Thank you to the 930 guests that attended the Cure For Life Foundation Cinderella Gala Ball 10 year celebration on Saturday 5 May 2012. This was our most successful Gala Ball to date, with over $1 million raised for brain cancer research. The Cinderella theme gave the evening a magical and theatric feel, with the Horden Pavilion transformed into a castle. The experience started with the Scots College Bagpipe Band playing as the guests arrived. Guests were then greeted by Cinderella stilt walkers inside a magical castle and dined on a sumptuous feast from Bayleaf Caterers. The theme continued throughout the evening with entertainment from Soule Mystique, Gregg Arthur and the Velvet Set, Leo Sayer and iconic Australian band Dragon. Our host Vince Sorrenti, while entertaining us with his wit throughout the evening, assisted our speakers Dr Charlie Teo, The Premier of NSW and Minister for Western Sydney, The Hon Barry O’Farrell MP and Prof Paul Kleihues to deliver our key messages: Stop the clock on brain cancer The theme based on a fairytale, bearing a moral message not to neglect nor overlook those less fortunate than ourselves Brain cancer is the orphaned cancer, the Cinderella disease, and it will take more than one Prince Charming to break the spell. It is our collective duty to act with service through the generosity of giving. The Foundation has seen a tremendous past quarter, which resulted in closing the financial year at just over $2.85 million, nearly $800,000 more than the previous year. Thank you to everyone across Australia who contributed to this result. I have been honoured to meet many of our generous supporters, including John Lance who set up an appeal in memory of his wife Sandra, Wayne and Ann Willmington from Music For Life, Francesco and Katarina Trunzo at their 50th wedding anniversary, the Iona Club 84 plus the team from The Century at The Star. There are many more of you who also organise fundraising in your local community and we thank you for your outstanding efforts. Finally, thank you for the generosity of those who helped us reach our tax appeal goal of $150,000, which featured the touching story of teenager Suzanna Calabro. From the funds raised, we will invest in tissue collection and patient records as one of our priority areas. This is a key focus to ensure that the tissue collected is of world class standard for use in brain cancer research projects. I would like to thank Professor Paul Kleihues who completed the first six-month posting at the Cure For Life Neur-Oncology Laboratory as part of our Visiting Academic Program. Professor Kleihues gave a significant contribution with strategic insights, processes and robust discussions and returned to the University Hospital in Zurich in August after a highly successful visit. We look forward to an ongoing association with him and his team in our shared purpose. During May we held a speaker panel series titled Robust at Martin Place, Sydney, as part of Brain Cancer Action Week. The panel discussions, facilitated by lawyers from leading law firms including Board members Peter Butler and Trevor Danos, tested their mettle with rigorous minds on robust topics. The Robust series was filmed and posted on News Limited’s thepunch.com.au and featured a daily brain cancer blog written by a rotation of the speakers reaching over one million people in one week. Our focus next quarter is on resource management and streamlining systems and processes in preparation of our national expansion to support fundraising for our new research strategy, to be announced in October. This is an exciting time for Australian brain cancer research where we will put a national spotlight on brain cancer. We encourage members of our community to get involved with research initiatives and invite you to attend a research strategy presentation in your state. The Music for Life Ball was held at Penrith Panthers on Friday 15 June and we are pleased to announce that Music for Life handed over a cheque for $59,187 to the Foundation from this year’s ball.

The night was a great success in every way and we would like to thank everyone that attended and got involved in all the fundraising. We would also like to thank the sponsors and supporters that donated to the night. Finally, a special thanks to Todd McKenny and the Robertson Bros who donated their services.

Unfortunately Dr Charlie Teo was unable to make it the Music for Life Ball this year as he had to perform emergency surgery on 12 year old Shannon Crowe. We are pleased to report that Shannon is doing well and we hope that both Shannon and Charlie will be able to attend the event in 2013.

DINE FOR A CURE Hosted by Michael Roberts, the Dine for a Cure One Thousand Cranes Dinner held in Melbourne on 25 May was a huge success, raising $67,000 for the Cure for Life Foundation. Thank you to the committee members Amanda Rice, Ros Facey, Carolyn Henderson and Hamish Park for all their hard work.

Guests were entertained by the String Angels and Ross Wilson and were generous in bidding for auction items such as diamond jewellery, art masterpieces and exotic trips. Dine for a Cure is proudly supported by Volvo, the Pratt Foundation and APT. Visit dineforacure.org to view photos from the evening.

Melbourne felt the feet of over 26,000 people on Sunday 15 July for The Age Run Melbourne, with the Cure For Life Foundation the beneficiary of over $23,800 from 11 teams and individual runners. Nine year old Lexie Jennings (pictured) also ran in honour of her father and wrote to the Foundation about her experience and motivation.

“My name is Lexie and I’m nine. My dad was diagnosed with a brain tumour in May so I decided to do Run Melbourne so I could raise funds for brain tumour research. We raised over $5,200 for Cure for Life Foundation. Before the race, I trained twice a week. I’m glad I did the race because I really enjoyed it and I know that our money will be used to help understand brain tumours better.”

LUNCH4LIFE, PRE MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHTuesday 16 October

The horses are off and racing for Cure For Life Foundation’s Lunch4Life, a pre Melbourne Cup lunch at Manta restaurant, Woolloomooloo. A fashion parade will get you in the mood for spring racing as you dine on Manta’s famous seafood and Italian dishes, whilst enjoying the spectacular views from the wharf. At $120 a ticket, it’s a better bet than a trifecta in the Cup.

To reserve your seat, phone (02) 9550 5244 or email [email protected]

Sunday 4 November

Join us on Sunday 4 November at Church Grounds, Centennial Park, Sydney, for Cure For Life Foundation’s annual Walk4Life. Walk4Life is a community event that encourages participants to walk, run or jog around a 3.5km course or just enjoy being part of our community.

There will be lots to see and do including a visit from the Waratahs, interactive games from our sponsor Volvo and a BBQ.

Get into the community spirit by joining a group of friends, family and colleagues and walk together in memory of someone who has lost their battle with brain cancer, in support of a survivor of brain cancer or to give hope to those yet to be diagnosed.

It is said that when one folds 1000 origami paper cranes they are granted a wish. At this year’s Walk4Life, you can make your own origami crane or just bring a photo or personal message to hang from our Tree of Hope and make your wish.

Once you have registered for the walk, we will email you a personal fundraising page and your friends and family can donate to your walk directly on your page.

To register, visit cureforlife.org.au/Walk_for_Life/ or for more information phone (02) 9550 5244 or email [email protected]

MRA’s inaugural ‘Lunch with Charlie’ has raised $25,000. Dr Charlie Teo inspired his audience with an open insight into his life, his work and his sometimes controversial reputation.

Nothing was off limits as Dr Teo entertained a capacity crowd of more than 120 guests at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, including several former and current patients who were on hand to support the pioneer of keyhole minimally invasive brain surgery.

For the first time, Cure For Life Foundation offered Gold Charity Entries in the 2012 Sun Herald City2Surf. Gold runners, with their unique gold bibs, got to start behind the Elite and Red Groups in return for committing to raise a minimum of $750 for charity.

Thank you to the 21 runners who signed up as Gold runners for the Foundation, with Brain Cancer Warriors raising an amazing $39,000 and coming eighth in the top ten fundraising teams. Another 11 City2Surf runners also toughed out heart-break hill and fundraised for the Foundation. Don’t miss your chance to be part of our City2Surf team in 2013.

Nicole Draper hosted a trivia night in memory of Suzanne Haass at Frankston Dolphins Football Club on 7 July and it was a huge success, raising $9,185.

Well done to Angus Alcocks who raised $12,200 for Cure For Life Foundation at the Canberra Marathon last April and was the highest individual fundraiser for the event.

Mamalai Mummas, a team of 23 runners, also raised over $11,000 helping exceed Cure For Life Foundation’s fundraising target for the marathon. Team t-shirts were printed, which many continue to wear at running events around Canberra. The Mamalai Mummas was the highest fundraising team of the event, with Les Girls, also raising money for Cure For Life Foundation, coming up third.

The following highlights a few of the events our many dedicated supporters have run to raise funds for the Cure For Life Foundation in the last couple of months. Whether the events have raised a little or a lot, the fact remains that every bit helps and gets us closer to realising our dream – a day when all patients diagnosed with brain cancer can be told they have a manageable disease. Sincere thanks from all at the Cure For Life Foundation to these and all our other fundraisers.

A huge thank you to Tour de Cure for continued generous support of Cure For Life Foundation. In May 2012, the Tour de Cure completed their signature ride from Brisbane to Mission Beach and hit their fundraising goal of $2 million. The Kynurenine Pathway Project, funded by Cure For Life Foundation, is one of five cancer projects that the Tour de Cure has chosen to help fund this year.

Assoc. Prof. Gilles Guillemin is part of a team of researchers involved in the Kynurenine Pathway Project. The aim of the research is to understand the way tumoral cells use the kynurenine pathway to neutralise the immune system and prevent the immune system from destroying the most aggressive type of brain tumour, glioblastoma.

The research will also assess and develop new combination therapy as the prognosis of glioblastoma remains poor. A better understanding of the involvement of the kynurenine pathway in the persistence of glioblastoma will aid in understanding glioblastoma biology and behaviour and further advance the development of new therapeutic targets for the treatment of brain tumours.

On a beautiful autumn day in Adelaide over 50 ladies gathered to raise money for two important causes. South Australian Alex Johnson teamed up with former Channel 9 Newsreader Georgina McGuinness to host a high tea, with proceeds going towards Cure for Life Foundation and Adelaide 4 Africa. Guests were treated to a range of sweets and savouries with the event raising over $5,000 for the causes. Alex is also organising a Fashion and Footy night in Adelaide on 22 September, which Dr Charles Teo is attending as guest speaker.
