Reflections from Dieter – Year 7!
How do you feel you have settled into Cumberland High School? “Great! The Teachers and staff have helped the
Year 7 as a whole settle into the High School environment”. What is the best thing about Cumberland? “The
Community. The Cumberland High School community is a friendly place where everyone is an equal”. Has it been easy
to make friends? “Yes! There are lots of people who are new to high school and that means when you talk to others who
you don’t know they too are in the same situation and consequently you become friends”. What is your favourite
subject? “Science. There are plenty of subjects to like here but science is my favourite. It’s cool to find out how things
really happen and how they’re done in science”. Other Comments: “At Cumberland you can be confident being the best
version of yourself. We shouldn’t always blend in when we are all here to stand out from the crowd like we are painted
red!”

Principal’s Voice
Welcome back to one and all as
we begin another dynamic
journey at Cumberland High
School. The first four weeks at
Cumberland High have enabled
us to connect and set very
specific learning goals for all of
our students and nurture new
partnerships with our parents
and the community to ensure
that our school community
continues to thrive.
2017 High Achievers
We celebrated our outstanding
HSC results and recognised
exceptional student performance
at our High Achievers’ Assembly.
Our 2017 results marked
remarkable success with the
attainment of 50 band 6 and 125
band 5 results. Our Dux Jingyuan
Yin scored an ATAR of 99.65 and
Prox. Acc. Nikola Najdovski an
ATAR of 98.85, were both also
recognised by the Minister as All
Rounders. Our post school
destination data reflects our
fantastic school results. I have
also included the Year 7 Writing
NAPLAN data which
demonstrates the impact of our
concentrated efforts to build the
academic literacy of our learners.
The green line showcases our
school data which is well above
State data and is demonstrating
upward trends. Fantastic results!

Assessment and Reporting
Mr Condell, who is leading Assessment and Reporting, hosted information evenings for Year 7 and Year 10 with
excellent parent and student attendance, to unpack the expectations and requirements regarding our assessment
processes. We have already issued assessment schedules and booklets to all students and would encourage
parents to look at these documents and lock in the dates so that we continue to support our students effectively in
2018! These documents are also available on our school website.

2018 Open Evening
Our Open Evening, with the
exceptional leadership of Ms
Rigg and Ms Edwards, was a
tremendous success with 400
visitors entering our school
grounds and experiencing the
Cumberland magic.
We had more than 100
student volunteers on the
night demonstrating that
extraordinary Cumberland
spirit and sharing with our
Year 7 parents and
prospective parents all the
opportunities available to
students at Cumberland High
School.
We launched The
Cumberland Journey
Program which has been
crafted by Mr Pillay and Ms
Sisala to map a very exciting
journey of leadership and
extracurricular offerings for
each student, every year so
that there is a clear leadership
focus to maximise student
success. Special thanks to our
guest speakers Ms Butterfield,
Mr Bekiaris and Jason Diep
who really provided
wonderful insights into the
way we work together to
nurture our students at
Cumberland High School.
The feedback from our
community has been
extremely positive with
distinct references made to
our outstanding student
leaders and highly committed
staff. I feel so very privileged
to be part of this
extraordinary community!

Community
Mentoring 2018
Our Cumberland High School
Community Mentoring Program
for 2018 launched in February
and is now in its fourth year.
The program involves our
mentors meeting one-on-one
with students here at school from
8am – 9am once a month
throughout the school year. Our
mentors come from varied
backgrounds including policing,
defence, business, health,
entertainment/media, education,
sport and sports management.
They discuss many topics from
study, future career paths, coping
with stress, navigating
friendships, leadership
opportunities and the world of
work. Past students have found
this program to be extremely
worthwhile and it has helped
many students with many
aspects of their lives. Some
mentors are past Cumberland
students and some are parents of
Cumberland students which
makes for a very special
connection. We feel very
fortunate to have such a
wonderful and committed group
of Cumberland mentors. We are
always looking for new mentors
too! So, if you or someone you
know can give up one hour of
your time one morning per
month to help a year 11 student
navigate their senior years of
school, please get in touch with
either myself or Jude Edwards on
9871 7718.

2018 is already off to a fantastic
start, with all of our students
settling in well to their classes
and their daily routines. A big
welcome to our Year 7 students
who have had a positive
transition to high school and to
all new enrolments in our school.
We have many exciting
opportunities for our students
this year and are excited to share
their school journey with them.
This year we are very lucky to
have the following staff members
supporting our students within
the Learning Design Faculty:
Role Teacher
Head Teacher Alison Bovill
Learning Support
Melissa Cassel Andrew Fahey Karen Stonnill Leonie Browne
Literacy Support
Alison Bovill
Careers Angie Sisala
Librarian Karen Alexander
Continuing the journey to
improve the literacy skills of our
students, all Year 7 and Year 8
students will attend explicit
timetabled literacy sessions each
fortnight. These sessions will
focus on developing and
improving students’ writing skills
and empower students with the
capacity to understand and
respond to written tasks in
assessment tasks and
examinations. A specific focus on
minimum literacy standards for
students will also help to prepare
students for NAPLAN.
Students in Years 9 and 10 will be supported on their journey of
achieving the minimum literacy standard with explicit NAPLAN
preparation sessions and opportunities to prepare for the minimum
standards tests in Year 10. Further information on the minimum
standards testing opportunities will be provided to students and their
families when dates are announced.
The Learning Design and Wellbeing faculty are looking forward to an
exciting year ahead. We are excited to be working with the students to
support and extend their learning. Students are encouraged to visit the
Learning Design and Wellbeing faculty in E13 at any time support is
required.

Year 10 – Wet ‘n’ Wild
Last year, on a mainly clear
Friday morning, December 9th,
Year 10 embarked on an
adventure to Wet ‘n’ Wild. The
bus ride to the venue,
accompanied by teachers, was
lively and loud (we couldn’t hear
a word we were saying).
When we arrived at Wet ‘n’ Wild,
we watched visitors flooding in
until finally, we were issued our
gigantic wristbands and ushered
in.
Year 10 spent the day full of
laughs and smiles; enjoying the
sun, the water, and the thrilling
rides that the water park had to
offer. Some exciting ones
including the Bombora, the 360
Rush, and the Riptide.
Just before we left, it began to
rain. The bus ride back to school,
smelling heavily of chlorine and
sunscreen, was quiet as tired,
sun-drained students began to
doze off; lucky subjects in Miss
Nelson’s photos.
Overall, Year 10 had an amazing
day at Wet ’n’ Wild, thanks to the
help and contribution of the
amazing teachers Ms Nelson, Ms
Isachsen, Mr Afiouni and Mr
Smith.

Year 10 Work Experience
Work Experience week this year
will be in Week 3 Term 3, 6th –
10th August. Work experience is
one of the most valuable
activities that a student can do to
support their career
development. It gives them time
at a workplace to learn about an
occupation or industry. They may
observe others doing their job,
have a go themselves or do a
combination of both.
It is an opportunity to develop
skills and networks, learn about
the world of work and to decide
what kinds of things they would
like to do in the future.

Algebraic
Fractions Fun!
In the last week of school in
2017, 8 RED were given the task
of simplifying algebraic fractions
in a domino game format that
first involved factorising
quadratics.
In the lead up to completing this
activity, students had to learn
how to factorise a variety of
algebraic expressions. This was
quite challenging, but many
students rose to the occasion.
A brief spiel about factorising.
Most parents may remember the
concept from when they went to
school but few remember the
why or the how!
Factorising is important in all
strands of Mathematics starting
from Year 7 and continuing onto
University, especially students
considering Engineering and
many other career choices.
How do you factorise an
expression with two terms?
It involves finding the highest
common factor, writing it outside
the brackets and then
determining what is left. See the
example below.
The answer is 3(a + 2).
How do you factorise a
quadratic?
There are various ways. One way
is as follows.
Students find two numbers that
multiply to give – 21 (the
constant term) and the same two
numbers must add to give 4 (the
coefficient of x).
Here are some photos of 8 RED in
small groups helping one another
and being very creative in how
they organised their answers.

Reflections from
Gabriella.
Exchange student program in
Canada
It is a truly amazing
experience. It's turned into so
much more than I ever
expected. Not only have I been
inducted to the Canadian
culture, but I have also been
introduced to a multitude of
others.
There are sixty-four exchange
students in my school at the
moment. I am the only English
speaking one, which has made
it difficult to connect with
some students who find it
easier to group with people
from their own country. Even
so, I have made both
international and Canadian
friends here and have been
getting cultural lessons from
different countries.
I'd say I'm most informed on
Belgium, the place where my
first host sister was from.
Although she had left now for
home, she's become one of my
closest friends and I will
always refer to her as my
sister.
It's crazy to think that, by the
time I come home, I have
connected to over thirty
countries. But to be honest,
I'm still wrapping my head
around the fact that I'm in a
completely different
hemisphere, standing on a
completely different continent.
And yes, almost completely
different! It surprised my host
dad to find that Canada and
Australia do not share as
many similarities as presumed.
Although most of their food is
familiar, everything either
looks slightly changed or tastes
slightly changed.
The small town is a very
different scenario from Sydney
or even Carlingford. Only in
the last week did Bridgewater
install their first ever bus, the
only public transport system
they have. If your parents
can't drive you, your options
are either hire a taxi or walk.
Many things are different
here, as to be expected. I
always get caught up on street
lights. They are significantly
different and one of the first
things I noticed. Yellow
coloured, and flashing green
with very different pedestrian
crossing signs and noises. Of
course, many other things are
different. It’s easier to name
the similarities then the
differences, which I am so
relieved to know. What fun
would it be if it was all the
same?
Weather's setting in. I saw it
snowing for the first time on
Monday. It will take a while
before the snow can actually
build up but that hasn't
stopped the temperature from
dropping to minus degrees.
It's not so bad. It's only
horrible if you forget gloves, or
happen to not wear a proper
jacket - something I
continuously do that worries
my host mum.
My family here are terrific
people and very different from
my family at home. They've
allowed me to celebrate many
different occasions while being
here such as a wedding and
soon a baby shower. As with
all families, it's not always
smooth sailing but it's a joy to
be in the Sansford's care.
Issue 10 – 28 November, 2017
Reflections from Gabriella
Cont.
Settling into school has been a
ride. Everything about school if
different, even the way they
teach students the same
equations. In my opinion,
Canadian trigonometry is far
harder to work out then
Australian.
Teachers are much more
interested in exchanges then
the students are, which makes
it easier to talk to teachers
then my own peers. But it
wouldn't be as much of a
challenge if I was so naturally
gifted at making friends right
off the bat.
It's hard to pick out a
highlight of my exchange.
There's so many experiences
I've had that I would call the
highlight. My favourite
moments are the ones where I
feel immersed though, in both
culture and family…..
