Drugs Defined
Drugs Defined:Any substance, natural or artificial, other than food,
the by its chemical nature alters structure or function in a living organism.
Psychoactive Drug – A drug that specifically affects thoughts, emotions, or behavior.
Illicit Drug – A drug that is unlawful to possess or use.
Deviant Drug Use – Drug use is not common within social groups and is disapproved by the majority.
Alcohol
Alcohol Defined:
An organic substance formed when a hydroxyl group is
substituted for a hydrogen atom in a hydrocarbon. The type of alcohol used in alcoholic beverages, ethanol, derives from fermenting sugar with yeast. After alcohol is ingested, the body converts it to sugar-based fuel. Alcohol acts as a central nervous system depressant, and it may be part of solutions used as
preservatives, antiseptics, or medications.

Alcohol and Tobacco Use are Signs Leading to Gateways Use of illicit drugs.
Schedule I
FEDERAL DRUG SCHEDULES
Schedule I –
Considered to have a very high abuse and addiction with no accepted medical safety or benefit of use.
Examples - Heroin, LSD , Marijuana, EcstasyPsilocybin – AKA Mushrooms and
LSD
Schedule II
Schedule II –
Have a high abuse potential with certain accepted medical uses. May lead to psychological and physical dependence.
Examples Morphine, Cocaine, Percocet, Fentanyland Dilaudid are classified as Schedule II Narcotics.
Schedule III
Schedule III –Less potential for abuse than substances in Schedules I or II. Abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.
Examples of Schedule III narcotics include:
Vicodin®,
Tylenol with Codeine®,
Suboxone®.
Schedule IV
Schedule IV –Substances in this schedule have a low potential for abuse relative to substances in Schedule III.
Examples of Schedule IV substances include: Xanax®, carisoprodol (Soma®), clonazepam Klonopin®, Valium®, Ativan®, Versed®.

SYNTHETIC DRUGS
General Definition: A synthetic drug is a drug with properties and effects similar to a known hallucinogen or
narcotic but having a slightly altered chemical structure, especially such a drug created
in order to evade restrictions against illegal substances.
Examples: K2 or Spice is a mixture of herbs, spices or shredded plant material that is typically sprayed with a synthetic compound chemically similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

o Effects of Amphetamine and Hallucinogen
o Produces feelings of increased energy, euphoria, emotional warmth and empathy toward others, and distortions in sensory and time perception.

Salvia Divinorum is grown domestically and imported from Mexico and Central and South America. The Internet is used for the promotion and distribution of Salvia . It is sold as seeds, plant cuttings, whole plants, fresh and dried leaves, extract-enhanced leaves of various strengths (e.g., 5x, 10x, 20x, 30x), and liquid extracts purported to contain salvinorin A. These products are also sold at local shops (e.g., head shops and tobacco shops)

Heroin • Heroin-related overdose deaths have more
than quadrupled since 2010.
• From 2014 to 2015, heroin overdose death rates increased by 20.6%, with nearly 13,000 people dying in 2015.
• In 2015, males aged 25-44 had the highest heroin death rate at 13.2 per 100,000, which was an increase of 22.2% from 2014.
