Dear Alliance Française Friend,

On the eve of this holiday season, we offer you a program of beautiful music, movies, pictures and history; a history of painting, a history of resistance and of culture. It marks an end of a year that is has certainly been eclectic.

We have the honour of hosting an international event: a Concert of Maryse Ngalula (DRC) and Elie Kamano (Guinea). It is an event not to be missed, part of an African tour which has seen these artists traveling from Senegal to Madagascar and now has reached Tanzania. Join us on November 17 for this musical experience!

Kilwa, in Tanzania, is a World Heritage Site. The ruins of Kilwa are famous and now visited by tourists from all over the world. To create a link between the people of Kilwa and these visitors, a partnership has been created between the French city of Rochefort and the township of Kilwa. Two delegates from each city are to meet towards this end, first in Kilwa then later in Rochefort. The exhibition Alliance will organize in November tells the story of this partnership.

We will also highlight the beginning of our international photography contest with the theme “Jobs Around the World ‘. Welcome also to the talented Gadi Ramadhani, an artist of increasing significance in the cultural scene in Tanzania.

We are excited to announce our first Hip Hop Festival, in collaboration with our friends and partners at the Swiss Embassy. The program will include a DJ workshop, a Break dancing workshop, an MC workshop, a Graffiti workshop, followed by a concert.

Finally, we invite fans of cinema to enjoy the French film Itineraires as well as the documentary Cultures of Resistance. This film take us from BURMA, where monks take on a dictatorship, to BRAZIL, where musicians transform guns into guitars. Our series entitled Cultures of Resistance celebrates the people standing up to exploitation and violence armed only with artistic expression and creative activism.

We enjoy giving you all a rich and varied program to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you all next year in 2013 where we will continue to surprise you !

Tunatarajia mtafurahi kusoma kurasa hizi na tuna matumaini ya kuwaona Alliance Francaise hivi karibuni.

Born 1986; Kigoma, Tanzania and received NQF level 4 in Design Foundation and Printmaking from Artist Proof Studio, South Africa. I believe my prints are an unfinished catalog of fragments: objects, drawings, paintings, photographs, installation and other inventions. They are improvisational sites in which the constructed and the ready-made are used to question the making of the world through language and knowledge. My arrangements are arbitrary, inviting the viewer to move into a space of speculation. I rely on rollers, etching inks, needles and Fabriano or handmade paper or any media that fit into my thought or ideas that will allow to make my creativity flow.

My work thus far has used monoprint, calligraphy and etching to point to stereotypes of difference, which are hidden in plain sight. The objects I make are placed in the canon of modernist art, in hopes of making visible what is overlooked in the historicizing of the artist. This project has always been grounded in pleasure and aesthetics. My aim as an artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, is moved back into that time and the artwork itself moves again since it is life.

“Itineraires” is a desperate movie. Definitely the movie you MUST avoid if you’re depressed; it leaves no hope to the viewer. That scene when the hero cries over his grandma’s grave (the man in the cemetery tells his parents never visit this grave) after the cop discovered old photographs and other souvenirs of a long gone childhood where the young man had perhaps moment of happiness is one of the most moving of the French cinema of the last ten years.

“Itineraires” tells the story of a young man who was jailed for something he had never done; when he is released, he is accused of another murder. The detective side of the story is almost completely passed over in silence. This is a psychological drama (or should I say tragedy) ,not a thriller.

Both are winners of “Visas for Creation 2011”. Maryse Ngalula and Elie Kamano are from Regions and different musical areas, Central Africa for Maryse Ngalula and West Africa for Elie Kamano.

These talented artists were initially distinguished by their personal struggles, the protection of African woman, the denunciation of the evils that plague Africa and hinder its development. Maryse Naglula has built a strong musical identity with her original music based on the Mutuashi Kasai (traditional rhythms of central DRC) that has enriched blues, jazz and other sounds such as African Zulu music .

Elie Kamano is definitely a rising star of the new generation Afro-reggae.

Fun and Educational Dramatic Play

By Kisauni Sanaa Group

Alliance Show Grounds7.00pm - 10.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Wednesday 12th December 2012

Kisauni Sanaa Group is a group that consists of eight local artists, all of Tanzanian origin. They have been directing and acting out local themes in plays and dramas that depict life as a Tanzanian.

The group addresses social, cultural issues on stage through drama and plays, making the education lively and yet fun and entertaining.

Sometimes mimed, their plays are mute yet accompanied by light background music that sets the air of the play. Learning while watching a play and grasping the main idea and theme is a speciality of this little group that has been achieving wonders around the Tanzanian scene.

This one is one of the more obscure group / music. One cannot find virtually any reference at all to the group on the nets. Kind of half way between the traditional dancey band stuff and the gospel choir stuff, this one seems to be more of maybe a traditional local group. But some of the tunes are still really catchy with complex instrumentation.

Laura and David, the former super model and businesswoman became the star of the Celtics basketball team: a couple blessed of gods.

It is in full honeymoon when tragedy strikes: David leaves for a swim and disappears. Without a farewell. Laura will then discover buried secrets.. “Everything is already there and we understand why Harlan Coben has become the king of the thriller.”

What is the relationship between a woman who poisons her successive husbands and lover president of the republic? What is the link between a simple sailor and an international crook who sells religious trinkets machined in China? By what miracle image of St. Rita, patron saint of hopeless causes, she becomes the mysterious guide of their lives? Four interconnected stories. Four stories through the ordinary and the extraordinary of all life. Four stories that dig this question: are we free or we suffer a fate? Can we change? Concerto to the Memory of an Angel is followed by the Journal kept by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt in writing.

“This is not quite an essay, not quite an attempt to understand some of the mysteries, or to forge a few myths. This is a story written in several books on Italian scholar, at the same time, according to another mode, and on machine paper 21 x 27, were written phrases and other stories.
