D. G. Stanley at a cost of 7,450.00. John Petrie was the builder, using a combination of porphyry from kangaroo Point and sandstone. The original plans provided for a handsome clock tower however this work did not proceed.

The Telegraph Office, another commission for John Petrie, was completed in 1879.

next door to St. Johns Anglican Cathedral, the St. Martins House of today was once a war memorial hospital, built to honour those who had served in the Great War [1914-1918]. With the foundation stone laid in 1919, St. Martins Hospital served the people of Queensland until 1971. And why you might askwas the Hospital named for St. Martin? The end of the Great War the Armistice took place at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the Feast Day of St. Martin of Tours.

. . . the Windmill on Wickham Terrace is the oldest windmill tower in Australia and the oldest example of European construction in Queensland. Dating from 1828, it later became an Observatory and Signal Station reporting on shipping arrivals and, for many years, helped keep the time for the citizens of Brisbane with the firing of a cannon and the dropping of its time ball at 1.00pm.

    HISTORIC PROFILE Treasury Casino

Situated at the river end of the Queen Street Mall, the Queensland Government Treasury Building was built in three stages from 1886 and 1928. John James Clarkes neo-Italianate design was used for the new four story plan which was changed from the original two story plan proposed by Melbourne architects Grainger and DEbro. Looking closely at the building, the three stages of development can be seen by the colour changes of the sandstone ashlar casing of the building.

. . . that Devils have run amuck in George Street; seven in fact who normally look down from the 1910 section of the old Government Printing Office. It has been suggested perhaps unkindly that four of the seven are representations of the politicians of the day. And why devils? Whatever the reason, it has certainly caused alarm to the two cats further up the street. These frightened felines can be easily seen, clinging for dear life to the parapets of the nearby Mansions building.

    DID yOU kNOW . . .

. . . that Queen Victoria personally chose the name Queensland in 1859. Her statue, is one of the many scattered throughout her then Empire and dates from 1906. It was inspired by the original found in Portsmouth, England. And whilst on the subject of royalty, many of the streets of Brisbanes CBD are named for kings, queens, princes and princesses the ladies travel east to west; the men north to south!

    DID yOU kNOW . . .

. . . that Brisbane has a link to Londons famous Big Ben through a building adjacent to the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Elizabeth Street. Celebrating its first Mass in May 1850 and later becoming the first Roman Catholic Cathedral in Brisbane, this structure is attributed to a design by A.W.N. Pugin [1812 1852] whose many commissions included the tower in which Big Ben is housed.

. . . in colonial times, Queensland operated its own navy with ship names like Gayundah, Paluma, Midge and Mosquito. The Naval Stores survive to this day at the base of the cliffs at Kangaroo Point and the Queen Anne style Naval Offices at the Botanic Gardens end of Edward Street date from 1900. A onetime Commandant of the Queensland Marine Defence Force, William Rooke Cresswell, came to be known as The Father of the Royal Australian Navy.

. . . on a hot summers day there is nothing more refreshing than to bite into a portion of chilled mango or pawpaw; that is unless you are in Elizabeth Street in Brisbanes CBD. Here on the wall of the GPO building, across from the Cathedral of St. Stephen and high above the traffic, are two depictions of mango and pawpaw trees . . . sculptured in stone! These are examples of the work of celebrated Brisbane artisan Lewis Jarvis Harvey and are recorded as dating from 1910.

    HISTORIC PROFILE NAB Bank

The former head office of the Qld National Bank dates from the 1880s Brisbanes Belle Epoch! So grand was its banking chamber that the building was often referred to as Drurys Temple in deference to the Banks General Manager Lt.-Colonel E.R. Drury. Built in the Classical Revival style, work commenced in 1881 with Qld sandstone used in the construction of the building and New Zealand limestone featured in the imposing Corinthian columns.

    DID yOU kNOW . . .

. . . although Brisbanes Customs House was completed in 1889 and the federation of the Australian colonies dated from 1901, this iconic building boasts a Coat of Arms within its pediments that intrigues, as none of the Australian colonies had been accorded a Coat of Arms by the time of its construction. The Coat of Arms looks remarkably like the present day Australian Coat of Arms, complete with the exhortation to Advance Australia. Perhaps the ornamentation to the Customs House pediment is linked to a medal struck in 1853, acknowledging the end of the transportation of convicts to Tasmania?

    HISTORIC PROFILE The Barracks

The Barracks development sits atop the site of the first Brisbane gaol of 1860. The imposing gaol contained 96 cells, each housed two prisoners and measured only 2.5m2. Three police buildings of note remain the Barracks/Depot building (1938); the Stable (1911), converted to a Garage in 1937, and the Police Radio building (19111972), now the Hogs Breath Caf.

    DID yOU kNOW . . .

The Networks logo draws its inspiration from a number of things . . . The two graphic arrow devices convey the idea that heritage is about the past as well as the future. The right arrow is formed by stylised poinsettia leaves, Brisbanes floral emblem. The dots making up the left arrow represent the organisations that belong to the network. Together the form of the arrows suggests a flower, the living dimension of the identity. The traditional heritage colours in this context represent the duality of sandstone (history and permanence), and red (poinsettia and life).

    DID yOU kNOW . . .

. . . the recently-restored lighthouse on Cleveland Point dates from 1864 and was the first lighthouse built in Queensland under the direction of the colonys first Portmaster and marine surveyor, Capt. G.P. Heath. Even earlier, when this area was known as Emu Point, it had been proposed that this region could be developed as a major commercial port. Timber-framed and hexagonal in shape, the original fixed kerosene light was designed to be visible for a radius of 14.5 kilometres. Powered by electricity from 1934, the lighthouse was moved to its current location in 1975.
