The scholarships are administered through the Culver City Community Scholarship Fund, a nonprofit volunteer organization. Awards will be presented on Monday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the Robert Frost Auditorium. Donors include a wide variety of service clubs, businesses, parent organizations such as PTA, and employee organizations from the school district and the city, as well as individual and memorial scholarships. Donors are able to set their criteria, which may include academic status, financial need, career goals, or Culver City schools attended. There are two ways to donate to the fund. Young Storytellers Connect With NPR What do you get when you bring together Young Storytellers alumni, entertainment industry professionals, and thought leaders to discuss representation in the media at National Public Radio West? A truly inspiring NPR Generation Listen event, that’s what! A movement to connect NPR with younger audiences who share the same curiosity about the world and a passion for creating a more informed populace, Generation Listen shares the Young Storytellers belief in the transformative power of stories. Culver City High School didn’t quite know what to expect when it decided to gather its community this week for a Listening Party, where the CCHS group would listen to a few NPR stories about a focused topic (diversity and representation in the media) and then have a discussion about the themes covered. CCHS was lucky enough to be joined by the two NPR reporters whose pieces the group listened to, Mandalit Del Barco and Shereen Marisol Meraji. The wide-ranging discussion hit on crucial questions facing CCHS’s Young Storytellers as they navigate the world today: Who gets to tell someone else’s story? Why are stories important when it comes to issues of diversity? What is the value of stories not everyone can understand or relate to? From folklore around Dia De Los Muertos to the gems of Steven Universe, no form of media representation was left unexplored. CCHS is grateful to Generation Listen and NPR West for giving our young people and their families the opportunity to be heard on these issues and to hear from storytellers working in the media. Two Friday Nights, Two Spring Concerts by AVPA Music Culminating a prolific year of performing and musical growth, Culver City High School’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts will present two spring concerts showcasing its student musicians in a variety of ensembles. The two concerts will represent the final performances in the Robert Frost Auditorium before the historic venue closes this summer for an extensive renovation. Both Friday evening concerts start at 7 p.m. The first, on May 20, will feature the Orchestra, sev-eral Chamber Music ensembles, Chamber Singers, and the Jazz Combo. Co-directed by Dr. Tony Spano and Lauren Hayes, the Chamber Singers will perform repertoire from the L.A. Master Chorale High School Choir Festival at Walt Disney Concert Hall last month. The Orchestra, directed by Dr. Tania Fleischer, will perform Granada by Agustin Lara, featuring senior soloist Oliver Berliner. Cellist and senior William Ellzey will also be featured on Punchi-nello by Victor Herbert. Other Orchestra highlights include St. Paul Suite by Gustav Holst and a suite from the movie Airplane. Among the chamber music ensembles will be a brass quintet, flute sonata, violin sonata, and wind trio. The second concert, on May 27, will feature the CCHS Concert Band, AVPA Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Sax Ensemble. The Concert Band, which earned “excellent” ratings at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association’s 2016 Band Festival in March, will perform several of its festival hits, including Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F and Frank Tich-eli’s Cajun Folk Songs. The Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo are also performing on the heels of a successful competition. At the Fullerton College Jazz Festival in April, the Jazz Ensemble re-ceived “excellent” ratings while the Jazz Combo, directed by Dr. David Brennan, earned high scores and “superior” ratings. Admission is free; donations are welcome and benefit the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. The Robert Frost Auditorium is located at Culver City High School, 4401 Elenda St., Culver City, CA 90230. “Access from AT&T” is an Affordable Wireline Home Internet Option For Low-Income Households AT&T 1 is making wireline home Internet service more affordable for low-income households starting today through Access from AT&T, a new program designed to help bridge the digital divide.
