As part of the study, students explored their heritage by interviewing their parents about the history and traditions of their families. Teachers brought out family albums and shared their own "roots" with the students. The focus was on similarities and differences among people and how, in spite of differences, we all share the same needs: food, shelter, security, and love. We learned simple songs in five different languages: English, Spanish, German, French, and Danish.
Older students explored the themes "The Earth Is Our Home" and "We Belong to One Human Family" and studied the world's resources as well as the misuses of our ecosystem. Parents were asked to contribute by bringing up some of these issues at home and us- ing the newspaper as a resource.
In addition, guest speakers and parents from a variety of ethnic backgrounds came to share the customs, legends, and ideas that were still part of their life in the United States. Finally, a United Nations Day was held to which foreign students from a nearby university were invited. At a special lunch the college students told about their home countries.
This cross-cultural experience will be remembered by all who participated.

Picture and word cards can be used to name the items and parts, to match them, or to play various games. Words which describe the items can be added and, eventually, sentences can be made using the words the students have learned. Other picture topics include:
